Steven Joseph is a first-generation American, the son of a Holocaust Survivor, a masterful attorney, seasoned negotiator, engaging speaker, award-winning author, and a long-distance runner having completed 53 marathons which include five-times at Boston and 18-time at the NYC Marathon. With a sharp sense of humor that has kept him schuckling back and forth at countless synagogues, he’s also spent many years sitting in stillness on a cushion, trying desperately to empty his mind while staring at a blank white wall at the Village Zendo. Despite his extensive life experience, he remains wise enough to acknowledge that he hasn't figured everything out — except, perhaps, for the art of effective crankiness.

Steven’s books include The Last Surviving Dinosaur: The TyrantoCrankaTsuris, The Crankatsuris Method: A Grownup Guide to Effective Crankiness, and the "Snoodles" series, which includes Snoodles, Kidoodles, Poodles, and Lots and Lots of Noodles and Snoodles in Space: A Snoodle, The Zoodle Kidoodles, and One Happy Schmoodle. His latest book, Cranky Superpowers: Life Lessons Learned from the Common CrankaTsuris Chronicles, delivers more of his signature wisdom as he continues to explore and celebrate the cranky corners of life.

Despite his long partnership with therapists and his time spent as an attorney, Steven remains grounded and approachable with a wit that is as quick as his award-winning blog is insightful. Jonathan N. Pruitt is a lifelong educator, a former scientific researcher, and a provocative fantasy author. Rising from humble beginnings in a rural, economically disadvantaged county in Florida, he skyrocketed to academic success, earning a Ph.D. at the youthful age of 24.

Pruitt's journey took him from the concert halls as a child prodigy pianist to the globally recognized halls of esteemed universities, including the University of Pittsburgh, Princeton University, and the University of California, Santa Barbara.

However, his trajectory met turbulence with an international scandal in 2020 that questioned the integrity of his research methods.

Proving the human animal can make profound changes, Pruitt rose from the ashes of controversy to become a fantasy author.

With his debut novel, “The Amber Menhir,” Pruitt delivers biting humor, deep human insights, and a unique scientist's perspective.

His life experiences—from living in diverse corners of the world like South Africa, Namibia, Australia, and Canada to navigating the wild landscape of his career—richly inform his narratives.

In Pruitt's words, “I can be far more honest in fiction than I could have ever contemplated in nonfiction.” This theme shines within his storytelling, defying reality yet resonating with emotional truth. He makes readers question the differences between good and evil and the murky area between the two.

Kelly’s books meet children where they are in their journey. They are about permission and helping children see the world in both an entertaining and inspiring way.

Her titles are reversals of familiar phrases, such as “Boots Rain” rather than rain boots. By shifting perspectives, she sees things through a child’s eyes. Her energy is kinetic. Her journey as an author is uncommon, and the way children respond to her and her books is life-changing.

Walter Stephen Geeding, ever since he ran away from home as a teen-ager to gallivant across North America with his best friend, has always been a curious man of adventure who has lived his life as wildly as the characters in his books. In fact, it is hard to separate Walter from the exploits his characters unveil on thepages of his books. At age 17, Walter was a hippie who traveled all over the nation and Canada in an old convertible. He did odd jobs – YMCA instructor, painted water towers, built homes, photo lab technician – and got himself into all kinds of brushes with the law. He even shot himself – twice – accidentally.

Eventually he turned his life around, and at the age of 38, he earned a BA in English from Missouri Southern State University. In 1996 he earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Tulsa. He became a prosecutor for McDonald County, Missouri, for eight years. Then he switched sides and spent 15 years as a defense attorney, owning and operating his law practice that specialized in criminal and civil law. He was a bar president of the 40th Judicial Circuit.

He is a born storyteller. For nearly five years he wrote poetry for the Neosho Weekly. His published books include the Endless Times series (Volume One: The Path of Kokopelli; Volume Two: Murphys Diggins); Colony trilogy (Book One: The End; Book Two: Narrations of Nui; Book Three: The Beginning); Even The Mice Get Fat (a collection of Christmas poems); and Pictures of Life; Rhyming Mind Pictures (poetic observations).

Walter is a rugged outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and archery. He has two children, two step-children, many ex-wives, and 14 grandchildren.

Dan Flanigan holds a Ph.D. in History from Rice University and J.D. from the University of Houston. He taught Jurisprudence at the University of Houston and American Legal History at the University of Virginia.

His first published book was his Ph.D. dissertation, The Criminal Law of Slavery and Freedom, 1800-1868. He moved on from academia to serve the civil rights cause as a school desegregation lawyer, followed by a long career as a finance attorney in private law practice. Dan became a name partner in the Polsinelli law firm in Kansas City, created its Financial Services practice, chaired its Real Estate & Financial Services Department for two decades, and established the firm's New York City office and served as its managing partner until October 2022. His legal bio may be viewed at www.polsinelli.com/professionals/dflanigan.

Taking a break from the law practice for two years, Dan and his wife, Candy, founded Sierra Tucson, a prominent alcohol and drug treatment center in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to publishing five books since 2019, he has also written stage plays including Secrets (based on the life of Eleanor Marx) and Moondog's Progress (based on the life of Alan Freed).

His novella, Dewdrops, was originally written for the stage and enjoyed a full-cast staged reading at the Theatre of the Open Eye in New York. Its director described the play as a "powerful" work about "addiction in America—addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex, danger, power, and to finding 'The Answer,' with characters that are "well drawn, real, and actors love to portray them."Dan has written a feature film screenplay of Mink Eyes and a pilot for a TV series called O'Keefe.

He serves on the Board of Directors of Childhood USA, the U.S. arm of the World Childhood Foundation, established by Queen Silvia of Sweden, working to end child sexual abuse and exploitation everywhere.

Dan divides his time among Kansas City, New York City, and Los Angeles. The scandals, schemes, and scams of American life, from Wall Street shenanigans to the Mafia, from the 1980s to the present day, provide a rich setting for an exciting new kind of detective novel, The Peter O'Keefe series, that is a blend of literary fiction and crime thriller, written by finance, bankruptcy, and banking lawyer Dan Flanigan.

He has had a front-row seat for the past four decades to the mind of the corrupt, the criminal, and the con – and employs his experience and expertise to give his action-packed books a feeling of gritty authenticity. His newest book, On Lonesome Roads, the third installment in the series, is a gripping tale with well-drawn characters, especially when it comes to Detective Peter O'Keefe, a physically scarred and emotionally battered Vietnam vet. This is serious fiction wrapped in the cloak of a hard hitting, exciting detective novel – a story that has it all – terror, murder, addiction, sex, obsession, crime, and doom, yes – but also friendship, fatherhood, integrity, duty, and sacrifice, and love.

Flanigan is a veteran practicing lawyer who gives us an insider's real-world view of the formal and informal workings of our legal system and the schemes and scams germinating in the seamy underbelly of our business world.

Schoolmates weighed in on how I should develop the characters and storylines. Zara and Lilly turn their considerable sleuthing talents toward unraveling a series of family mysteries...but their quest begins in earnest when they learn that the murderer and thief who nearly killed Lilly has escaped from custody.

Human-Animal Relationship Awareness Week is observed annually in the second week of November. This year, the Week extends from November 13 -19. As she shared it with her 7lb rescue dog, Mr. Monks. Not only did she save his life but he saved hers. Her book, Me And Mr. Monks is a tribute to him and all that he meant to her.

Local nurse, Dawn Blair was diagnosed with Lyme disease, and to say it took a toll on her would be putting it mildly. For 4 years, Dawn dealt with fatigue, crippling migraines, chronic insomnia, loss of balance, dizziness, brain fog, neuropathy, and open sores/ulcers over her body and face that would not heal. Physically beaten down to the point where she was contemplating suicide, Dawn turned to her rescue dog, Mr. Monks for comfort. And Mr. Monks delivered.

Dawn has been featured in numerous news outlets with her most recent appearance being on ABC Portland. Would you be interested in speaking with her?

Dr. Joanne Intrator’s highly anticipated memoir, “Summoned To Berlin” describes the challenges she faced and overcame during her decade-long search for restitution for 16 Wallstrasse, a major Berlin building that was stolen from her family by the Nazis. Her story has been featured in international magazine articles and museum exhibits.

Joanne spent nine years confronting German bureaucrats, who buried her case at the bottom of the pile and told her that her family would “probably be dead” by the time she won. She was also ordered to split the proceeds with a Nazi heiress, the daughter of the men who had stolen the building. Joanne discovered that her building had been used to make Nazi flags -- and one million yellow stars – the same stars that were sewn onto her grandfather’s clothes.

Dr. Intrator was born and raised in New York City. As a psychiatrist for 30 years, she conducted groundbreaking research on brain imaging of psychopaths. The associated paper was published in the journal Biological Psychiatry and is frequently cited. The New Yorker magazine wrote about her research. Joanne has stated that her expertise in psychopaths helped her to understand and confront the German bureaucrats, and ultimately gain restitution for her family's building.

By 17, Lynne Cox had already swum the English Channel twice. She’s also swam in water that’s 32 degrees. Escaped shark attacks, saved whales. Lynne has swum the Nile, the Bering Strait, the Cape of Good Hope.

Throughout her lifetime, she’s logged nearly 55,000 miles in the water. That’s around the globe…twice.

All to say: Lynne knows a thing or two about feats of athletic achievement. So when she saw a video of a Newfoundland dog leaping from an airborne helicopter into Italian waters to save someone from drowning, Lynne was transfixed.

TALES OF AL is the inspiring story of Lynne’s adventures on Italy’s Lake Idroscalo, at the famed Italian School of Water Rescue Dogs (SICS), which has trained over 300 dogs for sea, land, and air rescue (about 30 rescues are carried out along the Italian coast during each swimming season). There, Lynne meets the dog at the center of our story:

Al, an irresistible (and slightly untrainable) chocolate Newfoundland. And follows her journey to becoming an expertly trained—and highly specialized—water rescue dog.

LYNNE COX was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Los Alamitos, California.

She set open-water swimming records all over the world, swimming without a wet suit.

She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and has had Her articles appear in many publications, among them The New Yorker, The New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times Magazine.

Cox lives in Long Beach, California and continues to swim every chance she gets.

This episode brought to you by www.theauthorsporch.com

I moved a lot as a kid. As a result, I attended seven different elementary schools. Books became my coping mechanism. They replaced the awkwardness associated with starting a new school, walking into a new classroom, and making new friends. Books didn’t judge, they didn’t bully, and they didn’t exclude me from whatever activities were going on. Not once did I ever pick up a book and feel rejected.

I was methodical in my reading habits. Before middle school, I stuck to nonfiction. History, geography, and zoology. I would pick a section of the library and check out all the books on a given subject. I covered a multitude of topics; the Revolutionary war, the Serengeti, the Great Depression, Manifest Destiny, pirates, you get the picture. I distinctly remember one weekend checking out three separate books on World War II fighter pilots. Needless to say, the librarians knew me by name. I was voracious and would finish a dozen books a week. I rushed through in-class work so I could read and escape from the world.

When I reached middle school, I discovered fiction. It started with the first book I ever bought, Tarzan of the Apes. I was enthralled. So much so that I rode my bike to different malls, collecting the entire series in paperback (24 books in all). I read each one twice and several three times or more. I branched off into their works by Edgar Rice Burroughs, specifically the Barsoom series (otherwise known as John Carter of Mars). Finding more books to read was like pulling the thread on the tapestry. Jules Verne, Tolkien, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Larry Niven, Terry Brooks, Harry Turtledove, Clive Cussler, and the list goes on. And of course, who can forget the time someone challenged me to read Dhalgren (at a tender 14 years old). Thanks, Ken.

Finally, my attention turned to more sophisticated fiction and non-fiction. My good friend Matt introduced me to Barbara Tuchman, an excellent historian, and several Russian classics by Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky. English and American classics also found their place.

Somewhere along the line, my thoughts shifted from reading to writing. A long conversation with my high school friend Dustan probably inspired me. In my late twenties, a story began to form that would take 20+ years to complete, a story I am ready to share with the world.

I’ve had incredible support, from my beautiful wife Sonya to my amazing kids, Chris and McKenna. All my friends and family (you all know who you are, but if you need to be called out, let me know). I am forever grateful for their steady praise, honest feedback, harsh criticism, and above all, endless encouragement. Any success I have as a writer will always be erected upon the foundation of their enthusiasm.

Meet The Author - Laurel Anne Hill

Laurel Anne Hill—author and former underground storage tank operator—grew up in San Francisco with more dreams of adventure than good sense or money. Her close brushes with death, love of family, respect for honor and belief in a higher power continue to influence her writing and her life. Laurel has authored over 30 published short stories and two award-winning YA novels, most recently THE ENGINE WOMAN’S LIGHT, the gripping spirits-meet-steampunk, coming-of-age heroic journey of a young Latina in an alternate 19th Century California. (THE ENGINE WOMAN’S LIGHT has won a total of 13 honors and awards, including a Kirkus Star.) Sand Hill Review Press is on schedule to publish Laurel’s next YA novel—PLAGUE OF FLIES: REVOLT OF THE SPIRITS, 1846—in October 2021.

Book #2 Description

Plague of Flies: Revolt of the Spirits, 1846

In 1846 Alta California, Catalina Delgado daydreams about her future: roping cattle, marrying Angelo Ortega and raising children. But now, invaders from the United States—the Bear Flaggers—have declared war against México, her country. Bear Flaggers have imprisoned one close family friend and murdered others. What fate might befall her parents, abuelito and younger brothers? And what about her best friend, a Costanoan servant girl? How can Catalina, only sixteen, help protect all those she loves?

An old vaquero once predicted a mysterious spirit man would someday ride off with Catalina. This has clouded her reputation as a chaste young woman, one reason why Angelo’s father doesn’t want her for a future daughter-in-law. Now Catalina learns another reason. Her mamá is not her natural mother. Catalina is a mestiza, the daughter of her papi and an indigenous woman.

Catalina prays for guidance from the Catholic saints, then dares to leave her bedroom at night to seek a spiritual vision from Coyote. She ends up riding into the sky with Spirit Man. Later they remove gold nuggets from a river to prevent Bear Flaggers or anyone else from discovering the treasure. Will this be Catalina’s duty for the rest of her life? And is Spirit Man honorable—or a devil?

For the sake of all she holds dear, Catalina must risk what is left of her reputation, her future with Angelo, her life and her very soul. When hopes and dreams clash with cold reality, Catalina finds the fortitude to accomplish what only she can do.

Meet The Author - Alan T. Black

I was raised and grew up in the United Methodist Church. While I do proudly embrace my background and personal history within the United Methodist Church, I do feel that ultimately what is important is not the denomination that you are a part of. What matters most is the relationship that you have with the Lord. Part and parcel to any relationship is the level of commitment that one makes to it. With any and all relationships, they are going to take time to grow.

Through the years, if I were to describe my relationship with the Lord using one word it would be “transformation.” Continuing to grow daily in my walk with the Lord, and as well continue to display the fruits of his Spirit daily is for me what my life is all about. Frankly, for these times, my attitude and belief are that the world is looking to those who are Christians to see if, in fact, their talk does indeed match their walk.

As is the case with each of us I have experienced many twists and turns along the road of life. But each and every step along that road has led me to this point in life to humbly say that I am an author. But most of all to be able to say that I am a Christian author to me is the most important thing of all.

To everything there is a time and season. Though I was unsure of what was in store for me, I am blessed to say that by just being obedient and trusting in the Lord I am now able to say and mostly importantly show others that God will qualify you and lead you to accomplish what His charge is for you by just being a willing servant. As this is a fact, what He has done through me, it was done so to give Him the glory.

Clyve Rose has been writing historical romance fiction for the best part of two decades. She works in the historical romance, fantasy, and speculative fiction genres. She also creates literary novels under an alternative pen name. In between her devotion to fiction writing, Clyve researches various mythologies and historical periods, often basing her characters on actual historical personalities.

When Clyve isn’t writing fiction, she can be found pounding the sand at just about any of the beautiful beaches near her Australian home. She is also addicted to short-haul ocean swims and has a ‘thing’ for Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the Seas. Much of the inspiration in her stories are drawn from the ocean landscapes near her home.

One of her novels was longlisted for a 2010 Hachette Award for Fiction while her paranormal short story The One Below is a Sexy Scribbles award-winning piece.

The first piece she ever had published was a fictional biography of an erotica writer who made a living crafting extremely explicit dating profiles for online chat sites. She lives fairly simple these days, sharing her home with a small white demon-dog and a budding Amazon warrior. Clyve Rose believes that love is the highest and strongest force in the world and that it only manifests when we are our best and truest selves. Anything less, and we diminish our divinity. She believes she will continue writing about love in all its various, glorious forms, and that one day her epitaph will read ‘just one more read-through’.

Shawna Rodrigues’ roots are in a small town and a big family. Her appreciation for beauty stemmed from the orchards, lakes, and mountains of Southern Oregon. Her sense of adventure from chasing siblings in their alfalfa field and clamoring to get the perfect blackberry.

Her drive to make a difference meant a career that moved her all over the United States and helped her learn how much she loved experiencing unknown places and connecting with people. She found that the illumination of a cityscape could be just as entrancing as the brilliant stars of a country night. She also discovered her passion for travel—whether lounging on a beach, traversing a mountain, or savoring a downtown coffee shop.

In 2017, when the world went sideways—as it sometimes does—she half-jokingly told her friends she needed to write or else the universe would keep giving her things to write about.

And here she is interweaving life lessons with endearing characters and transformative experiences to create women’s fiction that helps us see how universal many of our experiences are and what a gift it can be to escape into the pages of a book.

Tonight we welcome Joyce Reynolds-Ward to The Authors Porch.

www.theauthorsporch.com

Joyce Reynolds-Ward is a speculative fiction writer who splits her time between

Enterprise and Portland, Oregon.

Her short stories have appeared in Black-Eyed Peas on New Year’s Day, Children of a Different Sky, River, How Beer Saved the World 1 and 2, Fantasy Scroll Magazine, and Trust and Treachery among others.

Her books include three series: The Netwalk Sequence (Netwalk: Extended

Edition, Netwalker Uprising, Netwalk’s Children, and Netwalking Space),

Goddess’s Honor (Beyond Honor, Pledges of Honor, Challenges of Honor,

Choices of Honor, and Judgment of Honor) and The Martiniere Legacy (base

trilogy Inheritance, Ascendant, Realization; related work The Heritage of Michael Martiniere and Broken Angel: The Lost Years of Gabriel Martiniere plus three forthcoming books), as well as current standalone Alien Savvy and Klone’s Stronghold.

Joyce has edited two anthologies, Pulling Up Stakes and Whimsical Beasts. She

has earned Semifinalist and Honorable Mention placements in Writers of the

Future. Her book Pledges of Honor was a 2018 Self Published Fantasy Blog-Off

Semifinalist.

Besides writing, Joyce enjoys reading, quilting, horses, and other outdoor

activities. She is a member of Soroptimist International of Wallowa County.

Joyce is also a Board member of the Northwest Independent Writers Association.

Joyce spent ten years working as a special education teacher in a small rural

middle school on Mt. Hood. That job opened the pathway for skiing and spending a few years as a teacher ski bum.

She spent two years teaching online PE and Health (yes, it’s doable, no, it doesn’t involve Skype) which was a fascinating experience in many ways. This experience provides the foundation for one of Joyce’s recent books, Klone’s stronghold, in which the central character needs to figure out how to teach her cryptid construct students. The ski bum teacher life also drove a good part of the background of Joyce’s characters in the Netwalk Sequence series.

Joyce also currently owns one horse, a 20-year-old Quarter Horse mare, Miss

Olena Chic (Mocha). Joyce’s horse experience goes back to age nine when her parents were given a yearling Shetland pony. She acquired not only a lot of bruises from that pony but a decent riding seat.

Unlike many other writers in the science fiction and fantasy genre, however, Joyce rides Western and not dressage, and aligns more with cowboys than knights.

Somehow that shows up in her fantasy stories. Joyce’s horse background also plays a large role in her most recent work, The Martiniere Legacy series.

Welcome L. M. Archer To The Authors Porch www.theauthorsporch.com

About L.M.

I was first drawn to writing as a way to express my feelings when oftentimes, I found that I couldn’t say them out loud. That’s why my writing is more on the dark side of the romance spectrum. I tend to write in a way that showcases real scenarios and events. My books tackle mental health, moral values, religion, and many other topics that are raw and real.

I’m not afraid to make my readers look at the darker side of humanity and question the very foundation of life and existence.

The topics in my books can be triggering, but I am a firm believer that you need to shed light on certain situations. Keeping them in the dark only hurts more.

Tanya Ross was born and raised in San Diego County, her “happy place.” Although Southern California is a particular kind of paradise, she desires a world where everyone is kind, compassionate, and upbeat, which became one of the themes of her novel, Rising Up.

For thirty-two years she was an educator of English, history, AVID, and student leadership. She loves teaching and kids, her students a daily inspiration. Her exit from the educational arena allowed her to indulge her hopes, dreams, and goals in what she taught for so many years–writing. This first novel begins her lifelong dream of writing meaningful novels for young adults.

When she’s not creating new worlds, you can find her reading, spending time with her husband and two kids, or walking her golden retriever, Honey.
