Sometimes we sit and we think too much about what we want to do or what we’re going to do. It’s then that the voices come and tell you that you can’t do it. Sometimes you actually start listening to those voices that are coming to keep you from moving forward and doing the things that god called you to do. I would hear the voices – I wouldn’t tell anyone – but I would sometimes entertain them to the point where I wouldn’t move forward to do what God called me to do.
The Bible tells us to pull down strongholds, pulling down every thought and every imagination that exalts itself above the word and the knowledge of god. Because I know the word, when the thoughts begin to come, as a Christian woman, it is my job to pull those thoughts down because I know those thoughts are not from god. It doesn’t stop the thoughts from coming but it charges me to do what I know to do, and that’s to pull down every thought.
I’ve been writing songs for years, god has gifted my songs since I was a young woman. I didn’t have a gift or a talent, I would just hear it – the songs and the lyrics. I hear it in my spirit because I hear it from within. I get quiet before the lord and all of a sudden I start hearing words and I start writing, later I come back after I’ve heard everything to perfect everything that I heard.
When I connected with Dr Sonya and the women at Disrupting The Status Quo, it was as if the baby inside of me began to leap. When we came together it was like a wind at our back or an opening that took place inside of me to complete some things that god had already given that I hadn’t gone forth with. Divine connections started taking place and I started meeting people who could help me with things and it was almost as if everything that I started putting in my hand had a motion going. It literally was the wind in my back that caused me to move forward, it’s amazing!

A lot of people don’t realise how vulnerable kids can be, we often think that kids aren’t around and listening – believe me, they are! When I was around 14 years old my aunts were in the kitchen discussing me, but not in a positive manner. They were saying that I wasn’t going to amount to anything and I may not even graduate high school. I never thought these things would come out of the mouths of people who say they love you.
I had been given away by my mother when I was 2 weeks old to be raised by another family. So, I’d already gone through rejection and abandonment, so you cling to those who you think love you and those you think you can trust. After the hurt and thinking “what’s so bad about me?” After hearing them speak about me, I wanted to deny it, but I couldn’t because they were right there. I had to digest that at that age and I eventually got to a place of saying “no, that does not define who I am”, and I set out to make them a liar.
This catapulted me to even where I am today, as a breast cancer survivor. When you get a diagnosis that doesn’t define who you are, you have to make the choice of are you going to fight or are you going to give up? I fought then, I’m cancer free since 2010, I refuse to believe anything else and I refuse to believe that I couldn’t be somebody, that I wasn’t worth having a company, being a director, going to get my Master’s Degree, now working on my Doctoral Degree. I couldn’t allow the negativity to suffocate me to where I couldn’t be living on purpose.
There is purpose in each one of us. You have a purpose, you have a desire. If you say you’re an artist, go be an artist, go take a class, there are free classes, we’re out of excuses as to why we can’t live, why we can’t live with purpose, why we can’t be happy. Some of us are living, but we’re not actually living. We’re living to survive, we’re living for other people, we’re living to feed our families, but you're not actually living and able to enjoy life. That’s where I am now.

Over the years – the last half a century or so – I’ve learned that a lot of the time you don’t even know what you’re capable of, life comes at you, you don’t know how to deal with it. Learning how to cope with obstacles and challenges is part of the journey.
When I was 4-years-old I had a twin brother and I remember a day when my mother took us to the doctor for a check-up. I was sitting on the floor playing with some toys when the doctor came out saying something to my mother. I didn’t recall it for years, but what he told her was that one twin would have intellectual properties and the other wouldn’t be sufficient in that arena. My mother asked him which one that was and he pointed at me. He counted me out before I even had an opportunity to start life. That was reiterated by kids on my street when we’d play outside, I’d hear “she’s a cute little girl but she’s dumb”. That set my mindset for years, I didn’t push the envelope because I felt I was incapable.
I went through postpartum depression after having my second daughter. If you’ve ever been through depression it’s debilitating, you can’t function, it takes your mindset, you can’t manoeuvre, there’s nothing you can do about it. When I finally got to feeling better, 6 months later, I looked at my daughters and decided something’s gonna change, my daughters won’t life the limited life I’m living and life changed
On the journey you grow because you’re learning and being challenged, it pushes the resilient part of you and pushes you to the next thing because you have to figure it out and think differently in order to get past the particular obstacle or challenge that’s in front of you at the time. A lot of the time we don’t think of it that way, we think about it as “why is this happening to me?”, but when you’re heading to that next elevation of life there are some challenges there, but they’re all there to help you grow and get you to that next level.

ABOUT THE GUESTRamona Rogers’ journey as an entrepreneur and coach began many years ago in her home town of Tulsa Oklahoma where she watched her parents and grandparents own and operate their own businesses. As a child she received hands-on experience working in many of those family entities. As one of the youngest of eight, she always went above and beyond the call of duty to prove her abilities. This is how she established her strong work ethic. Her mother stayed home to raise her and her siblings while they were young. The chapter talks about three specific things that happened to me that were like a gut punch and sent me into depression. I have a job that I liked, but I had aspirations, so I was looking for another job but I didn’t get it, so I felt deflated. I began looking at what I did wrong and what I could have done better. Then my Mum passed away which was much more significant and I wrestled with that for a long time. The following month, I’d barely got through the grieving process and I got sick. Nobody really wanted to tell me what it was, I was seeing lots of different specialists and the concern was it could have been a cancer. That was my abyss and I think a lot of people go through this all the time and we don’t take the chance to slow down and it builds into a dive. What do you do in those situations?
I had to compartmentalise to get through each one. The job thing became so insignificant after my Mum’s passing and then my illness, it was a blessing in disguise. I had to forgive myself when it came to my Mum, we didn’t have a great relationship towards the end, there were things I wanted to talk about that we would never be able to discuss to acknowledge my hurt and find out her thoughts. But, I had to get past that and forgive her, and forgive myself for feeling that way towards her. I realised that she had been through a lot and needed help herself, she’d grown up and survived in a war torn country and came to a country that was not always supportive, if you will, at a time when there was civil unrest. Her whole life was marked by trauma and I became thankful that she had the wherewithal to bring my family to a different country where we didn’t have to go through what she had.
Faith isn’t just about religion. I talk about having two kinds of faith: Faith in God and faith in myself. The faith in myself is about the way you talk to yourself, your affirmations, your self-talk, what you are telling yourself and what you are able to do and not do, based on how you set yourself up for your day. That grows out of my Mum’s strength and my family’s determination. The other faith is faith in a higher power, whoever that is and however that is for each individual person and what does that mean to you in terms of what do you have faith in and how does that inform what you do on a regular basis, and are you being true to yourself and your values, etc?
A dream that gets you out of bed is a drive, which is more in line with your passion. The hope for a better tomorrow is almost like treading water, but it doesn’t have the same depth of purpose. People need to really think about dreaming big dreams, have a big goal, because I think that provides the drive and purpose and will get you moving.

I’m a root canal specialist, but I took a different path and studied biological endodontics – I’m into health, so after I mastered my skill I wanted to look into I can do it better for my patients and what can I improve upon it to give the best work with the least harm to the body. I use materials and tools that do no harm and actually promote healing, such as using lasers to do root canals and using ozone to disinfect the tooth while trying to avoid chemicals.
Because of the way I practise, I don’t just see my patients for a root canal then I’m done and goodbye, we view health as an overall connection in the body. Sometimes if a root canal doesn’t heal, it’s not that your endodontist did a bad job, it’s your whole-body connection, your health and everything. I really enjoy sitting down with my patients and talking about health and what links to what and really help them.
My family was unusual forma an Asian family, they didn’t push us to become a doctor or an academic, they always used health and happiness as the key. The only requirement was that we’d better be good citizens! “You do you, but if I hear anything bad about you, well have to talk!” I was going to be a nail technician like my mother because in my heart I knew I wasn’t smart like my exams showed that I was, but I got lucky and got a scholarship into college, I failed my first year because I didn’t know how to study, but my mindset was: What is there to lose? So I focussed on learning one step at a time and any mistakes I made were honest and I learned from them. I was never someone who knew what they wanted to be, I was good with my hands and I always want to learn new things.
People ask me how I get my kids to eat everything, because I teach them why they have to eat certain things, for example bitter melon – I tried several times for them to eat it and they didn’t like it because it’s so bitter, but I really got them to be motivated – I couldn’t trick them not eating it – there had to be a reason they want to eat it, so I explained to them this and that and now they eat it.

BEST MOMENTS‘I have 3 kids and I home-school them as well as run my practice. I grew up with nothing and wanted to give them everything, but one day I realised that they don’t need that, I didn’t need that. What I need to do is teach them about relationships. Being a busy parent, sometimes I don’t have time to do extra-curricular activities, but I do have a tool I can use three times a day to be able to not just take care of them but teach them valuable life lessons, and that’s through cooking.’

ABOUT THE GUESTDr Vi Ho was born in Vietnam and grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She received her Bachelor Degree in Biology from Texas A&M University. Immediately upon graduation, she entered Creighton University School of Dentistry and graduated in the top 2% of her class.
While at Creighton University School of Dentistry, she was selected as a member of the national dental honour society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon. The membership was limited to those dental students who have distinguished themselves by excellence in scholarship, while demonstrating exemplary traits of character and potential qualities for future professional growth and attainments.
Dr. Ho then got accepted to a class size of two residents at the University of Texas School of Dentistry- Houston to receive three extra years of endodontic specialty training and a Master Degree in Science of Dentistry.
During her time as an endodontic resident, she was involved in her own research of root canal irrigation and served as a teaching assistant to dental students.
After years of practising endodontics, she decided to establish her own practice, Cypress Endodontics. Dr. Ho’s philosophy is that a patient can’t see what you’re doing but they can feel what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. For every patient, she strives to hear from them at the end of the procedure that they felt comfortable and confident with her care. To her, that’s professional satisfaction and pride that she always aims for.
Dr. Ho has been invited to speak on nutrition, health and relationships at various events including the International Academy of Biological Dentistry & Medicine wellness retreat. These are topics she is very passionate about outside of Endodontics and loves to go to events and speak on these passions and share her knowledge. And sometimes it might need a filter on it, but that is the world in which we live today. We live in a world full of creative, intelligent, very very smart young people, but on the flipside, they sometimes don’t have the wherewithal to go through a lot – they will walk away from things if something is not working right whereas we’re loyal to a fault.
There’s a changing of the guard between young and old where the young people don’t respect or revere the elders and the elders don’t want to hear from the young people because they feel like they’re disrespectful, they need to be seen and not heard, they need to stay in their place. One of the things I’ve been working on is a programme to be able to bridge the gap and rebuilt the bridge that has divided the generations and be able to have the young people understand that they have to hear the adults, not just take what they have to offer and the older generation needs to be able to hear the younger generation, we have to give them the opportunity to know that they’re valued, that we need them. How can we effectively work together with them if we shun them? Bad communication has to continue to be developed and sharpened.

Coming from an ex-Soviet Union country where everybody walked and talked that same and kids didn’t have a voice, it created a lot of limits in my mind. When the borders opened I started to work with international companies and I saw the other side of things. Really fast it became my mission that once we believe in ourselves, our skill set and really look inside and see who we are under all our doubts and fears and the way society wants us to be. It’s time to stop waiting for someone else to fix our lives. Women and girls have been told that a prince on a white horse will come and all your troubles will be taken away. We need to stop those stereotypes and thinking that way and looking for outside happiness – that someone else will make us happy. It’s the same with empowerment, once we feel that and you are able to help someone else to feel that, you are enough, you have such potential, you can do this, you do have a voice. That’s what empowerment is from my point of view and it’s what I always try to help girls and women around me to understand who they really are and what they’re capable of.
We’re working with indigenous communities in Mexico and it’s been a fantastic journey getting to know them and see how little they have and how little we really need to be happy. We have been working with them to teach a sustainable way to manage their lives, specifically their income. Their mindset is that if I sell one thing I don’t have to work until I have no money again, which creates a lot of problems. I lived with them for 5 days and nights and I felt their pain. There’s no water to have a shower, or wash your clothes and dishes, so they create a lot of trash because they can’t wash things. So, we cleaned up the environment they are living in. A few months later around 50% of them went back to their old way of living because they didn’t see an incentive for them to, but the other 50% had carried on cleaning their surroundings because they wanted a better life. Now we’re trying to create opportunities to work with their skill set so that they can sell that in a sustainable way.

Fear is one of the biggest emotions that everyone in the world has, and it really limits people from reaching their ultimate success and being able to step into the greater version of who they are. But, if you just remove the ‘f’ then you’re left with the word ‘ear’. Listen to your heart’s desire and what your soul is saying to you so you can really step into your purpose and your greatness.
In 2012 I twisted my intestine doing Zumba and ended up in the hospital. A year later I was diagnosed with cancer and for 6=7 years I had so many health issues and was in and out of hospital, I was told that I had two types of cancer and with one of them people usually live about 5 years… Here I am! From that experience, and having several near-death experiences, I just thought: “I'm just gonna live life, forget about the fear, forget about the obstacles!” If you focus on the obstacles that inevitably come up in life, you’re going to be miserable.
There are universal laws, like gravity: If I throw something up, it’s going to come down. If I know that then what I throw might hurt someone but, if I want to be creative, I can use that law to my advantage. There’s the law of attraction, the law of grace. When you’re in alignment with the universe and you know how to use them to your advantage you begin to manifest and it’s magical.

I said I’d never write a book again after my last book, but then I got really involved in Facebook and I started doing some videos and started a video blog series for 4 years called ‘Face to Face with Doug Schoon’ which were 15 minute videos where I answered people’s questions. There's probably 250 videos out there. Then I thought, people don’t want to sit around watching videos all the time, you need books too, books can do so much more. For a start you can find specific information much easier. So I split the scripts into 3 books.
You can create the need or you can address the need. Both are valid ways to go. The first is the harder row to hoe, because they may not know they need that, and there is value in that, believe me, I’ve done that too. You have to convince people they need that product or service. Fulfilling an existing need or solving an existing pain point is where the real value is. That’s something people can use right now to improve their services, customer relations and their bottom line.

Doug Schoon is an internationally-recognized scientist, author and educator with over 30 years experience in the cosmetic, beauty and personal care industry. He is a leading industry authority, known for his technical and regulatory work that has helped shape the beauty industry. He is Co-Chair of the Nail Manufacturers Council (NMC), and as Creative Nail Design's (CND) Chief Scientist, was head of the R&D laboratory, QA, and Field Testing/Evaluation departments for almost 20 years.

Schoon is well known for his captivating presentation style and his unique ability to make complex concepts easy to understand.

When I was 18 I ran away from home in Pennsylvania to California where I worked various jobs, eventually working for a publishing company for 6 years, learned everything I could and started my first publishing business at 26 years old, and it was very successful right from the outset. Nails has reverted and the industry is segmenting again. Individual cosmetologists are cropping up all over doing specific work rather than the ability to go in and get all your services done in one place. It’ll be interesting to see where it ends up. I sold my business a year and a half ago during Covid when the world was changing anyway, but I think it’s going to be less employee based salons and more individual stylists doing what they do from a home/mobile base or a salon suite of some kind. I don’t think the majority of young people entering into a career want to work quite as hard now as we did in the past, they want more to enjoy life and not so much the work ethic that we had.
For 20 years I rode on the back of ambulances, watched people getting dialysis or getting hyper-alimentation for nutrition, all kinds of things. When I reached the beauty industry it became my heart. I think the people in the beauty industry are, without doubt, the nicest people I’ve ever met, I never had so much fun. They were fun to be with the hairdressers and the nail technicians, we laughed all the time.
I’m 80, so I truly was a pioneer for women in the industries that I was in. I was the only woman in emergency medicine, I had a magazine in wiring and cables and I remember being in Atlanta, Georgia and I had to give a speech to 260-some utility managers. I was 26 years old, what did I know about utility managers? I was a publisher, I know how to publish magazines. I was scared to death and I got up on that podium and there wasn’t one woman in the room. Not one. That’s the way it was back then. We forged a path and overcame men not respecting what we said. After the war was over women were expected to go back and be housewives and mothers and expected to take care of men, but from an early age I knew that was not what I was going to do.

‘When we started Day Spa Magazine there were only 300 legitimate spas in the US and overnight nail salons became spas, everybody added the work to their salons, it was phenomenal growth that happened overnight.’

Most people that know me know I have a huge passion for the professional beauty industry. I grew up in a tiny town in Rhode Island but my dream was always to go to school to be a hairdresser, but it wasn’t until my early 20s that I put myself through hairdressing school and I was absolutely elated and got pulled into it. Within 18 months I switched from doing hair to nails which started off an amazing career where I have a couple of salons, but I really found my passion in teaching, especially when you have a great product and the heart to be able to educate other nail techs. Now we have our own company where we formulate all our own products from my husband Jim’s brain to my hands. Both our two daughters are now actively involved in the company too.
IBX was a product that came deep from our hearts, Jim came up with the idea of a strengthening device that strengthens the nail from the inside out. We went to a team of chemists who said we couldn’t do it, but it happened. While it’s applied to the surface of the nails, once we’re done there’s nothing left on top, everything’s on the inside – we’re building, strengthening and toughening the nail while at the same protecting it against whatever we wear over the top, you can wear whatever you want. It’s by far the most amazing innovation in my lifetime since doing nails.
I offer two online courses a month, one is for relief pedicures and of course one is on IBX, they’re both certification classes and both very intense at two and a half hours. When Covid hit, we were wondering what we were going to do, so we started teaching even more during the 7-8 months of Covid, I think I educated over 6,000 nail techs. But we stopped charging for our classes because our techs were sitting at home not making any money and since then our classes have been more booked than they’ve ever been, we’ve still not gone back to charging from either of them but we have confidence in our products and education that everybody’s going to buy something. It’s a way to give back to this industry that’s given us so much over the years.
When you look and break down what the foot contains; all the bones and the joints and the ligaments and you think about that, doing a pedicure is important. And know what to do and how to do it and how to keep your clients’ feet safe and how to train them. That’s why we teach about the anatomy of the foot as well as a whole section on disorders.

‘When I teach my students I ask “what makes us great nail tech?” We all know that any nail that comes in to us, whatever it looks like, we can put something over the top of it and make it look fabulous. But, why not start helping the actual nail that’s there. That’s what sets us apart from the other nail techs on the street that are just putting something pretty over the top.’

Jim's Dad had him formulate his first product: a cuticle oil – SolarOil was his very first product. We knew when we started Famous Names and working on IBX, we wanted to come out with a new, more innovative, all-natural, certified organic oil. Jim always has a codename when working on a new product, when she was young our oldest daughter called SolarOil Daddy’s Oil, so the codename for this was Project Daddy which 18 months later we changed the spelling to DadiOil.’

Some of the best educators in the world work at the booths in the trades shows and they allow you to ask questions and watch them do nails.

In 2001 I became a single parent having got divorced and I thought: What now? My life has been my children and I wanted to be close to them. How do I create a life that doesn’t keep me away from home day and night? I’d have beauty treatments for years and my nail tech said she thought I’d be a natural. I hopped on board, took the full-time course, worked in your spa for a time then set up a mobile company where I went to clients’ homes.
Lashes came later in my career. For women that are cancer patients and survivors it’s a challenge, you’re dealing with very sparse lashes, lashes that don’t have very good retention, that are brittle, that are really fragile. Women who have challenges appreciate time and consideration to do what needs to be done.
Vanity was the thing that attracted me to artificial nails! I’ve had some sort of nail enhancement on my nails for the best part of maybe 35 years. It doesn’t matter how pregnant you are, how bad your hair is, if you have nice nails you feel pretty, you just do. I enjoyed the time with the beauty practitioner.
Most of my very best friends have come from the beauty industry, the people that you meet through your career, be that at trade shows or nail camp or in your spa or salon, there’s a huge connection of a common thread that we all love the beauty industry, we all love making people feel good, we love providing those services.

‘There are no accidents in life.’

‘My first client was a two-time cancer survivor who was reluctant to go into a spa because a lot of places weren’t up to the standards they should be. She trusted me to come to her home with my sterilised pouches, which she loved.’

‘There’s something that gives to your heart when they look at their fingers, their toes, their lashes. They look at you and just smile, they don’t need to say anything. When you leave them happier than they were when you first arrived, that really does a heart good.’

Not unlike many little girls, Susan Lanigan had an affinity for beauty. Hair was important to her, and she began having hers ‘streaked’ in the early 80’s. Then came nails. Always a fascination, Susan would watch her nail tech create stunning pink and whites.

In 2002, Susan relocated back to BC after having been in Saskatchewan for 4 years. Newly divorced, and with three children, she’d had the luxury of being a stay at home Mum. Now that her three children were all in school, she thought, “What am I going to do to best support myself and still be available to the children?”

A Nail Tech encouraged Susan to look into training as a Nail Tech herself. The industry had just become deregulated just as she obtained her education, and she saw a decline in the standards of the industry. Non Standardised Salons (NSS) popped up everywhere. It seemed that many of the clientele didn’t have the good sense to question the practices, only the prices.

Sitting on the sidelines, practising the high standards taught in school, Susan became passionate about preaching ‘the basics’ of nail technology. Health, sanitization, proper nail preparation, and style and structure.

Susan continued to take ongoing education to further her knowledge. The internet exploded with a plethora of good (and not so good) sources of information and education for teaching practices.

Now, online education opens up the possibilities to so many who may not have the time, means or location for good quality education.

In 2011, Cheryl approached Susan and asked if she would join her team. Susan spent hours pouring over student assignments that came in the mail. Creating short videos on each assignment, bringing attention to the strengths and areas of improvement of their work. She remains with the school today as the Director of Student Assessments.

Her ‘handful’ of clients has grown substantially and she’s also become a certified Eyelash Technician.

It’s a way of bringing together the nail community through education and inspiration, showcasing work, salons, techniques and all the things nail professionals are doing all around the world.
There was a time in my 30s where I questioned if I had a purpose because I have suffered (until quite recently) with strong bouts of depression which started when I was young and were a very big problem back then, I didn’t realise I needed help. When you battle depression for many years you become someone who hides a lot. IN recent years I’ve got the help and guidance I needed and through that found my purpose and the ability to question what is a purpose and why do I need one. It definitely changed my life path and gave me strength, direction and meaning.

Alex Fox has been a journalist since 1993 working for six years on photographic titles both consumer and trade. In 1998 Alex moved into the beauty world and worked on the first UK trade nail magazine, Nails Plus. This led to heading a team of 10 journalists as editorial director and launching two salon titles and a spa trade title too. Alex next co-founded Scratch magazine, the UK's only trade title dedicated to hand, nail and foot care professionals in 2003. In her role as editor, Alex then introduced the first consumer nail title, Gloss, which enjoyed two issues a year before closing and has been organising Nailympia London for the last 15 years, which brings nail professionals together from across the globe to compete on an international platform. I got started in the industry a bit by mistake. I didn’t do well at school and I was looking at what to do after having my three children. I looked at interior design, nails and hairdressing and two of those weren’t going to work around little children, so I found a course on Creative Nail Design, I thought it was going to be easy and boy did I get a shock. It’s not as easy as we make it look, and that’s what I love about it. I love the chemistry side, the colour, the art and the possibilities of what you can do which led me on to the fantasy categories and extreme nail art and shapes.
Nailympia was one of the best things that ever happened to me, every year I thought I’d nearly got to where I wanted to be, but someone else would come along and blow my mind and I’d think “I want to be like them!” Your goals move all the time, and that’s a good thing, it pushes you to become a better nail tech, a better artist, a better educator, a better mentor to people. Take advice on board, don’t be offended by what someone’s telling you, they’re not trying to be horrible or negative. As a judge, I want you to be better.
I’ve done quite a lot of fantasy nails, but my favourite one was the last one I did in Orlando because it was all of my years of experience built up and I knew I was going to retire from competing to concentrate on my distribution, my brand and education. I did Alice in Wonderland, it was probably the best piece I’ve ever made.
I set up a training school myself and was teaching courses and I found an acrylic line that companies would allow me to work with. The UK’s different from America – it’s changing, which is great – you can go to a supplier in the US and buy various different brands. But in the UK, because it’s so small, if you sold one brand that’s all you were allowed to sell. Brands understandably have a style s and a way they want their students to be taught and I wanted the freedom to show several techniques because I feel like there’s more than one road to Rome and I wanted the freedom to do that.

‘I feel I can be myself and be very creative in the competitive side. You can do it in the salon but you’re limited on time, you have to make a profit and it has to be viable. Creating extreme nails was the way I relaxed after a hard day.’

‘In fantasy you can make anything; as big as you want, as small as you want, massive 3D elements out of anything related to nail products. People say you can’t use those skills day-to-day, but working with gel of different viscosities, you get to understand your product better which relates to salon.’

‘I always feel so much pressure because I’ve won previously and done so well, it gets harder and harder. My whole family expects me to be in the finals of everything, but I don’t, I feel that you earn your place there by working hard, by having integrity, professionalism and doing your bit to make the industry a better place with what you can.’

‘One of my biggest fears is standing up in front of a room full of people and talking. I'm fine one-to-one, you can’t stop me talking, but it’s been the hardest thing for me to overcome. I did one recently for the very first time at a professional beauty show, because I’d said no for years, and the nerves went fairly quickly once I started talking and got into it.’

Before training as a nail technician Hazel Dixon had no idea what she wanted to do after having her 3 children. She has always loved art and drawing but never really considered nails as a career because all she had ever seen was the traditional pink & white nails, which didn’t appeal to her... until one day; She noticed a lady with sparkly glitter tips and that grabbed her attention and she started looking into doing nails.

Hazel researched different courses and found a reputable nail company where she booked on a 5 day acrylic beginner course. It was much harder than she thought it was going to be, but she kept at it and passed in March 2006. Since then, Hazel has completed more courses including an NVQ LVL 3.

One of the major things Hazel has learnt over the years is not to underestimate the power of education, it has been an invaluable tool that has seen her salon grow and grow, even in a recession. In this industry there is always something new and exciting to learn and clients are always looking for something new.

Another thing that has helped Hazel learn a lot more about nails is competing in national and international competitions. She first started competing in March 2009 when she entered the UK National Competition. Since then she’s become addicted! Since winning her very first trophy in the Fancy French Category in 2009, Hazel now has another 25 national and international awards.

Her proudest moments to date include winning the UK Nail Art Championships 2011 and later that year the 2 silver medals she won at the International Nailympics Competition. Hazel has represented the UK at the Nailympics 2012 & 2013 and won UK Top Tech 2012 and 2013. She has been nominated for several Industry awards since, including the prestigious Nail Professional of the Year Award, Scratch Stars’ Nail Stylist of the Year and Mixed Media Nail Artist of the Year. In March 2014 she achieved one of her goals by winning Nail Professional of the Year 2014. Winning this award has meant so much to Hazel as she feels she has been recognised for the hard work, dedication and passion she has for this wonderful industry, so to win it again in 2016 was a dream come true!

Hazel feels she has learnt so much and now wants to pass on these skills, knowledge and passion. She is an independent educator and has developed a full range of courses and workshop training days available for beginners through to advanced. I tripped over a chair when I was a toddler (just over a year old) and caught my fingers in the broiler oven, which was on, so all my fingers were melted together. The doctors didn’t know if they would heal, but they did – I have all my fingers – but I have scars on the top of all my fingers. This greatly impacted who I became in the nail industry. When I was 7 I got my finger caught in the hinge side of a door that shut and cut off one of my fingers and had to have plastic surgery to have it put back on. Because of both of those instances my nail plates are very thin, my nail beds have permanent damage, I’ve never had beautiful nails. I’d hide my hands, sit on them, chew them. When I was 15 a friend went to nail school and brought me back my first full set of pink and white acrylic nails. All of a sudden I looked at my hands and I didn’t see the scars, I felt so beautiful!
My first advertisements I put up in my high school, I made fliers ahead of prom for a full set of nails for $25 and I stuck them in the girls bathroom stalls at eye-level so the second you sat down you saw my name and my advertisement was right there. Now people have made entire businesses off the back of advertising in bathroom stalls, so I was really onto something there! But, I didn’t go to my own prom because I was too focussed on being a business owner.
I would let people influence me, one way or the other, because I just didn’t have my footing. I’d encourage anyone thinking about becoming an educator to have firm conviction and be sure footed. You can learn and take all things on, but don’t be a clone of your educator/mentor, be you, be an individual, walk the walk.
I was never interested in doing nail competitions, I thought the people that did them were really talented, but it wasn’t something I could do. But after training for a company in Europe and Florida which had been big into competitions and it piqued my interest a little bit, I started teaching myself what I needed to do for competition and would learn by watching. I competed at the very first Nailympia that was held in the US in 2017 and I took gold in every single one of the categories that I entered and walked away with the winner of winners trophy in my division.

‘At 16 I started a business after attending nail school that was a 60 mile drive each way, every day.’

The course here in Massachusetts, and in Connecticut as well, is still 100. But we’re meeting with the State Board and hopefully they’ll listen to us and bring it up to 250, because it’s not enough time to learn everything.
M-ANT is Advanced Nail Technician, we provide a 15 module online course that you can do at your own time. MNT is Medical Nail Technician, to get this you learn more of what podiatrists do and their terminology and tools, after you take a bridge exam, it will enable you to become a CCPMA – Certified Clinical Podiatrist Medical Assistant – which enables you to work in a podiatrist’s office.

I started in the beauty industry when I was 12 years old. Our family had a friend, Martha, who co-owned a beauty shop in a small town in Tennessee about 15-20 miles from where I lived. She had a health issue and needed some help while she recovered from surgery. My Dad said I would help and so she brought me in, stood me on a Coke crate to be able to shampoo because I wasn’t tall enough to reach the bowls! She taught me the art of shampoo and then customer service. I never dreamed at the time that hairdressing was my future, I was just helping a family friend for $1 a day!
A lot of my hair styling and cutting is because I have a knack, I was told I did so I believed them, and I used that knack to lift me up and take me forward into my career of hairdressing.
Once I got into progressive hairstyling I became a star, I was booked 10-12 weeks in advance, I was really sought after, my haircuts would be on the streets of New York, I was on a TV magazine show and had articles written about me, my fame was enormous. I would do speed to make me feel better if I was tired in the morning, but also my drinking increased and it spiralled out of control until 1983 where I hit my bottom and I sobered up, I’m now 39 years sober.
One of the things that I really held strong to was SOP (standard operating procedures), I had a mission to be the best and I required that with everyone that worked with me. To this day, there are 12 who were my students, who worked with me, that have gone on to live a better life and have their own businesses and that matters.

People rely more now on the videos and hearsay and want one particular product and that we’re just selling for a commission, there’s not the trust in us anymore, they trust someone from TikTok or YouTube and challenge you.
People are chomping at the bit to get pampered again after the pandemic. Lipstick sales went down while everyone was wearing masks, we only had to do our makeup down here… though I still wore lipstick under my mask, call me crazy!

I started developing my businesses in 1981, when I graduated. My first job out of school was in a hair salon doing hair and aesthetics. I was trained under a fabulous Brazilian woman who had trained in Europe and had so much more experience than me and she ran a tight ship. From there I went into semi-independent business in a salon owned by another woman who did ‘space-age facials’ with little suction cups where I learned about muscles and toning. Then I went into room rental where I had a room out the back of a hair salon, this was where I learned how to run a business. Then I moved into my own salon in a hotel and that was a nightmare because you can’t just install a sink in a commercial building, you needed permits, so that stretched my tiny budget.
My school went online literally by accident. I’d had an accident and was in a wheelchair for almost a year and spent several years in rehabilitation therapy, so I could no longer do school because there were stairs. The internet was just starting to become the internet, so I thought about making videos and selling the DVDs to people who can learn from them at home and then go and take an exam or become an apprentice. We had more students online – some from isolated rural communities who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend a school – than we did in the actual school by 2012, so we went online only.
The entire world closed down during the pandemic. Ours didn’t. I honestly think we were the only school that didn’t close, and that made a big difference to us making a mark because, up until this point, online education was taboo – especially in the beauty industry where you have to touch that person, fell their face. I was nervous I’d be ostracised and it was difficult for me to gain a foothold until Doug Schoon came on board and endorsed my school, mine is the only school he’s endorsed, that was a turning point.
When people come into the course, they learn from an international textbook which will take them literally into any country the textbook is accepted, even if they graduate out of Canada they can still take their credentials and pretty much work wherever they’re accepted.

‘I had to go to school 400 miles away from my family, in another state, to learn to be a nail tech. This inspired me to open my own school in Saskatchewan (the first school in the state).’

The first thing to focus on as a beginner in the industry, besides sanitation and disinfection, is proper preparation of the nail plate: If it’s not properly prepared it’s going to be very hard to get things to stick to it and to stay stuck to it, which is really the goal of nail professionals.
Acetone has a very long history of use in the nail industry and, in my opinion, is the safest solvent nail technicians can use except for water. Of course it’s flammable, so you don’t want to smoke around it or heat it up, but acetone itself is a very safe solvent, you’re not going to die or contract brain cancer, that’s a nonsensical myth. There are a lot of non-solvent products that, if used correctly, are superior to acetone.
Studies show that hand sanitisers aren’t nearly effective as people say they are or manufacturers claim they are. They can help a little bit, but they’re not going to sterilise or disinfect your hand, they’ll sanitise it. You can’t rely on them to clean your hand, if you already have dirt or product already on your hands, all the hand sanitiser will do is smear it around your hands and make it easier to penetrate. Sanitiser is for pre-cleaned hands. That’s why it’s important to wash your hands often.
Don’t chemically alter and mix your products, leave them as they are. There’s a lot of unintended consequences that could occur that you’re not aware of and might not even be obvious, like permanent allergic reactions which can take many years to develop.

‘Breathing or taking a break from artificial nails makes no sense, we need to reconsider any service that damages the nail plate. Perhaps the customer isn’t suitable for that service. Suspect yourself and your products first.’

‘Use a good quality nail oil after you apply the enhancements and tell your clients that, while they’re watching their favourite TV show every night, to re-apply that oil. That gives them something to remember when to do it.’

‘Chemo can affect the way our body functions and our nails can grow improperly or even be shed completely. But it’s really the only short-term medication that is likely to cause problems with your nails. Long-term medications, especially hormones, can change a lot of things including nails.’

‘UV nail lamps have been shown repeatedly to be safe for use by nail professionals.’

On this episode of The Walk Of Life podcast, Cheryl Thibault plays an interview she took part in with Canadian Nailympia coordinator Karen Dunn. Explaining Mirage Spa Education Inc, Canada's first 100% online education course in the beauty industry

For the training we use a training hand where the fingertips are all different sizes and can be pushed in to give a flatter nail, or a nail biter and pulled out to simulate longer nails. The nails are then sent to us and we make a video of the assessment that is sent back to the student with the nails so they can do corrections and a refill.
There are six different modules: 1) glueing on tips, shaping blending and learning the basics of that. 2) Gel. 3) Liquid and powder. 4) They get an e-file so they can learn how to use one. 5) Nail art, in which we offer gel and acrylic as well as decals and rhinestones. 6) manicure/pedicure in which they actually do models rather than a plastic foot.
The course can be taken at any time anywhere. Most of our students are new mom’s who don’t want to go back to work, they’re women in transition to a job who have to stay full-time employed, they can do it in the evenings or at the weekends. There’s one student who was an airline attendant and she’d take her hand with her and do it while she was waiting in airports or in her hotel room.
The other courses that we offer are: A smaller version of the nail course called The Artificial Nail Tech which doesn’t teach manicure and pedicure. We do aesthetics and spa therapy but we don’t do practical with that, they’re taught on video and through online videos then we ask them to take an apprenticeship in a salon or spa.

There’s a challenge every day in business and some take longer to overcome than others. My accident was a huge one because I thought it would take me out, but I filed people’s nails from my wheelchair! Offering someone a service is not the same as providing someone with an education, and when you can’t hover over someone and provide assistance, it really made me think how can I help other people in education – that’s my passion.
When I was 10 I had a Doberman whose nails I painted purple. I love crafts, I’d lock myself in my bedroom and do crafts all day, that drew me into the artsy part of it. I can’t paint a picture, but I can paint the smallest picture on a fingernail. When I was a teenager I was babysitting and my friend came over with me and she asked me: “What are we going to be when we grow up?” I said: “I’m going to have two kids, a boy and a girl, two years apart and I’m going to be in the makeup and beauty industry.” And that’s exactly what happened. A childhood dream.

‘Although I come across as quite shy, I have a passion for Harley-Davidsons! But I was involved in a nearly fatal crash and was in a wheelchair for a long time, which limited my teaching. So, I started putting a course online. As of 2012 my school is entirely online.’

‘When you get your nails done, that person is holding your hand. You can’t get more intimate than that, professionally! You can create a deep bond with your clients.’
