The last session we had early June during the 62nd edition of The IT Press Tour with Phison presenting the Lonestar case study was a real trigger inviting me to think that I need to talk to the master of this project. And with the help of Phison, we secured the recording with Chris Stott, chairman, CEO and co-founder. We talked about the utopia this kind of project could represent in people's mind or let say the unrealistic idea it crystalizes. In fact, the reality is different they already did a mission so Chris shared lots of informations, what they develop, their partner ecosystem like Phison and why they chose Phison and the Pascari product line, what kind of services they offer, who need this and why they need it, the pricing and business model and of cours we conclude with the calendar of next phases. I hope you'll enjoy this episode, really unique approach. Merci Chris.
The 62nd edition of The IT Press Tour took place early June in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, California.

The LTO Consortium has made a significant step with the LTO-10 and a few vendors have announced its availability with, again, some disappointments as it offers only 30TB raw. If you consider the original roadmap it represents a big drop. I discuss all these points in this episode as tape is today only considered for archive and deep archive with a key advantage, its cost associated with its nature being a passive media. Enjoy.
Beyond classic annual Coldago Research End-Users Surveys I had the idea to collect, around the end of 2024, opinions and comments from the field asking only end-users about the most impacting data storage technologies in the first 25 years of the century. And we got amazing results, I let your discover the top 3 and if you insist I can even share the #4, #5 and #6. Enjoy.

With the 50th edition of The IT Press Tour, clearly we thought and wished to make a pause to record a special episode to share some numbers to measure the impact of The IT Press Tour on the industry. Started in June 2010, it continues to exist because it delivers value for vendors, press and organizers. Just a few of them 283 distinct companies met, 497 sessions, more than 1000 CxO, more than 22,000 press items... All good record numbers and it's not finished the 51t edition is approaching, we'll be in Berlin June 27 & 28 to meet 6 innovative European companies. Enjoy the listening.

And we finish by the list of products and vendors in each category. I hope you'll enjoy that episode, happy listening.
Gartner, the famous analyst firm, has published recently, April 26, 2023, a bizarre report entitled "Voice of the Customer for Primary Storage" reference G00752726 that clearly introduces a wrong definition of primary storage. The problem is that readers and subscribers to Gartner believe what is written but again this is not accurate. So when I read this document, I decided to record this podcast to participate to the right definition of primary storage. This is incredible, I let you read this report and then listen to this episode. Enjoy.
This episode is a recap of the recent European KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2023 organized in Amsterdam in The Netherlands in March. Storage was not really visible at the show, the topic is ignored by this community speaking a different language with DataStore... Enjoy.
I met Insurgo and Gavin Griffiths at the recent STS Conference in Tucson, Arizona. It was an interesting talk that is really different from others classic tape pitch. It invites me to think about an interview and we recently did it to dig into the different tape services offered by his company. We spoke about all this, the market, drivers and the future. Tape is here to last long, no doubt about it. I hope you will enjoy this episode, a bit different from ones I used to produce. Enjoy. Thank you Gavin.
The IT Press Tour was recently in Israel for the 4th time and globally for the 49th edition. It was, once again, a fantastic trip.
We met 8 companies playing in IT Infrastructure, Data Management, Storage and a few key other areas. By alpha order it was CTERA, Equalum, Finout, Pliops, Rookout, StorONE, Treeverse and UnifabriX. We met very interesting people, real innovators developing key technologies. Enjoy.
We met CTERA recently during the 49th edition of The IT Press Tour in Israel and we got great exclusive news with the new executive team as Oded Nagel was promoted CEO, Liran Eshel, moving to Executive Chairman and a few other moves and promotions. We spoke about these changes with Oded and covered some recent product news around ransomware, cloud routing, CTERA Direct or unified file and object storage. UnifabriX just joined the 49th edition of The IT Press Tour in Israel and it was the perfect opportunity to learn more about the team and what they do. They clearly belong and participate to the coming disruptive wave based on CXL - the Compute Express Link - that will change drastically how the data center resources are connected. So the idea to interview Ronen Hyatt, CEO and founder of UnifabriX, was the natural step moving forward. We did it and I took a great pleasure to speak with Ronen, I hope it will be the case for all of you as we understand the role of the company, what they develop, already sell and what they prepare. Enjoy this episode. Thank you Ronen.
Two recents news invites me to think about this episode, first Quantum who introduces a modern file and object storage solution based on share-everything model, full NVMe and disaggregated architecture. A very good news for the champion of secondary storage. And the second HPE for its GreenLake storage services that recognizes once again its incapacity to develop file and object storage product by themselves. They're completely naked on this. They pick VAST Data, this is a fantastic news for VAST Data and a disaster for Qumulo. I hope you'll enjoy this episode.
RAID is well known and mastered for all IT people especially infrastructure ones. But with the growing capacity of the HDD, the arrival of flash and SSDs, of course NVMe and the explosion of volume of data, RAID was and is under pressure. I see several new implementation, discovery of drawbacks and the confirmation of Erasure Coding we saw 2 decades ago with Isilon and more recently with large scale storage software like object storage. It's also the case for P2P, dispersed or decentralized storage that push the concept further. I met several players with new approach based on PCIe card, some implements GPU on it, it is the case for GRAID Technology, Nyriad or Pliops. As a technology component it plays a key role especially at scale. I hope you will enjoy the listening.
Tape was dead for some people but guess what tape is still there and even more present than ever with cyberattacks and ransomware pressure. LTO continues to flood the market and hyperscalers adopted tape libraries and use them at a new scale and pace. Vendors design new models specifically for them, it is the case for Quantum and IBM and we wait some offerings from Spectra Logic. LTO roadmap is published up to LTO-14 without any date of course. We even heard that some hyperscalers plan to develop their own tape library. We'll see as there is plenty of new things in the domain. Great. Enjoy your listening.
The Storage Technology Showcase restarted a few days ago in Tucson, AZ and it was for me the opportunity to visit La Mecqua, the IBM Storage Labs. It was good to meet peers and speak about key storage challenges at scale. The topic of the year was about "Engaging the Rising Generation of Storage Professionals" and we also learned plenty of things, one of these being the Vertical Market Failure. I made this recap, I hope you'll enjoy listening to it.
Two companies launched recently their SaaS applications backup service, HYCU and Asigra. HYCU chose The IT Press Tour end of January in California to unveil R-Cloud, a comprehensive solution to protect any SaaS applications and for Asigra SAASBackup it was more recent. Their products represent the market need for a new approach, it won't be acceptable to have point products protecting data for each SaaS service in addition to bare metal, VM, container ad other cloud-based services. The industry creates its own complexity and at the same time, it is a real opportunity for some new or existing players. I detail the requirement in this episode, introduce HYCU R-Cloud and Asigra SAASBackup and present their similarities and differences. I hope you will enjoy it, it's pretty short and right to the point.
Secondary Storage is hot, nothing new here, and new offerings appear, new players and some old technologies got modernized like optical and recent tape developments are interesting. Flash is coming to secondary storage to offer more than Active but Instant recovery or archive. Hyperscalers put pressure on tape library vendors to release special models for them. Energy is even more important today coupled with data reduction techniques and erasure coding to deliver high durability level. Object storage also is present in different flavors, S3 is the king of course, and appear with 8 vendors S3-to-tape, a sort fo modern VTL. I have to mention also projects around P2P, Decentralized, Dispersed, Blockchain, DNA, glass or holographic or even Piql with 35mm microfilm. I tried to cover all these in this episode, a dense one but I'm sure you will love it. Enjoy.
I wish to do this episode for quite some time, it is about the pattern I detected on the market several years ago and it has been confirmed over the years. This is about Storage Giants essentially developing Block storage products. These storage giants are DDN, Dell, Fujitsu, Hitachi Vantara, HPE, Huawei, IBM, Infinidat, Lenovo, NetApp and Pure Storage covering for me here the mid to high-end on-premises storage segment. And I found that 81% of them - 9 on 11 - confirm that statement. Enjoy the listening of this special tech talk.
Like every year I started an exercise to list Winners and Losers, in other words, who in terms of companies or product or technology made a positive impact on the industry and on the other side negative one. I tried to cover block, file and object storage, primary and secondary storage, Kubernetes, Cloud and SaaS, tape, optical, RAID, DPU... but also M&A, investments or bankruptcy. It's an interesting list and I'm sure you will enjoy it. Have fun.

I visited Liqid at his HQ on Broomfield, CO, last June for the 44th IT Press Tour and clearly I realized that something is happening. This team is shaking the server and infrastructure established positions. So this interview became obvious and we decided with Sumit Puri, CEO of Liqid, to record it during VMware Explore. We covered the genesis of the company, the business and IT need of composability, the market dynamism around Composable Disaggregated Infrastructure or CDI, how the product works, the various use cases, the partner ecosystem and go-to-market, the pricing and of course the future. Lots of informations, Sumit shared lots of very interesting points and we anticipate a rapid acceleration in the coming months. Enjoy the listening, it is a great one, thank you Sumit.
The recent Fujifilm Summit last June in San Diego was the perfect opportunity to share and discuss various industry directions regarding technologies, use cases and state of the art for long term data preservation. I had the privilege to attend this conference, deliver a keynote and meet other colleagues all involved in this key secondary storage domain. And what we learnt deserves an episode and I've jut made it in less than 10 minutes. I spoke about primary versus secondary storage, tape, LTO-9, its disastrous roadmap, the Fujifilm/IBM 580TB tape project, hyperscalers needs and challenges for the industry, HDD, Flash, active and instant archive, optical, glass, holographic and DNA Data Storage. Enjoy the listening.
I met SpeeDB during the recent 43rd edition of The IT Press Tour in Israel and realized that this team is working on something big, a new storage engine that replaces RocksDB, the open source one invented by Facebook. It is used by hundreds of thousands of database worldwide and they all suffer sooner or later by performance and scalability limitations and therefore see the associated cost increase to address these limitations. So I decided to interview Adi Gelvan, CEO and one of the 3 co-founders of SpeeDB, we spoke about the genesis of the project, how the engine works, the use cases and already deployed configurations, the go-to-market strategy and pricing model and as well their cloud and Kubernetes approach. We conclude by some elements of the future with some interesting directions. I let you discover this episode, a very interesting one, enjoy and thank you Adi.
Pleasure and honor for me to have this very interesting talk with Fred Moore, President of Horison. We had a very open discussion around multiple topics, of course the market, its climate and trends, some technologies, the famous disappointing LTO roadmap, the Fujifilm - IBM project with a 580TB tape cartridge, HDD and even Flash in archive, his famous storage pyramid, Hyperscalers needs and pressure, but also best practices and projects to follow and future directions. A super episode once again, I hope you'll like it as I took pleasure to record it. Enjoy.
Kalista is a young player founded by Albert Chen dedicated to optimize storage and especially SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) based storage infrastructure. We met Albert inJanuary during the 41st edition of The IT Press Tour and I found this approach super interesting wishing to dig more.
New episode and a new angle for the podcast with today a summary of the last 3 IT Press Tour editions we had in January, March and April in California and Israel meeting in total 29 companies playing in IT Infrastructure, data and storage management, business and IT applications. Here is the list of companies we met during each of these 3 tours:
A new interview, this time with Simon Taylor, Founder and CEO of HYCU, a Modern Data Protection vendor that addresses the recent IT challenges and needs aligned with the cloud and new workloads. In this interview we covered the genesis of the company, even if Simon didn't mention pedigree and background of the origins of the company, the surprising new meaning of the HYCU acronym, it is not the same explanation today than the one given a few years ago, the HYCU cloud strategy, of course Protégé and some other key features, go-to-market approaches and partnerships that makes HYCU a pretty unique vendor. Enjoy your listening and Thank you again Simon (and Don).
A real pleasure to talk to Piyush Mehta, CEO of Data Dynamics, about the company Data Management strategy in a very dynamic market climate. The company leverages a largely deployed product named StorageX and added more recently other key modules such as ControlX and Insight AnalytiX to provide a holistic unified data platform dedicated to orchestrate unstructured data within the enterprise residing within companies' perimeter but also in the cloud. Enjoy your listening and Thank you again Piyush.
Really glad I have the chance to discuss again a few days ago with Boyan Ivanov, CEO and co-founder of StorPool Storage, a Bulgarian storage software company. I identified this company many many years ago in 2014 when I unveiled the product to the world with a famous blog post. StorPool is one of the rare pure block Software-Defined Storage on the market proposing a radical new approach for high performance high resilient storage. If you don't know StorPool yet, I encourage you to test the product, you would probably adopt it right away. In the meantime, I invite you to listen to this very interesting episode covering a really attractive company and product. Enjoy your listening and Thank you again Boyan.
The volume of data explodes for everyone, from large corporations to individual users, especially pro-consumers with strict requirements such performance and resiliency. Iodyne rethinks this approach with the Pro Data, a 15" 12 or 24TB block storage array fully equipped with M.2 SSDs directly connected to Mac machines. I recorded this episode a few days ago at Iodyne HQ in Mill Valley, CA with Jeff Bonwick and Mike Shapiro, co-founders and co-presidents, to understand the root of the project, the nature and design of the product and various key features like the data protection model. You probably remember these names form past key industry products as they invented ZFS, FISHworks and DSSD. I invite you to listen to this very interesting episode covering a real compelling product initiative. Enjoy your listening and Thank you again Jeff and Mike.
Distributed enterprise is a reality and Covid period has demonstrated a new iteration of strong need for such approach. I had the privilege to speak to a technologist I respect a lot, Andres Rodriguez, founder and now CTO of Nasuni. For some of you who follow me and the industry, Andres was the founder in 2003 of Archivas, a distributed, CAS/object storage software, acquired in 2007 by Hitachi and it's now HCP. Nasuni, launched in 2009, tackles a completely different problem, how to provide a universal NAS model to any users, local or remote, from the same data source being central on-premises or public object storage. This model merges primary and secondary storage and deliver a pretty unique user experience on the market. We talked about all of this with Andres, the genesis of the project, the philosophy of the product, a bit of technology, use cases and differentiators around several key things like ransomware protection, caching techniques, global locking and versioning to name a few. Enjoy your listening and Thank you again Andres.

Very interesting dialog with Krishna that contributes to the discovery of one of the few gems of the storage and data management market. Enjoy your listening and Thank you again Krishna.
Merci Erfane.
Real pleasure to interview Eran Kirzner, CEO and founder of Lightbits Labs, being a pioneer of NVMe/TCP and the original believer, designer and developer of the TCP transport for NVMe. The momentum is now visible with some validations and adoptions by several giant vendors to initiate a tsunami. A good example is the recent validation of NVMe/TCP by VMware under the last iteration of ESXi. We learn more about the roots of the company, the original triggers of the project and other key information such financial trajectory. So a lot of good answers from Eran with the pleasure to have also Philippe Schwartz, partner at Square Peg Capital, who believes strongly in Lightbits Labs since the beginning of the project. Enjoy your listening and Thank you again Eran and Philippe.
Great honor to interview Renen Hallak, CEO and founder of VAST Data, a recent storage player who disrupts the market with an innovative high performance and high resilient unstructured data platform. This episode tells us more about the genesis of the company, the design goals and how they succeeded to deliver such advanced product. Plenty of good information shared by Renen, so I invite you to listen to it and share it among your contacts and friends. Enjoy and Thank you Renen.
I had the privilege to interview Nathan Thompson, CEO and founder of Spectra Logic, to get an update of his company, their strategy especially at the moment they just announced a new data management software solution named Vail aligned with a significant refresh of their "classic" products line fueled by several security and ransomware prevention features. Lots of information as usual with Nathan who really makes this interview a simple and direct exercice, Thank you Nathan.
