Coffee in the Corral: Recent Episodes

Abigail

A window into my journey of learning to be authentic and live my life wholeheartedly and un-apologetically. I do not have all the answers but I do know that it's important for us to know that we are not alone. Life is unpredictable and messy, but it is also a beautiful opportunity for us to "seize the day" and stop believing all the lies that we have been told. My hope is that through my stories people will feel seen and empowered to build the life that they want.

This is not my favorite episode. I tried to find a way to avoid talking about a recent horrific situation with AirBnb and one of their hosts, but my brain has been stuck on it.

So I showed up anyway. In the middle of the mess. And shared my story.

Life is complicated, hard, and often sucky. It’s so important that we continue building moments of joy and delight into our life.

For those that make it to the end of today’s difficult conversation, you will find a delightful video of me and my family all riding horses together. These are the moments that keep me going. ♥️

Today's episode is a little different. After seeing so much disdain, hate, and negativity online, I spent several hours writing this song. It helped me process my feelings and find what I wanted to say. So instead of talking about the current social climate, I decided to sing about it. :)

I hope this song reminds you to value all humanity, no matter what. The ecosystems that thrive are the ones that are diverse! And this includes the truth that it's good for us to have people that disagree with us. We need many perspectives!

Boxes and Lines - by AJ

9/23/25

I am right and you are wrong

And this is why I write this song

All the fighting drives me crazy

If I am pink and you are blue

What the hell does that even do

Except to separate the babies?

Boxes and lines need redesigns

And I don't need you to define

What kind of label to slap on me

If rules make laws and laws are cruel

Who do you think your gonna fool?

You're only filling up your belly

If one makes two and two makes four

Then each should get to choose their door

It's not a matter of religion

Time is short and life goes by

And I don't need to know the why

Everyone has their own opinion

A heart that beats is theirs to keep

No one wins when we all bleed

We need a thriving ecosystem

No red or blue is always true

The color pallet must include

A celebration to be human

A celebration to be human

Let's all remember we are human.

Recently my family attended the Japanese Festival held in the Japanese Garden at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park. Not only was it a gorgeous festival with incredible performances, it was also life changing. I walked into it knowing very little about the culture, but I walked out with a deep sense of respect and gratitude for the beautiful humans I encountered.

Words hardly describe the feelings our family had while we enjoyed this tiny glimpse into the culture of Japan but afterwards we all agreed that we loved the Japanese people and were all wishing we were Japanese.

Also, today I present a new event that Freedom For The Taking is going to start hosting, called “Campfire Stories”. Listen to the end for details and how you can sign up! Please share this information with your friends or anyone you think may

It's a tough one for me today.

Being a parent who loves their kids as deep and as wide as possible and watching your kids grow up and struggle might be one of the hardest parts of parenting I have yet experienced.

Today I share about how I am learning to let go of my need to make my kids happy and learn to let them have their own experiences. Somedays I feel so heavy hearted for them and wish so bad that I could make it all better.

This episode is for those parents going through the season of their kids getting older. I see you. I feel you. We must remember that this too shall pass. And if you need an excellent book to remind you to stay in your lane, check out this book.

This week I talk about something that makes me very uncomfortable to talk about.

Discussing my weight feels embarrasing but I also felt it was important to share. We are all tempted to struggle with our weight and some of us, (I’m talking about me), can get hyperfixed on a certain number. But we don’t have to stay stuck in that shame-filled space.

-How 5lbs hijacked my brain

-The tools I used to return to a healthy mindset

-My committment to myself

If you love nature and music, then you will love today's episode!

It's important that we take time to do things in our lives that bring us delight. Yes, digging deep and processing difficult things is a part of the healing process, but making space for play is also just as important.

By definition, play is about engaging in an activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose. This reminds us that it's NOT about being practical.

Play and perfection do not go together. You will notice me making "mistakes" while I play my instruments today. But that's okay!

I hope you make some time this week to do something that makes you laugh and become immersed in the present moment!

Life is what we make of it. Let's worry less about being perfect and spend more energy being playful!

After a pretty shitty week trying to problem solve and coming up with nothing but frustration, I finally turned to a book I recently got at the library.

“Don’t Believe Everything You Think” by Joseph Nguyen.

He explains why our thinking is the beginning and end of suffering.

Honestly, I am not even sure if it works, but in today’s episode, I share my new experiment of trusting divine intuition to send me answers.

Being in a state of panic and stress has never helped me find clarity. I believe there HAS to be a better way. Religion wrecked my life, but I believe that we are all intrinsically connected through nature and that the answers are inside us, waiting for us to be quiet and listen.

I highly recommend the book! Reading it brought me such peace, and where peace is, that is always where I want to be.

After 41 years and a lot of pain, there are a few things I have learned:

  • Not everyone is going to like me
  • Speaking up for the vulnerable will always piss off the bullies
  • It’s not worth being silent just to be accepted by others
  • I get to choose how to spend my time and what matters to me
  • Nature never apologizes
  • My life is too precious to waste on caring about what others think about me.

This week I share about a disturbing, recent situation with our local school. After my daughter brought home a horrific story of unacceptable behaviour from her PE coaches, I set out to bring things to the light. The response from the principal shocked me.

Hello lovelies! This week’s episode is a delightful, light-hearted exploration of the Red-winged Blackbird and why I now aspire to be like them. 🙂 Although this bird is one of the most widely spread birds in North America, I was amazed to learn how incredibly amazing this little creature is.

Sometimes I think it’s easy to think that a part of nature that is extremely common is just kind of boring - but oh would that be a mistake!

When we take time to slow down and zoom in, nature reminds us that life is beautifully complex. Red-winged Blackbirds aren’t boring blackbirds…just as you my dear friend, are not just a boring human.

You are unique, capable, amazing, and talented beyond your imagination. It’s time for us to take our power just like the blackbirds have taken theirs!

Hello friends. In this episode I share an extremely disheartening, disturbing story of a conversation I heard this week. I do not have the answers and I am extremely upset about the dehumanizing happening in our world right now. It’s unacceptable.

In honor of today’s topic, I took a walk in the woods and found a peaceful spot in the forest to podcast. I’d love for you to come along with me!

Most of us know that getting out in nature is good for us. Nature is associated with increases in happiness, subjective well-being, positive affect, positive social interactions, and a sense of meaning and purpose in life, as well as decreases in mental distress.

Today I share some interesting studies that caught my attention and gave me an even deeper understanding of how incredible nature is. Scientists continue to study this subject because there seems to be an endless wealth of benefits.

I love nature and I love learning about it! This episode inspires and encourages you to find ways to rejuvenate your soul with this beautiful, free gift - just outside your door.

We need nature because we are a part of nature. It’s time for us to come home.

Regardless of the 16-degree weather, I still recorded this week’s episode out in my corral. After watching the inauguration of Donald Trump, I knew I needed to get out of my head and into my body. Nature does this for me.

Today I share what I am doing to stay grounded amidst a lot of chaos unfolding in America.

  • What is in my control?
  • What doesn’t change?
  • What robs me of my peace?

I encourage all my listeners to make their own lists and put them up as daily reminders. 🙂

I feel like this week’s podcast episode is an important reminder that there is still a lot within our control. There is still hope. Not all is lost. We will not be silenced. We will not be put in boxes. We are powerful. Fucking powerful.

It all starts right inside our bodies. It starts with self-love and the knowledge that we still have the most important choices right in front of us.

This week on Coffee in the Corral I invite you to sit with Abigail as she shares with courage and vulnerability. If you desire to know what true authenticity and deep, life-changing healing look like, today’s your day. This gem is the real deal and this front-row seat in her corral is an honor.

This week I had jury duty.

I was not prepared for what I would experience inside that courtroom.

I don’t suppose we are ever truly prepared for the things that trigger us.

This episode I share:

  • My experience inside the courtroom
  • The moment that triggered me
  • The internal struggle
  • My decision to speak up
  • The unstoppable tears
  • Taking my power back
  • How I am finally learning to listen to my gut

Be ready for a delightful, fun-filled conversation that is sure to spark your curiosity and take you as deep as your water trough goes. 😉

Tanaya shares with us a recent experience she had while doing outside chores. The awareness she has developed is quite impressive for a 16-year-old and she challenges the rest of us to pay more attention to our bodies.

Listen to this week’s episode to learn how to not only notice the messages you tell yourself but also how to find a better way forward.

I may be partial, but I’m pretty sure Tanaya is one of the wisest 16-year-olds I have ever known. I guess you will have to listen and find out for yourself! 🙂

Today I discuss:

  1. How I am learning to take responsibility for my boundaries instead of blaming others.
  2. The calf roping competition that broke my daughter’s heart and opened my eyes.
  3. Why I believe “blending in” is ruining our society.

This is the guest that I have been dying to have on my podcast since I started podcasting two years ago!

My dearest friend and lifetime mentor, Rayna Granger, joins me this week to share her story but instead of being in my corral, I got to join Rayna in her corral along with her lovely animals!

Rayna is a highly accomplished horsewoman who has spent her life learning how to be a beautiful partner for her horses while also generously sharing her wisdom with others. I met Rayna 14 years ago at one of her horsemanship clinics, and since then we have become very close friends.

Today Rayna shares:

How she learned to protect her peace due to a childhood filled with turmoil

Her first experience on a horse

Her many learning opportunities with multiple, well-known trainers and what she learned

How horsemanship has shaped her into the woman she is today

The beauty of flowing with the lesson that comes

The way Rayna sets boundaries and knows when it’s time to let go of relationships

“It’s okay to be selective”

Why we don’t have to be afraid of being selfish

How to honor your path

The answer Rayna responds with when someone asks her, “What do you do?”

How Rayna’s dad taught her to have unlimited thinking

This conversation meant SO much to me. Rayna has been inspiring and encouraging me for many years and I am so delighted that I finally get to share her with my podcast peeps. Her calm, wise, beautiful demeanor will fill your soul while her witty, joyful self is sure to have you smiling up a storm.

She’s the real deal folks. Genuine as they come. I am deeply grateful for her friendship.

One of the books Rayna mentions that she loves:

“Who Moved My Cheese?” by Dr. Spencer Johnson

A reconnecting and insightful conversation with my dear friend, Faith Lee.

I am so delighted to bring you this beautiful conversation with the beautiful Faith Lee! Faith and I go back a LONG way. When she was 14 years old, her family lived in community with my family inside the religious cult, Rose Creek Village.

Now, almost 16 years later, we finally had the opportunity to reconnect. It was a wonderful reunion and Faith was brave and kind enough to join me on my podcast to share her story. Faith shares her journey to adulthood which eventually led to her discovery of being queer. Each of us has our own important, unique story but we can all relate to the difficulty of truly finding ourselves.

Faith is gentle, strong, wise, and knows her worth. Don’t let her soft voice fool you. Through life’s struggles, she has learned well how to love herself. Faith is another beautiful badass out there doing her work. She’s exactly the kind of person we all need on our team!

Today I find comfort in podcasting with my favorite 3 C’s of life:

  1. Coffee
  2. Corral
  3. Campfire

This episode I discuss a recent bad luck situation that triggered my trauma and threw me into a bit of a tail spin. But instead of shaming myself and shoving downt the uncomfortable feelings, I tried something different.

I tried feeling them.

And I learned something valuable.

  • Maybe rushing to find the “good” in a situation, or be grateful, or reframe it, or refocus, or make meaning of the shit, maybe we should wait…and give our body some space to work through the feelings.

I hope this episode gives you permission to be angry - to be disappointed - to be pissed - to be frustrated - to be hurt.

Remember, “We cannot heal what we cannot feel.”

I will be hopefully be on my motorcycle freedom trip next week so feel free to browse and listen to past episodes of Coffee in the Corral.

And please share with another human if this episode was helpful to you!

The unrelenting To-Do List that becomes a tsunami

A heartbreaking lesson I learned from a little horse rider in tears

Why we are all like that little girl

My upcoming motorcycle adventure and why I’m excited but terrified

Next week I will be gone so there will not be an episode coming out. Please feel free to circle back to a favorite of yours or try out some of my favorite podcasts listed below!

“We Can Do Hard Things” -Glennon Doyle (I always learn a lot from this podcast. Sometimes it’s hard stuff and sometimes it has me laughing out loud!)

A challenging and enlightening conversation with Keisha Messina

This week I was incredibly honored to have Keisha Messina come on my podcast and share how the past few years have opened her eyes to the importance of living life in full authenticity.

She bravely shares the very personal story of her partner transitioning to female and how that challenged Keisha to grow. I am so grateful for Keisha’s willingness to share what she has learned so that the rest of us can become more educated and learn how to be true allies.

Keisha talks about:

-the struggles trans people experience

-the importance of understanding and supporting the trans community

-her passion and how she got to work for the S.T.A.R.T. nonprofit

-why we need to live authentically

-the need for spouses of transitioning partners to also have support

-the two big events that S.T.A.R.T. puts on every year

-why Keisha will NOT be voting for Trump

-how just going and having those conversations can enlighten us

I loved this conversation so much. I learned a shit ton. I think you will too.

Today it’s just me sitting with my flowers, processing some hard, but important realizations.

Last week I took a walk in my back field and learned valuable things that are helping me move forward. Although this was a vulnerable and emotional episode for me, Zelle brought comedic relief by coming over at one point to share my coffee, scratching her butt on the post behind me, and then blowing her nose on the back of my head. Gotta love that horse. ;)

Here are a few things I shared:

  • Remembering to celebrate what we have already done
  • Giving myself permission to design something that fits the present me
  • Comparison blocks creativity
  • Letting go of the “old me” in order to reach for the “new me”
  • Honoring our past roles and achievements
  • It’s okay to grieve the loss
  • Our power is in knowing that we have choices
  • It’s awesome to change and continue changing

A podcast fan favorite and beloved friend of mine, Taylor Brown, is back today to answer some hard questions about religion. Taylor is such a kind, compassionate soul with a very different understanding of God than I have ever heard. Though I do not subscribe to Christianity, I do want to remain open-minded and continue to surround myself with humans who challenge me and help me not become judgemental towards others who believe differently.

*If religion has traumatized you this episode may trigger you. Still, I encourage you to be curious; this episode may help you realize that not all Christians are hateful. Taylor shows us a different way to think about it all, and he is a beautiful example of someone who loves God and also truly loves people. He isn’t interested in trying to change people or convince them to believe what he believes.

During this episode, we discuss:

  • Why does living inside boxes feel safe
  • Is it possible for a world to exist where there is a space for everyone to find what feels right to them instead of all the judging and thinking there is a right and wrong?
  • Taylor talks about his thoughts on these three concepts:
  • Being made in the image of God
  • Love the sin - not the sinner
  • Hell
  • Why the word acceptance feels patronizing
  • The story of how religion scared my mom into being responsible for other’s salvation
  • Why it’s important to Taylor to continue to speak up about controversial, religious topics on social media
  • Jesus never called anyone broken
  • How do we disagree with others without ending the relationship?
  • The most important thing Taylor wants his kids to learn from

I believe that valuing diversity is the key component to creating a better world. I purposefully seek out others with different experiences so that I don’t become narrow-minded. This conversation, though a bit triggering at times, also brought me some much-needed healing.

For me, Taylor is a beacon of hope. I hope this episode refreshes and reminds you that there are still some amazing humans in this world.

  • A conversation with my beloved partner Jennifer Gael about how we are learning to care for ourselves -

This episode my partner and I discuss:

  • My recent triathlon experience and the strange but awesome conversation I had with my body
  • How I am reframing the way I exercise
  • Jennifer’s fun idea for how we should pick the winners of a race ;)
  • The complicated relationship Jennifer has with anxiety and how she is finding the balance of allowing herself to feel but not become consumed with her feelings
  • Jennifer’s newly discovered tool to help ground herself
  • Why it is so important to not compare ourselves

I love this conversation so much - not just because it is with one of my favorite people, but because this subject is so important and we all need support in the area of self-care.

I love having practical applications and ideas of how to better care for myself and if that’s you too, then this episode is definitely for you.

In today’s podcast, I share a little about some of the things I have been wrestling to figure out in my own life.

With my girls returning to public school for their second year, I am left with some sadness and uncertainty about navigating this new season.

I discuss some things that Nate and I have been talking about as we continue to evolve in our relationship.

Here are some things I am asking myself:

What if I could reimagine every single area of my life?

What would I change if I allowed myself the freedom to think outside the box?

How can I leave guilt and fear behind and discover my truest self instead of returning to what is familiar?

Can I survive the discomfort long enough to find out what is beyond my comfort zone?

What do I believe just because it is what I have been the most exposed to?

I hope this episode encourages and inspires you to be curious about your own life. You deserve it!

Today Jade Miller, an experienced coach herself, joins me in a Zoom conversation about an area in which she has been wanting more clarity and freedom.

You guys get a front-row seat into what a coaching session with me, (Abigail Hobbs), might be like as we dive into the meaning of “play” and our beliefs about it.

Change is hardNew is hardNew change is hard and scaryBut we are here and we are taking it one step at a time. Sometimes that’s the only way to keep your head above water. Are you smack dab in the middle of the stage where your kids are growing up and starting to take wing?

If so, this episode may be for you. I don't have the answers but I do understand the struggle.

Raising kids is no walk in the park. It's more like climbing Mt. Everest, except you have absolutely no training.

It can be so hard on our hearts.

Today I share the messy middle.

My current struggles with it all.

The unrelenting mom guilt.

How do I balance empowering with no expectations?

I don't know - but damn I love my kids.

I hope you find some comfort in knowing that it's all just a wild experiment we take when we become parents and there is no one "right" way to do it.

  • Some people will not be friends for life and I have never really liked this fact. It is difficult to not take it personally when someone really likes you for years but suddenly finds you a threat when you take your freedom.

Update on our crazy last week and some slight lamenting on how I do not want to live a life where “crazy” is my normal. 🤪

  • Negative words/phrases I detest and would like to permanently remove from our language…such as
  • “I’m not perfect”
  • “Humans are flawed”
  • “Trial and Error”
  • “Mistakes and Failures”
  • I discuss how we love variation and it’s ridiculous to even think that our goal should be attaining some rigid structure.
  • Perfection should not be our goal - Growth should be our goal!
  • What if our flaws were not flaws at all…
  • I believe that life is all about learning, not about succeeding to one specific goal.
  • What might happen if we remove the negative messages in our culture and start replacing them with the idea that it’s all a part of the life learning process? Might we become less afraid and more curious???

“Truple Conversation!” #90

Today I finally was able to coordinate a time that my partners could record an episode out in my corral with me!

We chat about:

  • Our upcoming move and recent news on the house we want
  • Why Jenna is so excited about it
  • Learning to rewire the way we think about life
  • Why I struggle with believing in myself
  • How our growth causes some others to be uncomfortable
  • The ingrained religious bullshit that is hard to undo
  • Nate’s thoughts on why he doesn’t see a need to attach meaning to everything that happens in life

Finally back in the corral this week but still struggling to recover from one of the worst flu’s our family has ever gotten.

This week I discuss:

  • The flu I have unaffectionately named “the devil”
  • The stress of putting our house on the market and constantly having it ready to show while also battling fevers raging in our family
  • Finally getting an awesome offer on our house
  • The arduous, exhausting task of searching for a new home
  • Struggling to believe that there is another wonderful home just waiting for my family
  • Learning to let go of what I have now so I can receive the next new thing
  • The book I am reading now that is blowing my mind. You just need to get it and read it. It’s called, “The Jesus Mysteries - Was the “Original Jesus” a Pagan God?” by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy

“No story is good without a struggle to triumph over.”

Well, if that’s the case, then my story is getting better by the second. 🤣

Join me today as I hide in my barn from the treacherous winds outside and talk about our recent challenges of getting our house on the market and beginning the search for a new home.

Sometimes life is just the messy middle and the only thing we can do it continue showing up and believing the Universe will provide us with what we need.

It’s scary - as hell.

It’s frustrating.

It’s exhausting.

And it’s all part of this wild adventure we are on.

Join me as I process it all in real-time in hopes that it can encourage others who are in the middle of the struggle.

I got ya.

We got this.

This week my partners, Nate and Jennifer, join me to talk about some big changes in the making. Moving is one of the scariest things we do as humans but it can also be one of the best things for you if you are trying to rebuild your life.

We discuss:

  • why each of us felt it was time to move

  • what is the thing we are most excited about and what part of it is hardest for us

  • I share the story of how Shiloh spoke to me and helped me see that it was time to move on

This week I enjoyed a lovely, laid-back check-in with my beautiful Jennifer!

We discuss:

  • Jennifer's struggles with managing anxiety and learning to live life in a way that feels good to her instead of carrying everyone else's baggage.

  • My recent "trailer loading" story that ended in a bit of a disaster and had me discouraged. Jenna helps me process it a little bit which helped me not spiral into utter frustration.

  • We talk about why we love nonmonogamy, especially when it comes to running the household and not having to do it alone.

I think you will enjoy this conversation that is filled with laughter and even a hysterical story of when I compared Jennifer to our old pony which did not at all come out how I was hoping it would. ;)

An inspiring conversation with my 15-year-old as she navigates public school for the first time

Ever feel scared to death but you really want to do something?

Tanaya joins me today to share some of her experiences of high school and how she is learning to make her way in an area that is completely foreign to her.

Tanaya discusses:

  • How she first felt going to public school
  • Her determination to keep looking for a connection until she found it
  • How being brave helps her to add spice to what could be a very boring, dull school experience
  • How Tanaya showed up all the boys in a pull-up competition
  • You can’t assume someone isn’t worth becoming friends with just because they look disinterested on the outside
  • Sometimes you just have to bulldoze to claim your space
  • Tanaya’s advice to high schoolers (which is great advice for ANYONE!)

Today my youngest daughter joins me to talk about how she uses her imagination in her daily life to help bring fun to boring or challenging tasks.

We also discuss the recent “Revel”ution Campfire” event that we hosted and how I am starting a new movement that refuses to live stressed and unhappy by choosing playfulness over productivity. :)

We wrap this episode up with an impromptu game to tell each other an audiobook. We take turns and make up the story as we go and it involves lots of silliness and laughter - two of the things that we ALL could use a whole lot more of. ;)

Check out the book that I mention called “Play” by Dr. Stuart Brown!

Oh my goodness. Today I was honored to have a very meaningful conversation with my dear friend, Eden Holt. She joined me in my corral to share her life story and how her experiences have shaped where she is today.

Eden doesn’t have an easy story. She shares with us how she grew up in the foster care system and the difficult challenges it created for her as an adult. Her healing journey is not complete, (none of us will be until we die), but it’s evident that Eden has done the work and she continues to do the work to keep walking towards deeper healing.

Eden has learned to embrace herself, rewrite her story, and build a life where she feels fulfilled. As a life coach with her own business now, she helps others achieve their goals by first digging in deep to help them work their way to healing, then they can begin to set goals and achieve their dreams.

The honesty and vulnerability that Eden so graciously embodies immediately gives space for listeners to “just be human”. This conversation even helped me rewire areas I felt stuck in my brain which allowed me to see things in a new light. It was incredibly refreshing and enlightening!

This woman is amazing, full of life and light, and she has beautiful, compassionate, wisdom that each of us can benefit from.

Today is a FFT - “fucking first time” to do a podcast episode while it’s snowing. ❄️ 😊

Amidst a heavy snowfall and in between Zelle’s frequent interruptions, I share my blog entry from this week. I have recently been listening to Martha Beck and it is challenging me to look at how I go through my life. This blog talks about my thoughts and ponderings about humans and happiness and how I can not be so stressed out. 🤪

You can visit biketotype.com to read it for yourself if you would like!

I have been trying to learn how to live “IN” my life instead of “through” my life.

There are 5 questions you can ask yourself at any moment that help ground you and also remind you that feeling good doesn’t have to cost us a lot of money. Listen and participate in the 5 questions I ask today!

Gifting ourselves with things that make us happy doesn’t have to be complicated. Stay to the end of the episode to hear my campfire story!

Today I share my recent experience of how being interviewed on TV helped me see some progress in my healing journey.

Then I read an article on how our physical bodies heal.

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/treatment-tests-and-therapies/how-wounds-heal

I share how learning these facts enlightened me to have compassion for my own healing journey.

These are my takeaways:

  • You must have all the right components to start the process (enough blood)
  • It takes a very specific balance of all the different factors for us to heal correctly (not too much or too little oxygen)
  • It doesn’t look pretty (scabby, oozing fluids, inflammation, etc.)
  • Trauma doesn’t heal and disappear (scars)
  • It can be fucking uncomfortable (stretching, itching, puckering of the wound…)
  • It takes a long time (story of my hand injury -torn ligament)
  • Other life issues/experiences/things out of our control can interrupt the healing process
  • If we are in circumstances that compromise our well-being, it can feel impossible to heal because our bodies are already in survival mode (chronic wounds).
  • It’s important to reach out when things do not seem to be getting better. Sometimes we can care for our own wounds but there are times that it’s really important to get professional help.

Each step, every day is a success worth celebrating.

Healing doesn’t feel very healing but I promise you it’s worth it.

It was 2 degrees outside with a wind chill of -10. 😱

Good thing I love extreme challenges!

Join me in my barn, in front of my little propane heater while I discuss some of the recent struggles that I am working on.

  • Why is it so HARD for me to tell people to call me my name?
  • One of my biggest annoyances is not understanding my feelings
  • One of the regular practices of the cult to help people “work things out” which traumatized me
  • Struggling to be my own person and not feel guilty for having different needs than my partners
  • Why and what I will be “escaping” the rest of my life

Happy New Year! Today I summarize my 2023 and share how I am reframing my perspective. It’s easy to see how many goals I didn’t reach and forget to acknowledge all the other things that I did accomplish.

We can plan for our year but we can never plan for all the shit that we don’t know is coming. It’s important that we recognize all the challenges we faced last year and the obstacles we overcame so we can celebrate our successes instead of just seeing what we failed to do.

  • “What is the meaning of life?” is the question my son wrote on my whiteboard over Christmas break.
  • What is the meaning of change?
  • Is the pursuit of happiness too much pressure?
  • How can we enjoy the moments of beauty between the struggles?

Today I discuss my recent epiphany about a new kind of list that I am implementing into my life. We are usually pretty good at writing “To Do” lists but are we forgetting to write our “To Grow” lists?

  • Join me as I share the things on my “To Grow” list and why I believe it’s so important that we are intentionally seeking growth.
  • “If we don’t grow, we get left behind.”

For the second half of this episode, I pose the question, “How many summers do you have left?” and then we dive into the vital topic of not wasting our lives pleasing others.

  • Dare to rewrite your holiday story
  • Choose to say no to something this season that doesn’t feel good to you
  • Create an “Honor Plan” and have it in place for those family get-togethers

I hope you all find moments of peace in the middle of this often chaotic, sometimes painful season. I love ya. I got ya.

This week my friend Michelle Steverson came out to my horse corral and had a deeply vulnerable conversation with me as she shared her life story. I was very honored to hold space for Michelle as she told me about her different life experiences which held a lot of pain and hardship.

Listening to her I saw such beauty because even though things still feel very much like the messy middle, here she is, continuing to show up every day as she seeks healing and growth.

We all need to hear each other's stories. It helps us remember that we are not alone. Although each of our experiences is unique to our life, there is always a common thread of struggle and pain. I am so grateful that Michelle was willing to open up and continue sharing her story in hopes of encouraging someone else.

She is a rare jewel.

This is Part 1 of the conversation. Make sure you head to the next episode to hear the second half of her story and what she is working on in her current life.

This week I bring my friend Kyle Tracy back onto my podcast to talk about what it's like being queer.

Kyle is the founder of the "Non Permitted Project" here in Joplin, MO, and this week I traveled to his office to have our conversation.

Kyle brings his honest, brave, authentic self to every conversation and it's always an honor to talk with him.

Kyle graciously takes us back to his childhood and shares what it was like for him growing up and discovering his queerness. I believe this is an important conversation that can give insight to others and act as a guide and reminder that those of us in the LGBTQIA+ community are not alone.

We also dive into what it is like for Kyle now as an adult who owns several businesses and is constantly doing things out in the community.

Kyle encourages all of us who might be struggling to accept ourselves and share our truth with the world, to "Set easy, attainable goals, and take it one step at a time."

First things first: I bought a MOTORCYCLE!!! I share a little about my purchase and the fucking scary ride bringing it home. 🙂

Secondly: I spend the rest of the podcast talking about my partner Nate and what I love about him. Why? Well, because he’s fucking awesome but specifically because the day I record this episode is me and Nate’s 19th wedding anniversary. I couldn’t help but spend this hour telling a few stories about our marriage and why we continue to keep choosing each other.

  • Learning to ride as if I am invisible and how that got me thinking about my own life
  • What Nate said about seeing life from a different perspective when a certain point of view makes us feel hopeless
  • We don’t see things as they actually are. We see the world in a way that makes sense to us.

Today's episode is a bit challenging at the beginning due to the neighbor cows lamenting the loss of their babies, Zelle's determination to knock over the tripod, and every loud truck in MO driving past my house. Uge! Nevertheless, I persevered because I had a really important subject to talk about.

Today I dig in a little bit on the subject of being "triggered".

I share 3 helpful steps I experimented with this week when I had to work through some huge triggers:

    1. Give yourself space
    1. Be curious
    1. Write
  • Which leads us to the biggest step in our healing...learning to advocate for ourselves.

At the end of the episode, I read a letter that I wrote to myself in the midst of feeling scared and triggered.

This is my favorite podcast yet with my two partners, Nate and Jennifer, as we talk about how our relationship works.

We discuss:

  • A recent article I read about when the term "heterosexual" was invented

  • Why does it matter if we are queer or how we identify?

  • The template we are handed when we marry as heterosexual

  • The challenges and joys of being a non-monogamous "throuple"

  • What really is normal?

  • Are our thoughts really our own?

  • Why Jennifer hates labels

  • How have these changes affected how Nate perceives himself and has he been a bit "different" all along?

Today I take an uncommon approach for my podcast and I bring my electric piano into the corral to share a new song I wrote. :) I have never played piano for my horses so this episode is really special to see how much the horses loved the music. Definitely check out the video!!

But before I sing I talk a little about how the episode I wanted to record got sabotaged by my day turning upside down. I am learning a bit about "resiliency" from a recent podcast.

Check out the interview that Robin Douglass did with Resiliency coach Michelle Dickinson on the Coming Out Late Podcast episodes #98 and #99.

The phrase that keeps repeating in my head that Michelle said is "Challenges are opportunities for expansion."

"The Truth Awoke" by Abigail Hobbs

You showed up, and I shut out

The voices screaming deep inside

Betrayed by my own feelings

Religion stripped me of my rights

Years went by, I tried to cope

Convinced that it was I who was wrong

You played the game, played the part

And you strung my heart along

But the truth awoke: Time is up

Turns out, you are a fuck

And I won’t listen to your lies

You can’t fool me anymore

Gravity you can’t deny

Reality kicked down the door

Don’t show me your sad face

Cause I put your ass in its rightful place

Yeah don’t show me your sad face

Cause I put your ass in its place

Don’t tell me that you’re sorry

Forgiveness never did me well

You used your god to bring me shame

Poisoning me with fear of hell

Well, I’m done, and I don’t care

If you think that I’m a bitch

I found out, found my voice,

Stopped the train, made the switch

Cause the truth awoke, Time is up

Go pay the price to be a fuck

I’m no longer the me you brainwashed me to be

I locked you up, burned the key,

Now I’m living wild and free

Cause the truth awoke, Time is up

I am free and you are stuck

Religion stripped me of my rights

Years went by, I tried to cope

Convinced that it was I who was wrong

You played the game, played the part

And you strung my heart along

But the truth awoke: Time is up

Turns out, you are a fuck

And I won’t listen to your lies

You can’t fool me anymore

Gravity you can’t deny

Reality kicked down the door

Don’t show me your sad face

Cause I put your ass in its rightful place

Yeah don’t show me your sad face

Cause I put your ass in its place

Don’t tell me that you’re sorry

Forgiveness never did me well

You used your god to bring me shame

Poisoning me with fear of hell

Well, I’m done, and I don’t care

If you think that I’m a bitch

I found out, found my voice,

Stopped the train, made the switch

Cause the truth awoke, Time is up

Go pay the price to be a fuck

I’m no longer the me you brainwashed me to be

I locked you up, burned the key,

Now I’m living wild and free

Cause the truth awoke, Time is up

I am free and you are stuck

Today I talk about a recent podcast I listened to that has gotten me thinking about what it means to live satisfied.

Here are the things I discuss:

  • Glennon Doyle's "We Can Do Hard Things" podcast episode #239 'Why are we never satisfied?'

  • How our capitalist culture is designed to keep us always wanting more

  • My struggles with being a goal-oriented person

  • Simple things I have been noticing in my life that bring me full satisfaction

  • Learning to not subscribe to the "hustle culture" or the "capitalist culture"

  • 3 questions to ask yourself this week...

  • Comparing is one of the biggest reasons I feel dissatisfied

  • 5 ways I help myself stay grounded, grateful, and satisfied!!!!

  • Another beautiful day in my corral to talk about how I am feeling in my heart with all the recent big changes in our family. I also share a story about kayaking my ponds last week and how it turned into an amazing experience filled with beautiful lessons for me. I hope you enjoy the stories and are inspired to find ways to fill your soul and find the little gifts life has already waiting for you.

My pond take-a-ways:

  • “It’s not what you saw that mattered; it was that you were looking.”
  • “If you have a specific thing you are looking for, you will miss seeing all the other things.”
  • Just look with an open heart. There are thriving opportunities everywhere.”

Today we shake things up and do an interactive walk around my front pasture with Zelle!

In this “Trek to Connect” I learned:

  • To discard my fear of being messed up
  • I have a hard time not micromanaging my kids and I need to let them find their way (I learned this by trying to help Zelle find the carrot 🙂)
  • That my overthinking is making me tired
  • To let go of my worry that I am not capable of handling all the big changes
  • I need to take time to allow the answers to come
  • How grateful I am for the things Zelle teaches me
  • Zelle was my mirror today and I realized that I tend to burst from one thing to the next and carry stress and anxiety with me
  • Taking time to be a” human-being” instead of a “human-doing” can help ground me and give me time for my fears to subside
  • Balancing my life is not about not falling off; it's how I treat myself when I do lose my balance

Today’s session was really good for me. I hope you too find value in it.

Today is a vulnerable episode of the significant changes happening in our family.

-My son heads off to college

-My girls start public school for the first time

My horses circled up to support me, (Zelle was basically trying to crawl in my lap), as I read my most recent blog post describing my feelings on all of it.

Change is difficult even when it's really good change.

My emotions spilled over today as the reality continues to hit me.

I hope this episode encourages others that it's never too late to make changes in your life once you realize you want to do something different.

You get to choose the life you live and you don't have to be stuck in one way even if you have done it for a long time.

Let's keep moving toward the things that bring us peace!

This week I have a special guest, Adrienne Weston, join me today on Coffee in the Corral!!

Be ready to be inspired and amazed at the bravery of this woman as she talks about the trauma she experienced growing up and how she has taken her freedom.

Trigger Warning: Childhood sexual abuse

  • Adrienne shares about her job and why she loves it so much. Her passion is almost palpable as she explains how meaningful it is.
  • We hear about her best friend, her painful childhood, the dysfunctional family dynamics, and how it all turned into her being responsible for whether her dad went to prison or not. It’s a heart-wrenching story but I know there are many of us who can relate in some way.
  • Then we get to hear about how Adrienne started taking her power back and finally deciding to say “Fuck No!” It’s so inspiring to hear how she is actively seeking healing and rewriting the story for her own kids.
  • It’s a difficult listen sometimes but I promise you, it’s worth it. This lady is a shining example that nobody has to ever stay stuck in a toxic way of living when they decide they are done with it.

Adrienne is one badass woman with a vital message for the world. She is honest, brave, relatable, engaging and vibrant! She is an unstoppable force using her power to do great things for those in her life path. A huge thank you again to her for being so brave to share her life story with all of us!

This episode reminds us how important it is to integrate all the parts of ourselves. Our bodies work so hard for us. I am learning to love mine and take better care of her.

I hope this episode encourages you to dig deep. Your body deserves all the love and care you can give it. hugs

"Rebuilding isn't the hard part; The tearing out, getting rid of the old, that's the hard part." - Abigail Hobbs

  • Story of doing a big siding job with Nate and how I was shocked to learn that it's the dismantling of the job that's the most difficult part.

  • Story of my second job with Nate replacing rotten facia board and how I learned it takes a team to keep each other protected and safe.

  • Story of how my "simple" recycling project turned into two days, a lot of work, and a lesson about why it's hard to rewire our minds.

  • The negative messaging that I am working on deconstructing right now.

Here are some of the takeaways from today's episode:

  1. It takes a lot of time and effort to dismantle the old patterns and beliefs we have had our whole life.
  2. Our brains are designed for continual upkeep.
  3. Sometimes we need a professional to help us through really dangerous spaces.

"Deconstructing always happens before improvement." - Abigail Hobbs

  • The challenge of being in a space of self-discovery

  • Why do we picture our path through life to be straight????

  • Why Tanaya's favorite change in our family is the freedom to be a part of the LGBTQIA+ community and how a simple trip to the Dollar Store turned into Tanaya allowing herself to be disappointed and discovering that she likes weird things!

  • Getting stuck in guilt and how to combat the negative messages we tell ourselves

  • What her therapist said to her about "second chances"

  • How Jennifer fits into the LGBTQIA+ community and why she feels honored to belong to it

Jennifer's Bio:

Born and raised in California, Jennifer is a beach girl all the way. She moved to MO to attend Ozark Christian College where she got her degree in Biblical Literature and Psychology. She married young and after years of infertility, she and her husband adopted 3 children, one with special needs. Besides raising children, she also taught foster parenting and adoption classes and worked for Rapha House as International Director of Client Services including living in Cambodia for 2 years.

After almost 25 years of marriage, Jennifer began to realize she was in an abusive situation and did not want to spend the rest of her life trapped and unhappy. Through a strange turn of events, Jennifer discovered her queerness when she met and fell in love with Abigail. This was the beginning of Jennifer finding herself, and building a life she loved.

Jennifer offers life coaching to individuals struggling in their lives and needing someone to walk alongside them. She is a gem. Her life experiences give her the ability to understand the struggle but she also helps people discover their value and can empower them to pursue a life they desire.

  • Today is an emotional but important episode about grief. A year ago, I came home from a trip to my beloved Shiloh dying. Even though she was old and lived a beautiful and long life, I wasn't ready to say goodbye. I don't think we are ever prepared for the pain and grief of loss.

  • Today I allow myself to feel and acknowledge the grief I carry every day.

  • I also discuss a different kind of grief which is choosing to let go of people in your life that are toxic.  It's okay to miss them still.

  • Learning to make myself take time to feel the grief so that I can move on and not run from it until it builds up and overtakes me.

  • Realizing that I cannot live a wholehearted life if I can't allow myself to have "all" of the human experience and feelings.

  • Good morning from a snowy corral! The first podcast to be fully videotaped. Check out youtube soon to watch the live show with horses milling about and stealing most of the show ;).

  • Lies that I have believed for most of my life: 1. Be selfless. 2. Never trust yourself. 3. Being a mother is the most important job in the world. 4. Exercise is worldly. 5. You are born a sinner. 6. There are only two paths to follow.

  • Truths I now embrace: 1. Selfish is not bad. 2. Trust your intuition. 3. It's essential for mothers NOT to give up themselves. 4. Exercise keeps us alive! 5. You are perfect. 6. There are as many paths as there are humans alive.

  • Karen Young writes about 'intuition' and many other important topics. Check her out at heysigmund.com

  • "The Virtue of Selfishness" by Ayn Rand is a book I am listening to that I'm fucking loving. Also, check out her website aynrand.org to read her other incredible articles.

  • This episode was recorded while the local news station, KSN 4 States News, filmed me to use for my interview today!

  • Today I read through my newly written list titled "Future Me" that I am going to use as my life guide from now on

  • Here are the bullet points to my "Future Me" list. It is written as if I am talking to myself. I highly recommend writing up one for yourself!

I will always consider your needs first.

I will not put you in positions anymore that require you to suppress things that bother you.

You are not an endless source of energy.

If it's not a hell yes, then it's a hell no.

You have permission to show how you feel.

You are 100% responsible for your own happiness AND 100% NOT responsible for others'happiness.

Only you know what you truly "can" and "want" to handle.

Know who you are. Be realistic in your expectations of yourself.

Your full glass is ALL yours. Others get the overflow.

You get to use your voice. All the time. Every time.

You don't have to be everyone's best friend.

Fiercely guard the beautiful life you worked damn hard for.

Life is too short to spend on others' happiness.

Let go, move on and let others live how they want to.

The new you is the true you.

The best thing you can do for others is to stand 100% in your freedom.

Realizing how stuck I feel in an area of my life brings me to read a recent blog post I wrote. Turns out I have been home schooling for 11 years and never felt the freedom to speak my truth. This episode is very vulnerable and raw and I don't have the answers. But I encourage everyone to not settle for anything less than what sets their soul free.
