Come along as we vent our spleens about events of the day.
We'll discuss subjects as diverse as why Brexit caused a fuel shortage in Lebanon. Which politician could best serve their countries by retiring? Why 9mm versus .45 ACP is the wrong question. How, after 116 years of business, Harley Davidson has only just started making decent motorcycles? Electricity is cool but are batteries really the future? Do women even like men anymore?
In truth we're just 3 people with disparate backgrounds and experience trying, in good faith, to use those differences to make sense of this mad mad mad world
Today, for...reasons, we're talking about the Spanish Civil War. The boys promised me that we'd get to the modern contextual reasons for this, but time constraints and our pathological need for digression have insured that there will be a part 2. Be warned.

In this, our second episode of the weekend, we talk about the recent attempted assassination of Donald Trump and it's wider repercussions. We ponder about whether the truth of the shooter's motivations will even matter as the story unfolds and evolves. Will the truth even be a part of what will eventually become the mainstream narrative of the event.

This weekend its a 2 for 1 special with Paddy and Trent talking football. We've got more of the normal fare coming up next.
Hello everyone. Sorry for the long break between podcasts, but it's been a real bear to get everyone together. This week we have a returning guest and an ailing host, but we manage to make it work. We welcome back John for another discussion on Ukraine as well as the conflict between Israel and Gaza. As always please send questions, comments and concerns to complicatedpod@gmail.com.

https://youtu.be/gmuj5gDsxJI?si=9G6_BnQipvgG9YK-
Then we talk a little about the history of leftists overthrowing other leftists and Paddy treats us to an interesting description of where he thinks Pinochet sits on the political spectrum
Finally Trent announces his intent to defect, at least when it comes to voting. Frankly, we're worried about him.

Once again, as is our wont, you join us in the middle of a conversation. We start off with a short discussion about the credibility of state media enterprises which was inspired by some curious editorial choices in this BBC documentary piece.
https://youtu.be/Z51MTI9sbFY?si=8OMjHXbA4P9dopMx
From there we touch on hypocrisy, how the US federal system is uniquely able to tolerate 3rd parties so why doesn't it, and some of our dream reforms to the Canadian system of government.
Afterwords there's a lament that refugee's from the problems of BC are coming to Alberta without understanding that it's their politics that created the problems in BC.

Apologies for the long delay in getting this episode out, but one of us almost died. In this episode, we try to highlight how much legislation with concerning authoritarian potential consequences the Canadian Federal Government has passed in the last few years. We mostly end up focusing on some recently introduced legislation with the most obvious dystopian consequences. We hope you are edified, if not entertained.

Today was Trent's chance to to take shots at the wack-a-doodle right, and he failed miserably. That was probably because Steve and Paddy kept feeding him a steady diet of crap from the wack-a-doodle left. Paddy and Steve try to make up for it by taking their own shots at Tucker and other ignoramus's on the new right, before the conversation diverts into why Trump is popular. Our final diversion has us looking past a defeat for Ukraine and what that could possibly mean for Europe going forward.

The regular scheduled episode of Radio Free Ortona had to postponed this week do to illness. In its place we present another of our behind the scenes clips episodes. Topics include a rehash of our not at all confusing nautically themed political spectrum. Why some countries drive on the wrong side of the road. Left handed presidents. Why do all tyrants seem to come from the middle class.
All that and a little bit more on another Episode of Radio Free Digression.

Today we're talking about the recent events in Israel and Gaza with a focus on reactions to it in the west. We ponder where all the open antisemites came from, and whether they seem to be clustered on one side of the ideological divide. We talk a little bit about whether the impetus for this attack came from within or outside of Gaza, and who benefits from it, because frankly, we don't see how Hamas or Gazans do. We also talk a little bit about the military situation and what a ground incursion into Gaza by the IDF would look like. Please give it a listen.

Today we're talking about the massive shift in demographics of the developed world. Simply put, we're not having enough kids and our societies are threatened as a result. Shrinking populations means serious economic woes ahead as smaller generations of children will be unable to support the benefits promised to their parents, and this problem gets worse as subsequent generations become smaller and smaller. We try to figure out where this will lead, but as normal, this isn't the place to come for answers, just more questions

We're finally back for another live episode. It's a typically wide ranging episode, where we start with the what seems to be the latest front in the culture war, that being Oliver Anthony's song Rich Men North of Richmond. We move from there to a Substack article by N.S. Lyons where he talks about the current social upheaval (also the name of his Substack) as a war between Physicals and Virtuals. For clarification that article can be found here:

There's some media criticism and then we get back to our roots by arguing vociferously about the essential nature of capitalism. Then we wrap it all up with some discussion of the Hollywood writers strike. We hope you enjoy.

Hello everyone. It's been a longer hiatus than we'd have liked, but Radio Free Ortona is back with a continuation of our discussion on the utility of the conceptual models of the political spectrum. Paddy starts off by completely discarding our well thought out and not at all confusing 2 axis nautical model that we gifted the world with in our previous discussion. Instead we really try, and utterly fail, to get down to brass tacks on this issue. We hope you enjoy the episode.
Here's the link to a picture of the bingo card spectrum we stumbled upon in our quest to find visual conceptualizations of what we were talking about. You can refer to it, when we're talking about it in the episode.

Sorry for the delay between podcasts folks, but podcasting seems to have been preempted by the World Cup, Craft Sales, and the general business of the lead up to Christmas. We're hoping to get together and record another episode before Christmas, but we can make no guarantees. In our stead is another of our cynical attempts to feed the algorithm, in the form of an assemblage of our pre and post show conversations. Sorry for talking with our mouths full. Our moms taught us better.

Thanks for tuning in to our 10th episode of Radio Free Ortona. As the title says, this is another glossary episode where we just try to figure out what we mean when we talk about the right or left wings of the political spectrum. In the process we invent an entirely new and not at all confusing nautical model of the political spectrum, in an attempt to separate the concepts from potentially inflammatory language. It was a tremendously interesting exercise for us, and we hope it's something that you will find useful as well.

Thanks for tuning in to Episode 9 of Radio Free Ortona. First off, apologies for the length of time it took to get this episode out. And apologies for jumping right into it. Paddy walked into the room and started in on the topic before your intrepid producer had pushed the record button, so it starts mid sentence.
In this episode, we continue our discussion of why capitalism seems to be unpopular with young people these days. Steve puts on his tin foil hat and goes after central bankers. We pause to express our mutual admiration of The Clash. And other digressions. Hope you enjoy.

In this episode, we talk about the Queen, and what she means to us. How hard it is going to be to adapt referring to the King, when it's been the Queen for all ours and our parents lives. After that we move onto a meandering discussion of why kids these days don't like capitalism, despite it being responsible for their standard of living.

Soon after we started this thing, I started hitting the record button as soon as everyone was in the room. This episode is an assemblage of clips from conversations we had before and after the actual podcast. Some of these conversations are preparatory to future episodes and some of them are completely unrelated to anything else. I hope you find them as interesting as I think they are. Because we're not specifically speaking for the podcast we're a lot more sweary and definitely NSFW. You've been warned. Also I'm not always as good as I should be at hitting record right away, so on a couple of these clips you come in after the conversation has started. Things become clear soon enough.

In this episode we try to conclude our series on gun control and it's effects. It went longer than any of us expected and as always is full of digression. Also it got a little more sweary than normal. Steve yells at Trent. Paddy names people he'd rather were Prime Minister in iambic pentameter. Trent expresses his disdain for Jordan Peterson's most frequent podcast guest.

Today we take on Good Faith. The three of us certainly agree that there's a real lack of it in public discourse. The proper functioning of our western liberal democracies and indeed our societies, seem to depend on good faith to continue functioning in good order. What does the death of good faith mean for us going forward? Will we be able to function as free societies if good faith is lost completely? Please listen in as we fail to answer these and other questions about whether or not good faith is dead or just on life support.

Welcome to the inaugural episode of Radio Free Ortona. We're 3 people with some stuff in common and some stuff that gives us different perspectives, which is why there's 3 of us instead of 1 of us. We know that the sense making infrastructure is broken, and 3 middle aged bald assholes aren't going to fix it. But maybe we can, in our own small way, contribute to helping everyone try to make sense of the world. The binary nature of most mainstream narratives is woefully inadequate for understanding any issue. Our hope is to explore the issues of the day and discover their complex depths. Hopefully we can relay some of this complexity to you. We're not going to lie to you, if you came here looking for answers, you're in the wrong place. We don't have any. But if we hash this stuff out long enough, we might at least come up with some better questions. This week we try, and mostly fail, to figure out what's wrong with higher education. Are students being served by what they're being taught at today's institutions of higher learning? Is society? What happens when you create a class of highly-educated under-employed people with five and six figure debt loads and few prospects for being able to earn enough to pay that off.
