My aunt Diane is an entrepreneur and an energy healer. Although most people refer to her work as deep tissue massage therapy, it's much more than that. She works with her clients to release blocked energy which starts with behavior and personal experience, and ultimately manifests itself as physical ailments. We booked this episode when I happened to bump into painter and podcast alumnus Bradley Collins with his partner Micah Norton, a motion graphics and visual effects artist working with SCAD (the Savannah College of Art and Design) and independently. Adam and I have known each other for 30+ years at this point. When I worked at Visit Savannah, the city's destination marketing organization, a college student by the name of Francesca Poliseno came to work for me as a video production intern. We're back! It's been about a year and a half since our last episode, but we're back with a limited run of new episodes, every Tuesday for the next couple months. Part of the reason for the hiatus was because of my business coach: Victoria Baylor, the guest in this week's podcast. I met Victoria when she came to speak about building your brand identity for the Savannah Jaycees. At the time, she was primarily coaching women business owners. Afterward, I kept seeing her around town at various networking and speaking events. At the time I was newly independent and going through some entrepreneurial growing pains, so I approached Victoria about some one-on-one coaching. What she provided for me changed the trajectory of my personal and professional life. Her kindness, active-listening, and attention to detail guided me to discovering the path laid out in front of me, and I cannot recommend her program enough. I had read all the business books, but Victoria helped me develop in the spiritual and emotional side, which I had previously overlooked. In Bradley's paintings, he takes out every part of the creative process that would normally be left up to chance. In this episode, we explore his creative process where he, as the "boss," creates a work order explaining how, where, and what colors should be applied to the canvas by the "laborer," (also him). His paintings take anywhere from weeks to months complete, and he doesn't even like how some of them look, but "that doesn't really matter," Bradley states. I met drew when I first moved to Savannah in July of 2018. At the time, I was working as a full-time videographer and she was working full time in a government affairs role, so I had no idea she had an interest in photography and creative pursuits. It wasn't until I starting speaking with Drew near the water cooler that I realized that she had a huge passion for not only the arts, but also helping and encouraging others to pursue their dreams. Since our time working together, Drew and I have both left our jobs, and Drew is currently a photographer, "encourager of others" and mom. Kyle Crowell and I met through our mutual love of skateboarding during our undergraduate years at SUNY Oswego. We then bonded further over our love of filmmaking. After graduating from college in 2014, Kyle moved directly to Los Angeles to start his journey as a full-time filmmaker. Take a listen." - Tyler About Sarah Brooke Sandin: Sarah Sandin is a Savannah-based visual artist and co-creator of The Stables. Originally from Victoria, British Columbia, but raised in California, she had an extremely eccentric upbringing. Her parents nurtured creativity and expression and raised their family in an intentional community or on the road. Sarah is a classically interdisciplinary artist, drawing on the forms, techniques and strategies of many different art forms and expressing herself across a huge array of different mediums. A former performance artist and art director from Los Angeles, Sandin got her start in the arts and entertainment industry at 18 as a professional dancer performing with artists including Madonna, Robin Thicke, Lady Gaga, Aerosmith, The White Stripes, Puscifer, Drake, Usher, The Black Eyed Peas and many others. Sarah’s practice straddles several distinct artistic disciplines, questioning the division between them and opening up new hybrid possibilities for artists. She draws on her abilities as a painter, performer, conceptual artist, dancer and industrial artist to blend together aesthetic elements encouraging the cross-pollination of audiences between forms. Sarah now works as a painter and contributor to The Stables aesthetic and conceptual production. Sandin paints as if music were alive. Her visual art captures the energy and vibrancy that music and cinema bring to life with saturated, vivid colors. Cory Smith is my former youth minister. I met him around 12 years old when I was still forming my beliefs about myself, religion, and the world. We've stayed in touch on and off over the years, and we recently had the time to catch up during his visit to Savannah to talk about some of the hard topics. Derek Hoetmer, a.k.a "Subway Derek," and I met in 2012 at the 46 Street Station in Astoria, New York City. Despite our different backgrounds and career paths, we were both 21 years old, in our first couple weeks of living and interning in New York City hundreds of miles from home. This episode of the Creative Truth is a little different. I turned 30 in December, so I wanted to take a moment to look back and reflect on my 20s. When I was in my early twenties, turning 30 seemed like a lifetime away. I thought by 30 I'd be married with kids, and a millionaire to boot. Instead, I spent my 20s battling with bankruptcy, relationships, alcohol, and chronic depression. Thankfully, looking back, I don't regret any of it and I feel better than ever. My hope is that by sharing my experience, other people fighting battles will realize that 1: You're not alone 2: There is a light at the end of the tunnel 3: There is help out there. 2020 has been bonkers. Razz & I combined forces in 2019 to start the Creative Truth; he has a love of audio, podcasting and storytelling, and I have a passion for video production, teaching, and learning from others. We've been on hiatus for a while, but it's time to fire up the ole podcast again. Here's what's happened in our neck of the woods: - We relocated the Podbox to The Stables in Savannah. - We upgraded our gear. - Razz and his family moved away to Charlotte. - Tyler is going to be the main solo host for now.
