The hospitality industry has been hit hard by the pandemic and many have lost their jobs. Your hosts Niki and Robin will shine a light on the industry we have dedicated our careers to and elevate the voices of colleagues and industry leaders as they offer a message of optimism and hope for the future of the hospitality industry. Don't Look Under The Bed seeks to encourage and inspire as the industry continues on the road to recovery.
What started out as dry January has morphed into a sober movement where people are abstaining from alcohol due to a number of reasons: Perhaps they overindulged during the pandemic, they want better physical and mental health, or perhaps folks are simply tired of being hungover. According to a Forbes article (Jan 2023) the sober movement is driven by Millennials and Gen Z who are not big on drinking. Sober Bars offer a non alcoholic option for those who want to participate in the ritual of celebration and socializing while enjoying a sexy non alcoholic craft cocktail or non alcoholic wine or beer. Study researcher, Gretchen Andsager for NCSolutions says, " This is a growing industry trend and the market value is between $8 billion and $11 billion for low and no alcohol beverages, so it's definitely a growing industry in general that many companies are starting to tap into". Our guest this week is Sydney Eason, Co-Founder of Eason Branding, a Hospitality Branding and Marketing Firm. Sydney discusses the emerging sober movement, the various non-alcoholic options available, how hotels and restaurants can build out their non-alcohol programs and more. www.easonbranding.com IG: @easonbranding Sober Bars NYC: Hekate East Village, Sechey West Village, Absence of Proof / Houston: Better Luck Tomorrow, Monkey's Tail, Daily Gather / Austin: Sans Bar/ San Francisco: Ocean Beach Cafe/ Chicago: Benedicion Dry Bar, Prazbar/ Washington DC: Binge Bar/ Phoenix: The Nixer Learn more about your ad choices. Summertime is SMERF season. The time when hotels have the opportunity to fill room in the off-season and need periods. SMERF represents Social, Military, Educational, Religious and Fraternal Groups. Common events include weddings, family reunions, military reunions, sports tournaments, religious retreats, multicultural and LBGTQIA+ events. SMERF groups come in all sizes with a variety of needs and budgets. Working with SMERF groups is a great way to fill up lower tiered rooms and increase occupancy at your property. It's an important segment and the groups should be treated with the same level of care and attention as any corporate group.

The Sales and Catering Team is charged with generating revenue for the hotel. We share the sleeping rooms and the event space. When a business opportunity comes across our desk the goal is to qualify it and eventually convert it to a definite booking. It's important that we communicate with our team members and be honest with our clients. When clients tell us that they need set up at 6pm and there is an event in session until 6pm, it takes teamwork and partnership to make it work.

In the early days of my career I always heard people say, “find a mentor”. I never thought that it applied to me. Who would support me when I expressed interest in advancing my career? Who would have time to mentor ME? How do I find a mentor or sponsor? How do I ask? In an article in themuse by Jo Miller, she outlines six steps you can take to attract the attention of an influential sponsor and states, "you don't get to choose the sponsor; the sponsor almost always chooses you". Niki and I discuss our lived experiences, where we are currently in our careers, if we should be further along based on of our years of service in the hospitality industry, and whose responsibility it is to get us to the next level. A recent study published by the Castell Project, Inc. titled "Black Representation in Hospitality Leadership 2021", states that Black Executives represented 1.6 percent of hospitality industry executives at the executive through CEO level on company websites in 2020. One in 5.7 industry employees is Black compared to one of 49 Vice Presidents and one of 58 EVP/SVPs shown on websites. There has been progress however, Blacks in Hospitality leadership are still very much underrepresented when compared to other industries.
ABOUT THE CASTELL PROJECT Castell Project, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women to the highest levels within the hospitality industry. With support from industry partners, Castell delivers impactful leadership development for rising female industry executives, innovative research on diversity in the hospitality industry, Castell@College connecting executive women to students, WSH List connecting conference organizers to expert women speakers, and Fortuna’s Table bringing women into hotel ownership. It's has truly been the season of Davonne as she has been a guest on 15 podcasts, featured in 26 articles (Forbes, Black Enterprise, The Root to name a few) developed 50 new hotel investors and closed on 2 hotels in the same day.
I have been in the hotel business for 30+ years and never considered the possibility of of hotel ownership. In my mind it was only available to a few wealthy individuals.
Davonne Reaves had the audacity to dream big and she used what she learned during her unpaid internship to start her business and create a pathway to hotel ownership to those of us who never knew it was possible.
Less than 2% of the nation's hotels are owned by African Americans and Davonne is sharing her knowledge and expertise to create 221 new hotel owners.
Niki and I talk to Davonne about her journey, her purpose and so much more!

Niki and Robin are delighted to welcome Melissa DelBuono, co-founder of Project Save Hospitality. Melissa was laid off from her job in the hotel industry and came together with her friend Kingsley Egbuchunam to help their colleagues. They started talking to employers outside of the hospitality industry and it became clear that many were unaware of the many skills hospitality workers have and how easily those skills transfer to other careers. Project Save Hospitality's goal is to foster professional development, celebrate hospitality for its many contributions, highlight the amazing workforce and shine a light on the skill set which would immediately transfer the other industries.
