Medical planning and training is a huge subject among preppers, and with good reason. In a large-scale disaster or worst case scenario, medical treatment may be impossible to access. There are dozens of prepper life skills for kids and summertime is the perfect time to learn them. If they learn and cross off 4 skills a week during the 12 weeks they are off from school, they'll complete the entire list before school starts back up. You can even give incentives for each one they master and hold your own graduation at the end!
I've seen the idea come up in conversations from time to time that acquiring food for long-term storage is pointless when you know you're not going to live in any one place for very long. It's a pain to lug it from house to house, and if you end up giving all that food away, you probably won't have it long enough to need it, anyway. My perspective is a little different and comes from my experience with food storage overseas.
House hunting for preppers adds a level of consideration above the typical “must haves” in a home. Anyone who has moved from one home to another knows it’s both stressful and exciting. During challenging times, finding moments of joy and pleasure can be essential for maintaining overall wellbeing. Incorporating elements of beauty into our daily lives, such as admiring nature, enjoying art or music, or simply adding a touch of aesthetics to our surroundings, can have a powerful effect on our mood and mental health. Engaging with beauty can stimulate the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, which can improve our sense of wellbeing and help us cope with stress and uncertainty. By prioritizing sensory experiences that bring us joy, we can cultivate a greater sense of resilience and positivity, even in difficult times.
Early in 2013 many of us were fixated on the story of the Carnival Triumph. This massive cruise ship lost nearly all its power due to fire and for five days became a bobbing cork in the water. Everyone has bad habits. I don't believe there is a human being alive who doesn't. In everyday life, most of these aren't a big deal. You're not a bad person if you have a weakness for chocolate. So you forget to put your shoes away, no one is going to die from that. Maybe you just need a closet organizer. Survival situations, however, are different from real life. A poor habit that may simply be an annoyance to your spouse on a regular day could have severe consequences in an emergency. In this article, we'll examine five bad habits, why they will kill you when your survival is on the line, and also some suggestions for establishing new healthier habits.

Ultimately, the decision to not keep bees may be based on a combination of practical, personal, and ethical factors that vary from individual to individual.

It has been said that those who don’t understand history are doomed to repeat it. Many of these lessons we think are part of the modern era are new packaging on old problems. We see them as survival lessons from old timers, but it was just how they lived. We can learn a lot by seeing how a generation born and raised post-prohibition, post-stock market collapse, and post-settling the West learned to overcome the pitfalls of short-sighted decision-making.
Although some folks you know may be resistant to the idea of prepping, you've got creative and effective ways at your disposal to encourage non-preppers to take action. From focusing on the practical benefits of preparedness to making it a fun and engaging activity, there are many approaches that can be tailored to the individual and the family. By taking the time to understand the concerns and motivations of non-preppers and finding ingenious ways to address them, we can help ensure that everyone is more ready for any situation that may arise.
No amount of arguing, pleading, or article-forwarding could convince my husband that a bleak future was possible. Prepping with a skeptical partner requires more out-of-the-box thinking, for sure! But little by little, I was able to do enough on my own to get us in decent shape for the most common events in our area — tornadoes extended power outages due to ice storms, and personal financial crises.
Chicory is a natural addition to a prepper's holistic survival plan. The root of the chicory plant can be roasted and used as a coffee substitute, providing a caffeine-free alternative that can be stored for long periods of time. Chicory leaves are also edible and can be added to salads or cooked as a vegetable. Additionally, chicory has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, liver problems, and inflammation. With its versatility and health benefits, chicory is a smart choice for preppers looking to stock up on essential supplies.
One of the most uncomfortable day-to-day health challenges has to be suffering through a round of hay fever every year. It's multi-faceted misery: sneezing; runny nose; itchy eyes, mouth or skin, stuffy nose due to blockage or congestion; and fatigue. Many people rely either on prescriptions or a handful of capsules from the health food store to stay comfortable during allergy season. However, herbs for seasonal allergies can be a simple alternative. Surprisingly, many of them are readily available as common weeds.
In long-term scenarios with no higher medical care, the prevention of infection becomes a crucial step in the healing process. By using herbs to encourage healthy wound healing and support the immune system, you have a backup plan in case medical supplies run short.

Moving is one of the most stressful things you can do, and moving with a full food storage and all of the emergency preparations that go with it can be super stressful. It's heavy, often fairly awkward (lots of glass jars in my case), and well, there's just so much of it. But what if you were using a method of organizing food storage that has it ready to transport with minimal effort?
Last year we decided to develop a close, personal relationship with bees by adding beehives to our busy backyard. Already we have an owl habitat and both herbs and vegetables growing alongside pines, oaks, and crepe myrtle trees. It's an odd assortment, to be sure, but we figured that bees would fit right in. Here's what we did.
Power's out! All you have to eat is cold food. For hours. For days. How soon will you get tired of that? How soon will the kids? Making bread from homemade yeast is a bit of science and a bit of art. The more loaves you make and the more recipes you try, the better the results will be. Venturing into the woods with my late grandfather to fill up gallon jugs with water from a natural spring he found and tapped himself is one of my favorite childhood memories. In this article, we have tips to find and tap one, plus questions to help you decide if developing one is right for you.
You never know when you're going to lose power. It's good to have a few ideas up your sleeve, so you're not twiddling your thumbs. It gets real boring - believe me! Over the years, I have received this question about unprepared family members many times. It's a sticky survival situation in which family and friends inform us they will just come to our house when disaster strikes. Since the issue of unprepared family members so common, but also one that is very pressing to many people, I turned to other bloggers and experts in the prepper and survival niche, and asked for their expert advice. Guerrilla prepping is all about learning survival skills and becoming fully prepped, all while staying under the radar. Unless you like the idea of being an obvious prepper and possible target, start thinking about how you might incorporate this concept into your own life and prepping. To help you get started, everything on this list doubles as a "fad" AND an important survival skill, but not one eyebrow will be raised when you sign up for a class, buy necessary supplies, or start checking out related books at the library.
When an emergency happens, that's the time to act, not sit down and think of the things you want to save. That's where a last minute emergency packing list comes in.
Since this article was first written in 2019, we've had a pandemic, more hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, and most recently, the winter storm that locked most of the U.S. in killing-cold temperatures and conditions. Still, this question remains: Why do people ignore common sense in a crisis, especially when they are forewarned of its severity?
Nutritional yeast is a food ingredient that provides a cheese-flavored seasoning or topping. It's high in nutrients, too. Here is when to use it and why.
Survival movies are great, but the shows on most lists focus solely on the prepper aspect, the scary, suspenseful drama of it all. This list has a slightly different angle, the romance angle.
Solar power is all the rage in prepping, homesteading, and rural living circles. Solar sounds like the perfect backup power solution, right? No hard-to-store fuel, no dangerous exhaust, and, best of all, solar is silent. But can solar batteries power your critical appliances during a power outage?
Inflation is up, the contents of our shopping carts are down. We seem to be marching out of the throes of the pandemic into the arms of an increasingly fragile economy. Is economic collapse on our horizon? What does that even mean? And how will we survive it?
When most people lose their jobs, they experience panic and worry. There are bills to pay, a mortgage to maintain, perhaps children to support through college, or car payments to make. How will they survive without their employment? Frantically they update their résumé and commence the often-disheartening round of answering want ads or blasting out their credentials on the internet, begging someone – anyone – to employ them. But there are alternate ways.
We preppers love acronyms and catchphrases, don’t we? Store what you eat, eat what you store is a popular one. TEOTWAWKI stands for The End Of The World As We Know It, of course. I’m not sure why this stuff is so popular other than it might make you feel like you’re part of the club when you learn the meaning behind those letters and sayings. One very popular catchphrase is, “Two is one, one is none.”

"It's all just things," we say until our things have gone up in smoke in a house fire. A residential blaze can occur anytime and often happens with little or no warning. Did you know that during 2015-2019, More than one-quarter (26%) of reported fires occurred in homes? Even worse, three-quarters (75%) of civilian fire deaths and almost three-quarters (72%) of all reported injuries were caused by home fires, according to the National Fire Prevention Association. Here's how to prepare.
If you've ever had your home broken into, you know the feelings of sadness, anxiety, anger, and being violated. In fact, according to the FBI, burglaries of residential properties accounted for 62.8 percent of all burglary offenses in 2019. Yet, when we talk about home security, it seems as though many people are just concerned with stockpiling weapons and ammunition. The reality, though, is that it takes a layered approach to address the issue of home protection and defense adequately.
The time to prepare for the cold and flu season is now. You'll thank yourself later if your family members start to fall like dominoes as the virus makes its rounds through your house.
