Abeng (A Novel) | Michelle Cliff | Postcolonialism | Jamaican Writers Description from Wikipedia: Abeng (Ä běng) is a novel related to Maroons, published in 1984 by Michelle Cliff. It is a semi-fictional autobiographical novel about a mixed-race Jamaican girl named Clare Savage growing up in the 1950s. It explores the historical repression resulting from British imperialism in Jamaica. Facts regarding imperialism of the island are dispersed throughout the narrative, as well as facts about slavery in Jamaica and Jamaican folklore. It is emphasized that the protagonists are generally unaware of these facts, which often serve to reveal the brutal nature of both slavery and imperialism. In this way Cliff reveals her intentions for the book. It is a piece of revisionist literature meant to challenge the mainstream narrative of Jamaican history. The character Clare Savage would return in Michelle Cliff's next novel, No Telephone to Heaven.

I mostly talk about the plot structure and the sue of Yoruba folktales by the author. Amos Tutuola. "The Palm-Wine Drinkard." https://amzn.to/2VYzk6A Description on Amazon: When Amos Tutuola's first novel, The Palm-Wine Drinkard, appeared in 1952, it aroused exceptional worldwide interest. Drawing on the West African Yoruba oral folktale tradition, Tutuola described the odyssey of a devoted palm-wine drinker through a nightmare of fantastic adventure. Since then, The Palm-Wine Drinkard has been translated into more than 15 languages and has come to be regarded as a masterwork of one of Africa's most influential writers. Tutuola's second novel, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, recounts the fate of mortals who stray into the world of ghosts, the heart of the tropical forest. Here, as every hunter and traveler knows, mortals venture at great peril, and it is here that a small boy is left alone.

Summary and Analysis: The Dragon Can't Dance By Earl Lovelace| Caribbean Writers| Postcolonialism Earl Lovelace’s The Dragon Can’t Dance is one of the finest Postcolonial novels set in the postcolonial Trinidad. Lovelace, in my opinion, is a chronicler of the Afro-Trinidadian culture and traditions, just as V. S. Naipual, another Trinidadian author, mostly represents the Indo-Trinidadian aspects of postcolonial Trinidad and Tobago’s national cultures. "The Dragon Can’t Dance" is set in the Calvary Hill, an urban slum and revolves around the lives of several Afro-Trinidadian characters with a special focus on Aldrick, the artist who plays the dragon in the annual Carnival tradition of Trinidad. Some Takeaways from Online Teaching During COVID 19 In this episode I share some of the lessons learned while teaching online during the COVID 19 pandemic. Please feel free to share the teaching strategies that worked for you. In my case my campus closed in march and we had to stay home and teach from home. I used my YouTube channel as a resource and also live-streamed my lectures. I think we all should mostly stay home and maintain social distancing to make sure everybody is safe. In my case, I stayed home for the first whole month and used the time ti prepare and deliver my lectures while my wife perfected the art of gluten free baking:)

What is Allochronic Discourse? | Postcolonialism | Johannes Fabian Allochronic discourse is a term coined and elaborated by Johannes Fabian, allochronism and originally referred to the practices in the field of anthropology, though it can be expanded very easily to apply to other cultural studies fields. Fabian first points out that a major flaw in Western anthropological studies is a “denial of coevalness,” which he terms allochrinism, under which not only the European studying subject observes his or her study objects, non-European others, in a different colonized space but that in this act of observation while both the ethnographer and his or her object exist in the same time, the ethnographer renders the object of study as if existing in another, past, time, thus stabilizing the present of Europe as the real time and plotting the objects of study in a past time. This happens even though the two participants in this exchange exist in the same serial time. A term coined by Edward Said in his magisterial work Orientalism. “Orientalism” is a way of seeing that imagines, emphasizes, exaggerates and distorts differences of Arab peoples and cultures as compared to that of Europe and the U.S. It often involves Orientalism in seeing Arab culture as exotic, backward, uncivilized, and at times dangerous. Edward W. Said, in his groundbreaking book, Orientalism, defined it as the acceptance in the West of “the basic distinction between East and West as the starting point for elaborate theories, epics, novels, social descriptions, and political accounts concerning the Orient, its people, customs, ‘mind,’ destiny and so on.” According to Said, Orientalism dates from the period of European Enlightenment and colonization of the Arab World. Orientalism provided a rationalization for European colonialism based on a self-serving history in which “the West” constructed “the East” as extremely different and inferior, and therefore in need of Western intervention or “rescue”. What are Nativism and Going Native?| Postcolonialism| Postcolonial Theory| Postcolonial Concepts In this episode I have combined soundtracks from two previously published videos so that the you can learn about Nativism and Going Native as two distinct and separate terms. Nativism: In postcolonial theory, nativism refers to the political and cultural retrieval, or attempts at it, by the colonized natives to assert the claims of their own culture against the one introduced by the colonizers. This retrieval is mostly seen as a sort of strategic essentialism and can often lead to puritanical interpretation of history. By and large, the term has a negative connotation. Going Native: Going native was used as a pejorative term to point to any Europeans wo, while living in the colonies, adopted the customs and habits of the natives. By far the most striking example of someone going native can be found in the character of Kurtz from Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness."
