I want to use this opportunity to tell you about one of my favorite human beings of all time: Charlie Munger. You may have never heard the name Charlie Munger before, but in my line of work, there are very few people who don’t know who he was– or, at the very least, who haven’t been influenced by him in some way.

Charlie was a lot of things: investor, businessman, philanthropist, vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, and a key partner to Warren Buffett. He’s famous for his investing acumen, sharp wit, and for being a proponent of the investment philosophy of value investing.

He’s also much more than that to me. So today I’m going to dive into the five life lessons I have learned from Charlie that can not only help you in investing, but all aspects of your life. Tune in to today’s episode of CAPitalize Your Finances and get some of the best advice I’ve ever received!

One of the most powerful things you can do as a human being is to challenge your own perceptions and embrace the power of being true to your own nature. My guest on today’s podcast, Shane Baldwin, did exactly that, and he wrote an astonishingly honest book about his experiences.Shane wrote The Honest Lie during his five-year prison sentence for securities fraud. How do you tell an “honest lie” and what does that mean? Can you actually speak your own desires into existence? How was Shane able to make $1 million in 60 days? What is the biggest fear he has today in his professional life?

Sometimes it’s just a matter of trusting and believing in yourself and then acting on that trust to make your life’s wishes come true. Learn all about it with me and my wonderful guest, Shane Baldwin, on today’s episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

It’s been said that if you’re human, you have flaws; and those flaws can actually work to your advantage. The person who said that just happens to be my wonderful guest on today’s episode, Efren Delgado. Efren is author of The Opposite is True: Discover Your Unexpected Enemies, Allies, and Purpose Through the Eyes of Counterintuitive Psychology, a mammoth book about turning your “failures” into successes. When meeting someone for the first time, how do you get that person to trust you? How do you read into someone’s body language? Where does the concept of Groupthink come in? And can you really simply “trust your gut” when it comes things like finances?I’ve got so much to talk about with Efren today, and I know you’ll find this interview as captivating and insightful as I did.

What really sets the go-getters apart from the rest? It's not just luck or a roll of the dice. It's about having faith in their own abilities and then working tirelessly to make those dreams come true.

My guest, Max Lewis, is one of those people. From selling mangos as a child to amassing millions by exchanging propane tanks, Max overcame adversity and built himself into an ultra-high net-worth individual by 36 years old. He’s also the author of “Who Is Max Lewis? 37 chapters, 37 Lessons, $37 million,” and it is safe to say he is worth listening to when it comes to building a business (and selling it for a boatload of cash).

What did his early experience selling mangoes teach him about the business world? What led him into looking at real estate as an investment? What does Max think is the biggest business mistake that most people make? And how does someone in business create a “partnership” with their clients as opposed to just looking at them as customers?

Want to know more? Tune in and listen to me and Max Lewis on today’s episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

Today I want to introduce you to a new friend of mine, Eugene Marshall, a tax advisor and founder/CEO of Magnolia Tax Services in Chicago. As most CAPitalizers know, tax planning and tax management are two of the most important elements of financial planning, and we're going to cover that topic thoroughly today.

As always, I’ve got MANY questions for Eugene: What are some of the most common mistakes that both business owners and everyday people make when it comes to taxes? What are some strategies to give someone who’s looking to save on their taxes? What let Eugene into the world of real estate and how did it help to build his net worth? And how has the rise in interest rates affected his portfolio and what are some of the things he's doing to mitigate those risks?

These questions, and MUCH more, covered with me and Eugene Marshall on today’s episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

No matter what you might be selling, the fact is that today's buyers value empathy, relevance, and intimacy over sales pitches, sales hype, and sales jargon. I’ll talk to David about how he got into true sales consulting in the first place, and I’ll ask him about the whole idea of a work-life balance – does it really exist? One of the most commonly-heard terms in finance is Asset Allocation. Oddly enough, it's also one of the most misunderstood terms as well. Many people have heard of it, but they don't understand its true value... or how much value it has at all... if any.

On today's episode of CAPitalize Your Finances, we'll go over what it is, how it works, and why it's perhaps a little too popular and leaned on a bit too much. When is it appropriate to use what's known as traditional asset allocation? Can sticking to a traditional asset allocation when growing your net worth hurt you in the long run? How do I go about creating my own "new and improved" version of asset allocation to grow my own net worth?

You asked me to do a show about asset allocation, and you got it! Tune in and get your questions answered!

Are you an NFL player who's made it onto a team for this year? Congratulations! That's something that so very few athletes are able to accomplish. At the same time, it's important to know that having achieved that status means you've got your work cut out for you, in more ways than one.

Beyond the work you have to do on the field, you've got things to consider off the field - not the least of which is your finances. Even if you're "just" making the league minimum salary, that's still a lot of money that you'll need to make last, because unlike most non-athletes, you can't say with any certainty when your career will be over.

How do you plan for your future outside of football?

How do you approach investing and planning at that level of income?
And how can you build a savings when the temptation to spend and spend some more is overwhelming?

These are just a few of the questions I'll ask - and answer! - on today's episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

This is exciting stuff, and I can't wait to share it with you!  Join me and learn all about the Endowment Model on today's episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

Today’s program will be entirely devoted to answering your questions, things many of you have written to me about over the past few weeks. I will be doing so using a slight twist of finance by focusing on the world of entrepreneurship. This is a huge topic for many of you CAPitalizers out there.

I should say right off that being an entrepreneur is not for everyone. Those of you who are excited to get into the world of running your own business need to know that the title of business owner comes with a tremendous amount of responsibility and stress; your character is on the line every single day, exponentially more than those who work for you.

That being said, it’s time to answer the big questions of entrepreneurship: How do you avoid making business mistakes that are obvious in hindsight, but not so obvious at the time?  What would I say was my biggest “failure,” and what would I have done differently when I first started in this business? And with so much to think about in the business world, how would I advise someone to balance everything out?

Get the answers to your business owner questions on today’s episode of CAPitalize  Your Finances!

How does learning about competition in sports translate to the business world?  Are colleges today doing a better job at prepping their student athletes for a life after sports?  And, maybe most importantly, what's the best financial advice Malcolm could give to these athletes that have either made it, or who are on the verge of making it in their respective sports?

I’m thrilled to be able to talk today with Kyle McDowell, author of “Begin With WE” – a USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-seller that examines the root causes of dysfunction in business, especially what he calls the plague of a “me-oriented” paradigm.

When we make big decisions - like who we marry, how to date, where to live - we often just go with our gut instinct. But that "gut feeling" we get is very often wrong - and data can prove it.

My guest, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, author of "Don't Trust Your Gut: Using Data to Get What You Really Want in Life," has some of the best insights into just how wrong we are when it comes to improving our own lives.  It's really a lack of emotional intelligence which draws people to the "shinier" objects and people in life, rather than toward what will make them ultimately successful.

How can we combat this so that people can learn to live a data-driven, fulfilling career while also making some good money?  How do we set ourselves up for success? What is Seth's concept of the Zero Profit Condition all about? Can you create your own "DaVinci Effect" in business?

Join me on a fascinating journey with Seth Stephens-Davidowitz on today's episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

My guest today is Alec Ingold, fullback for the Miami Dolphins, a Walter Payton nominee of 2020, and author of "The Seven Crucibles: An Inspirational Game Plan for Overcoming Adversity."  One of the first things he wrote, which hooked me immediately, was: "Chasing dreams without adversity is like winning a video game on the easiest setting."  This is relatable on SO many levels.

Every goal, every dream, has a price that must be paid in order to achieve it.  What have been some of the most profound difficulties, obstacles, learning hurdles, and financial lessons that Alec learned along the way toward CAPitalizing his own finances?  As an athlete, how was Alec able to develop a prudent mindset with his financial situation? And, being in such a competitive environment as a professional athlete, what techniques does he use to isolate his financial situation from other players so he can just be himself?

It doesn't matter whether you're a professional athlete, a business owner, or an employee working your way through your career, everyone has financial goals.  And we are all on our own journey to reach them.  The secret is to become addicted to the journey, not the destination.

Today's podcast with Alec Ingold dives into all of that - and much more!

I've been getting quite a number of questions from people who want to know about something called Environmental, Social, and Governance Investing - ESG for short.  It has to do with evaluating companies based on things like corporate climate policies, how they deal with pollution and waste, natural resource conservation, and if they are aware of things such as diversity, equity and inclusion, etc.

This type of investing isn't new; in fact, it's been around for almost 20 years.  ESG really took off around 2015, when investors, having been burned by the corporate malfeasance that led to the 2008 meltdown, had some extra funds to invest as the markets recovered.

So what's my take on all of this?  Is it really all it's cracked up to be?  I've got some insight that may surprise you (or not).

Have you ever thought about owning your own restaurant? Franchise?  Anyone who's familiar with the story of how McDonald's got started knows that a restaurant franchise can be profitable... extremely profitable, but is not without its risks.

My guest on today's episode, Tom Baldwin, is the hugely successful owner of Dark Side of the Spoon, which owns and operates some of the Midwest's most legendary bars and restaurants.  What was his business life story?  What were the risks he encountered, and how did he overcome them?  What advice would he give to aspiring restauranteurs, and franchise owners to capitalize on their success?

As the CAP in CAPitalize, I'm always curious about what successful people do, how they do it, and how their success may provide a road map for others to be successful as well.  How can other CAPitalizers do it?  Listen to today's podcast and find out more!

One of the things I enjoy doing the most is learning from successful people.  In fact, it's how I got started on my own CAPitalized financial career path.  On today's show I welcome one of my newest best friends: the highly talented and amazingly smart Rebecca Hotsko, host of the Millennial Investing Podcast.

The goal of any CAPitalizer is to have the confidence in themselves to make smarter financial decisions, and one of the ways to do that is to learn from those who have forged a path.  Rebecca's mission, much like mine, is to help people to make better financial choices and improve their financial literacy.

What did Rebecca wish she'd known when she first started investing?  How did running her own business affect the way she thinks about finance, and how is that applicable to other people?

On today's program I'm talking with one of my new best friends in the publishing business, the one and only Nicholas Hutchison, founder of BookThinkers. Nicholas is dedicated to building educational tools and social communities that anyone can use to fulfill their own potential.

This idea fits right into a CAPitalizer's niche!  As you know, a CAPitalizer is someone who's passionate about empowering people to bet on themselves and to be confident about every aspect of their financial life.  Nicholas has done exactly that, and in this episode we dive into how he started his business from scratch, the pitfalls that he encountered and had to overcome, and what advice he would give those who want to mirror his success.

It's a wonderful thing when you understand your current financial situation.  But as CAPitalizers, we know that there's a lot more to it than simply understanding.  We take it to the next level by examining every nook and cranny of where we are financially, and where we'd like to be.  We want to have confidence that we've set ourselves up and that we're not going to fail.

On today's episode I'm talking with the legendary comedian Fahim Anwar.   He's appeared on CONAN, LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS, has served as head writer and starred on a sketch show special for Comedy Central and has appeared multiple times on Joe Rogan's podcast.  Fahim has a very interesting story to tell about his upward climb through the ranks of the stand-up comedy world, how he juggled a daytime job and a nighttime act, and how he was ultimately able to pursue his dreams full-time by investing in himself.

How do you chase your passion in life while still being able to make it all work out financially?  Tune in and find out more!

This week's episode of CAPitalize Your Finances is going to be a bit different from what we've done in the past.  Normally I speak about an individual topic that's relevant to what all you CAPitalizers need to know or have guests on from all walks of life to enlighten you how to CAPitalize Your Finances, regardless of what path you choose.

This episode? CAP is answering YOUR questions!

As you might imagine, doing so often leads to follow-up questions from many of my astute listeners and subscribers.  Over the course of this past year, I've received dozens of emails asking about things like inherited IRAs, starting a 401k, paying off a loan, and much more, so for today's episode, we are going to focus on the retirement questions.

I'll be answering some of the most interesting retirement questions I've gotten.

You may have heard of "Private Equity," but how many people actually know what it is?  Terms like these are tossed around quite a bit in the financial industry, and that may or may not be a good thing.

A great CAPitalizer will always look to understand a particular investment before they throw their hard-earned money into it.  Today's episode focuses on not only the black-and-white definition of private equity, but also the different types you might encounter AND what you need to know before you dive into this type of investment strategy.

One of the best things I did this year was read "Richer, Wiser, Happier" by William Green.  This man has interviewed some of the best minds in finance today -- much like I've done here on CAPitalize Your Finances!

One of the things that struck me in reading this book was that happiness does not come from constantly wanting more.  He found that no matter what goals you're pursuing in your own life, you must first ask yourself this question: "Am I truly living richer, wiser, and happier?"  I wanted to get the word from the legend himself, and when I first connected with him, I not only got my answer...I got more than I could have ever imagined.

If all you own in life is money, are you truly rich?  How do you know when enough is enough?  Tune in to today's episode to hear my take on how you can CAPitalize on a Richer, Wiser, and Happier Life!

Economic cycles are a given: the economy grows, then slows, and then grows again.  Some call it the "economic pendulum," but that term is misleading -- a pendulum swings with regularity, whereas the economic swings happen seemingly at random, with little to no warning.

With that out of our control, we focus on what we CAN control: our reactions.  CAPitalizers know that when opportunity presents itself, we try to take full advantage.  And economic recessions do, believe it or not, offer us opportunities... and tons of them.

How can you try to CAPitalize on recessions?  Get the information you need to know on this week's episode of CAPitalize your Finances!

After nearly 15 years of historically low levels, interest rates have begun to come back up this year.  In response to inflationary pressures, the Federal Reserve has announced interest rate hikes across the board and has signaled that there may be more to come.

But just as there are ways to CAPitalize on Inflation (as I covered in my last episode), there are also ways to use higher interest rates to your advantage...many ways.  Specifically, there are certain types of investments that actually create potential benefits from an environment like this.

What are your options?  Tune in to this week’s episode and find out!

Let's face it: Inflation sucks.  You probably don’t need me to tell you this, but worldwide inflation has returned.  As the shock of Covid supply lines continues to reverberate, people have had to deal with inflationary pressures that we haven’t seen since the early 1980s.

While nobody likes rising prices (and for good reason), there are ways to cope with it – and even CAPitalize on it!

In today’s episode, I’ll give you some hints and strategies on what you can do to potentially lessen the impact of inflation, and avoid being on the wrong side of “Game Over.”

CAPitalizers! This episode I am coming at you with something completely different!  On today’s episode, we’re going to speak with Joyce Marter, the author of the international financial gem of a read, The Financial Mindset Fix. Joyce is a licensed psychotherapist with a lovely little niche in finance.  She also happens to be a national keynote speaker, corporate coach and successful entrepreneur that successfully sold her national therapy business for 8 figures, so it's safe to say she knows her stuff!

What makes today’s episode different, and why are we talking about this?  Unlike most episodes that are focused on the quantitative side of finance, I wanted to take some time to get into the qualitative side of things.  There seems to be a kind of financial mental health epidemic going on, and it’s hurting people both emotionally and financially.

By applying a mindful presence to such a stress-inducing topic like finance, we may be able to make more fiscally-responsible choices and learn to live in the present.

To become smarter, you need to hang out with really smart people.  That's why I'm so excited this week to bring you my special guest, legendary investor and award-winning New York Times best-selling author of "The Warren Buffett Way," Robert G. Hagstrom.

Investing is complicated.  Sometimes you don't know if you've made the right decision until long after it's too late.  This is what makes people like Warren Buffet so interesting, because you have the opportunity to use them as a kind of model of what could potentially be a much more successful investment strategy.

On today's episode, Robert Hagstrom and I will be talking about (among other things) "focus investing," something that Warren Buffet has practiced for many years now.  He'll tell you what focus investing is, how it works, and how almost any investor can apply it for themselves.

In our tech-heavy world, one where fortunes seem to be made mostly by people whose days are filled with bites and bytes, one of the less-heralded types of business in the 21st century is manufacturing -- also known as "blue collar" work.

And while they don't make big headlines, blue-collar businesses are the backbone of our economy.  There are opportunities to be had in these types of businesses, especially for those who look at themselves as a hands-on, build-it-yourself kind of person.

A good CAPitalizer will not ignore any aspect of business, which is why I'm speaking with the legendary Forbes columnist Jim Vinoski on this week's program.  What do you need to know in order to bring your blue-collar business from good to great?  Have a listen and find out!

But members of your family, and anyone else you may care about, will continue to carry on, and it's for those people that we conclude the CAPitalize Your Finances Framework with an episode about Legacy Planning.

We're coming down the home stretch!  Since Day 1, CAPitalize Your Finances has been all about a journey.  Yes, we've talked money specifics, we've talked strategy, and we've take several deep dives into the various aspects of personal finance that affect virtually everyone at one time or another.  But along with all of that, we've also traveled, you and I, through the labyrinth of what it means to be a CAPitalizer.

The common message through each episode has focused on you helping you.  In other words, what steps might you take to improve your financial situation and ultimately reach your goals?  As we set the stage for the episode that will round out the CAPitalize Your Finances Framework, I want you to begin thinking about what will happen when you're no longer around.

This is what we call Legacy Planning -- leaving your mark, financially, on those whom you care about the most.  Today's episode is in an introduction into what we'll cover next: CAPitalizing for future generations.  Get ready!

Most everyone loves a good guarantee, right?  This is especially true where retirement income is concerned.  The more guaranteed income you have, the less pressure there is on your portfolio to perform.

There are several options available to you when you're considering some type of guaranteed income.  The questions is this: who is making the guarantees?  And what are the conditions you have to fulfill in order to get them?

This week I take a deep dive straight into the different options you may want to consider.  Where might annuities fit into your plan (if at all)?  What about Social Security?  And how do you make sense of it all?  Learn all about it on this week's episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

Income in retirement – what a concept!  Actually, it’s more than a concept, it’s a vital part of life, whether you’re retired or not.  You won't live a very good life without some kind of income.  The more predictable and stable that income, the better.

As I said in my previous podcast, having and maintaining an income is a lot easier to do if you’ve got a process – a strategy – behind it.  This week, I’ll give you the details on that process, using actual (hypothetical) numbers to help illustrate how this income strategy works.

Believe it or not, CAPitalizing your income may be as easy as drawing three boxes on a piece of paper.  Does that sound crazy?  It’s true!  Tune in to this week’s informative episode and find out more!

Human beings have two distinct methods of thinking: the rational and the emotional. When it comes to finances, you're more likely better served by listening to the rational side; but the reality is that most people seem to make decisions based on the emotional side.

This can be a real detriment to retirement savings.  Jumping out of the markets after they've already dropped is a common reaction to fear, but quite frankly, it's probably the wrong move to make. So how do you dodge the emotional reactions and listen instead to the rational part of your psyche?

As any CAPitalizer will tell you it's a process -- a strategy -- that you need.  In today's podcast, you'll learn why this is the case, as well as exactly what kind of process I believe may work the best to avoid letting your emotions take over.  Tune in now, and CAPitalize your retirement!

One of the most important things that CAPitalizers learn early on is that short-term financial needs must be matched to short-term financial assets.  If you need your money to be there for you tomorrow, next month, or next year, you want it exposed to as little risk as possible.

Short-term investments are designed to trade rate of return for relative safety.  But what exactly is a short-term investment?  And how do you decide which one may be suitable for you?

Savings accounts, Money Markets, CDs, bonds -- these are just some of the many choices you have in the short term. Learn more about how they work and how to choose among them on this week's edition of CAPitalize Your Finances!

The common components of many investment portfolios are stocks, bonds and cash.  And that's fine, in many cases.  But sometimes, a little more is needed: what we often call "alternative investments."

One of those alternative investments may involve real estate.  As CAPitalizers, we understand the importance of knowing what our options are, how they work, and how to determine if they're suitable for us or not.  So how do we make that happen?

Enter my special guest today, Jason Gandy, head of acquisitions at the real estate development firm Sealy & Company.  What does Jason look for when it comes to the quality of real estate to buy?  What are the potential risks to consider?   how do you go about constructing a real estate portfolio?

These, and MANY other questions answered in my fascinating and educational conversation with Jason Gandy on today's episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

In today's conversation, Atticus will talk about what he looks for when evaluating which company stocks (and what types of businesses) he would like to buy.  Are things like a company's P/E ratio one of the main determinants, or do you have to look a bit deeper to see what's really going on?  What about cash flow?

All important questions, and we talk about this -- and a LOT more --  on this week's episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

Stocks, like them or not, are an integral part of most long-term investment strategies.  As CAPitalizers, it’s important to know what role they play, and why you need to consider them when planning for your financial future.

Of course, choosing which stocks or funds you should own is not an easy task.  How this is done – both qualitatively and quantitatively – is a specialty all its own.

My special guest for today, Atticus Lowe, is the co-manager and co-asset manager at 15 Equity and the author of “The Entrepreneurial Investor.” This is something he does every day.  What is his investment philosophy, and what does he look for in evaluating a company? When it comes to investing, you've got many choices -- perhaps TOO many!  How do you make sense of what types of investments are out there, and, more importantly, how do you decide which of these may be appropriate for you?

For the long-term investor (one with at least a 10-year time horizon), trying to sort through all of the options is a daunting task.  You want to make the right decisions, but your brain is turning to mush when figuring out which tools may provide you with the most success.

Fear not -- the CAP in CAPitalize is here to help!  On this week's installment of CAPitalize Your Finances, I'll take you through the stock market, which you can access through a mutual fund, an ETF or an individual stock.  Don't know the difference?  Even better!  I will also open your eyes to the interesting world of alternatives.  What is an alternative, you ask?  Set aside 20 minutes or so and the CAP in CAPitalize will set you straight.

Knowledge is power, what you'll learn today may help you immensely in the future!

This may or may not come as a surprise to some people, but there's more to investing than just putting money into stocks -- a LOT more.  Even combining just the simple, conventional "Stocks and Bonds" portfolio may not be enough to get you where you want to go.

It took the Big Crash of 2008 for me in the early days of my career to learn that the successful investors used more than just stocks, or stocks and bonds, when working on building their nest eggs.  And while not everyone needs to have a huge variety of investments, just knowing that other tools may be available to you is a big step forward.

Learn more about how I came to realize all of this, and how CAPitalizing your investments is so much more than just a slogan, on this week's episode of CAPitalize Your Finances!

I recently read a few online surveys regarding savings and investing, which I found to be rather astonishing.  The general tone of them all seems to suggest that far too many Americans have no household budget, and some have absolutely nothing saved for retirement!

What's also interesting (and pleasantly surprising) is that the average American also seems to have a rather large amount of free cash flow each month.  Whether you have a lot or a little doesn't necessarily matter; what matters is what you do with it.

Why "CAPitalize?"  And what does it mean?

On today's podcast, as we kick off Season 2, I want to focus on my personal history for a moment.  I'll give you my "back story," as they call it in the media biz, and how - and why - my life changed for the better just a few short years ago.

To capitalize means to take the advantage when it presents itself.   I struggled at an early age trying to figure out what my own personal strengths were.  Once they were made clear to me, though, I began to see just how much I could bring to the table - and I learned how to CAPitalize.

I'm Christopher A. Panagiotu, the CAP in CAPitalize; and this is where my story begins.

For nearly 30 years, we've been referring to the guideline that taking 4% from your portfolio may be the most optimal amount to keep you from running out of money over an average retirement.
