The podcast explores the current issues people living with HIV experience that impact on their quality of life. The podcast aims to provide educational content and discussions with key leaders in HIV care in the UK, Europe and America. Exploring issues in a conversational solution focused approach will lead to a greater understanding of the needs of people living with HIV and enhance healthcare professional’s ability to provide person centred care. Throughout each episode there will be a specific show theme which will focus on current and topical issues within HIV care, either from a clinical or research perspective. The focus of HIV matters podcast series aims to showcase innovation and best practice within the field of HIV care.

Winnie Ssanyu-Sseruma is an International Development consultant based in London, UK. Her consultancy focuses on health trainings, community research, and program evaluations, supporting organizations addressing social justice, women's leadership, and HIV & AIDS. She currently monitors and assesses community health initiatives across 20 African countries for the Stephen Lewis Foundation in Toronto, Canada.
In the UK, Winnie has worked with organizations like HIV I-Base, Partners in Evaluation, and Christian Aid. In Uganda, her ancestral home, she co-founded the Bridging A Gap Initiative (BAGCI), providing breakfast to nearly 200 vulnerable children each morning for 17 years. In 2022, Winnie co-founded the Mentoring Omwana (Child) Project, helping young people access opportunities and develop skills, especially in computer literacy. She holds a BA in Sociology from Saint Mary University in Leavenworth, Kansas, USA.
Memory Sachikonye
Memory Sachikonye, living with HIV since 2002, coordinates the UK Community Advisory Board (UK-CAB), uniting over 800 advocates from 120 organizations. She works part-time as Admin and Finance Lead at Positively UK, while also serving as a peer mentor and championing women's rights to services and treatment access. Memory is a community representative on the POPPY study, examining outcomes for people with HIV over 50 in England and Ireland. With various roles on HIV study committees, she contributes to trial design and management. Additionally, Memory is a member of the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) and serves on its Development and Membership Advisory Group (DMAG).

Jamie is a Mildred Baxter Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society at The University of Edinburgh. Jamie is working on exploring how sexual fantasies and desires can be harnessed for HIV prevention by engaging with a range of stakeholders.

Within the podcast we explore Silvia’s activism over the 4 decade of HIV and how her strong female leadership has influenced the sector. We explore the importance of peer support and how to support people living with HIV.

Silvia Petretti was born in Rome, Italy. She moved to London in 1987 and graduated in African Arts and Languages at SOAS. Silvia spent her younger years travelling around West Africa and promoting dance and music from Africa and the diaspora in Italy, also working as a writer for documentaries. Since 2019 Silvia has been Positively UK’s CEO, a national charity lead and run by people with HIV. She firstly joined Positively UK in 1999, when Positively UK was still known as Positively Women, as a volunteer in the organisation Community Development Team providing treatment information to women attending HIV clinics. Soon she became a staff member leading on support for women with drug and alcohol issues and providing outreach in Holloway prison. Silvia is the co-author of the SHE+ toolkit (Strong HIV Positive and Empowered), which aimed at supporting women with HIV in Europe to deliver women centred peer support. Silvia is a member of the WHO advisory board on Women and HIV and has worked as part of a team to develop a global toolkit for women with HIV to access their Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. Silvia believes that a key tool in defeating HIV stigma is for people with HIV to be heard, visible and involved in decisions that affect them. Silvia has been living with HIV 26 years

Throughout her career she has developed a passion for education and raising awareness of sexual health, enjoying her role as the FSRH training programme director, as well as regular commitments to teaching other health care professionals and lecturing at conferences. Naomi's media career started with the E4's 'The Sex Clinic’ which “helps young people get their sex lives back on track” and, as well as other media roles, she has talked frankly about vulvas, sex in old age, HIV and other sexual health subjects, on C4’s ‘Steph’s Packed Lunch’. Naomi is proud to be a Trustee for the charity Saving Lives UK and an Ambassador for both the Eve Appeal and the Family Planning Association.

Episode 7 – Getting Older with HIV
On this week's episode, Michelle talks to Winnie Sseruma to discuss a phenomena that no one predicted when the epidemic was at it's highest, getting older with HIV. Medicine has dramatically improved due to research, but has been driven mainly by activists like Winnie. As a person living with HIV, Winnie explores how her life has changed since her diagnosis, and how she has had to adjust her mindset and life whilst getting older.

The aim of the podcast is to explore the role of the Professional Nurse Advocate with regards to workforce wellbeing. The Professional Nurse Advocate (PNA) programme was launched in March 2021 towards the end of the third wave. The ambition by the Chief Nursing Officer is to support the workforce through the implementation of the PNA who can provide restorative supervision. The focus of the podcast is to explore how we approach and manage people who choose to opt out of treatment, otherwise termed as Intentional Non- Adherence. When we are talking about this aspect of care, non-adherence falls into two categories: Intentional and Unintentional. Unintentional non-adherence is when a patient unintentionally struggles to take their tablets due to barriers that are beyond their control, for example forgetfulness or drug and alcohol issues. Intentional non˗adherence is when a patient intentionally decides to stop their treatment. Since the start of the HIV epidemic care has focused on quality of life, in the early days this was in part due to the limited treatment options available for people living with HIV alongside a strong humanistic desire to provide optimum care. Advances in HIV care has led to HIV care having more of a medical focus with national and international targets focusing on the prevention of new infections. Despite advances in medical treatment the impact of being diagnosed and living with the HIV, has a significant impact for many people, across all aspects of their life. Factors that impact on health-related quality of life for people living with HIV are often poorly understood and explored in health care settings. The podcast will explore the current issues people living with HIV experience that impact on their quality of life. The podcast aims to provide educational content and discussions with key leaders in HIV care in the UK, Europe and America. Some of which I have had the pleasure of working with throughout my career. The podcast will be released on a Wednesday for the duration of the series. Each series will contain at least 10 episodes with at least one special edition. Within episode there will be a specific show theme which will focus on current and topical issues within HIV care, either from a clinical or research perspective.
