Everyone's terrified of Required Minimum Distributions — but for most retirees, the fear is way overblown. In this video, I break down real RMD numbers on $2M and $5M portfolios, show you the actual tax impact using 2026 brackets, and reveal the one RMD mistake that actually costs people money. In this video: What RMDs actually are (and why the government requires them starting at 73) * Real RMD dollar amounts and withdrawal rates on a $2M portfolio at ages 73, 77, and 85 * The same breakdown for a $5M portfolio * Why your marginal* tax bracket matters more than the total RMD dollar amount * How the standard deduction and 2026 tax law changes affect what you actually pay * The one RMD risk that's actually worth worrying about — and the penalty for missing it

If you're within 10 years of retirement or already retired with $1M+ saved, we help clients build a withdrawal plan that satisfies RMDs automatically — no guesswork, no missed deadlines. In this episode, we talk about one of the most overlooked retirement risks: the loss of purpose. Many people spend decades building a career, a routine, and a sense of meaning through work.

Then retirement arrives, and what looked like freedom starts to feel strangely empty. We cover why this happens, why financial security alone is not enough, and how to think about purpose, rhythm, contribution, and meaning in retirement. If you are asking questions like: What will I do after I retire? How do I find purpose in retirement?

Why do some retirees feel lost even when they have enough money? How do I prepare emotionally and practically for retirement? This episode will help. Subscribe for more conversations on retirement planning, retirement income, and building a life that works both financially and personally.

How much net worth do you actually need to be considered middle class, upper-middle class, affluent, or rich in retirement? In this video, Eric Schrum, CFP® professional and owner of Schrum Private Wealth Management, breaks down the net worth ranges for Americans age 65 and older, including the median retiree net worth, the top 10 percent, and the top 1 percent. More importantly, Eric explains why your net worth percentile may have very little to do with whether your retirement is actually secure. You will learn:* The net worth of the bottom 25 percent of retirement-age Americans * The median net worth for Americans age 65 and older * What it takes to be considered upper-middle class in retirement * The net worth required to enter the top 10 percent * The approximate threshold for the top 1 percent * Why home equity can make net worth figures misleading * Why spending, income, taxes, and lifestyle matter more than comparison * The questions retirees should be asking instead of, “Am I rich enough?”

A retiree with a larger net worth is not always in a stronger financial position. Retirement security depends on how much income you receive, how much you spend, where your assets are held, how much debt you carry, and whether your financial plan can support the life you want to live. At Schrum Private Wealth Management, we help pre-retirees and retirees manage their investments, retirement income, spending, and tax strategy so they can live the lifestyle they feel called to live without constantly worrying about running out of money. 📅 Work with Eric

We're back with Part 2 of the CFP® Investment Rankings series. This time, Eric Schrum grades individual stock picking, diversified stock portfolios, Universal Life Insurance, alternative investments (hedge funds, private equity, VC), and gold — including a warning about the predatory gold companies specifically targeting retirees.

Missed Part 1? Watch it here: https://youtu.be/1--a3FNe9NQ — we covered Mutual Funds, ETFs, Variable Annuities, and Life Insurance.

As always, these are general rankings. Your situation is unique. But this gives you a smart framework for evaluating what you're being offered in retirement.

🔑 Key Takeaways

  • Individual stock picking is closer to a coin flip than a skill — most investors learn this the hard way
  • A strategically diversified portfolio of individual stocks is a different story — but requires real expertise to execute well
  • Universal Life Insurance has the same core problem as Whole Life: mixing insurance and investing rarely benefits the buyer
  • Alternative investments can be excellent for non-correlated exposure and strong returns — but you must be an accredited investor and vet the fund carefully
  • Gold can serve as a legitimate hedge — but predatory gold companies specifically target retirees using fear tactics to get into your IRA and 401(k)
  • Know what you're buying, what a reasonable allocation looks like, and who is selling it to you before committing

Are the investments you're being pitched actually good for YOU — or good for the person selling them? CFP® Eric Schrum cuts through the noise and gives honest, no-nonsense grades on 5 investments retirees commonly encounter: Mutual Funds, Variable Annuities, ETFs, Whole Life Insurance, and Term Life Insurance.

This is Part 1 of an ongoing series. Every retiree's situation is unique, but this gives you a strong foundation for evaluating what you're being offered — and what to watch out

🔑 Key Takeaways

• Always check the fee share class on mutual funds — lower fees matter more than most people realize

• Variable annuities are often loaded with hidden fees, surrender penalties, and long lock-up periods — approach with caution

• ETFs offer low costs, tax efficiency, and broad options for both passive and active investors

• Mixing life insurance and investing (whole life) typically benefits the seller more than the buyer

• If you need life insurance, level-term is almost always the cleaner, more cost-effective choice

• Retirees should ask whether they still need life insurance at all — or if savings can serve as self-insurance

⚠️ Miss this IRS deadline and you could owe a 25% penalty on your own retirement money. In this video, CFP® Eric Schrum breaks down exactly what Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) are, when they kick in, how much they could cost you if you ignore them — and the strategies you can use right now to take control before the IRS does.

Whether you're approaching retirement or already in it, this is one of the most important retirement planning concepts you need to understand.

🔑 Key Takeaways

  • RMDs begin at age 73 (age 75 if born in 1960 or later) from traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, and other tax-deferred accounts
  • Missing your RMD triggers a 25% IRS penalty (reduced to 10% if corrected within 2 years)
  • Roth IRAs and taxable brokerage accounts are NOT subject to RMDs
  • Taking your first RMD in the year you turn 73 avoids a double-RMD year
  • Roth conversions, QCDs, and IRMAA management are powerful strategies to reduce your RMD burden
  • QCDs allow up to $111,000/year per person in charitable gifts directly from your IRA — tax-free and RMD-satisfying

In this episode, I break down exactly what IRMAA is, why it catches so many high-income retirees completely off guard, and — most importantly — four strategies you can use right now to reduce or eliminate it before you retire.

Are you actually ready to retire, or are you just chasing a number that may not even fit your life?

One of the biggest mistakes people make when planning for retirement is fixating on an arbitrary portfolio goal like $1 million, $2 million, or more, without ever asking a better question: How much do I actually need to live the life I want in retirement?

In this video, I walk through a more practical way to think about retirement readiness by starting with your income needs, not a random investment target. Once you know how much income you’ll need each year, you can begin backing into what your portfolio actually needs to produce and whether you may already be closer to retirement than you think.

I also cover a few major retirement planning mistakes people often miss, including taxes, inflation, and expenses that may fall away later like a mortgage payment.

If you want more clarity around whether you have enough to retire, this video will help you think about it the right way.

In this episode, we cover:

• What matters most to markets when Iran escalates

• How much of this year’s volatility is tied to Iran versus normal market forces

We work best with households that have $1M+ invested and are within 10 years of retirement.

Most people think retirement risk is about money.

They think about market crashes, inflation, taxes, healthcare costs, and whether their nest egg will last. But there is another risk that often hits just as hard, and almost nobody talks about it early enough.

In this episode, we explore the hidden retirement risk of losing purpose after work ends.

For many people, retirement does not just remove a paycheck. It removes structure, identity, momentum, and a sense of being needed. That can leave even financially secure retirees feeling restless, flat, bored, or unsure of who they are without their career.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why having enough money does not guarantee a fulfilling retirement
  • The connection between work, identity, and meaning
  • Why so many retirees struggle with boredom, aimlessness, and loss of direction
  • The difference between retiring from work and retiring to something meaningful
  • Practical ways to build purpose, rhythm, contribution, and connection in retirement

If you are planning for retirement, nearing retirement, or already retired and wondering what this next season is really supposed to look like, this episode is for you.

A successful retirement is not just about financial independence. It is about building a life with purpose, meaning, and direction.

We work best with households that have $1M+ invested and are within 10 years of retirement.

If you’re approaching retirement with $1M–$5M invested, the biggest risk isn’t the market… It’s how you take income from your portfolio.

Most people spend decades learning how to grow their investments- but almost no one teaches you how to live off them.

In this video, I walk through how to turn a $2 million portfolio into a reliable retirement paycheck- without running out of money and being forced to sell investments at the wrong time.

We cover:
• Why retirement is a distribution problem, not an investment problem
• The biggest mistake people make with the “4% rule.”
• How sequence of returns risk can quietly derail your plan
• Why the first 5–7 years of retirement matter most

If you’re 50–65 and within 10 years of retirement, this is the phase where small mistakes have permanent consequences.

Hello! And welcome to this week’s episode of the Christian Retirement Show. Today we are continuing our series on the hidden Retirement Killers lurking just under the surface for people who are retired or are preparing for retirement and how to beat them! This week we’re talking about the biggest fear I hear from retirement savers which is longevity risk!

On today’s show we cover what longevity risk is, it’s causes, and how to overcome longevity risk so you can have a successful retirement!

Causes:

Over-spending- If your lifestyle over reaches your resources you are going to have a rough time in retirement. You may start depleting your savings & investments quickly or it may be a slow burn, but one way or another spending too much will be disastrous for your retirement plans.

Investment performance- Most retirees rely on investments to fund their retirement goals. In simple terms- inflation and the cost of living just can’t usually be funded using savings in a checking account. If investment returns during your retirement do not reach certain benchmarks- whether from poor investment decisions or poor overall market performance. This can seriously jeopardize your retirement success and be a significant challenge to overcome.

Living longer than expected- As we discuss modern medical advancements and knowledge on how to take care of our bodies has led to quickly increasing life expectancies and higher quality of life. This means that you not only have a greater chance of living longer but also have living a high-quality lifestyle as well. Now while this is great news and the alternative is not great, this can be a cause of serious concern and anxiety when retirees must face the reality of funding a retirement that is much longer than they ever thought possible.

Retirement Solutions:

Budget realistic expectations of retirement spending prior to your retirement date- What this allows you to do is head into retirement with your eyes wide open as to how much you need to live your desired lifestyle and if the resources at your disposable can fund that lifestyle. A great way to do this is by looking at your current level of spending and using that is a gauge for how much you will likely spend once retired.

Have a quality investment plan in place- that is built to withstand ups and downs in the market. This means being well diversified and not taking more risk than you are a) comfortable taking and b) should take in order to not jeopardize your retirement savings.

Build a retirement plan- What a retirement plan allows you to do is take all of your lifestyle needs- daily spending, travel, big expenses; all of your resources including retirement savings, pensions, annuities, & social security. And then run calculations to ensure your desired lifestyle can be funded by your resources.

And welcome to this week’s episode of the Christian Retirement Show. Today we are starting our series on The hidden Retirement Killers lurking just under the surface for people who are retired or are preparing for retirement and how to beat them! This means we are going to be spending the next few week’s talking about 1 of 4 different retirement killers, what they are, why they are important and what you can do to combat them. To begin we are going to be talking about one of the biggest retirement killers out there and a risk that not many people know about!

First Hidden Retirement Killer- Sequence of Returns Risk

Sequence of return risk is the risk that you might retire right when the market takes a significant drop, leaving you to start taking income from your retirement savings when your account is significantly lower than its highest value.

To combat this retirement risk there are two great retirement strategies you can employ:

  1. Start lowering the risk you are taking in your retirement investments as your near retirement and just after you retire.
  2. Keep 6 months to 2 years’ worth of living expenses in cash in your retirement savings leaving the rest invested. Welcome to this week’s episode of the Christian Retirement Show! In today’s episode we discuss Biblically responsible investing- What it is, pros & cons, and how we at Schrum Private Wealth Management implement BRI for our clients.

Show Outline:

What is Biblically Responsible Investing?

Biblically responsible investing is the process of investing your money in companies whose business practices align with biblical values. Another way to think of BRI is screening out companies who engage in practices which are contrary to biblical values. Often these values are things such as companies who profit from abortion pharmaceuticals, engage in slavery within their supply chains, profit from pornography, the current gender trends, all the way to possible alcohol, tobacco, and gambling sales.

What are pros & cons of Biblically Responsible Investing?

Pros:

• Christian’s now have an option to align their faith & finances

• Be part of a growing movement with better investment selection

• Enact change in the culture through investing

Cons:

• Higher fees than average

• Mostly Actively Managed Investments

• Can be marketed in a legalistic way.

If you are interested in how you can implement Biblically Responsible Investing in your portfolio, we’d love to help. Visit Christianretirementplanner.com or email me at eric@schrumpw.com

Hello everyone and welcome to this week’s show! For today’s episode I thought we would discuss something that is always on everyone’s mind and also is more light hearted than last week’s episode. Which if you missed I highly recommend going back and listening to because we discussed the tragic situation in Ukraine happening right now and how that might affect your retirement. Plus, in that episode I share 2 strategies you can employ as a retirement saver or retiree to combat volatility and global uncertainty to ensure you are growing but also protecting your money for your future.

7 Best Ways to Save Money in 2022:

  1. Track your expenses not your budget
  2. Put together a plan to pay off debt
  3. Meal plan the week ahead
  4. Put together a savings plan
  5. Cancel unused subscriptions
  6. Don’t shop at brand name stores
  7. Find fun things to do in your hometown that don’t cost a fortune!

I had a blast putting together this list, so please share what you do to save money and enhance your life at the same time!

Welcome to this week’s episode of the Christian Retirement Show! This week we are discussing the conflict between Russia & Ukraine, what this means for your retirement ,and 2 retirement strategies you can implement in times such as these.

Show Outline:

As I type, Russia has continued to escalate the conflict in Ukraine but has been frustrated by the valiant resistance of the Ukrainian military and civilian population. In addition, both Europe and the United States have imposed significant social and economic sanctions.

With all of this in mind, it may seem like a bleak outlook for the U.S. stock market but what we’ve seen is that on average the SP 500 has ben up by over 13% one year after global conflicts and while each conflict is different we don’t foresee this war between Ukraine & Russia have a long-term effect on the U.S. stock market outside of oil/gas prices.

As a retiree this means having a financial plan which can weather the short-term volatility conflicts like this cause is paramount. To help you in your retirement planning there are two retirement strategies I’d like to share with you. 1) Keep 6 months – 2 years of retirement income in cash in your portfolio. 2) Have different investment buckets for different time horizons.

  2. The rule of 55 allows you to withdraw retirement money from your current employers 401k early as long as you retire age 55 or later.

Today I’m talking about Retirement Planning, but not like you’ve ever heard it before.

While we can talk about retirement strategies and retirement income plans until the sun goes down, shouldn’t we first stop to ask ourselves, when is it wise to save for retirement and when do our retirement goals turn into sinful idols?

On today’s episode we are addressing a question I hear often which is, I want to save and invest for retirement, but I know the Bible tells me I should give. Sometimes the Bible even tells people to give everything away! Is saving for retirement sinful or should I feel OK about my desires for a secure financial future?

On this week’s show we discuss one of the craziest financial stories of the year, how an “investor” turned a $8,000 investment into $5.7 billion dollars! We also examine a retirement article from the Motley Fool about Dangerous Retirement Myths. Are the main stream financial media articles about retirement worth paying attention to? We’ll let you know in this week’s episode.

Outline of this episode:

[1:15] Weekly Money Bible Verse [2:00] Dangerous Retirement Myths [2:15] Retirement Myth 1 [3:53] Retirement Myth 2 [5:11] Retirement Myth 3 [6:30] Retirement Myth 4 [9:20] How to turn $8k into $6 billion

In summary, it’s always best to do the extra research or hire a respected financial planner when it comes to your retirement plans so that you do not fall into the trap of relying on inaccurate information that sounds true but will lead you to make costly mistakes with your hard-earned retirement money.

If you missed last week’s Christian Retirement Show all about Social Security, be sure to go back and check that episode out here. In the episode we dive into whether social security is something you can rely on as you plan for retirement despite the fact that the Social Security Administration has projected the social security trust fund to be insolvent within 15 years.

Are you a Christian who is diligently saving for Retirement and stay up at night with that nagging question….”Is Social Security going to be there when I retire?” Or maybe you are a Christian who is already retired and your question is “Wow, I’m taking Social Security right now, is it going to go away?!?

Well today we tackle that very important Social Security question. We look at an article on Market Watch written by Brett Arends which examines the effect Covid has had on the Social Security Trust fund, as well as the health of Social Security overall! Spoiler, it’s not great!

We also hear from some listener reviews and I share some exciting news about the launch of our new website made for listeners of this show and Christian’s who are planning or in retirement. www.christianretirementplanner.com

Outline of this episode:

[1:50] New website announcement [2:33] Listener Reviews [3:30] Social Security Market Watch Article Overview [7:00] Wharton School of Business review on Social Security Running Out [11:50] Authors Opinion on how to fix the Social Security Crisis [13:45] Eric Schrum’s opinion on what will happen to Social Security

To begin, the author outlines the warning from Wharton Professor Olivia Mitchell who warns Social Security could become insolvent by early 2029! This is an accelerated timeline from official Social Security projections which predict social security to run out in 2034, still not an optimistic date.

Olivia Mitchell believes that covid has caused job losses that are lowering the social security tax being payed into the social security trust fund and has caused many workers near retirement to retire early, thus drawing down social security benefits earlier than expected.

The original author Brett Arends then offers his solutions for fixing this crisis including, increasing the social security age (again), lowering the payout retirees receive from social security, as well as having the most wealthy Americans foot the bill for retirees social security.

Fina;ly, Eric offers his opinion and tells retirees in or entering retirement to rest easier than the doomsday picture outlined in the article depicts. Eric believes social security will get picked up by the government and remain a retirement mainstay for the long-term.
