Fourth Universalist Society was excited to welcome Anne Bokma this Sunday. She is an award-winning journalist, author, newspaper columnist and memoir writing coach from Ontario where she is an active member of the First Unitarian Church of Hamilton. He has been an active socialist and trade unionist for around 4-5 years and a Buddhist for around 2 years. In particular, he helped organize local Deliveroo/Uber Eats workers. He describes himself as a Marxist and a Buddhist, and both philosophies are a big part of how he views the world.

This is a record of that event.The leadership of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), representing over 1.7 million people, voted in June 2022 to divest their religious organization’s financial holdings from five oil companies. We are excited to welcome Rev. Colleen Earp (she/her) and Rev. Dexter Kearny (he/his), two lead organizers with Fossil Free Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), a years-long movement dedicated to advocacy for change in the PCUSA. Colleen Earp (she/her) serves as the Program Director at Massanetta Springs Camp and Conference Center in the Shenandoah River watershed. Naava Smolash, who sometimes writes under the pen name Nora Samaran, is a community organizer based in Vancouver and Montreal, and teaches in the English department at Douglas College. Her writing appears in academic and popular publications including Lit Hub, Everyday Feminism, Room Magazine, Briarpatch, West Coast Line, English Studies in Canada, Studies in Canadian Literature, Dwutigodnik, and the University of Toronto Quarterly. Her essay “The Opposite of Rape Culture is Nurturance Culture” went viral in 2016 and grew into the book Turn This World Inside Out: the Emergence of Nurturance Culture (AK Press, 2019). She is currently working on a speculative fiction novel tentatively titled We Live at the River.

On February 23rd 2021, Fourth Universalist Society Bruce Pollack-Johnson for an In Conversation discussion of the 8th Principle and Confronting White Supremacy. This is a recording of that event.
Bruce Pollack-Johnson grew up in a suburb of Boston, studied Sociology and Education at Brandeis University, and earned a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of Pennsylvania, with a dissertation about educational planning. He was a professor at Oberlin College in the 80’s, then moved to the Philadelphia area as a professor at Villanova University, where there is an active Peace & Justice Education program. Bruce has created a course for undergraduate students called Math and Fairness, and a research seminar for upper-level math and statistics majors called Math and Social Justice, both of which count for Peace & Justice credit. He is also on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees of his Department and of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Bruce is currently Assistant Moderator and Chair of the Justice Council at the UU Church of the Restoration in Philadelphia, which led civil rights work against blockbusting in the 60’s and in 2017 was the first UU congregation to pass the 8th Principle, which Bruce co-wrote with Paula Cole Jones. Bruce can often be found singing at protests and rallies in Philly, and at the weekly Black Lives Matter vigils Restoration has held since 2014.

Jeff Smith has been a community organizer in Grand Rapids for 40 years. He is the founder of the Grand Rapids Institute for Information Democracy and the Grand Rapids People's History Project. Jeff has also been a food grower for 40 years, worked as a community farmer and has taught Food Justice classes for the last 15 years. Jeff started Garden's for Grand Rapids 6 years ago, which provides raised beds, soil and plants for families that are food insecure at no cost. Jeff uses only heirloom seeds, practices seed saving and has a greenhouse to go along with his garden. He also does canning workshops for people who want to preserve more of their own food.
