I remember when I first met Demilade at a Masterclass for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the African Leadership University, In Kigali, Rwanda in 2019. I distinctly remember how he captivated us with the new approaches to teaching and learning he had put in place and how they went about accrediting such. Then we went on to discuss furthering entrepreneurship on the continent over lunch and at a local Mexican restaurant. That’s right “Mexican” in Kigali. It goes to show that some times you don’t have to live at the origin or right by the source. However, with an entrepreneurial mindset, you can take what you love about the world and bring parts of it home with you, where you deem home to be. Like the amazing Mexican food, I tasted in Kigali. I love to think that our catch-up over this episode will take you on a journey on how you, just like Demilade can find a home away from home. Share it, spread it and let it resonate.

We are Back! We took a short break after ending the first season of our podcast.
Welcome to Season 2 of the Noggin Notes Africa Podcast!
We begin this season with an incredible individual!
Joe van den berg, he is a 32 year old entrepreneur, DJ , comedian and a good human.
Since a young age he has always been interested in the algorithm that makes people laugh. He believes it's the best medicine.
If he could take you out of a bad space for a brief moment, it would be his ultimate goal. Our world needs more compassion and kindness.
Joe was obese as a kid, (106 kilos as a 14 year old) Which he believe definitely affected his mental well being.
He came to a point where he needed to look inward and reflect on what was important to him and what he wanted to achieve with his time on earth. Being overweight as a kid wasn't doing it for him.
Health, Wealth, Time and happiness was what Joe needed to have a prosperous life here. Without one of those you can't fully enjoy your life and that's what his objectives to achieve became.
Joe sys "Life is a gift. it's not always wrapped in a golden ribbon. But it's what you make of the hand you are dealt and I can confidently say I have made the most of it."
Mental health especially amongst men is not talked about. We're told to "man up" or put our feelings on the back seat. Your brain is an organ that can get sick like any other organ in your body.
We need to realise that and check in with our feelings. Check your own star player.
There are many contributing factors that I've learnt that work in conjunction with your mental health and overall well being is diet, exercise, positive thoughts and a purpose.

The scarcity of research mirrors the weakness of mental health services on the continent and the blind eye turned to the problem by many Africans and their governments.
Worldwide, 24% of countries that reported to the WHO's 2014 Mental Health Atlas survey did not have or had not implemented standalone mental health policies; in Africa, this proportion rose to 46%. The region has 1·4 mental health workers per 100 000 people, compared with a global average of 9·0 per 100 000, and also performs relatively poorly with regard to the number of psychiatrists, the number of hospital beds for patients with mental illness, and the coverage of outpatient facilities.
Partly as a consequence, the proportion of Africans who receive treatment for mental health problems is extremely low. While the global annual rate of visits to mental health outpatient facilities is 1051 per 100 000 population, in Africa the rate is 14 per 100 000. In Sierra Leone, for example, the treatment gap (that is, the proportion of those in need who go untreated) for formal mental health services has been estimated at 98·8%.
We welcome Keletso Motsage. She is a Therapist who works with the Botswana Network for Mental Health to equip and empower individuals and companies in the realms of Psychology, Workplace Mental Health and all round effectiveness, on organizational and individual levels.

When you picture “the good life,” what comes to mind? Is it landing a book deal, having a big house, lots of travel? The word “service” doesn’t often come to mind for most. Which is not surprising as we are not taught to revere the idea. In fact, some are given “community service” as a punishment for a crime. We are taught instead that achievements and acquisitions are the definitions of a successful existence, but these are only nurturing to the ego. Instead, a life of service is the highest level of achievement for which one can strive, especially if one is interested in their own happiness.
Everyone is looking for direction in life. Some of the luckiest have a true calling (or callings, really they come in a series). Nature will give us assignments based on our capability and level of awareness. When you bring your awareness out of your small self or ego (the wave of self) and bring it into the Big Self (or ocean of self), your larger nature will point you in the right direction. This is where meditation comes in. It lets us hear that inner voice that is often a set of instructions. The more closely you follow those intuitive instructions, the more complicated and bigger assignments you will get. Meditation also is the tool for finding fulfillment within. When you no longer need to look outside for happiness, you will feel compelled to bring your fulfillment to others. Your life becomes one of service from that point on.
We are joined by an incredible individual who shared is life with us and his quest in life.

Both simple and complex things can be interesting in their own ways, for they have their own strengths and shortcomings.
The greatest and most important adventure of our lives is discovering who we really are. Yet, so many of us walk around either not really knowing or listening to an awful inner critic that gives us all the wrong ideas about ourselves.
We mistakenly think of self-understanding as self-indulgence, and we carry on without asking the most important question we’ll ever ask: Who am I really? As Mary Oliver put it, “what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
Know that you do have something to share with the world. If you will dare to reach down inside your soul and feel around a bit, you will find a long forgotten dream.
A sense of excitement that you once had, a knowingness that you could change the world and make it just a little bit brighter. Reclaim that dream. It never really left you, it just got covered with a little dust. Clean it off and set it upon your mantle of hope. Infuse it with new life, and allow it to come into Being.

Do you have the feeling that you don’t come across as who you really are, that there’s more to you than what the outside world sees of you? Or do you continue to face the same problems over and over? And do you think that your voice plays a role here? Your voice is kind of a barometer, and can be an indication for something that is out of balance in another area of your life.
When you have a better understanding of yourself and why you are the way you are, you can learn how to build upon your personal strengths and overcome your personal limitations.

The start of anything new and unfamiliar always fills us with apprehensions. We get the butterflies in our stomach at the thought of wading into uncharted waters. We cling tightly to the known and often become torn between advancing in our dreams and the uncertainty of the choice itself. It can be either the start of a college degree, moving to a whole new environment or the first time living on your own, a new relationship or a new career.
It is quite alright to be unsure and have those queasy feelings of uncertainties; it is what makes us human. But if we entertain these indecisive thoughts for long, we will be in a long state of inertia.
Do not be afraid to unlearn to learn. We are malleable and can conform our minds and hearts to treasurable experiences; just embrace the magic of it. Never underestimate your own strength. You were born for a purpose and are blessed with the power to achieve it.

In this modern life a lot of people are always busy and often in a hurry. We’ve created a society where a lot of things seem important and urgent. People want to keep up with everything.
When you speed up and you want to get as much done as you possibly can, rushing and hurrying along with everybody else, you will always feel like you’re running behind schedule, always running late and running out of time.
You’ve then put yourself at the mercy of endless productivity. Surrendered to the demon of urgency and getting more things done.
Slowing down will make your more aware of your surroundings and really see where you are and what is there. You will be more mindful and experience increasing moments of peace and bliss. You will inspire others and influence your environment with your calmness. You will think more clearly and act accordingly.

Empowerment is about becoming strong and sure of oneself. Implicit in this state of change is some kind of catalyst from which the person develops strength.
Self-empowerment or “activating self-knowledge - our inner power” generally refers to a change process to develop your autonomy and self-assurance in relating to yourself, others and the world around you. In any quest for self-empowerment, you connect mind and body.

Thoughts are the seeds of all outcomes. The nature of our thoughts is responsible for our success and happiness and even though humans are hardwired to worry because our primal brains are protecting us from threats to our survival, we still have the innate and natural power to decide what kind of experiences we want to fill our lives and how to create our own reality.
Our life is a direct reflection of our attitude combined with thoughts. The way we choose to interpret situations, determines the quality of our life and not the things themselves as the only environment we have control of is our internal one.
Our beliefs serve as a filter or lens by which we interpret the world around us, they affect how we feel and often what we end up doing. Although thoughts are important, without words, a thought can never become a reality. Anything that goes through our life is first expressed in thoughts, in words, and then in actions that lead to the manifestation of our surroundings which in turn foster more thoughts, etc.
We are joined by Natasha Carrizosa, who is a poet and writer. Her work is deeply rooted in her childhood and life experiences. Raised as the daughter of a fierce African-American mother and Mexican father, her writing reflects the dichotomy of these two rich cultures.
She is author of Mexiafricana, heavy light, and crown. Her work has been published in ¡Manteca! - an anthology of Afro-Latino poets, CONTRA: Texas Poets Speak Out, raising mothers, and R2: The Rice Review (Rice University.) She is creator of natty roots & rhyme.
She has performed her work and conducted workshops for audiences in Madrid, Paris, Saint Lucia, New York, Houston, New Mexico, and countless other cities.
She has collaborated with Aspen Challenge, Aspen Youth Leadership Forum, Aspen Words, Bezos Scholars,, Write About Now, Public Poetry, Tintero Projects, WITS (Writers in the Schools) and Poets & Writers. She is a Coolspeaker (youth engagement company.)

Personality traits, abilities, likes and dislikes, your belief system or moral code, and the things that motivate you these all contribute to self-image or your unique identity as a person.
People who can easily describe these aspects of their identity typically have a fairly strong sense of who they are. Struggling to name more than a few of these characteristics might point to a less defined sense of self.
You may not spend much time consciously thinking about your identity, but it still affects your life. Knowing who you are allows you to live with purpose and develop satisfying relationships, both of which can contribute to overall good emotional health.

To “find” something implies that it was at one point lost or missing. But you’re right here! You’re not missing, and you’re certainly not lost. You may have had experiences that resulted in you disconnecting from yourself, but you have always been physically present for those parts of your journey. That’s why I like to describe the process as “returning” to yourself instead of finding yourself.
When we are very young children, we often develop a sense of self that is sure and are less burdened by outside influences. We are carefree and confident in our worth. We’re great at being ourselves when we’re young because we “haven’t learned to disguise our differences.” We move our bodies how we want because we haven’t discovered the word “weird” and we say what’s on our mind because we haven’t learned to hold our tongue. We’re living as our true self.
We welcome Hakeem Anderson-Lesolang. He is a sought after Therapist, Speaker , Best Selling Poet-Author, Peak Performance Coach, Cognitive Behavioural Analyst & Certified NLP Practitioner who believes, “Every cell in your body is eavesdropping on your internal dialogue & on your way to personal mastery, kinder, more powerful language gives you the ability to control & rapidly change your state & thoughts...”
Hakeem Anderson-Lesolang’s impactful therapy style helps you undo limiting beliefs, negative self-talk, burnout, ptsd, phobias, trauma’s and with his active method of engaging the root of one’s problems (not just symptoms & feelings, after the fact) he expertly instals & instils in you a fresh new outlook on an abundant life, money, work and love.

Emotional intelligence helps you build stronger relationships, succeed at school and work, and achieve your career and personal goals. It can also help you to connect with your feelings, turn intention into action, and make informed decisions about what matters most to you.

What if your voice is the medicine that the world desperately needs?
When we tell our stories and others bear witness, the notion that we are disconnected beings suffering alone dissolves under the weight of evidence that this whole concept is merely an illusion and that millions of others are suffering just like us.
Telling your story can be part of your healing process, and it becomes even more powerful when you realize how much your story can help others. People often feel lost and alone when they are going through a difficult situation. Hearing that someone experienced something similar and was able to grow in some way can provide the hope that someone might desperately need.

As we continue celebrating the incredible woman of the world we are honored to welcome Zandile Ngubeni, who is a Parliamentary Liaison Officer at the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.
Women’s empowerment can be defined to promote women’s sense of self-worth, their ability to determine their own choices, and their right to influence social change for themselves and others.
It is closely aligned with female empowerment – a fundamental human right that’s also key to achieving a more peaceful, prosperous world.
Education is one of the most important means of empowering women with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence necessary to participate fully in the development process. So we are so grateful to have Zandile to help us discuss this.

Connecting the mind and the heart!?
What does that mean to you?
Reclaiming your personal power and living your life in alignment with your highest good requires this. The thing is, while our ancient ancestors relied on their inner knowing to, say, safeguard them from lion ambushes and the like, modern society has made knowing how to trust your intuition a lot harder and less socially acceptable. The patriarchal system has created the idea that if it’s not logical, it’s nonsense.
Self discovery can take many different forms from noticing how you react to something in your environment to uncovering your purpose in life. The greater awareness you have of your inner world, the more your actions can line up with the life you want to create.
We are honored to welcome an incredible guest on our upcoming episode. Batsile Ramasodi is a Actor, voice over artist and MC. You might recognise him as the Maître d’ in BBC Lifestyle's show First Dates South Africa.

The stereotype of the “strong black woman” is more than just a cultural trope: Many black women report feeling pressured to act like superwoman, projecting themselves as strong, self-sacrificing, and free of emotion to cope with the stress of race- and gender-based discrimination in their daily lives.
One of the most liberating feelings is being able to openly step into, define and affirm your identity as a Black woman. There are many pros and cons to consider before living abroad and we welcome Thando who is South Africa living in Cambodia where she talks about her journey.

While mental health challenges impact all humans alike, it goes without saying that most men have trouble admitting that they have challenges because of fear of being judged.
Historically, Black men have opted into toxic masculinity to preserve their sanity, and to protect and provide for their families. Often, when Black men dare to express their innermost feelings, they are forced to confront the dangerous paradigm of hypermasculinity. For them, being perceived as soft or feminine is a gamble and seen as weak.
Although the wager may yield tremendous personal growth, Black men navigate internal conflict in attempts to preserve social expectations, outward perception, and personal safety.
We are honored to welcome Onyango Otieno from Nairobi, Kenya who is the Host & Executive Producer for Afro-Masculinity Podcast and the co founder of
Fatuma's Voice who is one of the frontline fighters breaking the mould through education and talks about mental health and vulnerability.
We are here to show Black boys and men their rights to basic human experience: emotion & vulnerability.
