La Mansarda, an amazing cultural events company is organising a fantastic festival this Saturday the 27th of July at Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin. It's an amazing opportunity to enjoy some performances from wonderful artists and at the same time get to meet people from all over the world who are based in Dublin.
I loved the idea of this festival and decided to interview some of the artists performing on the day. This episode is a conversation with Santierra & Los Protones Errantes. Incredible musicians who perform in their native tongue and can bring any room to life. We chatted about their musical journey in Dublin and how they ended up performing together.
The revenue from the ticket sales will be equally split: half to support the arts, therefore for artists performing, and half to support EMERGENCY NGO.

Their creativity and love for what they do is infectious and I loved chatting to them about all things Napoli and Dublin. This is a good one if you want to practice your Italian!

In this episode of the podcast we were joined, for the second time by Harry Hudson Taylor. Harry came to fame in his teens with the band Hudson Taylor but is now embarking on his solo career under the guise of Lady Bird Lad.
I found this chat really inspiring. Harry is a guy who doesnāt give up, who knows what it takes to make something of themselves and is incredibly honest about the ups and downs that come with that type of journey. Whether youāre moving to a new country for a fresh start, trying to start a little business or side hustle, or looking to follow a passion, I recommend having a listen to what Harry has to say. Thereās wisdom there and I for one was able to take quite a lot from this.

Todayās episode is a little bit different in the sense that the tables were turned and it is an interview I did on the Mick McDermott podcast. Mick, who is a brilliant podcast host, is currently travelling around Ireland in his camper van, which he also lives in! He was kind enough to invite me into his humble abode for a chat and go into detail on my experiences living abroad and how that experience changed my life. I must admit, Iām not sure if it was the coffee I had before hand, or the amazing interview skills of Mick, but I spoke an awful amount of shite towards the end of this conversation, but it was all in good fun and thankfully Mick didnāt throw me out of the van!

Over the course of the last year, Iāve had the pleasure of talking to so many different people from all over the world. Theyāve made me laugh and even sometimes cry but ultimately our guests have inspired me and taught me a much more beautiful perspective on life.
Next year in 2024, I hope to continue the A Life in Dublin project, but to push it a little bit more so that it is benefitting as many people as possible. Our events that we run on a monthly basis have been incredible and I think the presence of a safe social space in Dublin, for people from all backgrounds is more important than ever. And I want this to be done in an Irish way. A way in which we can celebrate being in Ireland whilst at the same time celebrating the multicultural nature of Dublin as well. Iām excited about what is to comeā¦ and I hope you can stick with me on this journey to see where it ends up!

Around about a year ago I found out that Arthur Guinness, famed creator of the black stuff, got married in the former church, current restaurant and bar, located on Mary Street in Dublin 1. Despite my many visits to this bar, I had no idea of this little piece of history which happened right in Dublin City Centre. I learned this from todayās guest Ross and Iāve subsequently learned all sorts of random and interesting facts about Irish culture and Irish history from his amazing page on Instagram.
In this chat we learn a little more about the man behind the content and his journey which led him to take such an interest in history and his passion for sharing it with us all. This conversation is a recording of myself and Ahmed who is from Egypt. Much to my envy, Luiza has lived in far-flung places all over the world. China, Australia, Italy amongst many others. In this chat I talk to Luiza about her experiences travelling the world, which includes following strangers to very remote islands for work, and how she ended up living here in Dublin. Alan Corcoran ran 35 marathons in 35 consecutive days and then swam the length of Ireland. As you can imagine, there were a lot of ups and downs on this journey for Alan and in this chat I talk to him about what motivated him to start these brutal physical and mental challenges and also what gave him the encouragement to keep going, despite at times, nearly everyone and everything going against him.

Todayās episode is a conversation about a man whose impact on the world will be spoken about for generations to come. Letās start with the image of a man who basically vanished off the face of the earth for a number of years before he finally reappeared walking across the border from China to Vietnam with no possessions and essentially no identity. This man went on to garner a huge following and fought a revolution in his Country that had repercussions internationally. The man I speak of Ho Chi Minh.
My friend Nghia, a Vietnamese stand-up comic, spoke to me about the life and character of the person who had a number of different names in his life but became known as Ho Chi Minh, or the enlightened one. We avoid talking too deeply about politics in this conversation as I was more interested in learning about the type of person who could achieve such things in his life.

Ireland has been an independent country for just over one hundred years now and in that time perhaps we as a nation have looked to both the US and the UK in terms of how to structure and develop our society. Some might say, that in doing so, we have lost a bit of our own cultural identity and so the question is what does it truly mean to be Irish?
Mollie, our guest today, teaches the Irish language online and has over 100k followers on Instagram. We talk about why the Irish language is such a dividing topic in Ireland, itās huge cultural significance and whether or not it might be the key to unlocking the true Irish identity.

Ligia from Italy is the personification of a selfless person. She spends her days working as an intensive care nurse and in her spare time organises events to promote artists from all backgrounds and cultures to raise money for different charities. I wonāt say much more other than I personally find her an inspiration and that Dublin is without doubt a better place because of her presence here.

Brian McMahon comes from Dundalk in County Louth, just north of Dublin. 13 years ago, not so long after Brianās father passed away, he digitalised a family photograph from the 1960ās, and to his delight was amazed by the quality of the newly digitalised image but also the nostalgia that he had managed to encapsulate online. Since then, Brian has digitalised over 3000 images, adverts and articles of Dublin and Ireland, posting them on his blog; Brand New Retro or in his monthly column in Totally Dublin magazine.
For a long time Iāve wanted to talk to someone about how the culture of Dublin has changed and evolved over the years, and when I got to know Brian, I thought he was the perfect guy to speak to. We chat about music, nightlife, opportunities and a lot more.

Many of you who are Irish and enjoy sport will know of my next guest from his hurling days in county Wexford. For those listening from outside of Ireland or for those who arenāt so familiar with hurling, itās one of Irelandās national sportās. Itzi arrived in Dublin from Mexico 5 years ago not really knowing what to expect from Ireland. Like so many, she hadnāt really heard much about Ireland before and had actually considered Australia as a more viable option for her adventure abroad. Flash forward five years and Itziās life has changed quite a lot. No longer working as an industrial engineer, sheās created a career for herself as a digital creator, providing her community with information about Ireland and how to move here.

In this episode we are joined by the incredible Pablo and The Foreigners. Angelica, Javier, Juan and Pablo (aka Paul) were brought together in the city of Dublin by their shared passion for music. Despite all coming from very different backgrounds, Argentina, Spain, Italy and Ireland, they formed their community and without doubt have made the most out of their time here. I take inspiration from their story as they are an amazing example of people who put faith in their passion and allowed it to blossom into wonderful friendships and without doubt some amazing memories that they will have for the rest of their lives.
If itās true that at the end of it all, the only thing we are left with is the memories we have created, then I choose to look up to these guys as my example. At the end of the episode you will hear five songs from these very talented musicians. We definitely count ourselves as extremely lucky as we had our own little private concert! Can you think back to a time when you were younger or perhaps in more recent times when you had to stand up in front of a group of people and perform something? Whether it be a poem, a song, a presentation or whatever it is, holding your composure doesnāt come easy to us all. In fact, Im sure we can all admit that weāve suffered from nerves at some point in our lives. This is what fascinates me about talking to people like Colm. A professional musician whoās toured all over the world, and yet he to admits to experiencing the odd bout of performance anxiety. What was really refreshing about my chat with Colm was that he doesnāt put overcoming this anxiety down to increased self-esteem or weāll say, mental tricks, he puts it all down to hard work and discipline. Practice until itās more difficult to make a mistake than it is to perform perfectly. I really admire this about Colm and other performing artists. Itās so easy to forget the countless hours that goes into what can seem like an effortless performance. Colm tells me more about where this discipline comes from and heās fostered it. We also chat about Dublin and Ireland and how these places have shaped him as a musician and many other topics.

Sometimes when we think of a place we can have preconceived notions of what that place may or may not be like. Whether itās pictures of sunny beaches, war, famine, economic prosperity or horrific poverty, our perspective of a place is usually tainted by the images and narratives that are fed to us in the media. Perhaps Lebanon is victim to this phenomenon and so when I met Fouad and Samar I jumped at the chance to chat to them so that I could learn more about their background and what it means to be Lebanese. Of course, we talk about how they have ended up here in Dublin as well but selfishly I pressed to know and learn more about Lebanese culture and life.Ā

Irelandās biggest ever rock band, U2,Ā released one of their most iconic albumās, entitled War, way back in 1983. To commemorate the 40 year anniversary of this album myself and Eoin decided to have a chat about the album itself and U2 in general.Ā
Somehow or another we got a little bit off topic and started asking ourselves who has aged better, Bono or Tom Cruise but we did get a good grip on what the album War meant for U2 and how it propelled them into the stadium rock legends that they inevitably became.

Annie arrived in Dublin from Berlin in 2019 to study a masters in creative writing. Luckily she was able to enjoy Dublin in all of its vibrancy for 6 months before we had to batten down the hatches and enter lockdown. We donāt talk about the C word or what that experience was like for Annie as I think we all know the answers to those type of questions. We do, however, chat about what life has been like since the rebirth of society in early 2022. Annie tells us about her processes as an artist, primarily a poet and how she has found a community of like minded creatives here in the City. Every now and then we meet people who are different. Different in a way that you can say to yourself, Iām so happy I had the chance to meet this person, because, from a very selfish point of view, the time I spent with them made me feel good about myself and about those around me. Luke is one of those people. We met at one of our live podcasts where we were lucky enough to enjoy some of his music, but also the energy he creates when he plays. After spending some time in Paris, Madeline decided to make the move to Dublin thanks to a good job offer, but most of all, because it represented a new adventure. She made sure the adventure didnāt stop once she arrived on Irish soil though, as she rediscovered her passion for acting and subsequently began performing stand-up comedy here in the capital City. We delve into her creative process and what motivates her as a writer, an actor and a stand-up comic. She tells us about her time growing up between New York, Connecticut and Austin and we chat a little bit about how Ireland relates to other countries. As a pre-warning, this episode did not come without itās technical difficulties. Towards the very end of our conversation my laptop died a sudden death only to be revived again by the incredible invention of a charger. Vanesa moved to Dublin 8 years ago from her hometown just outside of Barcelona. We chat about why she decided to come to Ireland and more importantly what has stayed her here for so long. Last night we had our first ever live podcast. Itās hard to believe that this podcast has even gotten to the point where we could do something like this but the stars aligned and a lot of different people helped us and made it happen for us. He did this on numerous occasions, whether it was the time he left Brazil for Ireland, the time he left a secure job to pursue his passion of acting, or even, later on, the time he left a steady acting job in Fair City to further push himself and his skills in his chosen field of acting. The nature of pursuing your dream is often earmarked with moments of doubt, anxiety, stress, joy, failure and success. He tells us how he deals with all of these emotions in a way that enables him to keep moving forward towards his goals.
Thales arrived in Dublin in 2017 and like so many who have arrived on these shores, has had many ups and downs throughout his journey here. Thales has a unique perspective on life and his ability to get through hard times whilst still maintaining a positive and focused attitude is something which I personally find very inspiring. On top of this heās one of the hardest workers Iāve ever met. Celeste is an actor from Venezuela who came to Europe in 2019. Her story reflects the times of crisis which exist in Venezuela but also how friendship and community can be reason for hope. Her way out of Venezuela was a ticket bought for her by her cousin, who was living in England at the time. Celeste received a message from her cousin which read, I donāt know what youāre gonna do, but I bought you a ticket and youāre leaving to Europe in 3 days. Filipe from Brazil joins us on the podcast this week. Heās a very well-known guy in the Brazilian community abroad as he is the host of The Bolder podcast, which has almost 15k subscribers on YouTube. Heās spoken to so many Brazilians living here in Ireland and heās now expanding the reach of his interviews to the Brazilian community around Europe as well as Ireland. We talk about many things, including what his expectations of Ireland were before he moved here back in 2011, the difficulties faced by people forced to study English in order to have a visa even if their English is perfect, the tragic death of Thiago Cortes and violence towards Delivery drivers and advice that Filipe would give anyone who is thinking to move to Ireland in 2023. Jess initially came to Ireland, despite not knowing a lot about it, to learn English and to improve her career opportunities. As she researched more about Ireland she got more and more excited about her life here but she became disheartened when she learned that she would not be permitted to work in her profession (Robotics - control and automation) due to the fact that she could only attain a work (part-time) and study Visa. Despite these difficulties, she kept her dream front and centre in her mind. Her success, like many stories of success, did not happen in a straight line. She lived through many ups and downs and thought of giving up on numerous occasions. Her story highlights how difficult it is for people who move to Ireland from outside of the EU to work in something which they are qualified to do, and along with that comes many of the psychological and financial stresses. Thankfully, Jess has now attained a working Visa which has allowed her to a get a great job with a multi-national company here in Dublin. If you need inspiration and an example of someone who has managed to create a good life for themselves in Ireland despite many bureaucratic issues, we throughly recommend giving this episode a listen. It was an absolute pleasure to talk to Tom and to learn about his life story so far. He tells us about his childhood growing up on a farm in Zimbabwe and his travels around world. He worked on a super yacht in Southeast Asia as a dive instructor and got on really well with the Irish doctors onboard the boat. For that reason, he decided to change his scenery completely and move to Dublin as he thought he might really enjoy it. He began studying law here in Ireland (and apparently really enjoys Irish law!) and is now working as a barrister. He's a great character and I must say that this one is well worth the watch. Enjoy!
