Today’s episode has a slightly different rhythm from our regular Care on Your Terms podcast as we shift our focus to grief. This episode - called Grief on Your Terms - welcomes Leigh Tysor, a talented writer and artist, who shares one of her writings - her personal story of grief in her own words. As she shares, you'll hear about love, responsibility, loss, guilt, and healing. You'll hear what it means to care for others and what it takes to finally turn that same care inward. Most of all, you'll hear how Leigh is learning to grieve on her own terms. _________________Connect with us!- Learn more about free grief support in the Piedmont Triad: https://www.hospiceofthepiedmont.org/programs/grief-counseling/- View upcoming grief support events, workshops and programs: https://www.hospiceofthepiedmont.org/events/grief-counseling/- Listen to other podcast episodes: https://www.hospiceofthepiedmont.org/ourpodcast/- Send us an email: podcast@hospiceofthepiedmont.org_______________Presented by Hospice of the Piedmont and Hospice of Randolph, Care on Your Terms is an educational podcast series featuring honest conversations aimed at helping people find the right support at the right time. Caregiving has a way of stretching the soul, sometimes cracking it open, sometimes filling it to overflowing, and often doing both in the same breath. As we approach the holiday season, this E-Series episode spends a few minutes reflecting on gratitude, not as a simple emotion or a “bright-side” requirement, but as a lifelong practice that can coexist with exhaustion, grief, frustration, and love.Presented by Hospice of the Piedmont and Hospice of Randolph, The E-Series is an educational webinar series aimed at engaging our community, exploring relevant topics and educating about ways to connect with our organization. For the next two episodes, we tackle a tough conversation topic - grief and its impact on children and teens. The loss of a loved one impacts every family unit, and knowing how to nurture open communication with children and teens about grief can be incredibly uncomfortable and overwhelming. In this first episode, Grief Support Specialist Shelley Kirby turns our attention to the grief we experience before a loss - called anticipatory grief - and how this type of grief can impact children and teens emotionally, physically and behaviorally. Shelley also equips us with practical conversation starters and other helpful strategies to more quickly recognize grief and support grieving children and teens in the face of impending loss and changing family dynamics. Episode two will publish at the end of August, so be sure to tune in for the remainder of our conversation as shift our focus to the grief children and teens can experience after a loss. This episode is a special caregiving conversation between Caroline Oxford, Director of Family Care Services at Hospice of the Piedmont, and one of our team members Carla Higgins, Medical Records Specialist. Carla has worked with Hospice of the Piedmont, and our affiliate organization, Hospice of Randolph, for a little more than 2 decades. During that time, she has experienced a variety of caregiving seasons with her family members. She is no stranger to what is called the "sandwich generation" - those caring for both aging parents and children at the same time. Additionally, Carla represents the 6 out of 10 working caregivers pulled between the needs of their career and the needs of their loved ones.SHOW NOTES:In this podcast, Carla mentions numerous encouragements for caregivers. Here are a few to consider:1) Find ways to recharge and care for yourself by reconnecting with your role outside of caregiving. Grab dinner, have someone come over so that you can take a short break or do an activity you enjoy, or even play a game or work on a puzzle after everyone is asleep. Find ways to connect with things you enjoy and incorporate that into your day. 2) Put your pride to the side, and be open to receiving help from family members and friends. Be open and honest with those around you and let them help you. 3) Have a phone partner - someone that you can trust and call anytime - when you need to let out your stress. If you don't have this, seek it out. Most people are more than willing to be supportive in this way if you are honest with your needs. Resources in this podcast (and a few extra!) are linked below.
