WTF Crypto?? with Pavel

Pavel is back to talk about crypto! Why is everything so cheap right now? What’s around the corner? Is he still trading? And what the hell is a privacy coin? Plus, we talk about his new apartment and his workout routine because, hey, why not?

NOTE: This episode was recorded on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Any outdated information is to be expected given the volatility of crypto markets. Speaking of crypto markets, none of this is financial advice. If you follow it like it's advice and not simply commentary, you will probably lose money. Consult a professional financial advisor, for crying out loud.

Truth, Beauty, and Goodness with Jack Mason (née The Perfume Nationalist)

In this episode, continuing my series of interviews with instructors from Thad Russell's education programs, I'm speaking with Jack Mason, who taught The War on Beauty in the 21st Century.

You know Jack from his podcast The Perfume Nationalist, his appearances on Unregistered with Thad Russell, and his previous appearance on Blackbird. Contrary to popular belief, he's never been on Red Scare, which I've still never listened to.

In this chat, we're covering topics such as these:

  • Gay culture
  • Fragrance
  • Puritanism from the neoliberal left
  • The War on Beauty
  • Why Jack is right about everything

BB88: Getting Right with Daniel McCarthy

I wanted to do a series with some of the most interesting presenters in Thad Russell's online education program. In this episode, I'm speaking with Dan McCarthy, who taught the course on Conservatism. You know Dan from his many appearances on the Tom Woods Show and other podcasts we love. He's the editor of the conservative quarterly journal, Modern Age, a writer, and a brilliant historian of American politics.

In this chat, we're covering topics such as these:

  • The definition of conservatism, and how it differs from right-wingism
  • An overview of some of the thinkers who shaped modern conservatism
  • Why Dan would consider himself a Hamiltonian as opposed to a Jeffersonian if he had been a founding father
  • Why Dan is skeptical of the "national divorce" narrative

BB87: A Stoic Approach with Jonathan Church

I'm traveling the next few weeks, so the Sunday Stream is pre-recorded. For this week's episode I chatted with economist, author, cancer survivor, cultural commentator, and practitioner of Stoicism, Jonathan Church.

We hit on the following topics:

  • The current state of the economy and particularly inflation (Trigger warning: He's not an Austrian economist and gives some ritually impure answers. I don't push back. You've been warned.)
  • How to deal with adversity, even our own mortality, calmly and rationally
  • How Stoicism can solve the racial and cultural divisions we see today.

I usually avoid current events on Blackbird. But with the US government's media back in the business of selling foreign intervention and, possibly, war, I wanted to get my folks a quick crash course on what's happening. So today I'm interviewing the great libertarian foreign policy commentator Kyle Anzalone to fill us in on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the precipitating causes, and why pre-sundown Joe Biden is in large part responsible for it. (Obviously, in the week-and-a-half since we recorded this, events have progressed in a different direction. Scroll down to learn how you can watch the show live!)

Thinking Right with Sam Jacobs

Sam Jacobs entered my radar when he appeared on Free Man Beyond the Wall The Pete Quinones Show recently. His takes are unconventional and refreshing. A historian, philosopher, an cultural commentator from the non-libertarian right, he provides a perspective that I and many of you never really get. You’re not going to agree with him on everything (Who’s against secession at this point??), but you’re going to learn and, more importantly, become a better thinker having heard from him.

Going Trad with Popular Liberty

Andrew (aka Popular Liberty) returns to the show to talk more about his political framework and why he thinks it’s the best path to liberty. Of course, he’s talked about that on every podcast this side of the Tom Woods show, so I wanted to dig a little deeper into his cultural and even religious views. We chat about the importance of tradition and traditionalism, cultural mores, etc.

Going Deep With Adam Patrick

I recently appeared on Yer Talkin’ Over Me with Adam Patrick. As is always the case when I talk with Adam, I was challenged and enriched by this conversation. You’re going to love it. Jose and I Take Biblical Anarchy by Storm

Hello there! I’m uploading a couple of appearances on other podcasts this week before I get back into the swing of things with interviews next week. First, here’s my appearance on Daniel 3: Biblical Anarchy. Jose and I joined Jacob to talk about our political journeys, our podcasting journeys, and a little about our spiritual journeys.

I’ve always said, “It’s our enemy the state, not our enemy the left!” This is the one where I kind of reverse that position, at least for now.

I hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

  1. Heh. (Solo Episode)

Solo episode coming atcha! It’s a relatively short episode. I’m taking a few weeks off podcasting to work on a few side projects I’ve got going on, including my own web development business and a great clearinghouse for freedom-oriented businesses called Liberty Creators. I’ll be sure to promote them both heavily when they’re ready for primetime.

I also talk about my travels to Austin for Renegade University Weekend and to Orlando for Tom Woods’s 2000th episode event. There’s some meandering stuff about kindness vs. niceness, a step in my ideological journey (see book recommendation below), and mass hypnosis (see article link below) and why I think there’s reason for optimism on the healthcare state.

Finally, I’m going to be posting to Odysee from now on. I don’t know if or how I’ll use my YouTube channel going forward, but if you’re listening to this on YouTube, please go to my Odysee feed for future updates.

Praying Silently with Rich Lewis

As we transition from a material age to a more esoteric, spiritual age, ancient practices are being dug up and revived. Today’s guest, Rich Lewis, is a practitioner of centering prayer, also known as contemplative prayer or silent prayer, which has been practiced by monks for millennia. It’s not entirely dissimilar to certain types of Buddhist meditation. In this conversation, we talk about the what, how, and why of centering prayer.

The Scourge of Bullsh!t Jobs with Adam Winfield

I’ve had lots of jobs, most of which had words like “consultant” and “coordinator” and “specialist” in the title. Was I actually doing anything useful, or was I just taking up space — another paper-pusher, trading my hours for my employer’s dollars without much concern for actual production or productivity? I like to hope at least some of my jobs were legitimate, productive, and adding to the economy somehow. After all, I’ve supported the efforts of hair stylists, retail salespeople, auto mechanics, and hospitality workers. But was I really…producing? It’s very possible I’ve spent my entire adult life in what today’s guest calls b**t jobs. Let’s dig into it.

Author and musician Jimi Fritz has spent decades writing about psychedelics and rave culture. I wanted to get his perspective on “smart drugs” and “dumb drugs”, what it means to be an ethical drug dealer, the origins of rave culture, and why he hates God so much. He also gives me a step-by-step on how to plot out a great first trip.

If you’re like me and curious about psychedelics and the culture that surrounds them, you’ll love this one.

Listen now | A Conversation with Marc Clair I know “A Conversation with…” is pretty much the most boring episode title ever, but I promise this isn’t a boring episode. You know Marc Clair as sort of the OG libertarian podcaster. We get deep into why personally identifying as “libertarian” is kinda cringe, comic books (I’ve never read one, and he has a whole podcast about them), politics and politicians, and the Holy Trinity of podcasters. You’ll love it.

Your Questions Answered with James Jenneman

I had an interview fall through, so you’re getting a solo episode! I could’ve asked one of my pinch hitter buddies to fill in, but I want to get better at talking into a microphone without someone on the other end. My intrepid editor, Chris at Podsworth Media, cut the episode from about 50 minutes to about 40 just by removing “ums” and awkward pauses, so I have a little work to do. But you can’t grow a muscle if you don’t work it out, right?

If you like this episode and would like to hear my thoughts on stuff from time to time, let me know. And send me your questions! You can email me by replying to the email you receive as a subscriber to my Substack, or you can ping me on Twitter.

Loving Yourself with Sarah Thompson

I’ve been running around in the same circles as Sarah Thompson for years. We’re both members of the Tom Woods Elite (which you should also join). But we haven’t really interacted much. A while back I asked a few of my social networks what advice they’d give a 24-year-old young adult if he was eager to lower his time preference, get motivated to live a productive life, and succeed. You can imagine what most people said. Sarah’s advice was unique, though: Love yourself.

I had to talk to her. This is our conversation!

Political Realism with Popular Liberty

A few weeks ago I gave you a little homework assignment: Become passingly familiar with the Archotropism framework developed by Andrew from the YouTube channel Popular Liberty. Read this if you haven’t already. It’ll help you better understand what we’re talking about here.

Poppy Libs has appeared on a ton of podcasts laying out his framework, which is always evolving and being added to. You’d do well to listen to his appearances on Pete Q’s show to get a full run-down. They’re linked below.

As is my practice, I tried to dig in a little deeper than his standard fare. This is extreme libertarian nerdery. There’s one more of those coming up, and then we’re going to be switching gears into personal development, wellness, and entrepreneurship for a few episodes.

Resisting the Murder Cult with Shane Hazel

Shane Hazel hosts Radical podcast and he’s a Marine veteran. But he’s best known as the spoiler of the Georgia Senate race. Yep, he’s the reason Kamala’s breaking ties right now. You’re welcome.

I wanted to talk to Shane about his “Murder Cult” conception of the state. Debunking Conspiracy Theories with Keith Knight

Keith Knight hosts the delightfully nerdy show Don’t Tread on Anyone. He’s always a joy to listen to, and, as I’ve come to find out, a joy to talk with! He recently did a video “debunking” a bunch of real conspiracy theories. Big surprise, the conspiracy theories he debunks are commonly-accepted conventional wisdom. If you think the Branch Davidians at Waco committed mass suicide, the US government considers Al Qaeda its enemy, “Net Neutrality” would make the internet more equitable, or Donald Trump had a quid pro quo relationship with Ukraine, or any number of other crazy beliefs, prepare to be debunked!

Biblical Anarchy and Libertarian Nerdery with Jacob Winograd

Jacob and I hung out in Pittsburgh recently and had pretty good conversations. He’s the host of a podcast called Daniel 3: Biblical Anarchy, so naturally I wanted to hear all about his faith and political beliefs and how they play together. We also get into some pretty hardcore first principles libertarian rights theory stuff and, my current favorite subject following my conversation with David Gornoski, scapegoating. Mostly we’re just new friends getting to know each other better. I look forward to our future conversations.

You’ll notice my half of the interview was a little echoey. I neglected to switch over from the internal laptop mic to my external podcasting mic. I’ll wear sackcloth and ashes as penance. (Also, thanks to Chris and team at Podsworth Media for making it sound WAY better than the original, which paid subscribers were privy to, but you, oh freeloader, are not. Fix that here.)

Creating Liberty with Matt Erickson and LB Muñiz

You remember LB’s recent appearance on the show, right? We talked a little bit about Matt Erickson’s appearance on Liberty Lockdown. In case you missed it, here’s a recap: Matt, critical of political solutions to problems libertarians focus on, said something along the lines of, if you hate taxes, what you really hate is not having as much money as you otherwise could have. So the solution isn’t to shout “Taxation is theft” into the void. It’s to make enough money that taxes are irrelevant. I think that’s a fair summary.

LB kinda liked that take. I kinda didn’t. Matt thought we should expand on it. After a really fruitful internal discussion on Twitter, we decided to take it public. What you’re about to hear is the result. It’s an awesome conversation, and I eagerly look forward to collaborating with these two again very soon.

I think this is the most important thing in the whole episode, and it’s really simple: Liberty isn’t something you ask for. It’s something you create.

Taking the Tech Pill with CPUGOD

Andrew Grathwohl, aka CPUGOD, is a musician and software engineer in NYC. I first heard him on Robbie Bernstein’s show talking about the fascistic relationship between big tech and the state. I wanted to dig in on the Qanon psy-op and how the government uses divisive propaganda on both sides of the cultural and political divide to prey on the gullible. But then I found out CPUGOD’s talents and interests go much deeper and broader than all that! He’s created software to provide accompaniment to talented musicians to make pretty chaotic, avant-garde music. There’s a clip of one of his pieces after the interview.

CPUGOD is also extremely optimistic about the future. That refreshing take is entirely powered by software. According to CPUGOD, blockchain and other decentralized technology is going to make the oligarchy essentially irrelevant to anyone who wants it to be. Paired with entrepreneurial activity and investment, these technologies can bring about the freedom we seek without even needing to dissolve the mechanisms of control that others think they need.

Reading History with CJ Killmer

CJ Killmer is a history professor and the host of the best history podcast in our space. People refer to journalism as the first draft of history. We all know the history books are generally pretty unreliable. Historians (like journalists) come at their craft with all their biases, angles, agendas, ideologies, and ingrained beliefs. CJ is great at reading through these blinders. He’s also great at reading history without the blinders that come with being an ideological libertarian in the lineage of Rothbard. And that’s a unique quality in this space. I wanted to learn about his techniques for discerning reality from spin both in reading in history and in reading journalism.

Mimetic Jiu Jitsu with David Gornoski

David Gornoski is a Christian. But he’s not one of those Christians. Heavily influenced by René Girard’s mimetic theory, he comes at Christianity from the angle of anthropology. Why do humans seem to have an innate need to create scapegoats and monsters? How is that habit overcome? And why in the world is David’s great podcast, A Neighbor’s Choice, also on the old school radio using old school radio styling?

LB Muñiz is the host and author of one of my favorite Substacks, Been Awake for Better Sensemaking, and one of my favorite guests on this show. He’s brainy and eloquent and not possessed by dogma. That always makes for a really good conversation. In this chat, we discuss some libertarian strategy drama, the benefits and limitations of wealth, power, and influence, and intersectionality.

If you’re up for a little pre-work, LB wrote a two-part series on intersectionality last fall that inspired part of this conversation: Part 1 | Part 2

Wealth, power, and influence come in a lot of different forms. If you’re interested in making a lot of money, Ramit Sethi’s unfortunately-titled “I Will Teach You To Be Rich” is a great place to start. It’s one Audible credit, and if you’re not an Audible subscriber you can get it for free. (Of course that’s an affiliate link.)

Diving Deep with James Reilly

James Reilly and I have been online friends for years and years. He’s the closest thing to a bona fide libertarian theorist I can think of who isn’t a PhD economist. He’s just a regular dude. Well, not regular per se. He teaches historical fencing (that’s fencing with big swords, not the little sticks little prissy fencers use). He’s a musician. His daughter is a published graphic novelist. He’s just super-interesting. And we have great conversations. Since we hadn’t had a great conversation since I started a podcast, I asked him to have one and let me record it. This is the result. Enjoy!

I’ll warn you, we get super deep into libertarian theory wonkery. If that’s not your thing, try skipping to the next section.

James doesn’t have a whole lot of social media presence, but here’s a video of him playing flute.

Stop Being Dumb

Conradding with Conrad (Brought to you by Conrad)

Conrad is part of this growing phenomenon that seems to simultaneously reject and embrace everything. It’s sort of what happens when Integral Theory meets integrated life. I think he and the people on his path are on the forefront of what will end up being the post-postmodern era. They’re magical, mystical, psychedelic, hyper-tolerant (even of themselves, which is always hard), and they crush dogma. You’re going to love this talk, and you need to go subscribe to Conrad right now.

Mike Brancatelli Opens Your Mind

This is a Very Special Episode. I sometimes feel like I’m way too cerebral to have a truly spiritual experience. So I’ve been fascinated by psychedelics for years. Psychedelics can offer a kind of “shortcut” to spirituality. Of course, I’ve also heard pretty negative things about using a shortcut to get to the end. Jung warned against “unearned wisdom”. Jordan Peterson, who I respect, echoes him. Many people believe the spiritual experiences psychedelic open us up for are actually demonic. Alex Jones (and many others) believe the “demons” are aliens. I’m not opposed to any of these positions, even the aliens.

According to Vin Armani and Pete Quiñones we’re entering a new “age of magic”. Astrologers say we’ve entered the Age of Aquarius. Integralists say we’re entering a post-postmodern age of oneness, a sort of collective enlightenment. The USG is teasing alien sightings. The Great Reset is underway. Conspiracy theory is hyper-ascendant. I call it the post-reason age. We’re replacing knowledge with belief, logic with rhetoric. For someone who’s “too cerebral”, it might be necessary to take a shortcut in order to survive the coming decade.

I asked Mike Brancatelli of the Mikeadelic podcast to sit and talk about psychedelic fundamentals, my questions and concerns, and his experiences. Since I had absolutely no idea even what questions to ask, I invited Landry Harmon, the first ever guest on this show, to join in the chat. Landry had some technical issues toward the end, so forgive any weirdness.

Pavel Trades on Why I’m All of a Sudden Broke

Pavel is back! We’ve been in a bit of a crypto market slump lately (I’m not actually broke per se. I’m still in the green, but man…it’s been a painful month), so I wanted to find out what he thinks is up with that. Check it out!

Since this deals with a pretty time-sensitive topic, I’ll let you know we recorded late in the morning on Monday, June 14. Since you’re in the future, things might have changed since then. Can Teslas fly yet?

Politics, Power, and Wings with Buck Johnson

You know Buck Johnson as host and humble narrator of the great Counterflow podcast. I’ve been fascinated by different takes on left- and right-wing worldviews. I still haven’t formed a firm opinion on the issue, but Buck definitely puts some meat on the bones. Buck thinks freedom-lovers should just give up the façade and happily identify as right-wing. I’m less keen on that, mostly because I land firmly on the left in the Malice test. (The Malice test asks, “Are some people better than others?” Right-wingers say “Yes”. Left-wingers give a speech.) Obviously, I’m not the kind of interviewer who has any interest in debating his guests, so my goal here was to dig in with Buck to learn to see, not to convince him to see like me. I think we did a pretty good job digging together.

Buck is also going to be providing the venue for RU Texas, coming up in October, so be sure to sign up.

LB Muniz is the best of the best when it comes to the new guard of libertarian podcasters. He hosts the Been Awake Podcast for Better Sensemaking and publishes frequent written content. Thinking Integrally with Corey DeVos

As you know, I’ve been quite taken with the philosophy of Ken Wilber, known as Integral Theory, lately. I interviewed Bryan O’Doherty in Blackbird Ep. 8. Bryan, who is also libertarian, was able to give us a good overview of Integral Theory, along with his political framework of panarchy.

Today I’m happy to introduce you to Corey DeVos. Corey is a leader in the Integral community. He hosts the “Everyone is Right” podcast, and he runs Integral Life, Ken Wilber’s website. This is an educational and insightful conversation. Plus, I promise you won’t hear this many references to a podcast host’s genitals on any other show.

How States Foment Mass Hysteria with Philipp Bagus

Ever since reading The Crucible in tenth grade, I have always been quite interested in the phenomenon of mass hysteria. I almost started a podcast on the subject, chronicling history’s hysterias. As it turns out, I’m not much of a hystorian (though I do secretly hope someone steals the idea).

Cooking Right With Dann Reid

Years ago I thought it would be a good idea to start a libertarian food blog. I love cooking and eating great food, and I love liberty, so it seemed like a great fit! As it turned out, I didn’t know where to start. Thankfully, today’s guest did. Dann Reid is a chef, baker, blogger, and podcaster who is as good a political and social commentator as he is a culinary artist. Dann’s podcast Culinary Libertarian is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of these two worlds.

In this episode we answer some of the food world’s most pressing questions:

Is a hot dog a sandwich?

Is there any reason to buy salted butter?

Why is Bill Gates buying up all the farmland?

Integrating With Bryan O’Doherty

I recently asked in the group of a popular proponent of postmodernism (you can guess who) what they thought would would come next. What is post-postmodernism?

The best answer was Integral Theory. This “theory of everything” creates a framework by which civilizations throughout history have evolved. Each link in the evolution is a “holon”, a whole unto itself that’s also part of a greater whole (the same way sentences are holons that make up a book, which is a holon that is a component of a library).

Postmodernism is the holistic sum of every culture we as a species have developed up to now. Obviously, many individuals haven’t ascended to seeing the world like a postmodernist. Many aren’t even in the hyper-rational modernist worldview yet. But some have moved beyond postmodernism and into the new integral age. That’s what this conversation is about.

We also touch on what Bryan believes is the most logical political framework for an integral world, panarchism. This political framework advocates for competing models of governance based on individual and group needs and not based on power and violence.

If you have been following the show for a while and listened to Vin Armani’s series The Ascendant Project, you’ll notice a lot of parallels. One difference, though, is that the Integral model is very western and linear, where Vin’s model (via PR Sarkar) is cyclical. More than likely (and I think both models recognize this), cultural evolution is more of a spiral or wave pattern with loops and cycles and undulations as we all progress together.

This is a long episode. I considered breaking it into two parts. But in keeping with the theme of integration, I thought splitting it up would be a little too jarring. Plus, if you’re as fascinated by this stuff as I am, it’ll go by really fast.

One thing, though: Integral has a lot of jargon, including a color code. Going through these colors takes up a large portion of this interview. To make matters a bit more complicated, Integral branched off Spiral Dynamics, which had its own color code. The “map” I used as a cheat sheet throughout this interview can be found here. It’s also pasted below if you’re listening to this on Substack, but it’s going to be a tiny image, so you should probably just click the link.

Lily Forester is stitching her life together

I’m thrilled to bring you this interview, which was recorded almost a month ago before current events somehow became more urgent to talk about than an individual life story. I apologize for that. I can’t promise I won’t do it again. In any case, I love this story. Lily Forester first came into my field of vision when her husband (boyfriend, partner, whatever) was murdered over…drugs? …territory? …just being in the wrong place at the wrong time? It was the first time I’d heard of a real life agorist. It was the first time I’d heard of violence impacting people in my libertarian bubble.

Since the murder, Lily has done her damnedest to be successful and successfully self-reliant. Her story is inspiring, exciting, and enlightening. I really think you’ll like it.

Derrick Broze on The Greater Reset Activation

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard about The Great Reset. Next week the Masters of the Universe will converge upon Davos, Switzerland, to plot out the next decade of techno-fascism. I don’t know if there’s much you and I can do to stop it, but I do know we can arrange our lives to make ourselves immune to it. Regular folks are being distracted by propaganda about the pandemic, domestic terrorism, and a phantom post-inauguration Trump resurgence. Whatever keeps the focus off reality, right?

Well, reality is still happening and Derrick Broze is here to help us navigate it. Please listen to this short interview and then go sign up for The Greater Reset. I promise, there’s nothing more important in your life right now.

Pete Quiñones on a multifaceted approach to politics and culture

Pete Quiñones returns to the show to talk about his return to allegiance with the Libertarian Party (specifically the LP Mises Caucus). We talk about art of political power and why radical individualism necessary but insufficient.

This is a political episode, and there’s lots of inside baseball. So I’ll forgive you if you skip it.

But I won’t forgive you if you don’t attend The Greater Reset. This very important event, being held as a counter to the World Economic Forum’s meeting in Davos the week of January 25, provides a great jumping-off point for resisting the planned global technocracy. Monica Perez on Discerning Propaganda

I’m so excited to chat with Monica Perez today. The host of The Propaganda Report podcast, Monica has an uncanny knack for sussing out narrative and spin in news reporting. She can connect almost every news story to some higher-level agenda. Don’t get it twisted, though. She’s not your standard conspiracy theorist, though. She thinks Alex Jones is a limited hangout and Q is a psy-op. She has no time for the theatrics that so often comes along with conspiracy theory, and that’s what makes her so refreshing.

Great episode for you today! If you're interested in making money in crypto, trading is an exciting, risky, potentially lucrative way to do it. In this episode, I chat with Pavel, a full-time crypto trader. We talk about his experience and what has worked and not worked for him. Obviously, neither one of us is a finance professional (at the end of the episode we compare our terrible performance in college finance classes), so don't take this as advice. It's not advice. Go talk to your financial advisor!
