An exciting new Titanic project: "Unsinkable is a shattering new play from Liverpool creatives Matthew Reynolds and Joseph Winder, developed from a finalist piece at Tip Tray Theatre’s What Happens Next? 2025, now a full-scale production heading to Hope Street Theatre from 30th September to 3rd October 2026.

This is a project that already has momentum, from competition acclaim to a sold-out staged reading, and now needs your support to take this final step onto the stage.

We’re not waiting for someone else to make this happen, we’re doing it ourselves. With your support, we can give this harrowing untold story the attention it deserves."

Today I'm joined by James Penca from the Witness Titanic podcast for a fascinating and heartfelt look at the stories of a few of Titanic's third class passengers, ones too often left out of more sensational narratives. Together, we shine a light on journeys across the Atlantic that reveal so much more than tragedy. Through their own words and research into both their socioeconomic and cultural lives, we uncover a wealth of insight into the American immigration experience. From the hopes and hardships that drove people to leave everything behind, to the systems and realities that shaped their arrival in a new world, these passengers embody the complexities of the immigrant experience and utlimately how many immigrants passionately built their own new realities.

And just as importantly, we address the brutal reality of the current political climate--one that seeks to erase the beauty and promise of America as a nation of immigrants.

Today's episode dives even deeper into the fascinating but complex familial history of Archibald Gracie IV, one of the most well-documented survivors of the Titanic disaster. We'll explore the layers of his lineage and how he viewed it, from his questionable passion for a Confederate military heritage to the personal tragedies that shaped the man who found himself aboard that ship in April 1912.

In his memoir about the sinking, Archie the Fourth claimed that all lines of class had been blasted apart that night. Had they really? Did he have any perspective, really, to offer on this after a lifetime of leisure and wealth and rumination? Did the tragedy of his young daughter give him some that perhaps historians haven’t noted? Or is his account really just a classist and racist piece of fiction on par with the tome he wrote about his father’s Civil War servicer?

Yeah, we’re going there.

The Gracie family, starting with its original Scottish immigrant Archibald, built a shipping empire in 18th and 19th century America--New York to Alabama--that profoundly shaped economic development. But their wealth was deeply entangled with the slave trade, its plantation economy, and later the Civil War itself. Their legacy, memorialized in landmarks like Gracie Mansion (now the NYC mayor's residence), reflects the uncomfortable truth of how American prosperity was built on exploitation. When Archibald Gracie IV stepped on to the decks of Titanic, he'd inherited a complicated legacy and was fighting tooth and nail to prove the worth of his ancestors' fallen pride.

Join author Richard Stone and myself as we discuss his work Project Mayflower: Building and Sailing a 17th Century Replica--a detailed and important dive into the legacy of the Mayflower and how its replica (a joint venture between the US and the UK) has also resonated for several generations.

You can find the book here: https://bookshop.org/a/80949/9781493084364

The Titanic and the Mayflower stand as perhaps the two most iconic vessels in modern cultural memory, legacies enduring not through military conquest or commercial success, but through their profound symbolic resonance in the collective imagination. Both ships represent pivotal moments of transition and aspiration—the Mayflower carrying Pilgrims toward religious freedom and a new world in 1620, though as we discuss in the interview this isn’t 100 percent accurate, the Titanic embodying Edwardian confidence and technological hubris in 1912. Each voyage ended in a way that amplified its mythology: the Mayflower's grueling journey and harsh first winter became foundational to American identity and Thanksgiving tradition, even though that’s also more myth that reality, while the Titanic's catastrophic sinking on its maiden voyage became the ultimate cautionary tale about human overconfidence. What unites them most powerfully is how they've transcended their historical moments to become cultural touchstones—the Mayflower as shorthand for American origins and pioneer spirit, the Titanic as a universal metaphor for tragedy, class division, and the limits of progress.

Titaniac alert! This is a fun and moving one.

Tim Baker is an actor, screenwriter, and firm believer that iced coffee should be its own food group. A Midwest-born, East Coast-raised transplant, he now calls Los Angeles home. Fueled by a healthy dose of sarcasm and a lifelong love for history, he writes about dynamic, flawed, and multifaceted characters—probably because he finds perfect people incredibly boring. His daily routine consists of a three-mile run, followed by several hours of trying to keep up with the stories in his head and petting every dog he sees.

Noah Angell is an artist who has exhibited and performed internationally. He's also an author - last year he published his first book, Ghosts of the British Museum, a meticulously-researched, genre-defying narrative non-fiction work about the storied museum's many ghosts. He's currently at work on his first feature-length documentary film, and is speaking to us today from Durham, North Carolina.

Join me for a truly meaningful conversation about artifacts, the energies they hold, the importance of oral history, and how we can denaturalize museums to further understand the oft-violent but infinitely important histories of cultures around the world. We discuss the similarities between his work on the British Museum's artifacts and those of Titanic, the hauntings of the museum and Titanic's alleged hauntings, plus many etcs.

Join me for a fantastic interview with renowned lawyer and journalist Adam Cohen, whose new non-fiction work--Captain's Dinner: A Shipwreck, an Act of Cannibalism, and a Murder Trial that Changed Legal History--takes a look at one of the most controversial maritime cases of all time, on the cusp of the age of steam.

From Author's Equity: "On May 19, 1884, the yacht Mignonette set sail from England on what should have been an uneventful voyage. When their vessel sank in the Atlantic, Captain Thomas Dudley and his crew found themselves adrift in a tiny lifeboat. As days turned to weeks, they faced an unthinkable choice: starve to death or resort to cannibalism.

Their decision to sacrifice the youngest—17-year-old cabin boy Richard Parker—ignited a firestorm of controversy upon their rescue. Instead of being hailed as heroes and survivors, Dudley and his crew found themselves at the center of Regina v. Dudley and Stephens, a landmark murder trial that would establish the legal precedent that necessity cannot justify murder—a principle that continues to shape Anglo-American law today.

In Captain's Dinner, acclaimed journalist, Pulitzer Prize juror, and New York Times bestselling author Adam Cohen masterfully depicts both the harrowing weeks at sea and the sensational trial that followed."

In this second part of my exploration of the Astor fortune and its relationship with Mackinac Island and native communities, I look at the ways by which the fur trader impacted the island and its ecosystems, both human and non-human. I also break down the evolution of the island into a tourist destination, how the Astors bowed out of it as the fur business died down, but how ultimately they ended up back there in spirit. The Grand Hotel’s history also highlights here the growth of tourism, a leisure class, and a century-long national obsession with Gilded Age romanticism and luxury. Finally, we unpack the life of Titanic passenger John Jacob Astor IV, who walked on board as its wealthiest passenger because of his ancestors’ decisions; he perished in the cold water that night, but the myths of his legacy live on. How is he somehow on Mackinac now? Who are the island’s ghosts? Come along and find out.

The Astor family name conjures images of Gilded Age opulence and tragedy—perhaps most famously embodied by John Jacob Astor IV, who perished aboard the Titanic in 1912. But the roots of one of America's first great fortunes stretch back much further, to the late 18th century when German immigrant John Jacob Astor built a fur trading empire that spanned from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Northwest. His American Fur Company turned remote outposts like Mackinac Island into crucial commercial hubs, fundamentally shaping the economic development of the American frontier. Over multiple generations, the Astors transformed their wilderness wealth into New York real estate, political influence, and cultural prestige, creating a dynasty that helped define what it meant to be American aristocracy but all built on the backs of the enslaved, the poor, the immigrants. Their story is one of ambition, innovation, and the complex legacy of fortunes built on both opportunity and exploitation during a pivotal era in American history. Part One explores the roots of all this. Part Two will explore the spiritual, physical, and cultural ghosts and legacies of Mackinac Island itself.

How does Titanic's legacy change? Is there a chance it did happen and someone saw Smith in Baltimore years later? Wild to imagine right...?

This is a fun one! Pablo and I unpack the utter DESOLATION of a world without the success of 1997's Titanic. Imagine if somehow the Hollywood nutjobs who harassed James Cameron during the production were...right? That audiences wouldn't respond? How would it have affected what museums and memorial sites we have now, or how Titanic's legacy survives? What is pop culture without Jack and Rose? What is film history without this particular monocultural moment?

I shudder to think!

Join me and Pablo as we reflect on the wonder that swept the world when the shipwreck of Titanic was finally found in 1985 by Robert Ballard, and how it changed not just history books, but our own lives. We dive into a fascinating “what if”—imagining a world where Ballard never found the wreck. We discuss how the cultural history of the Titanic would be completely different: museums in Belfast, Southampton, Cobh, the United States might never have opened, millions of people may never have become enamored, and the ship’s story might have faded into obscurity. This series is a study of the world’s enduring connection to the Titanic.

Happy Black History Month! Today we explore the life of Harriet Tubman, who every American school child learns a LITTLE about. Her life was much more complex and grittier than typical textbooks will lead one to believe; her work on the Underground Railroad is just the tip of our proverbial iceberg. During the Civil War, Tubman risked her life to scout and spy for the Union Army as well as worked tirelessly to provide social services for recently-freed slaves. Join me as we unpack the mythologies, bust them open as usual, and give thanks for those historical figures who have spoken loudly and acted with purpose.

Please excuse some inferior sound, I am displaced from my studio at the moment because of some very disagreeable pipes at our house that decided to flood our bottom floor.

Sex is discussed in this episode, just a heads up, but not in any graphic way.

This was a Patreon bonus episode but too fun to not unlock!

I bring you an amazing EXTRA SPECIAL episode with my friend and fellow Titaniac Jamie Didawick. We met on Instagram when she found the podcast a couple of years ago and have since bonded over both Titanic and Disney. She's a travel agent (the best one ever) and she helped me and my family have the time of our lives at Disney World just a few weeks ago. This is a conversational episode about everything from James Cameron's Pandora at Disney to our favorite 1997 moments to modern cruising. It's a joy, and I hope you enjoy.

Warning this will make you want to go on a trip immediately, and if so contact Jamie here: https://www.instagram.com/bestdayeverwithjamie/

A video version will follow tomorrow once I have the time to upload too.

Cheers!

LA

Join me as I begin to explore the lives of Middle Eastern immigrants on Titanic, something I should have done long ago. The story of Titanic’s “Miracle Boy” is not oft-told, perhaps because it’s so heartbreaking, but the long and triumphant life of Michael Shafiq Peter Yusuf (Joseph is the Americanized version of the last name) is beautiful in its resiliency. Traveling on Titanic with his young mother and a tiny baby sister, Michael was separated from them in the chaos but managed to make it onto another lifeboat, reuniting with his family on Carpathia. What followed is marred with tragedy for many members of the family, but through their story we see the stories of immigration, Syrian families, third class, and the daily struggles of poverty.

Fore more on the Syrian passengers, try and find a copy of Leila Elias’ detailed work: https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Dream_and_Then_the_Nightmare.html?id=gSa1ygAACAAJ

Listen to me gab with on one of MY fave history podcasts, Salem the Podcast! I was honored to join them for an episode and I know many of you will find their work fascinating. On their show, Salem tour guides and historians Jeffrey and Sarah take deep dives into the oft-dark, always-intriguing history of their town, its mythology and its obsessions. We have much in common in terms of how we approach research and how we unpack strange and beautiful stories. In this crossover episode, we speak about Elizabeth Lines and her daughter Mary, survivors who went on to spend much of their lives in Topsfield, not too far from Salem.

Join me for a conversation with renowned actor Cotter Smith, who portrays Senator William Alden Smith in the new film Unsinkable: Titanic Untold. We discuss how he tackled playing this rather controversial Titanic figure, a man who spearheaded the United States Senate Inquiry in the immediate aftermath of the sinking; we also dissect how Smith has been treated in the ship's historiography and maybe why he’s not gotten the fairest shot. It was an absolute pleasure to meet Cotter. If you’d like to see Cotter and some of the cast and crew of Unsinkable in person, consider joining us for a screening + Q/A in Knoxville on April 12th!

As Titanic hit the online news cycles in some wacky ways this past week (Titanic II? Ok…), I pushed the Emergency Meeting button and called Pablo O’Hana, my dear friend and one of our foremost experts on Titanic’s artifacts, its cultural impact and its memorialization. This is a wonderfully meandering podcast chat about what it means to be in the Titanic community, what we all owe to the memory of its victims, and how we can all use our voices here to honor the heart and soul of the ship we love. I may use the word “like” 87 times here, but please forgive this unedited and passionate bit of time.

As a podcaster, a historian, a human, I want to extend my deepest love and sympathies to the family of Nex Benedict in the wake of their untimely and preventable death. We have to ACT and SPEAK OUT against inequality and prejudice in this country. We cannot hide in the shadows or make excuses for our relatives or friends who quietly support hate in the name of God or their church or their privilege. Thank you to everyone who reached out yesterday on Instagram. This podcast supports trans youth, all youth, all children, all people, and this is a safe space forever.

Enjoy an unlocked bonus episode as a thank you from me to the most amazing followers and listeners in the freaking world!!! xx

Join me as I tell the tragic but beautiful tale of two of Titanic's honeymooners--the Marvins, a gorgeous and glowing young couple from New York. In a newspaper interview shortly afterward, Mary said, unable yet to process Daniel's death: “My God, don’t ask me too much. Tell me, have you any news from Dan? He grabbed me in his arms and knocked down men to get me into the boat. As I was put in the boat he cried ‘It’s alright, little girl, you go and I will stay a while. I’ll put on a life preserver and jump off and follow your boat.’ As our boat shoved off, he threw a kiss at me, and that is the last I saw of him.”

Join me for a look at the life of Engelhart and Helen Ostby, father-and-daughter jewelers who boarded Titanic in First Class. Until recently, I had no idea that such a crucial figure in Edwardian fashion and design was a passenger or that he trained his daughter in the business by traversing Europe, a fairly modern and feminist concept. The Ostby story is one of immigration, one of innovation, and their rings remain part of our aesthetic today. This is random and beautiful Titanica at its finest!

Join me for an exploration of the life of Third Class Passenger Hilda Hellstrom. In November of this year, a group of Titanic researchers, enthusiasts and descendants assembled to honor her life and memories with a new headstone at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, Illinois. This episode is an amalgam of that experience, with descendant interviews conducted by listener Mia Morgante (an unsinkable thank you, Mia!) and insight from the Paul Burns, Titanic Museum Attractions' curator and Tony Probst, the collector who spearheaded this memorial service. Mia and I also sit down to unpack the experience, speak on the importance of preserving oral histories, and what a life like Hilda's means for all of us.

Special thank yous to: Paul Burns, Tony Probst, Anton Centko, Claire Centko, and everyone at the Titanic Museum Attractions

This is the first of two holiday-inspired December episodes.

Join me AT the Titanic Museum Attraction as Emily Densky and I discuss the haunting beauty in recognizing the lives of Titanic's children, both those who survived and those lost. We tell the story of Douglas Spedden, whose survival that night (alongside his family) inspired his mother Daisy to write a children's book at Christmas, 1913--to help him cope with the unbelievable trauma, no doubt. Douglas' life was cut horrifically short just two years later, and the manuscript slept in a trunk for decades...until a descendant stumbled upon it and brought it out into the world.

We jump around at the end to a bit of everything as well--happenings at the museum, descendant visits to the museum, and....past life regression?!

The Unsinkable side series of sorts strikes again. Join me for a look into Martin Scorsese's brilliant new historical epic--forty-five minutes in which I somehow manage to forget to even mention Robert DeNiro's name. (Cue me with head shaking in hands.) But I do spend some time unpacking the story of the tragic Osage killings in the early twentieth century, why this movie and the book its based on are doing crucial work in rewriting the narrative of American history, and (shocked?) Leonardo DiCaprio's brilliant and frightening turn as one of the killing culture's perpetrators.

My apologies for slightly inferior audio here, our connection was not fantastic and neither of us were in our usual office!

For the season's inaugural book episode, I'm honored to bring you a candid and nuanced
conversation with author Patti Henry; her work Surviving Savannah explores (through historical fiction) the sinking of the southern steamship Pulaski in the first half of the nineteenth century. We spoke about everything from her research process and the wild synchronicities within it to shipwreck artifact retrieval to the importance of shedding light on the history of slavery in America. This was a dynamic chat and I thank Patti for taking the time!

I was so fortunate to chat with author J. Kent Layton prior to his book signing at Titanic Pigeon Forge just a few days ago. It's a short interview but Kent's razor-sharp insight into the research process for his renowned book On a Sea of Glass (co-authored with Bill Wormstedt and Tad Fitch) is so invigorating. Kent has written extensively about Titanic as well as other Atlantic liners.

Join me for a heavy but crucial part of the Titanic story as we explore the lives of Isidor and Ida Straus, mythological in the Titanic lore for their love and their sacrifice for each other in the sinking. They're so much more than this image frozen in stone, though, figuratively and literally. I am torn in my thoughts of Isidor, as his role in the Confederacy in his youth makes this a thorny tale to say the very least. This episode has darkness but also light.

A special thank you to Gareth Russell, as his book Ship of Dreams provided so many incredible insights. Also please look to Stephen Biel's book Down with the Old Canoe for more on the cultural impact of the way we mythologize passengers.

Join me for a candid and invigorating conversation with Pablo O’Hana, who began his career working at Titanic Belfast and has since become a leading publicist and activist in the UK. With a track record of political and public sector campaigns that inspire debate and shift opinion, he has worked to elect America’s first-ever woman of color to state-wide office, legalize abortion in Ireland, transform the UK’s road safety record and on every British election since 2014. He also worked alongside some of the country’s most senior public figures, political party leaders and Britain's most acclaimed talents. He is also an expert on the (often wild) story of Titanic’s artifacts and we engage in a lively and healthy debate about the ethics behind memorializing the ship and its passengers.

Welcome to a special but somber start to Season Three as we honor all five lives lost on the Titan submarine disaster as well as take a deeper look at the life of one of them, world-renowned explorer PH Nargeolet. He was "Mr. Titanic" to the deep sea community and responsible for managing dives that brought up thousands of the shipwreck's artifacts. Join me in shining a light on his work and his legacy.

There is a lot of inappropriate and sensationalist reporting on OceanGate circulating online, sadly. Grab an ice cold glass and a bottle of your favorite ale or pilsner or lager, anything, and join me for a lively look at the history of beer AND the history of beer on Titanic. Was Wrexham Lager really the draught beer in third class? Was it the only beer on the ship? Lots of mythology to bust open here, and surprisingly a lot to be learned from the gender dynamics of the history of brewing too. Always new branches on the tree to study, always new lenses to look at Titanic through!

Chelsea Pinkard is back to discuss trends in historical fiction, HOW historical fiction can illuminate or box in the Titanic narrative, and why we can't quite ever get to that "Jack and Rose" moment in ship lit. We co-read the novel Titanic Girls by researcher Julie Cook (who has also published in the non-fiction realm about Titanic widows and orphans in Southampton). We break down the feminist themes in it and why they're so important. Crucial! We also find a little time to debrief about the 25th anniversary of the Cameron film. I wish Chelsea had time to be my co-host, she's incredible, but alas she'd BUSY researching maritime history in Australia. Though she's promised to come back once a year to update us!

I am grateful for every listener. I am grateful to do this podcast. I remember today, and every day, each soul that boarded that ship in 1912.

I am thrilled to bring you my first ever interview with a cast member from Titanic (1997)--Alexandra Boyd--and, just as exciting, a peek into her film Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries and new podcast Titanic Talk. Join me as I uncover a LOT (truly, more than I anticipated!) about the man so commonly referred to as "the real Jack Dawson." He was J. Dawson, Titanic crew member, but he wasn't even named Jack. And his real story is human and beautiful and complex on its own. We should be grateful that the film's popularity eventually trickled down into research and illuminated so much about him, though, and culturally it's astounding what an impact the 1997 film had on Dawson's legacy.

Join me as I examine the life of a powerhouse of a woman, born Lucy Christiana Sutherland but re-branded through her own force as Lucy, Lady Duff Gordon, owner and designer of the greatest and grandest fashion house of the Edwardian era. She is not without controversy, but neither are our famous male figures from this era. She built an empire and we still live with the influence of her design, her flair, and her business practices today. Why doesn't she get more credit? Let's dissect it!

Join me as Emily Densky and I discuss a few of the children who boarded Titanic in 1912, highlighting both gorgeous and heartbreaking human moments the night of the sinking as well as how the events affected their lives moving forward. This year, 2023, the Titanic Museum Attractions celebrate a "Year of the Child" with new artifacts, galleries and events that showcase the hope, resiliency and memory of all the children on the ship.

This was an emotional episode to build, and you'll hear the breaking in my voice as I record. I share with you the stories of all fourteen passengers from the village of Lahardine, Addergoole, County Mayo, who boarded Titanic together in third class. Only three survived. I was so fortunate to visit the Addergoole Memorial last August with my family, and interspersed here are voice notes I made while there. These people deserve to be remembered. Let's say their names:

Annie McGowan
Catherine McGowan
John Bourke
Catherine McHugh Bourke
Mary Bourke
Mary Canavan
Patrick Canavan
James Flynn
Annie Kelly
Bridget Donohoe
Bridget Delia Mahon
Mary Mangan
Bridget Delia McDermott
Nora Fleming

Today I post an episode long in the making. This is an examination of the complex and rich life of Major Archibald Butt, highly mythologized Titanic First Class victim who served as military aide to TWO U.S. Presidents and wooed all of Washington, D.C., it seems, with charm and grace. He was in Europe in 1912 with his close friend Frank Millet, renowned artist, who many believe may have actually been his romantic partner. I talk about this head-on and examine the ways the Titanic community has written this "debate." Should it even be a debate? I am saddened by the mere thought of someone not being able to live their true identity, and I take at look at the oft-ignored more tragic parts of Archie's story. I also look head-on at issues of race and his identity as a southerner. This is a deep one, this is a good one.

Thanks for listening!

Veronica Hinke, author of The Last Night on the Titanic: Unsinkable Drinking, Dining, and Style is BACK on the pod to discuss tips for hosting your own Titanic/Edwardian-era dinner and cocktail party. Whether for New Year's Eve or a birthday, perhaps an Oscar party, the First Class menu on Titanic is particularly wonderful inspiration for entertaining this winter...and we tell you how: everything from prepping caviar and oysters to the histories behind the gloriously rich and boozy Pre-Prohibition cocktails that would have been aboard the ship. This is a re-release from January 2022, but LISTEN, at least to the intro, because that part is new!

More coming for the 25th anniversary of the film. EPIC episode coming December 19th!

From January: In this last episode for my series on the 1997 movie, I go off script and recount the Titanic cultural phenomena but also the very personal feelings I have about it and how it relates to our understanding of the ship, film history, memory, grief. I also go over the many/pervasive pop culture references from the past 25 years, including some that listeners wrote in about. This is a grab bag. This is me coming to terms with my love of a thing. This is Titanic Forever. Join me. A special thanks to my husband John for being such a good sport.

Today I'm joined by Emily Densky of the Titanic Museum Attraction to discuss the real life passengers that James Cameron brought to life in the 1997 film Titanic. Ever wonder who that man smoking a cigar and yelling that "women and machinery don't mix" is? Ever wonder if Lady Duff Gordon actually did design dirty lingerie? We cover these burning questions (!) and so much more as we unpack the movie and how our collective relationship with it informs how we view and memorialize the ship itself.

Also! Make sure to visit the museums in December or early January, if you're able, to view the film costumes currently on display. Find location and ticket info here: https://titanicpigeonforge.com

In this episode I venture into Astor-land for the first time, beginning with a bit of a primer on JJ Astor and his family, leading into his courtship with 17-year-old Madeleine Force, who would go on to become his second wife and board Titanic alongside him. Then I'm joined by author Shana Abe, whose novel The Second Mrs. Astor is a stunning piece of historical fiction that attempts to fill in the gaps of what we know and illuminate their love story. It's a great chat, and we fell into a wonderful rapport immediately. (*I apologize if the audio is a bit shaky, I've had some sick family members and my recording space was a bit displaced!)

We speak in the interview about one of JJ and Madeleine's descendants appearing in James Cameron's documentary Titanic 20 Years Later. That was Jacqueline Astor Drexel, who is the daughter of Jakey, their son. So she's JJ and Madeleine's granddaughter! Here's a link to the entire documentary free to stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fijSuO_oUIM

Join me as I head back to Cobh and explore the story of Titanic's only known washed up debris, a message in a bottle from a 19-year-old immigrant named Jeremiah Burke. We don't know exactly when he wrote the message or what date it says, but it seems pretty legit, and it was found in 1913 just a few miles from where his family grieved for his loss. What do you think? Is it real? What date does it say? I also give some Cobh travel recs. This is a fun little mini episode!

Join me for this, my very first collaborative episode with the Titanic Museum Attraction:

For the month of November we decided to share some research and chat about a few of the 48 veterans who sailed on Titanic. I welcome back Kadi Brazil, who has appeared on the pod before and, honestly, I'd have her on every week! This is the important work, telling the stories, and looking at passengers through a lens like military service opened up so many intriguing tangents as well. A few passengers featured here: Helen Churchill Candee, Edith Pears, Archie Butt, Archibald Gracie, Father Frances Browne, and the star of the show today, truly--Gus Cohen, a third class passenger with perhaps even more than nine lives.

Join me as I take a look at the life of Charles Joughin, known in pop culture as "Titanic's Drunk Baker." It wouldn't be Unsinkable without a title myth-busting, would it? There's actually a LOT of myth-busting here. I examine his testimony about the events of the night of the sinking, recount the hardships and successes of his eventful life at sea, and question whether the alcohol in his system (which probably wasn't even that much, spoiler alert) did or didn't help him survive in the icy waters that night.

For more on the food, drink, and food WORKERS aboard Titanic, see Veronica Hinke's The Last Night on the Titanic, available here: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-last-night-on-the-titanic-veronica-hinke/1130204164

This is a RE-RELEASE of a spooky season episode from last year!

An in-depth examination of paranormal phenomenon related to the ship: the omens and premonitions of passengers, accounts from fortune-tellers, and the life and writings of spiritualist and Titanic victim William Stead (whose floating, talking head so many people claim to have seen at seances just weeks after the sinking). Oh, and, of course...a few suspected hauntings. For more detail, I recommend George Behe's book Titanic: Psychic Forewarnings of a Tragedy.

Join me for a special October Book Club episode! Haunting the Deep, Adriana Mather's follow-up to SMASH hit How to Hang a Witch, is about a girl who sees spirits, and this time around she's seeing them dripping with water.  I wonder why!

Adriana and I have a wonderful conversation about writing, historical fiction, Titanic passengers, and even a bit about some real-life experience with spirits. She has family members who were intricately involved in the Salem Witch Trials as well as family members who survived the Titanic, so I ramble through a few questions for her there, giddy audibly, as I was just completely enamored of the stories.

Happy Spooky Season!

Join me for a walk through Titanic Quarter in Belfast, where my family I spent four glorious days back in August. I wish I could teleport back to the bar at Titanic Hotel right this instant. An old-fashioned. The halls of Harland and Wolff. It was a magical time.

In this episode I walk through the history of Harland and Wolff shipyard both literally and figuratively. I give some commentary on the stunning achievements of Titanic Belfast, the museum at the center of the Quarter. Join me in a FUN but also incredibly informative chat with actress and docent Kadi Brazil-- who works at the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge, where she portrays some of the ship's most iconic female passengers, historical and fictional (wink, wink, Rose reference). Kadi was so generous with her time and gives us a real sense of what it's like to work in a place where it's always, always 1912. From moving moments with visitors to some wacky anecdotes, this is one of my favorite interviews to date!

Join me a I talk with Simon Medhurst, who found out just about 10 year ago that he's actually the great-grandson of Titanic Quartermaster Robert Hichens. Hichens is quite the controversial figure in the ship's mythology, and Medhurst has been on a wild personal ride of discovery and reconciliation while also becoming an important voice in the online Titanic community.

Join me as I revive my Titanic on Film series for this 70s time capsule of a TV movie--SOS Titanic. I ran from watching this one for years. A horrid Margaret Brown take, lots of 70s bangs and anachronistic hair, it just never appealed to me. But I finally ran into it head on and I examine its production, actors, themes a bit as well as highlight a few of the featured passengers. It's not on streaming currently (as of this episode's publication in September of 2022), but DVD copies are available on Amazon and other online shops.

Cheers, guys!

Welcome back to Unsinkable, I've missed you all! Join me in this tale of young love, forbidden romance, and a search for historical accuracy as I investigate the tale of Mary Mullin and Denis Lennon, two third class passengers from Ireland who boarded at Cobh, then Queenstown; their story is lean in facts but rich in mythology. Part of this story takes us to the 1990s, when a medical journalist named Monica O'Hara Keegan wrote about her past life regressions into a character that might have been some version of Mary. Trust me, it'll make some sense once you listen. This episode is a great mix of discussion about methodology and a bit of travelogue, as I share my family's experience in Cobh just this past August.

Cheers!

Just a quick note to say I know the audio on this episode is a bit spotty and breathy; I had to use a Cloud recording because we had a few connection glitches on the day, my apologies!

Join me for this, an update on the media involving + important work being done around the shipwreck of the Clotilda, which I featured in an Unsinkable side series episode this past spring. In this episode I speak with Mike Foster, whose ancestor William Foster captained (and burned) the slave ship. Mike has become a vocal advocate for Africatown and the legacy of the Clotilda; he speaks candidly with me about his relationship to descendants, his own emotional journey in becoming part of this story, and the ways in which Africatown is looking to the future. I am so grateful he gave me this time.

Join me in my first, EARLY foray into a new podcast project--Mythic Americana. I want to explore the places that are imprinted on us for their mysteries, their ghosts, their architecture, their bloodied histories, whatever it may be. I want to explore the places we travel to. The places we seek out. The first one is a comfortable choice for me in this experiment, as I adore Biltmore Estate and have been seven times. It's a whole other world. In this episode I explore the planning and building orchestrated by its creator, George Vanderbilt. In Part Two later this month I'll explore life at Biltmore and how it became the tourist Mecca we know it as now.

Dr. Biel and I discuss everything from the legacy of the various Titanic films to his surreal experiences aboard a ship in the North Atlantic as part of the group that accompanied the 1998 expedition to the wreck. I began researching this episode uneasy about what I might find, nervous; and while it is an incredibly somber and sobering part of the Titanic story, I was also shocked at how exhilarated I felt uncovering it, shedding light on the stories of the bodies found, what we can learn from them. Join me as I look at the story of the recovery ship the Mackay Bennett and the process of bringing some Titanic victims back ashore. The Mackay Bennett's fate is tied to Titanic's forever.  Halifax's story is as well. In the rows of graves there we find our grief, their grief, a part of the Titanic narrative that is too often ignored.

This is a special episode in honor of the 110th anniversary of the night Titanic sank; I hesitate, always, to use the word "anniversary" here because it seems a bit crass, but we must commemorate every person aboard that ship, every person lost on that ship, every person who lost someone on that ship, every way in which human lives were affected by the unimaginable loss. And because we always, always look to Titanic for metaphors and analogies and lessons and evidence of this thing we call humanity, I also dig into what I think are the relevant ties to our 2022 questions. I also take some time to mention and thank not only other podcasters and writers working in this space but also some of you listeners.

Join me in this, my very first side project episode, a look at the overwhelmingly important historical, cultural, and political impact of Clotilda, the last known American ship to bring slaves from Africa as part of the Atlantic slave trade. The shipwreck was located just a few years ago and its future raises some important questions. Clotilda is an American story, a global story, that you absolutely must know. I was amazed too, despite what a different era I obviously researched here, how many both thematic and physical links there are in this story to Titanic. I want to thank Ben Raines for his work in the new book The Last Slave Ship, which is stunning and helped me solidify and amplify all my research. I'm excited to bring you an interview with Jim Myers, who is the Education Executive for both Titanic Museum Attractions (Branson, Missouri, and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee). We speak about the museum's goals of memorializing both the survivors and the victims of Titanic, its role as an interactive attraction, its efforts to broaden educational programs around the ship, and also just some of Titanic's achingly human stories. I managed to only mention James Cameron's Titanic ONCE...can you believe it?

For March, the museums have a special exhibit honoring Irish passengers, and we speak a bit about it.

Join me as I chat with author Hazel Gaynor, who has SUCH a refreshing take on Titanic's legacy; her book, The Girl Who Came Home, is a peek into some of the smaller, gorgeously human moments aboard the ship, and specifically those of the Irish immigrants she focuses on. This book is a fictionalization of  the ship's real Irish passengers know as the Addergoole 14, who we talk a bit about in terms of collective grief and their legacy. We touch on the role of historical fiction in helping us all to process the tragedy, as well as just historical fiction's value more generally. This was a delight, and I congratulate Hazel on 10 years with this compelling novel of the Titanic!

Join me as I detail of the life of Joseph Laroche, the sole black man on the Titanic, whose story is so much more  than that factoid of a label would lead one to believe; his life intersected with crucial moments in Haitian history and in French history, and his marriage to a woman named Juliette highlights so many facets of race relations in the early twentieth century. But more importantly, their love was, it seems, quite powerful, and their family's story and legacy deserve to be told. I also address some themes of race and Titanic--how black culture processed the disaster through folklore, how race was on the ship in the form of passengers from all over the world and how they were portrayed in the wake of the sinking.

In some ways I think I've been waiting to record this episode for 25 years, but I wouldn't have been ready until this moment. I cover the ways in which the Titanic disaster has been viewed along gender lines and how the cultural history of it has been shaped by gender. I examine how the character of Rose, from 1997's Titanic, fits into the historical fabric of 1912 but also how she inspired and influenced a generation of young women (and men I'm sure!). I also highlight some crucial women's rights history of the era and touch on a few stories of actual female Titanic passengers who broke some norms of the time and were, as Rose is, complete badasses!

Author Gareth Russell and I have a wonderfully in-depth conversation about the complexities of the lives of several of Titanic’s first-class passengers. If you follow the pod, you know I talk a lot about the Titanic mythologies, these long-held visions of some of the storied passengers, and we address many of them in a blunt way. It’s quite refreshing. We also talk importantly about the creation of historical narrative and how a person’s own beliefs, emotions, prejudices inform how they interpret something, which, if you know me at all on this pod, you know is one of my most beloved themes. Gareth’s book was essential for me a couple of years ago as I dipped my toes back into Titanic history after a bit of a hiatus, and honestly it was a huge impetus in me working towards this podcast. To note, we also had a BLAST! Gareth is so fun to chat with and I wish we’d had ten hours to talk.

This second installment  turns partly into an exploration of some of the real passengers aboard the ship and their portrayals in James Cameron's film--Thomas Andrews, Margaret Brown, Archibald Gracie. I also discuss, with quite a bit of detail, how Cameron and his crew seamlessly constructed the ship and the sinking from a combination of practical, digital, and hybrid shots. Toss in a little bit of set gossip and me (of course, who is shocked) defending the finished product against those who doubt its accuracy! Cheers!

This is part one of a truly surgical look at the making of James Cameron's Titanic, arguably one of the most popular/successful/beloved/fill-in-any-blank film of all time. Even if you're not a true Titanic-movie person, this will be of interest to you, for the painstaking links Cameron goes to in order to re-build the ship and the world of 1912.

The Six is available online for a week starting tomorrow, January 22, 2022!
Get your ticket for The Six here: https://watch.eventive.org/fhff/play/61c5f6235a819200d56d0547

Here's the film's description, courtesy Friday Harbor Film Fest's website:

When RMS Titanic sank on a cold night in 1912, barely 700 people escaped with their lives. Among them were six Chinese men. Arriving in New York with the other survivors, the six were met not with compassion, but suspicion and slander. Less than 24 hours later, they were expelled from the country, soon forgotten, and lost beneath the waves of time. What became of them? The Six is an extraordinary story of survival and dignity in the face of racism and anti-immigrant policy that still reverberates today.

Here is my rundown of the life, career, and activism (yes, activism) of James Cameron, director of 1997's Titanic. To properly understand the film and its resonance in popular culture, I think its essential to understand the man who took us back to the ship. The clip of Cameron speaking about his childhood is from a Ted Talk, and the link is here: https://www.ted.com/talks/james_cameron_before_avatar_a_curious_boy

In this, my first book-centered episode, I chat with best-selling author William Hazelgrove about his book One Hundred and Sixty Minutes: The Race to Save the RMS Titanic, which unpacks and challenges a lot of the long-standing mythologies surrounding the ship's history. Using interwoven stories of wireless operators, rescue efforts of nearby ships, and the motivations and actions of those faced with decisions that tragic night, Hazelgrove's work brings a fresh perspective to very old questions.

This episode has been in the works for many months, for there is a LOT of material out there about scientist and oceanographer Robert Ballard, one of the discoverers of the wreck of Titanic in 1985 and a veritable explorer of the deep. In this episode I present a biographical sketch of his astounding life and career but also historicize it, as well as try to take you as a listener back to that moment of discovery aboard the ship Knorr in 1985. The wreck is an integral part of the cultural history of Titanic, as is Ballard, who become known as a "submarine cowboy" for his work finding shipwrecks around the world.

Cheers, happy holidays, and all my best wishes in the new year! See you in late January for the return of Unsinkable, with a series of episodes on the 1997 film. A Patreon bonus episode will also post on December 31st. Join the Unsinkable VIP club here: https://www.patreon.com/unsinkablepod

I've been training for this for 25 years, you guys! Today I shake up the Unsinkable feed with an experimental, rather spontaneous, rather improvised episode about Leonardo DiCaprio. He's our Jack Dawson, of course, but in many ways Jack Dawson has also been dead for a long, long time. Bear with me as I go off-script for the first time EVER on this podcast to share my thoughts on his filmography, his place in modern film history, and how we've landed at the metaphorical doorstep of his latest film, Don't Look Up, which tackles political and environmental issues head on. I've got a lot to say, this is a long one, this one was more improvised than anything I've ever recorded, so please forgive any editing or sound snafus. Also, if you're listening, Leo, please call me, I've got a lot of questions!

Cheers--

I re-visited the 1958 classic A Night to Remember, the first and main British cinematic interpretation of the sinking; it was based, of course, on the book of the same name by Walter Lord and I speak to Lord’s work and influence as well. I really wanted to bring some true academic analyses to this film AND address the comparisons of it to James Cameron’s 1997 film. So there’s some of both. Let me know what you think!

The article I mention by Sarah Street is in a collection called The Titanic in Myth and Memory: Representations in Visual and Literary Culture : https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/titanic-in-myth-and-memory-9780857717382/

I also really appreciated Steven Biel's analysis of the film in his book Down with the Old Canoe: https://www.amazon.com/Down-Old-Canoe-Cultural-Disaster/dp/0393340805/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=down+with+the+old+canoe&qid=1638918281&sr=8-1

Join me for an in-depth portrait of Titanic survivor Helen Churchill Candee, whose 90 years of life coincided an incredible number of times with rather huge historical moments and social developments in the twentieth century. Her story takes us down the road of women's suffrage and early feminism, of course to Titanic's decks, later even to the battlefields of World War I (where her fate intersects with a young Ernest Hemingway's) and then to the farthest corners of then-unexplored Asia. She's far from perfect, for no one is, but her endeavors as a writer, an activist, a traveler, they deserve a second and a third look. She deserves so much more than her historiographical reputation on Titanic as a gatherer of admirers. Cheers!

After touching on some analysis of Clive Cussler's 1976 bestseller Raise the Titanic in my last regular episode, I decided to watch its 1980 film adaptation (though I feared it, to be honest). I'm so glad I did. Buckle up, because there's a lot to unpack here, not least of which is the image of a rusticled and mangled (but triumphant) Titanic finally arriving in New York Harbor by tugboat tow 70 years after it was originally due. I unpack everything here, from Russian subplots and gendered dialogue to casting woes. Let me know what you think.

People have been writing  about Titanic since almost the moment she sank, and this episode is my attempt to analyze how those authors have interpreted and fictionalized the sinking. Historical fiction is a strange and often beautiful beast of a niche, and I've got great help here in understanding from Chelsea Pinkard, The Titanic Girl, who has a Titanic fiction book blog that is just absolutely stellar. Enjoy!

Here I put my cards on the table: Unsurprisingly, I'm a huge James Cameron fan and absolutely enamored of his deep sea exploration. In this episode I summarize, historicize, and review his 2003 documentary Ghosts of the Abyss, which took him and a team back down to Titanic in submarines fitted with 3-D cameras he'd designed alongside his brother. There's also a lot of Bill Paxton love here--he's the host of the film, in a way, and guides us through the wreck. Full disclosure I cry every time I watch this. I might have cried while recording this episode. I recommend reading Rebecca Keegan's book on Cameron--The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron (2009).

I'm thrilled to bring you an interview with Steven Schwankert, co-creator of the new documentary The Six, which tells the story of the six Chinese survivors of Titanic. The film is directed by Arthur Jones and marks the very first academic attempt to track the lineage of these survivors; along the way the team of researchers uncover a trail of stories that illuminate so much about the immigrant experience, the Chinese experience, and the Chinese-American experience.  See the links below for upcoming screenings!

I watched 1953's Titanic and it cracked open a wider discussion of class and gender than I even imagined. Join me as I examine Hollywood's Cinemascope imagining of the sinking, starring Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck, and Robert Wagner. It's a wild ride!

For a fantastic in-depth look at the cultural and political history of Titanic and its interpretations on film, in literature, and in music, I highly recommend Steven Biel's Down with the Old Canoe: A Cultural History of the Titanic Disaster.

This episode packs a punch (pardon the pun)! First off, I lay out some basics about the dining experience in the Edwardian era and on board Titanic in the first, second, and third classes. And then I share my interview with Veronica Hinke, author of The Last Night on the Titanic: Unsinkable Drinking, Dining and Style; this turned into a wonderful free-flowing conversation about memory and how we experience it through food and drink. And lastly, I humbly present to you a pre-Prohibition cocktail recipe from Veronica's book, as well as a little peek into attempting some Titanic cooking.

In this first of a series of mini-pods on Titanic-focused movies, television shows, and documentaries, I take a look at (and then can't look away from!) the 1996 CBS miniseries The Titanic. It had the unfortunate timing of a release just one year before James Cameron's epic film.

This one is a doozy, come take a listen.

Welcome back to Unsinkable: The Titanic Podcast! Episode two is an in-depth examination of the life of J. Bruce Ismay, managing director of the White Star Line (and, essentially, the owner of Titanic). History has not been kind to him, this man accused of abandoning his own ship and all those aboard her as she plunged into the sea. Here I outline his entire life, his own tragedies before and after the disaster, and attempt to answer the nagging question: did he deserve his reputation as Titanic's notorious scapegoat?

Welcome to Unsinkable, a new bi-monthly podcast about Titanic hosted by me, L.A. Beadles, a writer and historian who has been obsessed with the ship since I was 13 years old. I'm a podcast novice, so please forgive any audio hiccups in this first foray!

In the introductory episode, I attempt to set the tone for the pod by sharing some survivor accounts, outlining how I conceptualize the cultural history of the sinking, and laying out some  of the topics I'd like to cover.  I try, albeit with a bit of rambling and probably way too many mentions of James Cameron, to express my absolute awe at the incalculable humanity in the stories of the sinking and how they continue to reveal themselves.

Feedback is essential and I want to interact with the broader Titanic community. Please reach out with ideas, critiques, stories, anything. If you'd like to come on the pod, let's discuss that too. Let me know in your email if you're comfortable with it being read on air!
