- The passage speaks of giving tithes, offerings and first-fruits to God. Giving of our time, talents and finances to the work of God is a key part of Christian discipleship. What does it mean for you to use the principle of giving God the best of your time?

- Sabbath is a gift that God gives us to live out His wonderful gospel. Have you been fully receiving the gift of Sabbath and if so what does this look like? If not, what is preventing you from resting?
- Caroline spoke of Sabbath being:
- An act of Resistance and Remembrance - to stop and remember God.
- An act of Rest - to rest our whole selves: physically, mentally and emotionally and spiritually.
- An act of Reconnection - to God, each other and our future hope through worship.

Sabbath was a communal practice. What ways can we as a church be practicing Sabbath together to reset together? (This question would be good to discuss with others).
- Sabbath is an opportunity to experience and show a foretaste of new creation. How often do you think about new creation? What are you most looking forward to? What of our future hope can be experienced in part today?

- One of the things that we see in Nehemiah 10 is that the people are trying to address the areas in which they had repeatedly failed. What are the areas of your life that you have often been drawn to sin through? What are you doing to try to change that?
- A large part of the message centred on the fact that it is wrong for Christians to date or marry non Christians. Would you be able to explain to someone why this is? If this is an area that is particularly a challenge for you, please do take the time to talk with someone about it.
- Tony talked about the importance of families (not just biological families but also wider 'households' being a place of discipleship and where we remind each other of God's faithfulness. What did this look like in your life?

- We encountered a long list of names. How do you feel when you read passages like these? Be honest - do you skip over them? And yet, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) Dwell again on Nehemiah 10:1-27, sit with it for a while and ask God to show you something new in it.
- Read Matthew 21:28-31 again, the parable of the two sons. Is there any part of your life where your words to God don't match up with your actions? Where your walls have crumbled, what small action can you begin to take daily to rebuild, "brick by brick"?

Peter gives the churches 5 tips for how to stay rooted in Jesus through trials and ordeals around: expectations, looking towards God's glory, dealing with insults, identity and our feelings towards others.

- Which voices around me (insulting ones) could distract me from my identity in Christ?
- From V17-18: judgement awaits the non-believer. How can I have any bitterness towards others be turned into compassion?

- Jesus is King because He is King. We do not make Him King. We simply accept or reject His Kingship. Do you accept or reject it? Are there any areas of your life you reject His Kingship? Seek to speak to another believer about this, and bring it to Jesus in prayer.
- "Rulers of the gentiles lord it over them", while Jesus "came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life." Reflect on Jesus' humble, servant Kingship today. Consider how it differs from the world around us.
- Having received such generous grace from The King - how can you show generous grace to someone who needs it?

The passage is about modelling Jesus attitude. He suffered for us. We now life a new transformed life. Others are set to be judged by God, but we can join Jesus in His mission to spread the Gospel. Questions for reflection:
- Hands: How am I living the rest my life for the will of God? Where can I go and spread little stories about what God has saved you from?
- Head: Whilst people may feel uncomfortable with my decision to follow Jesus compared with their lifestyle, why might I still have compassion for them? (Tip: eternal perspective)
- Heart: How can I walk the balance of living IN the world, but not being OF the world?

- Read Philipians 2:37, Ephesians 5:21 and Matthew 20:25-28. Do these verses change our understanding of what it means for a Christian to submit to another person? What is our responsibility as Christians when someone submits to us?
- 1 Peter 3:4 speaks of "the unfading beauty of gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight". Iain and Caroline said that gentleness here means "strength under control" and quietness means the inner quietness that comes from trusting God in every circumstance. For all of us, men included, how are we doing in the area of gentleness and trust?
- In 1 Peter 3:7, husbands are instructed to "live with their wives in an understanding way" and to "show honour" to them. For women what are some areas where you feel that men could be more considerate and honouring towards you? For men, what is your reaction or response to this verse?

- Are you ready for mission in the knowledge of Christ's work, friendship with God, and Holy Spirit power? If not, who can you talk and pray with this week, and ongoing?

Reflection and Application: What is the attitude that you have towards the word of God, the Bible? Do you see it as authoritative in your life? How do you approach it?
In Nehemiah 8 the people assembled together to hear the teaching of God's word. Tony challenged the church about the importance of us assembling "all together" and making our Sunday Church services a real priority as it is the place where we all gather together as a church. Is being at church on Sunday a real priority to you?
In Nehemiah 8 the people had open hearts and were convicted by the preaching of the Word and wept and then were joyful. Are you open to being changed and challenged by God's word? Does it regularly convict you of sin and show you your need for grace?"

- Where do you think you might have a fight for your focus? Write a list and pray that God would give you his perspective for them.
- Nehemiah and Jesus were both deeply rooted in their relationships with God, enabling them to be strong and present int the face of attack on the role they had been given. How do you think your relationship with God impacts your day to day? How would you like that to change?

The victory of God's people is something the enemy will oppose. Are there areas in your life which seem to repeatedly challenge you? If so, spend some time in prayer asking God to strengthen you. Remember: he wants good things for his children!

- What does the fear of God mean to you? How does it affect your behaviour and day to day decisions? How does it impact the way you treat others?
- The nobles and officials showed genuine repentance when they chose to take immediate action to correct their sinful ways. Are there areas of your life that are not fully surrendered to God? What do you need to repent of today? To help you- you may want to meditate on Psalm 139: 23-24, "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

- One of the things that the people faced was a stream of discouragement, scorn and mocking. This can be something we face as we look to serve God in our community. In what ways does this happen to you? How do you deal with this? what else might help?

The passage shows that when faced with opposition and loud voice, Nehemiah spoke to God (he prayed) and spoke to the people ( he encouraged them). Is this your response? Which voices do you listen to in life? who are you encouraging?

Ultimately, Nehemiah reminded the people to base their hope in God and carry on with God's work no matter how hard things got. V14 says "Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes." Take some time to think on that verse. Remember this is not about physical fighting but being determined to serve God and see his purposes happen.

- Who has used the gift of encouragement in you in your life and seen something in you you couldn't see. How did it feel? Take a moment to let them know how it blessed you (encouragers need encouragement too!)
- Has there been someone you were too quick to exhort without encouraging or who you have encouraged but not had the confidence to urge forward? What's the next step in that relationship?
- How will you root your own identity in faith and increase your availability in order to exercise this give in the next few weeks?

- Tony spoke about the gift of discernment. Take some time to reflect on why the gift of discernment is so needed.
- He mentioned that discernment helps us to understand and separate what is good, true, and from God from that which is false, dangerous, and from other sources. How can we use the Bible to help develop this gift?
- Are you personally challenged by things in your life that might be damaging or spiritually unhealthy that you have become accustomed to and might need to change?

- Caroline described the gift of administration as steering, leading and governing. How might this definition change our attitude towards the gift?
- The lives of Jospeh, Moses, Daniel, Nehemiah and Jesus were used as examples of the gift of administration. How do these stories inspire us to desire, encourage and appreciate this gift in our church family?
- The gift of administration helps bring order out of chaos. Are there particular situations or areas of life that might require this gift at the present time? Spend some time to ask that the gift of administration be given and used in those situations.
