Text: Luke 7:36-47The mark of our most meaningful relationships is that the person sees us at our worst and loves us anyway. The same is certainly true of Jesus, who knows everything about us and still loves us fiercely. When we understand this, it leads us to love more deeply and to receive Jesus’ love with overflowing gratitude and praise.

Text: Psalm 139:1-3, 7-10 New Mobile Friendly BulletinsIsn’t it nice to be around dear friends where we can “just be ourselves.” What is at our core? Do we even know? If so, do we approve or are we on the fence when it comes to an authentic life? The Lord, who searches us and knows us, is calling us to life an authentic life that is rooted in God’s love so that we can serve and lift up others.

We’re both saints and sinners at the same time. Not bad, but broken. We’re in need of restoration on a daily basis. Fortunately for us, God and Jesus know that about us from the get-go. We kick off our Fall sermon series with an examination of what it means to be one of God’s saints, but also, as the apostle Paul states, “the worst of sinners.”

Text: Ruth 1:1-5
At some point in our lives, we will be faced with the loss of loved ones that completely change our lives and maybe even our circumstances forever. The story of Ruth and Naomi gives us a moving narrative about how to surround those who experience the deep grief of loss and even lead us to find hope, courage, and the community that sustains us. Let’s trust the larger story in our lives - we are always in God’s loving hands no matter what.

Text: Romans 12:9-18 Living with others can be a challenge but the apostle Paul gives us sage advice: “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” This sounds good but is it more easily said than done? A cynic once described large churches as “more sinners under one roof!” But God equips us with all the grace we need and more to live in harmony with all people. Text: Acts 1:3-11
Our new sermon series will explore how we live with others, how we live without others, how we live with unchangeable things. But before we get to any of those topics, we begin with how we live with Christ. How do we see Jesus’ presence in our lives and in the lives of those around us? Are we able to learn to see Christ in the people and places where we never thought to look? How are we being witnesses of Jesus in this world that needs his love?

Text: Matthew 22:1-14
The parable of the wedding banquet delves in the question of who, exactly, is invited into the party that is God’s kingdom. What does it mean if we don’t have the “right clothes” to wear to the party? Are we party crashers if Jesus himself invites us and even provides the “right clothes” when he gives us his own righteousness?

Text: Matthew 19:13-15
We get the words of Jesus wrong all the time, just like his earliest followers. When a group of children were hanging out with Jesus and having a great time, the disciples wanted to send them away for “bothering” Jesus. But Jesus knows children are the center of God’s love, not on the margins of it. Jesus sees children as keys to understanding everything that he is doing in and through the world. Jesus is inviting us into a delightful adventure of encountering the world with the fresh eyes of those who are seeing it for the first time.

Text: Matthew 18:21-35 “Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and waiting for the rat to die,” writes Anne Lamott. We may think ourselves beyond generous to forgive someone seven times but Jesus challenges our thinking by saying, “not seven times but seventy-seven times.” In other words, for those of us who follow Christ, forgiveness becomes not so much an act but a way of life. How are we equipping ourselves to face this giant of resentment?

Even while God is equipping us to “do all things through Christ who strengthens [us],” Jesus warns us that “life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” How do we measure our success and have we ever “arrived” or does God call us to deeper purposes than success as our world defines it? Text: Matthew 5:21-26
God’s Word provides us with solid reasoning on the importance of settling our differences with others. The God of peace asks us to be reconciled with our brothers and sisters even before we come before the Lord in worship. Wasn’t it peace that Jesus was showing us in his death on the cross? How is God calling us to transform our anger into something life-giving before we do and say things that we later regret?

The young shepherd boy faced Goliath, the champion of the Philistine army, with five smooth stones and an unshakable trust in God. We face our own giants as we journey through life but each of us wrestles with doubts that shake our faith in God, in others, and in ourselves. How do our doubts cripple us and cause us to stumble? John 20:19-23
“A Starry Night.” John’s Gospel gives us a picture of the disciples who were locked away in fear after the death of Jesus. But Jesus breathed on them and gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit along with the words, “peace be with you.” How is Jesus calling each of us to move from fear into peace? Text: Luke 24: 13-35We may very well ask how disciples could travel the road to Emmaus with Jesus and not recognize him. Jesus may be getting ready to leave his disciples at his ascension into heaven, but he promises them and us that he doesn’t leave us as orphans. Jesus brings us together to become one body, united through the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper. On Maundy Thursday (“commandment” Thursday), we remember the new commandment that Jesus gives us to love one another, and we celebrate Holy Communion along with our children who receive their First Communion. The “Rescue Story” of our salvation through Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross begins here. Join us for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter worship as we experience together the Passion and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week for Christians around the world. As our Sunday School children join us in worship with palm branches and shouts of “hosanna,” we hear together the story of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, and we see how events will turn that lead Jesus toward the cross of Calvary- for us and for our salvation. Christians today still need to raise our voices in singing hosanna– “Lord, save us!”

Jonah is the ironic foil to every other human and non-human character in the book–all of whom obey God without question or protest. In Matt 8:23-27, Jesus exemplifies peace 4 of 5 in the thick of disruption. Disruptions have a way of exposing things that are otherwise buried beneath the surface. The onset of a violent storm lays bare the disciples’ lack of trust. But it also simultaneously exposes Jesus for who he is: the Lord of creation who stops the storm and saves his followers.

Part of our Lenten journey involves us looking with honesty at our own sin and our need for redemption. Before the events of Good Friday unfold, Peter is overcome by fear and denies knowing Jesus. How do our own fears get in the way us following Jesus? Is the cause of Jesus’ ministry a lost cause? Is Peter a lost cause? Are we a lost cause or are there perhaps events coming in the week ahead that wipe out all the pain of the past?

In this world, all of us are unfinished. Every vocational responsibility we have– to our family, friends, neighbors, creation–represents an opportunity to grow in love, excellence, and faithfulness. We do not undertake that effort alone. God accompanies us, helping us each step of the way to see others as God does–to see Nineveh, not through the lens of spite and anger, but rather of compassion and mercy.

Text: Luke 15:11-31In Jesus’ most famous and poignant parable, we see how a wayward son is welcomed home by a father who has never stopped waiting, watching, and loving. There is a place at the “welcome home” banquet for each of us as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper and remember Christ’s sacrifice: given and shed for you.

Luther’s theology of the cross teaches us to look for God in the midst of suffering–not only the suffering of Christ on the cross but also the suffering of God’s children in this world. God meets us with a word of hope in the fire (Daniel 3), in broken heartedness (Ps 34:18), and in death itself (Jonah 3). In these places we learn one of the most basic but crucial lessons of faith: to cry out for help to a God who is good and tenderhearted.

Do we value ourselves and our neighbors properly? Jesus’ parable of the lost coin tells us that God sees each of us as a treasure and there’s nowhere that we can go where we will be separated from his love for us.

The story of Zaccheus the Tax Collector is one that shows us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s love and God’s redemptive purpose for us. Randy Newman’s old song said that “short people got no reason to live…” but Jesus begs to differ!

Jonah 1:17, Psalm 139:1-2, 7-10
Encounters with God often come in the form of disruptions to everyday life. They take us off course and throw us off balance. But in many cases, disruptions have the potential to bring us into a sacred encounter with God and our neighbor in ways that we might not expect–or in ways that might show us something new about ourselves. The story of Jonah invites us to wonder whether and how the God of Jonah might be entangled with the disruptions in our lives.

Text: Luke 15:1-7 In the first of three parables from Luke 15, Jesus invites us to think about those persons who are outside of the fold. How does this story inform the way we approach ministry and life as we encounter people who seem to be lost sheep? How is God seeking us and calling us to repentance when we fail to see ourselves as lost sheep who are redeemed by the Good Shepherd?

Luke 4:1-13
Perhaps our lives, every once in a while, would benefit from an audit. How do we spend our time? Are we efficient? Are we doing what we have been called to do? How much of what we do is an old habit or the result of feeling like we’re stuck? The point this week will be: thinking about the things that we do or focus on that doesn’t bring joy and goodness into our lives. And also, when we say nothing no to something and get rid of it – there’s some new space for a good and joy-giving YES!

When pressed to winnow down all the laws into only one Jesus said, “Got it. Love God. Love people.” The point – the people who love and serve God and – as a result – people who feel called and inspired to go love and serve other people in the name of Jesus. Just imagine a world where people are more concerned about someone other than him or herself. That in the world that God wants and envisions.

2 Corinthians 1:18-22
This is the topic so I can show a clip of the Jim Carrey movie: “Yes, Man.” Many times when people ask us to do something, even before they go for the ask, we are thinking of how we can say no. After all, we are all so busy as it is. There is simply no more time for doing one more thing. That is, unless the ask is about something that we love doing. The point of this focus is – try to find more and more room in our lives for saying Yes.

Jesus – the only perfect person the world has ever known – would often just off by himself and pray. Here he was – God in the flesh and he felt the need to go and ask for help. Simply put, if he needed help – we’re gonna need a whole lot of help – like – all day – every day!

By a certain age, many of us have formed quite strong thoughts, feelings, and opinions about most things and a lot of people. In all candor, it is best for us to, each and every day, enter the world with an open heart – giving all people a chance to surprise and impress us. Many times our preconceived notions about things and/or people adversely affect our live with others and the world at large.

A book just sitting on a shelf will not enter our hearts, minds, and souls. God’s holy word in the Bible is meant to be read, studied, questioned, analyzed, and then, live out in daily life. The fact of the matter is, the Bible is complex and sometimes just plain hard to understand. That should not make us afraid to crack it open and see what the Holy Spirit does with the Word of God.

To weather the worst things in life, we not only need our Lord, but we need the strength of others around us to carry us through. We need to stick together, and we need the resiliency of our faith to help one another. When life gets bumpy, we are to help and encourage one another and be strong for those who, at the moment, are struggling. “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Text: Jonah 2:1-10
We often see the best in humanity (and perhaps also the worst) when storms challenge a community – first responders and humanitarians right alongside price gougers and swindlers. Human beings, it turns out, are not the most reliable creatures. In the Bible, Jonah doesn’t trust God’s advice and fails to follow it, but ultimately he relies on God’s goodness because God is good all the time. While wind and rain and the storms of life will toss us about, we can trust that God will hold us up and save us from the pits we fall into.

Jesus’ parable of the wise and foolish builders seems to suggest the inevitability of the storms of life. The rains will come, the streams will rise, and the winds will blow. But we can build our life on the rock foundation of Jesus Christ and God invites us to connect to him on a daily basis through God’s gift of faith. Our series begins with a focus on what it means to be “storm proof.”

The first recorded miracle of Jesus’ ministry happened at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. When Jesus turns water into wine, he not only saves a family from potential shame and embarrassment, but he also sets a pattern for all future miracles: to point people to the larger miracles that are performed each day by God the Father as water is continually turned to wine through the rains that come to nourish the vineyards. Jesus shows that he cares about the details of our lives as he showers us with unexpected blessings of the finest vintage!

The circumstances that continue to rock this world leave us feeling uncertain and rattled. But God continues to speak to us in the midst of the daily torrent of heartbreaking news headlines and the harsh realities of sin and hate that seem to have the final word. The promises of God are upheld continously by God’s almighty hand and come to us like a beacon of light in the dark: “though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed” (Isaiah 54:10). We are prone to respond like Jesus’ disciples to the teaching that we are slaves to sin: “we have never been slaves of anyone.” And yet, we most assuredly do sin and are in need of a Savior who has delivered on his promise to set us free from the power of sin in our lives. The word “grace” cuts to the heart of our faith and teaches us about the nature of God’s love for us in a way that our hearts need to hear again and again. It’s not called “Amazing Grace” for no reason! This is most certainly true!

Text: Romans 12:1-2 There is always more than enough to share. But God is calling us to give of ourselves in ways that may take us out of our comfortable lives and into the lives of others. What does it mean to offer ourselves as “living sacrifices”? As we say in our offering prayer: “our selves, our time, and our possessions.”

Text: Romans 5:1-5 What we need more than anything these days is hope. In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he tells us precisely where hope comes from and how we can get it. Romans 5 also tells us that “hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.” This is the good news that we’ve been looking for and it is well worth sharing!

50 days after Easter we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit - crossing all boundaries, bringing the wideness of God's mercy to places we least expect it. Jesus promises his disciples that they will be accompanied by the Holy Spirit.

Text: John 17:20-26 We have seen in recent years the turmoil that can be caused by deep divisions in our nation and in our world. On “the other side” of this division is the unity that God brings us to through the power of his resurrection and through the Holy Spirit. Even as Christ prays for the unity of all of his people, so we are called to pray and to work for unity in the world.

Just like Jesus’ disciples, we are often faced with fears and feelings of being abandoned by God. Jesus reminds us of the promise of the Holy Spirit and we are given the assurance that on “the other side” of these fears, God has given us a peace that is like nothing that the world can offer us.

This mortal life has been called “the vale of tears” as it brings us many trials and tribulations. Is there something better for us on “the other side”? According to Jesus who comes to us as our Risen Savior, there most assuredly is eternal life that we can experience both now and after we die. This is most certainly true!

Jesus brings us together to become one body, united through the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper. On Maundy Thursday (“commandment” Thursday), we remember the new commandment that Jesus gives us to love one another and we celebrate Holy Communion along with our children who receive their First Communion. The service also offers the opportunity for all to receive a blessing and the assurance of forgiveness through the laying on of hands, an ancient practice in the church that acknowledges our need for connection and our need for God’s grace.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week for Christians around the world. As our Sunday School children join us in worship with palm branches and shouts of “hosanna,” we hear together the story of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem and we see how events will turn that lead Jesus toward the cross of Calvary—for us and for our salvation. Christians today still need to raise our voices in singing hosanna—“Lord, save us!”

Text: Luke 7:36-50
As we conclude our series, we take a look at the topic of worth. Do we ever, even subconsciously, assign more worth to some people than to others- including ourselves? Jesus is all about showing us the value of each person and this is shown beautifully in the story of a sinful woman who responds to Jesus with genuine worship. We are taught throughout the scriptures that Jesus deals tenderly with the outcast, with the underdog, with those whom society has written off or rejected. As we approach Holy Week, we realize that God has shown us the true value of every child of God through the cross of Jesus: worth the cost of my Son’s life.

Text: John 11:17-27 What are the things that “rattle” us the most in our lives? In our series so far, we have examined fear, doubt and over-commitment. This Sunday, we look at uncertainty and we find ourselves being able to relate with Mary and Martha who are distraught over the death of their brother Lazarus: “Lord, if you have had been here…” How does Jesus respond to them and to us in our times of uncertainty? How is God bringing resurrection into our lives and helping us to replace uncertainty with faith?

Text: Luke 14:15-24 The Christian faith brings words of challenge to us as well as words of comfort. When our schedules are filled to the brim with commitments but we leave little room for the things that Jesus calls us to do, Jesus reminds us of our true priorities through a parable that speaks to our over-scheduled modern lives. Text: Ephesians 2:19-22
Community lies at the heart of our faith and life together in the church. As we all seek a place to belong, we are reminded by God's Word that we are "no longer aliens, but God's people and members of God's household." We continue to recognize and celebrate how God is building us together into a holy place where God is living among us by his Spirit.

As our Rally Days continue, we celebrate St. Andrew's music ministry and, specifically, we give thanks and praise to God for Jan Maudlin's many years of music ministry with the Canticle Choir. We praise God for his marvelous gift of music, of which Martin Luther said, "next after theology, I give to music the highest place and the greatest honor."

Text: Romans 12:9-12 God, through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, has given us ample reason to be “joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer.” As we wrap up our series, we examine Christian hope that is firmly rooted not in mere optimism that denies the reality of contemporary problems but in the truth of God’s love for us and for the all the world; a truth that changes everything.

The story of the early church paints a compelling picture of what “doing life” together can look like and reinforces the need for a deeper experience of community that is so elusive today as social media gives a false sense of community in many ways.

Text: John 21:15-17 Forgiveness is hard. But Christians have the best role model imaginable in the person of Jesus. What's the point of forgiveness if it doesn't happen authentically enough for relationships to grow and thrive from that point forward? Peter learns that forgiveness from Jesus comes with a bonus: a reinstated measure of trust that helps to heal the relationship. What does this mean for us as people who need to both give and receive forgiveness?

Text: Hebrews 4:12-13 The Bible is used in many different ways. In some countries it has been banned, in some places it has been weaponized or politicized, but there is one thing that it cannot be: ignored. For those who dismiss it as outdated and outmoded, the author of Hebrews reminds us that “the word of God is living and active… sharper than any two-edged sword.” How does the Bible continue to speak to us in ways that are so relevant that they shape our very identity?

Text: Luke 18:15-17 When the disciples tried to stop people from bringing their children to Jesus, Jesus responded with these words: “let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them…” When we see the truth that all people are God’s children, what can we do to foster relationship with them and how do we bring them to the Savior in meaningful ways? Text: Matthew 4:12-17 In times of great turbulent change, we need the comfort of the Gospel more than ever. We have seen great darkness in recent times but we focus the eyes of our hearts on this good news: “on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” Jesus teaches us to live out the greatest commandment by his example and he is there to catch us when we fall. Text: Matthew 5:1-20 Now more than ever, the world is in need of seeing our human condition through the lens of faith. Jesus taught us, through the beatitudes, not only how deeply blessed we are but what God is continuing to bring about in this world as we walk with him day by day. In Jesus’ incredible sermon on the mount, the world is turned not upside-down but “right side-up” as we learn to view all things through the lens of faith.

Text: John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 Fifty days after Easter, we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Crossing all boundaries that would separate us, the Spirit brings the wideness of God’s mercy to places we least expect it—to a crowd of strangers of different lands and tongues, to dry bones, to our weak hearts. Jesus promises his disciples that they will be accompanied by the Holy Spirit, and that this Spirit reveals the truth. We celebrate that we too have been visited with this same Spirit. Guided by the truth, we join together in worship, and then disperse to share the fullness of Christ’s love with the world.

Text: John 17:6-19 The gospel for Easter’s seventh Sunday is always taken from the long prayer Jesus prays for his followers in John’s gospel on the night before his death, and always includes Jesus’ desire that his followers will be one as he and the Father are one. This oneness is not mere doctrinal agreement or institutional unity, but mutual abiding, interpenetrating life, mutual love, and joy. This oneness is the work of the Spirit whom we have received but also await. Come, Holy Spirit!

Text: John 15:9-17 This Sunday’s image of the life the risen Christ shares with us is the image of friendship. We are called to serve others as Jesus came to serve; but for John’s gospel, the image of servanthood is too hierarchical, too distant, to capture the essence of life with Christ. Friendship captures the love, the joy, the deep mutuality of the relationship into which Christ invites us. The Greeks believed that true friends are willing to die for each other. This is the mutual love of Christian community commanded by Christ and enabled by the Spirit.

Text: John 15:1-8 This Sunday’s image of how the risen Christ shares his life with us is the image of the vine. Christ the vine and we the branches are alive in each other, in the mystery of mutual abiding described in the gospel and the first letter of John. Baptism makes us a part of Christ’s living and life-giving self and makes us alive with Christ’s life. As the vine brings food to the branches, Christ feeds us at his table. We are sent out to bear fruit for the life of the world.

Text: Psalm 23, John 10:11-18 - The image of the good shepherd shows us how the risen Christ brings us to life. It is the relation ship between the shepherd and the sheep, one of mutual knowledge and love, that gives the shepherd authority. The shepherd's willingness to lay down his life for the sheep shows his love. John Illustrates what it means to lay down our lives for one another by the example of sharing our wealth with any sibling in need.

The Easter season is a week of weeks, seven Sundays when we play in the mystery of Christ’s presence, mostly through the glorious Gospel of John. Today we gather with the disciples on the first Easter, and Jesus breathes the Spirit on us. With Thomas we ask for a sign, and Jesus offers us his wounded self in the broken bread. From frightened individuals we are transformed into a community of open doors, peace, forgiveness, and material sharing such that no one among us is in need.

Since ancient times Ash Wednesday is a time for reflection and humble repentance - a reminder that we are all sinners, death is real and the Resurrection Day is coming. All are welcome to let the Lord use the ashes of your past to create in you a clean heart and a new life in him.
Text: Hebrews 10:24-26. Faithfulness in the small acts of building community can lead us to the habits that are life-giving and life-affirming. The author of Hebrews urges us to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” and reminds us not to give up meeting together so that we don’t miss out on the opportunity to encourage each other through all of life’s difficulties. Our faithful acts of building community lead the kind of life-enriching experiences that God wants for us.

The Apostle Paul teaches us that, without love, our communication may only amount to a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. The term we hear so often in church, benediction, literally means “good words.” May our communication with others leave a blessing behind that lingers far beyond our interactions.
