About Constructing Hope
Irvington Covenant Church members saw firsthand the negative effects that gentrification and dwindling housing affordability had on its members, neighbors, and especially the large minority population in North/Northeast Portland. To address these concerns, church members created Irvington Covenant Community Development Corporation (ICCDC) in 1995.
The organization built and sold 11 homes in Northeast Portland, to provide low-to-middle income families with decent housing, plus provide hands-on construction experience for participants in the organization’s Constructing Hope Training Program.As the housing industry changed, ICCDC focused on the Constructing Hope Training Program and targeted people coming from incarceration and people with a legal history, to empower them to get a clean start as productive, self-sufficient members of the community.
In 2007, the program was approved by the Bureau of Labor and Industries as a state-certified pre-apprenticeship program. In 2010, the Constructing Hope Pre-Apprenticeship Program became an independent non-profit organization separate from ICCDC.

Welcome to the latest episode of the N The Numbers Podcast. Today's guest is Dr. Scott Pattison of TERC. Dr. Pattison talks to us about his journey into STEM education and gives us information on his work with Head Start on Engineering in East County with MHCC and others. We discuss the importance of introducing STEM at early ages and its impact on students and families.
Head Start on Engineering (https://www.terc.edu/hse/) is an ongoing partnership between TERC, Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) Head Start, University of Notre Dame Center for STEM Education, and Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). Currently, the program investigates the ways families develop interests related to engineering across contexts and over time. For this phase, the team is using a design-based implementation research approach and integrated longitudinal case studies to refine the HSE program with a larger group of families to serve as an innovative model for other communities around the country.

We talk about the PDX Bridge program and resources available for young people ages 16 - 24 experiencing foster care, homelessness, or adjudication.
PDX Bridge at Mount Hood Community College is a transition program that helps youth find a pathway to college and a career. First-generation, low-income students receive financial assistance and the support of a college success coach as they start taking college classes with a community of peers. Priority is given to youth who have experienced foster care, homelessness, or adjudication. The best part? The program is completely free for its students. About Dr. Liza Finkel Dr. Liza Finkel is an Associate Professor of Education in the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling in the Department of Teacher Education. She is also the Program Director and the Science Content Area Coordinator in the Secondary MAT program. She earned her BS in geology from George Washington University, her MS in geology from the University of Michigan and her PhD in science education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Liza has taught middle and high school science (including classes in Earth science, chemistry, physical science and environmental science) in St. Louis, Missouri and in rural Maine. Her teaching and research focuses on supporting preservice teachers to become social justice educators, and on increasing the participation of students from currently underrepresented groups in STEM majors and teaching. Dr. Finkel's scholarly work includes two co-authored/edited books, Rethinking Science (under contract, due out in fall 2021) and Women's Science: Learning and Succeeding from the Margins (1998), as well as numerous articles and presentations at academic conferences and for professional organizations.
