In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Susan Daly for a practical, no-nonsense conversation about one of the most guesswork-driven parts of running a practice: frame buying.
Steve and Susan unpack why most practices don't actually have a frame problem — they have a decision-making problem. Without clear processes, cadence, or data, frame buying tends to default to gut feel, favorite reps, or whoever's been there the longest. They talk through how to simplify the entire process down to something that could fit on an index card, why revenue-per-brand matters more than units sold, and how to build a healthier, more intentional relationship with reps instead of an exhausting or dysfunctional one.
This conversation goes beyond inventory management. It's about reducing complexity so opticians can give patients the time and attention that actually drives trust — and sales. Susan shares specific, tactical strategies from her merchandising background, including how to ask patients what they wish you carried, how often to reassess your assortment, and why a simple "try-on party" might be the fastest way to spot what's missing from your board.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo tackles a problem that quietly costs practices their best hires: a great candidate on paper who, a few months in, becomes quiet, hesitant, and error-prone.
Why does this happen?
Drawing on onboarding research and his own not-so-great first job experience (a training manual the size of a phone book), Steve unpacks the uncomfortable reality that most struggling new hires aren't a hiring mistake — they're an onboarding failure. He walks through the three things every new hire actually needs to succeed, the predictable emotional rollercoaster of someone's first 90 days, and the four most common onboarding mistakes well-meaning practices make without realizing it.
If you've ever wondered why a promising hire went from confident in the interview to silent in staff meetings, this episode will change how you think about their first 90 days — and give you a clearer way to set them up to stay.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Corey Pinegar, founder of Team, for a grounded conversation about what AI actually means for optometry practices in 2026—beyond the hype and the fear.
Steve and Corey explore the "plant a flag in the middle" approach: using AI as an accelerant for the business side of practice—insurance verification, claims, scheduling support—while protecting the human relationships that patients actually care about. They discuss why the biggest AI failures aren't technology problems at all, but change management problems, and why so many practices are chasing "productivity theater" instead of asking what outcomes they actually want.
This conversation goes beyond tool selection or automation. It's about how doctors present change to already-burned-out teams, why staff are often using AI in the shadows whether practices have a policy or not, and how the right implementation can free doctors and their teams to simply be human with patients again. Corey shares real numbers from his own team's rollout, along with the coaching and buy-in strategies that made the difference between adoption and resistance.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Dr. Josh Davidson—known throughout the Gulf South as the go-to doctor for dry eye and scleral lenses—to unpack how he built one of the largest dry eye centers in the country, without starting with a blank checkbook or a room full of machines.
How does a doctor become "the guy (or gal)" in their community?
Josh shares the real starting point: not equipment, not capital, but a handful of extra minutes spent explaining what's actually happening on a patient's eye. He and Steve dig into why patients equate that kind of attention with expertise, why chasing every piece of new technology can actually backfire on trust, and why some of his most loyal patients are ones who'd already been sold thousands of dollars in gadgets elsewhere before finding him. Josh also gets specific about what he tells associate doctors who want to build a specialty inside someone else's practice, and how local talks, parade floats, and even his kid's baseball team became some of his most effective brand-building tools.
If you've ever assumed you need the newest machine before you can specialize in something you're passionate about, this episode will change how you think about what actually builds a reputation—and a following—in your community.

In this episode, Dr. Vargo sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Roush, a practice owner from Northeast Indiana, to discuss the transformative impact of annual retreats on leadership, teamwork, and business growth.
Dr. Roche explains the logistics, planning, and execution of successful annual retreats, sharing how they have become her staff's favorite day of the year. She delves into the themes, activities, and strategies that make these retreats effective, including team-building exercises, custom-tailored content, and the importance of fostering vulnerability and connection among staff.
Dr. Roche also provides insights on maintaining the momentum of retreat learnings throughout the year for sustained improvements in practice operations and patient care.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Dr. Shannon Joseph for a conversation about one of the most overlooked revenue opportunities in eye care — the contact lens dropout.
Steve and Shannon explore why so many patients quietly stop wearing contacts and never bring it up again, why doctors aren't having the conversation either, and what happens to a practice when someone finally does. They dig into the assumptions patients carry — that they were told they couldn't wear contacts, that the technology hasn't changed, that nobody can fix what didn't work before — and how a few simple questions can unravel all of it.
This conversation goes beyond contact lens sales. It's about building the kind of patient experience that creates loyalty, drives referrals, and reminds doctors why they got into this work in the first place. Shannon shares how she's built a whole-team approach to re-engaging dropout patients — from the first phone call to the pre-test questionnaire to the exam room — and why fixing a problem a patient didn't even know they had is one of the most powerful things a practice can do.
In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Luke Mathers — optometrist, author, and stress resilience expert — for a conversation that challenges one of the most common assumptions in healthcare: that what you're feeling is burnout.
Luke spent 27 years in clinical optometry before following a personal health experience down a rabbit hole of evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and human behavior. What he discovered reshaped how he thinks about stress, exhaustion, and why so many high-achieving professionals feel stuck even when everything looks fine on the outside.
Steve and Luke explore Luke's framework for three distinct states that often get lumped together under the burnout label — burned out, bored out, and checked out — and why getting the diagnosis wrong means the treatment will fail.
They also dig into the business case for human connection, the neuroscience of why presence in the exam room changes patient outcomes, and what it actually means to recover on purpose rather than just waiting for things to slow down.
This conversation goes beyond stress management tips. It's about understanding what's really happening beneath the exhaustion — and finding your way back to the work that gave you a sense of purpose in the first place.
In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Chris Millet, Managing Director of Global Sales for Modern Optical, for an honest and timely conversation about what the data is telling us — and what independent practices can no longer afford to ignore.
Capture rates in the independent channel have dropped below 50% for the first time, and the reasons go deeper than the economy. Chris and Steve explore the shifting consumer mindset around affordability, brand loyalty, and the experience patients are now expecting when they walk through your door. They discuss the K-shaped economy playing out inside optical dispensaries, why the "sell up" strategy that worked for years is losing its grip on a growing segment of patients, and what the most adaptive practices are doing differently right now.
But this conversation goes beyond sales strategy. It's about being honest with yourself — about your inventory, your approach, and whether the practice model you've built still matches the patients walking in today. Chris shares practical examples from practices across the country that are plugging leaks, having better conversations, and finding ways to keep patients in the optical without pressure or pretense.

Finding and hiring an associate OD has become one of the most frustrating challenges in independent practice — and most owners have no idea why their approach isn't working.
In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo digs into the reality behind the associate shortage: the problem isn't only that there aren't enough doctors. In many cases, the way practices recruit, communicate, and present themselves is quietly disqualifying them before a candidate ever picks up the phone.
Why are qualified ODs going silent after interviews? Why do job postings sit untouched for months? And what does nearly $200,000 in student debt have to do with the way a young doctor reads your job ad?
Drawing on recent research into what today's ODs actually want from employers, Steve unpacks the psychology behind how this generation evaluates opportunities — and why transparency, structure, and specificity matter far more than prestige or promises of "someday."

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo tackles something that's quietly weighing on a lot of healthcare professionals right now: uncertainty about the future.
What's actually coming? What's hype? And what does any of it mean for independent practices like yours?
Drawing on recent research across multiple healthcare forecasting sources — including data from the AMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Pew Research, and McKinsey — Steve breaks down the ten most significant trends shaping healthcare through the end of the decade, with a specific lens on what they mean for independent optometry.
Some of what's coming is disruptive. Some of it is genuinely good news — especially for the parts of practice most of us actually care about. And some of it won't affect your specialty at all.
But here's the through line: the practices that will thrive in the next five years aren't necessarily the biggest or the most technologically advanced. They're the ones that use the right tools to clear the administrative noise — and protect the human relationships that no algorithm can replace.
If you've been feeling uncertain about where eye care is headed, this episode won't add to that anxiety. It's designed to replace it with clarity.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo welcomes back optometrist and practice owner Dr. Kristina Pusz for a deeper conversation about the one thing most growing practices are missing: structure that actually sticks.
Steve and Christina explore what happens when a practice is growing on the outside but quietly unraveling on the inside — staff turnover, things slipping through the cracks, and a leader waking up in the middle of the night unable to turn her mind off. Christina shares how shifting from sporadic, one-sided staff meetings to a structured, accountability-driven leadership system changed not just her practice, but her life.
This conversation goes beyond meeting agendas and to-do lists. It's about psychological safety, the courage to let go of control, and why the practices that run the most efficiently are often the ones with the fewest people — not the most. Christina opens up about her own struggle with micromanagement, what her team finally said to her that forced her to change, and why the doctors who say they don't have time for this kind of structure are often the ones who need it most.
If your team goes quiet when you ask for feedback, if accountability keeps slipping, or if you're carrying more than you should be — this one is for you.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with optometrist and AI early-adopter Dr. Jay Henry and Josh Gosnell, co-founder of Adit, for a practical and eye-opening conversation about what artificial intelligence is actually doing inside optometry practices right now — and why the doctors who aren't paying attention may already be falling behind.
Steve, Jay, and Josh cut through the hype and the fear to talk about what AI can realistically do for your practice today: answering phones after hours, scheduling patients, scrubbing claims, scribing, and flagging the moment a patient call starts to go sideways. Dr. Henry shares how his group practice uses AI from the first touchpoint to the last — and how it's transformed not just efficiency, but culture. His staff smiles more. His charts are done before he leaves. He goes home.
But this conversation isn't just about technology. It's about getting back to why you became a doctor in the first place. The administrative grind that's quietly burning practices out isn't inevitable — and AI may be the most practical tool available right now to push back against it.
If you've been curious about AI but don't know where to start — or you've been waiting for a reason to take it seriously — this episode is a good place to begin.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Jenna Ellsworth, National Account Manager for CareCredit, to tackle one of the most common — and costly — moments in any practice: the patient who was ready to say yes, but walked out the door anyway.
Why does this keep happening?
Steve and Jenna make the case that price objections are rarely just about money. More often, they're a signal that the patient wasn't given the right information, at the right moment, in the right way. And in most practices, that conversation is happening too late — or not at all.
From when to introduce financing options during the patient journey, to how doctors and staff can bring it up naturally without feeling like a sales pitch, this episode offers a practical roadmap for keeping more patients in-house and helping them actually follow through on the care you're recommending.
If you've ever watched a patient hesitate at checkout — or leave to "think about it" — this episode will change how you think about the price conversation and give your team the tools to have it with confidence.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo joins certified financial planner and 20/20 Money podcast host Adam Cmejla for a candid conversation about one of the most common — and costly — mindsets in independent optometry: the belief that the business model is broken and that adding new services is the only way out.
The conversation starts with a frustrated email from a real OD — one who feels stuck, undervalued by insurance, and convinced that the only path forward runs through dry eye spas and red light therapy. Steve and Adam unpack why that thinking is understandable, why it's also a little dangerous, and why the same communication gaps that are quietly killing capture rate will follow you right into your next revenue stream.
Steve challenges the profession's complicated relationship with selling, makes the case that better communication, not better services, is usually the first domino to knock over, and shares practical, low-risk ways to start improving patient conversations today.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo tackles a frustrating experience nearly every practice owner has lived through: a candidate who interviews beautifully, gets hired with confidence — and then quietly unravels six weeks later.
Why does this keep happening?
Drawing on research into hiring psychology and behavioral science, Steve makes the case that bad hires aren't bad luck — they're the predictable result of a broken process. The gut instinct we rely on in interviews turns out to be one of the weakest predictors of job performance. Meanwhile, the approaches that actually work are ones most independent practices have never been taught.
In this episode, Steve breaks down the most common places the hiring process goes sideways, why interviews are performance environments that reward the wrong things, and what a smarter — and surprisingly simple — approach looks like in a real-world practice setting.
In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Kayla Ashlee for a fascinating conversation about one of the most misunderstood groups walking into today’s practices: Gen Z patients.
Why are so many doctors and opticians struggling to connect with this generation?
Steve and Kayla explore how Gen Z’s digital upbringing, constant access to information, and high sensitivity to inauthenticity are changing the way practices need to communicate. They unpack why traditional “doctor talk,” overexplaining, and product-heavy presentations often fall flat—and how these missteps can quietly lead to lower capture rates, weaker trust, and missed opportunities in the optical.
This conversation goes far beyond generational stereotypes. It’s about learning how to communicate more clearly, guide more effectively, and create an experience that feels personal rather than transactional. Kayla shares practical insights on simplifying language, improving handoffs, asking better questions, and creating more customized optical experiences that resonate not only with Gen Z, but with patients across the board.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo tackles a frustration nearly every practice owner has experienced: your patients like you, your patient surveys are positive—and yet referrals just aren’t happening.
Why is that?
Drawing on behavioral science and real-world experience, Steve challenges a common assumption in healthcare: that satisfied patients naturally become advocates. The research tells a different story. Patient satisfaction alone does not drive referrals—trust does. And more specifically, it’s the kind of trust that makes patients feel like you’re genuinely on their side.
Through a relatable story and practical insights, Steve unpacks what actually drives word-of-mouth in healthcare, including the powerful role of memory, emotional moments, and how visits end. He introduces key concepts like the “peak-end rule,” the intention–behavior gap, and why even well-intentioned patients often fail to follow through on referring others.
If you’ve ever wondered why happy patients don’t automatically translate into practice growth, this episode will shift your perspective—and give you a more intentional, human-centered approach to generating referrals that actually happen.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Cory Pinegar for a practical conversation about virtual assistants, remote staffing, and why more optometry practices are taking a serious look at hybrid teams.
Steve and Cory unpack some of the biggest misconceptions doctors still have about virtual assistants—from concerns about communication and quality to fears about accountability, culture, and whether remote team members can truly feel like part of the practice. They also explore why virtual staffing is not a “plug and play” solution, and what practice owners need to do on their end to make it successful.
This conversation goes beyond outsourcing as a cost-saving tactic. It’s about building a smarter workforce for the future—one that blends in-office staff, remote team members, and AI in a way that reduces overload, protects team culture, and creates more space for meaningful patient connection. Corey shares practical insights on hiring, onboarding, training, setting clear expectations, and helping virtual assistants become real members of the team rather than just invisible support in the background.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with optometrist and consultant Dr. Larry Golson for a practical conversation about leadership, delegation, and one of the biggest hidden barriers to growth in private practice: the owner who can’t let go.
Building on an earlier discussion about EOS—the Entrepreneurial Operating System introduced in Traction—Steve and Larry focus on one of its most powerful and misunderstood tools: the Accountability Chart. Together, they explore how a clear structure for roles, reporting, and ownership can reduce chaos, improve trust, and help practice owners stop being the bottleneck in their own business.
Larry shares how implementing EOS in his own practice changed everything—from team alignment to sustainable growth—and why many owners unknowingly create stress, confusion, and frustration by leading from control rather than clarity. They also unpack the emotional side of delegation: why trusting your team feels so difficult, how to avoid creating more conflict during organizational change, and why empowering others often leads to better outcomes than trying to hold everything together yourself.
This conversation goes beyond org charts or management tactics. It’s about rethinking leadership, creating structure that gives people confidence, and building a practice that grows because more people are taking ownership—not because the owner is carrying more.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with financial planner and repeat guest Adam Cmejla for a timely conversation about taxes, costly filing mistakes, and why practice owners need more than just a CPA who “gets it done.”
Steve and Adam unpack a real-world example that started with a social media post: a doctor’s tax return included an $83,000 qualified business income deduction they likely didn’t qualify for—an error that could have created more than $30,000 in back taxes, plus penalties and interest. From there, the conversation expands into the broader issues practice owners need to understand during tax season: the difference between tax preparation and tax planning, why a second set of eyes matters, and how seemingly small errors can turn into expensive problems years later.
This conversation isn’t about fear. It’s about clarity. It’s about helping doctors understand their numbers, ask better questions, and take a more intentional approach to taxes as part of a complete financial plan.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo explores a frustrating experience nearly every doctor has faced: explaining a treatment plan clearly, receiving agreement from the patient—and then watching them never follow through.
Why does this happen?
Drawing on recent research he conducted on patient behavior and adherence, Steve unpacks the uncomfortable reality that patient “non-compliance” is rarely about patients simply not caring or not listening. In fact, the World Health Organization and behavioral science research suggest something very different: many adherence failures are predictable outcomes of human behavior—and often influenced by how treatment plans are communicated and implemented.
If you’ve ever wondered why patients nod in the exam room but don’t act afterward, this episode will challenge the way you think about compliance—and offer a smarter approach to designing care that patients actually follow.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo is joined by repeat guest Ankit Patel—AI and remote staffing expert and founder of My Business Care Team—for a practical conversation about one word that matters more than ever right now: scalability.
Steve and Ankit unpack why so many optometry practices feel stuck in a staffing trap—constant turnover, missed calls, overwhelmed teams, and owners carrying far more operational weight than they should. And they connect the dots to a hidden consequence most doctors don’t think about until it’s too late: if your practice is still “key-person dependent,” it becomes harder to scale… and less attractive to buy.
You’ll hear how Ankit has built a hybrid model using remote teams and AI to strip away administrative noise—phones, confirmations, insurance verification, recalls—so in-office staff can focus on the patient experience. They explore what changes when remote staffing is done right: fewer distractions, higher capture rates, stronger patient flow, improved profitability, and a business that feels less like a job and more like an asset.
This isn’t a conversation about outsourcing to save a few dollars. It’s about building a modern practice that can grow without compounding chaos—and creating the kind of structure that can increase valuation and help you sell faster, and at a higher price, when the time comes.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Australian host Michael Nasser for a candid conversation about the real reason so many practices plateau—even when the doctor is working harder than ever: a leadership gap no one trained you for.
Steve breaks down the hidden difference between management (running the day-to-day) and leadership (creating direction, clarity, and momentum)—and why most practice problems don’t live in the exam room. They unpack what happens when goals are fuzzy, communication is inconsistent, and accountability is avoided… and how that quietly creates staff friction, stalled growth, and burnout.
You’ll hear practical, immediately usable ideas—like how to build accountability without confrontation, how to identify (or develop) the right office manager, and the five pillars Steve sees behind most team issues: clarity, development, strengths, accountability, and autonomy.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with optometrist, author, and podcast host Dr. David Kading for an honest and timely conversation about burnout, staffing strain, and why the way we’ve been running practices may no longer be sustainable.
Steve and David explore the concept of the “Invisible Team”—virtual professionals who work behind the scenes to reduce administrative overload, protect in-office staff, and restore the parts of practice ownership that many doctors feel they’ve lost. They discuss how staffing shortages, rising complexity, and constant interruptions quietly erode patient care and physician satisfaction—and why adding more people in-office isn’t always the answer.
This conversation goes beyond cost savings or efficiency. It’s about redesigning the practice around meaningful patient connection, reclaiming time and energy, and building systems that support doctors instead of draining them. David shares hard-won lessons from implementing virtual teams in his own practice, including the mindset shifts, systems, and leadership changes required to make it work.

If you’ve ever felt confident diagnosing dry eye… but frustrated by inconsistent follow-through, stalled treatment plans, or patients who quietly disappear, this episode will feel like a reset.
In this conversation, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Dr. Crystal Brimer, founder of Dry Eye Institute, to unpack why so many doctors stay stuck in “dabble mode” with dry eye—and what it actually takes to turn it into a meaningful, sustainable specialty. Dr. Brimer shares the mindset shift that changed everything for her practice, the non-negotiable systems that create consistency even in busy offices, and why most dry eye failures have far less to do with patients—and far more to do with leadership, flow, and clarity.
You’ll hear how screening every patient changes outcomes, why one well-trained “dry eye ambassador” can transform team buy-in, and how clear communication—grounded in objective findings, not pressure—dramatically improves patient trust and follow-through. This isn’t about adding another device or chasing the next trend. It’s about building a process that works in real life, with real staff, and real patients who are overwhelmed.
If you know dry eye could be a game-changer in your practice—but something keeps breaking down—this conversation will help you see exactly where, and what to do next.

They unpack why mindset—not market conditions—is often the real constraint on growth, and how learning to lean on others, build systems, and redefine success can completely change the trajectory of a practice.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo reflects on a moment he never expected to witness as an Indiana University alum: watching IU football win a national championship after decades as one of the most historically losing programs in college football. What made the moment even more striking wasn’t just the win—it was how quickly the turnaround happened under new leadership.
Using Indiana’s transformation under head coach Curt Cignetti as a real-world case study, Steve explores why struggling practices and small businesses don’t fail overnight—they drift there slowly. Lowered expectations, tolerated dysfunction, unclear standards, and leaders who are busy but not aligned.
This episode breaks down the leadership principles behind Indiana’s rapid rise and translates them directly into lessons for optometry practices: redefining identity before strategy, raising standards without burning out your team, focusing relentlessly on fundamentals, making hard people decisions, and committing to execution long enough for momentum to compound.
This isn’t about becoming a “national champion” practice. It’s about understanding what it actually takes to change the trajectory of a business in 18–24 months.

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo shares the full conversation from his recent guest appearance on Adam Cmejla’s podcast, 2020 Money—a conversation that explores why so many healthcare professionals feel conflicted, uncomfortable, or even resistant to the idea of “sales,” despite spending their entire careers trying to influence outcomes that matter.
Steve and Adam unpack how early experiences, subconscious narratives, and professional conditioning shape the way doctors communicate, prescribe, lead, and even avoid conversations that could improve patient care. They explore why being a doctor doesn’t automatically guarantee influence—and how listening, asking better questions, and letting go of control can actually create trust and clarity.
This episode isn’t about selling more products. It’s about recognizing that influence is already part of your role—and that avoiding it may be costing you more than you realize.
If you’ve ever felt tension between being a clinician and being a business owner… if you’ve ever wondered why patients don’t always follow your recommendations… or if you’ve questioned whether “sales” belongs in healthcare at all—this conversation will make you rethink everything.

You didn’t start your practice to feel trapped inside it. Yet somewhere along the way, longer hours became normal. Days off felt stressful. And the idea of stepping away—even briefly—started to feel impossible. If you’ve ever thought, “If I’m not there, everything falls apart,” you’re not alone.
In this episode of Eye Own a Business, Dr. Ruth Mannschreck shares a powerful story that began with a personal crisis—and led to a complete rethinking of how a practice can run. What started as a necessity turned into a blueprint for freedom. Not by working harder. Not by sacrificing care or growth. But by building the right systems, empowering the right people, and leading in a fundamentally different way.
This conversation isn’t about shortcuts or “hacks.” It’s about a shift—from being the engine of your practice to becoming its architect. This episode shows you what’s possible when your business finally supports your life, not the other way around.

You don’t need more motivation—you need a better system.
If you’ve ever started the year feeling hopeful, only to wonder by March where your goals went, this episode is for you.
Every January, you promise yourself this year will be different. You set goals with good intentions, real excitement, and a desire to grow. But then real life shows up—patients, staff issues, unexpected fires—and slowly, quietly, those goals fade into the background. Not because you don’t care. Not because you’re lazy. But because the way most goals are set almost guarantees they won’t survive real life.
In this episode of Eye Own a Business, we flip the script on traditional goal setting. You’ll learn why annual goals feel inspiring—but fail you when execution matters most. More importantly, you’ll discover a simple, human framework that replaces pressure with clarity, overwhelm with focus, and frustration with momentum.
In this episode, you’ll learn:

If you’ve ever watched a dry eye patient nod along… then disappear, stall, or come back unchanged, this episode will feel like a reset. Because the truth is: dry eye isn’t just “bad tears.” It’s stress, sleep, diet, inflammation, screens, habits—and a patient who’s overwhelmed by one more thing to do.
In this conversation, ophthalmologist Dr. Laura Periman (the “Dry Eye Master”) shows you how to reorient patients without lecturing or shaming them. You’ll hear how she uses simple, memorable language (and humor) to build trust, create momentum, and help patients actually stick with change. And with Science-Based Health’s Zach Denning, you’ll learn how to recommend supplements and lifestyle tools confidently—without feeling like you’re “selling.”
Hit play if you’re ready to stop chasing symptoms—and start creating real, lasting results for your dry eye patients.

The future of optometry is evolving, and today’s new grads have different expectations, career goals, and challenges than ever before. In this episode, I sit down with Howard Purcell, OD, FAAO, President and CEO of New England College of Optometry, to discuss what the next generation of optometrists really wants—from practicing to the full extent of their licensure to navigating student debt and business ownership. We also explore the shifting dynamics between experienced ODs and new graduates, the role of AI and technology in optometry’s future, and how seasoned doctors can mentor and attract young talent to their practices.

You might be leaving thousands of dollars on the table in contact lenses every year—and not even know it.
If you’ve ever stared at your CL numbers and thought, “We’re busy… so why isn’t this more profitable?” this episode is for you.
In this conversation, you’ll step into the shoes of a practice owner who stopped guessing and started treating contact lenses like a real profit engine. Dr. Justin Bazan didn’t do it by chasing every new brand or arguing over pennies per box—he did it by simplifying. He chose the right partners, leaned into key relationships, and built a strategy that rewards his practice for doing what’s best for patients.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by vendors, confused about rebates, or frustrated that your associate isn’t on board with your preferred brands, you’re not alone. Justin has been there—and he walks you through the exact mindset and moves that changed everything, including why going deeper with fewer companies created more freedom, not less.
By the end, you’ll see your CL line differently: not as a chaotic cost center, but as a focused, trackable, and highly profitable part of your business.

In this conversation with Dr. Brianna Rhue, you’ll step into a new way of thinking about your practice: not as a small business desperately trying to keep up with tech, but as a tech-enabled practice that happens to deliver incredible eye care. Instead of treating AI like a buzzword or a threat, you’ll see how it becomes the quiet engine behind smoother days, fewer bottlenecks, and more time with patients.
Brianna doesn’t sugarcoat the reality: ODs who ignore this shift will feel more irrelevant over time. But she also shows you a path that feels doable, even if you’re not “techy” and you’re already maxed out. From missed calls and broken systems to data you never use and staff who are stuck doing mundane work, she’ll show you how AI can quietly take weight off your shoulders while you stay firmly in control.

In this episode, you’ll step into one of the most overlooked opportunities in eye care—an opportunity that affects every patient over 40 and can quietly transform the way your practice grows.
Dr. Amanda Nanasy shares a story most of us forget: presbyopia isn’t just a refractive change… it’s an emotional moment. It’s the instant a patient realizes their vision—and their identity—is shifting. And for many, it feels like a reminder that time is moving faster than they’d like.
But inside that discomfort is massive potential.
You’ll hear how simple conversations, better expectations, and a patient-centered fitting process can turn frustration into relief… uncertainty into confidence… and lost revenue into lifelong loyalty.
If you’ve ever rushed through a presbyope conversation, avoided bringing up multifocal lenses, or assumed a patient “wouldn’t be interested,” this episode will change how you approach these moments.

In this episode, you’ll step into a challenge almost every practice owner faces—but few want to admit: you’re surrounded by data… and still making decisions based on gut feel.
Alongside Cathy Firman from GPN, you’ll walk through what happens when you stop guessing and start listening to what your practice is already trying to tell you—through revenue per exam, capture rate, staff performance, and the quiet leaks that add up over time.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by dashboards, unsure where to focus, or hesitant to “look under the hood,” this episode will help you take your first clear step. Because when you learn to read the data, you don’t just run a healthier practice—you lead with confidence instead of reaction.

In this episode, you’ll step inside a world few of us ever see—one where every decision carries weight, pressure is constant, and clarity is non-negotiable.
Last week, I spent a day learning from a retired Air Force fighter pilot, and what struck me wasn’t the complexity of the cockpit or the intensity of the mission. It was how much their world mirrors ours. Because while we may not be flying at 500 knots, many practice owners feel like they’re in a dogfight every single day—reacting, scrambling, and hoping things don’t fall apart.
This episode is about what happens when you stop reacting and start leading with intention.
You’ll hear how fighter pilots plan, communicate, execute, and learn with a level of focus that turns chaos into clarity. And more importantly, you’ll discover how those same tools can bring direction, confidence, and momentum back into your practice.

What can an optometrist learn from the CEO of Disney, a best-selling author on sales, and a self-made billionaire who started a company with $5,000? As it turns out—everything.
You’ll hear what happens when clarity replaces complexity, when confidence replaces hesitation, and when action replaces perfection. You’ll see how persuasion becomes service, how storytelling turns strategy into movement, and how purpose fuels persistence long after motivation fades.
If you’ve ever felt stuck managing the business side of your practice or wondered how to lead and grow without losing yourself in the chaos, this episode will challenge the way you think about what’s possible.

Nathan Hayes joins me to unpack the mindset and strategies of owners who play the long game—the ones who treat every decision as an investment in their future freedom. They don’t wait until retirement to think about value. They build systems that run without them. They create teams that thrive without micromanagement. And they keep their practices so well-run that buyers line up when it’s time to exit.

In this episode, you’ll discover why the most powerful tool in your practice isn’t your OCT or your EHR—it’s your voice.
Dr. Steve Vargo shares a personal story of the time he bombed his first big presentation. Months of preparation, flawless slides, and bullet-point perfection… and yet, the audience checked out. That failure became the turning point that taught him one truth every doctor needs to know: information doesn’t inspire action—connection does.
You’ll learn how the same techniques great speakers use on stage—clarity, storytelling, and confidence—can transform the way you communicate in the exam room. Because every patient encounter is a performance, and the way you deliver your message determines whether patients tune out or take action.

In this episode, you’ll step into a conversation that challenges the way most ODs think about marketing.
It’s easy to see marketing as an expense, a line item on a budget that you either cut or dabble in when things slow down. But what if you looked at it differently? What if your marketing wasn’t about spending more—but about finally getting clear on who you are, who you serve, and how you want to grow?
Jeremy Bono from IDOC Marketing Services joins me to share why the last three months of the year are the perfect time to reset, reflect, and get intentional about 2026. Together, we unpack how successful practices approach marketing not as guesswork, but as a system—one built on consistency, differentiation, and alignment with the practice’s bigger vision.
If you’ve ever felt like your marketing dollars weren’t pulling their weight, or you’ve wondered how to stand out in a crowded market, this episode will give you the clarity and direction to turn uncertainty into a strategy—and marketing into momentum.

In this episode, you’ll hear what happens when a group of forward-thinking ODs come together, not just to share clinical tips, but to challenge the way we think about contact lenses.
We didn’t sit around talking about products. We dug into something bigger—the opportunities hiding in plain sight. The moments when patients walk out the door because we never asked the right question. The silent objections that keep them from trying contacts. The staff conversations that either build excitement or quietly kill momentum.
Dr. Tara Vaz joins me to bring you inside that Puerto Rico roundtable, where successful doctors admitted they still face the same barriers we all do—but also revealed how they’re turning those barriers into growth.
If you’ve ever wondered why more of your patients don’t say yes to contacts—or how to stop the dropouts before they happen—this conversation will give you practical ways to make contact lenses a true growth engine in your practice.

Davis Corley, CEO of Newton (formerly Neurolens), didn’t just announce a rebrand. He revealed a bold new vision for the future of eyecare—one that challenges us to rethink how we lead, how we innovate, and how we meet the expectations of a new generation of patients.
We talk about why “innovation” is really just change with purpose, why lagging behind is riskier than ever, and how practices can future-proof themselves by embracing the tools and technologies that patients already expect. From AI-powered staff training to breakthrough lens designs for today’s screen-heavy lifestyles, this conversation isn’t about products—it’s about the future of your practice.
If you’ve ever felt hesitant about change, this episode will show you how leaning into innovation can unlock growth, loyalty, and a patient experience that truly stands out.

In this episode, you’ll step into the shoes of tomorrow’s patient—and see how their expectations are already reshaping the way you need to run your practice today.
The healthcare world isn’t changing slowly anymore. It’s being redefined by the same forces that transformed shopping, travel, and entertainment. Amazon taught us convenience. Netflix taught us personalization. Uber taught us immediacy. And now, your patients are quietly expecting the same from you.
Through research, stories, and real-world examples, we’ll explore how the “patient of the future” is more than just a phrase—it’s your next appointment. They want transparency in pricing, digital convenience, personalized options, and the human connection that builds trust. They’re not comparing you to the OD down the street. They’re comparing you to every consumer experience they’ve had this week.
If you’ve been running your practice the same way for the past five or ten years, this episode may feel like a wake-up call. But it’s also an opportunity. Because if you understand these shifts and act on them now, you won’t just meet expectations—you’ll exceed them, build loyalty, and future-proof your practice.
The future isn’t five years away. It’s already here. The only question is: are you ready?

In this episode, you’ll discover why the most powerful thing you can say to a patient might be nothing at all.
It started with one piece of advice from a seasoned VP of sales: “Ask a question, and then just shut up.” Simple, but transformational.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated watching a patient nod politely and walk away from a solution you know they need, this conversation will give you a new framework—one that taps into human psychology, emotional decision-making, and the subtle art of listening.
Because sometimes, the best way to sell, educate, or inspire action is to stop talking and start hearing what matters most.

Resistance to a sale is often countered with additional patient education, assuming that more information will lower the barrier to a sale. In reality, many of our purchase decisions are not driven by what we KNOW about something, they’re driven by what we FEEL about something.
Fear, excitement, anticipation, trust, safety, confusion, curiosity, and certainty are some examples of emotions that influence our purchase decisions. Research shows the overwhelming majority of our decisions are primarily driven by emotions, not logic.
In this episode we explore some of the not so obvious reasons people resist making a purchase, along with strategies to counter these situations.
In this episode, Selin Olmsted (founder of Selin Olmsted Studio) shares her expertise on a topic many ODs marginalize. Eyewear fashion and design!

In this episode, Sharon Carter shares her strategies for getting “unstuck” and taking your practice to the next level.
We cover a lot of reasons practices fail to reach their full potential and how to put strategies in place to maintain growth. Spoiler alert! You can’t do this alone. After a certain point, designating a leadership team is necessary. However, those efforts can be sabotaged by putting the wrong people in these roles. It’s also possible that you have the right people with the right attributes, but your approach to promotion and development sets them up for failure.
What’s the best way to track success? Numbers! In Sharon’s words, “The numbers don’t lie.” In this interview we cover the importance of KPI’s (key performance indicators), which KPI’s to track, and how to hold employees accountable for outcomes.

In this episode, Dr. Aaron Neufeld shares his strategies for leveraging referrals from other doctors to grow his practice.
When it comes to marketing your practice, many ODs think of traditional marketing strategies such as social media, online or print marketing, and having a great website. These are all important to grow a practice, but in this technological world we often marginalize face to face marketing.
In this interview, we focus on Dr. Neufeld’s strategies for securing more referrals, what to expect when you begin this process, which doctors to target, how to sustain a very productive relationship, and how to overcome some of the obstacles you will likely face.
In this episode, Stanford lecturer Matt Abrahams shares valuable insights about listening and communication from his book, Think Faster, Talk Smarter: How to Speak Successfully When You’re Put on the Spot
Doctors are tasked with solving problems for their patients, but as Matt points out, it’s not hard to solve problems, it’s hard to find the right problems to solve.
In this interview, we focus on asking better questions and sharpening our listening skills. Matt says that questions get the other person more invested in the problem itself and the desire to solve it. “When it comes to communication, we over index on the speaking part and we need to balance that out with the listening part,” he says. When it comes to establishing connections, building trust, and uncovering problems (all vital to patient care), we need to do more listening than talking.

The best practices are NOT constantly trying to motivate people, they just have better systems in place, and they manage the systems. That's much easier than constantly managing (and motivating) people.
Do you agree or disagree with the above? In this episode, I take on the interviewee role as Erich Mattei, President of Akrinos, interviews me on this topic for his podcast. We attempt to answer the question, “Which is more effective when it comes to managing employees, motivation or systems?”
One of the biggest checks you write is to your lab, yet many practices seem to tolerate a lot of bad service from the labs they partner with. Dr. Barton Higley is one doctor who had enough, ultimately partnering with an independent lab out of Pittsburgh called Three Rivers Optical.
In this episode Dr. Higley describes his struggles with the labs he used prior. Poor customer service, poor quality, and inexperienced reps led him to pursue alternatives. Based on prior experience he was understandably skeptical, but he explains how Three Rivers Optical surpassed all his expectations.
Dr. Higley asked himself an important question, “Does their business model align with our practice model?” After partnering this Three Rivers his question was answered. They did! Does YOUR lab align with YOUR practice model?

Approximately 50 percent of doctors are experiencing professional burnout. In this episode we explore the most common reasons for this and what you can do to overcome it. While much of the attention for reducing physician burnout has been focused on getting away from patient care, also called escapism, this isn’t a realistic option for all doctors and it’s also not always the most effective option. A more sustainable approach is not getting away from patient care, but rather changing how we provide patient care. The focus of this episode is on shifting from a transactional model back to a relational model. A more personalized approach to patient care combined with a greater sense of accomplishment can help restore the joy and satisfaction in the profession of eye care.
Are you struggling to make specialty care a meaningful part of your practice? Maybe you’re trying to solve a medical problem when you should be trying to solve a marketing problem.
For many ODs, time is the biggest culprit when it comes to growing a specialty service. Doctors are trying to cram medical conversations into comp exams and failing to get the patient’s buy-in. In this episode with Bob Miglani, founder of Hoot, we explore some of the most common reasons for this and how Hoot provides a solution to these problems.

The conversation also explores the challenge of quantifying intangible assets like goodwill, reputation, and relationships, shedding light on their impact on a practice's overall value. In this enlightening podcast episode with Dr. Carmen Simon, the renowned author of "Impossible to Ignore: Creating Memorable Content to Influence Decisions," we delve into the fascinating world of memory and message retention.
Would it surprise you to know that people typically only remember about 10% of the messages they encounter, and most of this information is forgotten within the first 24 hours? Memory challenge not only affects what people remember, but also what they act on.
As healthcare professionals, what if you could take charge of what patients remember and wield the power to shape their choices? Dr. Simon unveils the keys to controlling that pivotal 10% of information people retain. Without deliberate efforts, what sticks in their memory tends to be random and unpredictable.
In this episode, Dr. Simon walks us through concepts such as deliberate messaging, cognitive ease, and pattern recognition. Understanding these concepts helps you better position your messaging to be remembered and acted upon.
This podcast episode promises to reshape your approach to patient care by tapping into the enigmatic world of memory. Are you ready to become an unforgettable force in the eyes of your patients? Tune in to find out.
When physicians contemplate HIPAA compliance and the safeguarding of patients' protected health information (PHI), their primary focus typically centers on internal aspects. Questions such as, "Do our practice's written policies align with HIPAA requirements? Have we adequately trained our employees on HIPAA regulations? Is our computer infrastructure and software adequately secure?" often dominate their concerns. However, one crucial aspect that often goes unaddressed is whether the vendors who have access to our patients' PHI are also diligently taking steps to ensure the protection of this sensitive information.
In this episode, we engage in a discussion with Christine Schneider, Vice President of Operations, and Jon Kettner, who oversees HIPAA compliance at RevCycle Partners. They provide insights into the comprehensive process RevCycle Partners follows to achieve HIPAA compliance and offer guidance on the essential inquiries you should be making of your vendors to fortify your defenses against potential data breaches.
In this episode with Colin Carr, founder of Carr Realty, we explore the intricacies of securing an optimal space for your practice. Our conversation begins by highlighting the significance of leaving room for growth over the coming years. To gain a tangible grasp of spatial dimensions, Colin recommends using tape to visualize and assess potential layouts.
Delving into the realm of property procurement, our discussion underscores the advantages of collaborating with contractors attuned to the unique needs of optometrists. Colin advocates a structured three-step evaluation approach: analyzing your options comprehensively, assessing location compatibility, and then delving into the financial aspects.
This episode places a spotlight on the importance of enlisting a seasoned broker. Recognizing that negotiations can often be skewed in favor of landlords, a skilled intermediary adds essential expertise to your side.
Colin’s insights also touch on a key negotiation pitfall: prematurely indicating an unwillingness to consider alternate locations. This inadvertently shifts the balance of power to the other party. Emphasizing strategic negotiation tactics, he endorses meticulous research as a potent strategy. Creating a sense of uncertainty can potentially strengthen your bargaining position.
Finally, Colin demystifies costs by clarifying that commissions are typically covered by the seller, thus incurring no direct expenses for the buyer. From making informed decisions about space to navigating negotiations, this episode equips you with versatile knowledge to approach real estate endeavors with confidence and strategic finesse.
In this episode with Ankit Patel, founder of My Business Care Team, we delve into a transformative approach that Ankit implemented in his practice. By leveraging a remote workforce in the Philippines, Ankit's practice achieved remarkable results. Most notably a 33% increase in revenue per patient and a 28% reduction in payroll.
Previously, distractions and administrative tasks limited the support on-site employees could provide. However, by delegating calls and administrative responsibilities to remote staff, valuable time was freed up. This additional time spent with patients translated into a noteworthy increase in average revenue per patient. Interestingly, this shift in staffing also opened doors to a more skilled and diverse pool of candidates due to the ability to pay above market rates.
Ankit operates a Business Processing Outsourcing service, which provides comprehensive oversight for the remote workforce. This approach differs from employing Virtual Assistants, where the practice takes on the responsibility of training, managing, and supervising the VA.

What would it take to open a practice cold and within 5 years achieve a level of financial success that many practices never reach… becoming a multi-million-dollar practice?
In this episode, Dr. Joel Tuite takes us through his 5-year journey, year-by-year. Some of the topics we cover are how he attracted patients in the lean years, the importance of putting staff first and treating patients like family, and how having a vision of success keeps you motivated and optimistic even during challenging times. According to Dr. Tuite, “If you can envision it, it will happen.”
Digital eye strain, while frustrating for your patients, presents a tremendous opportunity for your practice. In the past, contact lenses often had less than stellar outcomes for patients experiencing eyestrain on digital devices. Many of these patients ultimately dropped out of contact lenses. This was not good for the patient or the practice.
Advancements in contact lens technology have created a new option that’s getting raving reviews from both patients and doctors. Patients love the visual comfort and symptomatic relief the lens provides, and doctors love the ease of fitting (98 percent of patients found their final lens with 2 pairs of lenses or less). In this episode with Dr. Michele Andrews, we discuss a lens with potential to create a lot of happy patients (and doctors): MyDay Energys.
Is it possible to set up your optical so most of the selling is done for you without having to speak to the patient? Where you get the patient 80% of the way there and then you close the last 20%
When the patient walks into your optical, there are a lot of factors that can encourage or discourage a sale. Many of these operate on a subconscious level. Things like the number of decisions the consumer is forced to make, where frames are placed relative to eye level, and even the cleanliness of the frames can impact sales.
In this episode with Susan Daly, Director of Optical Strategy and Development for IDOC, we cover 10 tips for boosting sales and several of these tips challenge conventional thinking.
When people search for an eye doctor (or related service) in your area, are you the one who shows up? If not, you’re losing patients and money!
While word-of-mouth marketing may still be king for many practices, online marketing is not far behind. In this episode with Wayne Street, SEO Manager at IDOC, we discuss the most effective online marketing strategies, how to position your website and content to rank high when people in your area search for eye care services, and reasons your marketing is not working (wasting money).
For those who lack the time or expertise to manage their own marketing successfully (probably most of you), Wayne also discusses how IDOC can do it for you. As Wayne states, “It’s easy to do, but involves a lot of work!”
One of the most important responsibilities of private practice ownership, and perhaps one of the most neglected, is staff training. Some of the most common reasons for inadequate training are lack of time, poor training systems, and poor follow-up.
Kayla Ashlee has built a wonderful training platform at Bespexy.com. In this episode, we take a deep dive into some of the most common mistakes with staff training, the role of leadership in executing a training program, building a training structure, and how to continue developing employees beyond the onboarding stage. If your practice struggles with staff training, this episode is a must-listen!

Do you aspire to spend less time seeing patients are more time developing your practice? If you’re not developing and growing your practice, then who is?
Early in his career, Dr. Larry Golson was somewhat dismissive of the term “leadership,” but came to realize how important it was to the growth of his practice. To be a better leader, he needed to get out of the exam room!
Dr. Golson adopted an entrepreneurial operating system called Traction, which allowed him to create a practice with more clarity, greater organization, increased accountability and sustained growth. He now teaches this system to other ODs.
For years we’ve been hearing, “It’s hard to find good employees.” Over the past few years that’s become, “It’s hard to find ANY employees!”
A few years ago, virtual assistants in eye care were unheard of. Today many practices are testing the waters with this concept. Dr. Adam Ramsey is one of those innovative ODs. In this episode, he shares his experience working with a virtual assistant. He discusses how he uses the assistant, his approach to training a virtual staff member, the reaction from both staff and patients, and much more! If you’re on the fence about virtual staff, this episode may convince you to give it a try!
You may be a doctor who treats dry eye, but are you THE DOCTOR in your area who treats dry eye? In this episode with Dr. Janelle Davison, we discuss how to build a brand around dry eye and the many opportunities this can create for both the patient and the practice. When patients have dry eye, are YOU the one they think of for help?
In this interview, we tackle many of the questions you may have about building your own brand. How should I market myself? Should I focus on my current patient database or external patients? What equipment should I start with? How do I present prices to the patient? Tune in to learn how Dr. Davison built her dry eye brand, grew this specialty, and became THE DOCTOR in her area.
“You can make drama or you can make money, but you can’t make both. The thing that Zig (Ziglar) always said about building a team is that “together everyone achieves more”. I have found in my 25 plus years of consulting that this is the magic wand to creating a multi-million dollar practice. The team is everything.”
The above is directly off of Sharon Carter’s website. In this episode, we tackle the topic of team building and the impact this has on your practice. If you aspire to be a better leader and build a team that takes your practice to the next level, this episode will not disappoint! We cover how to get the right people on board, the importance of empowering people, becoming a more effective communicator, culture building, embracing failure, and much more!
Every eyecare practitioner wants what’s best for the patient in the chair. So, why do we sometimes stop short of providing the best care? In this episode with Dr. Selina McGee and Zac Denning of Science Based Health, we explore the role of nutrition and nutritional supplements in the care of patients, and address some of the most common reasons ODs struggle to make this a more meaningful part of their practice.
Perhaps the reason is that you’re not comfortable “selling” products in the office, or you lack the time to discuss these options with patients, or you struggle getting your staff to embrace their role in communicating this treatment option to patients. All of that and more is addressed in this interview. A lot of the ideas presented are not just applicable to supplements, but any area of your practice that you desire to grow.
How do you define success? Would your definition of business success and personal success conflict with each other? Sometimes it feels like they are aligned when they are not. Business success often requires long hours and hefty sacrifices that come at the expense of family and personal joy. In optometry school, did you set a personal goal to spend less time with your kids, take fewer vacations, and watch a savings account grow with money you didn’t get to enjoy?
In this episode with Adam Cmejla, we take a look at this topic and discuss how important it is to work to live, not live to work. Even if you love your job, your practice can and should be in service of not only your business goals but also your personal goals. From a financial planning standpoint, how can you set yourself up for success on both fronts?
In this episode I sit down with Dr, Candace Hoff to talk about something she’s doing that a lot of ODs ask about, but very few successfully execute. That “something” is an in-house discount plan.
In Dr. Hoff’s case, this allowed her practice to drop a few vision plans while retaining a healthy percentage of those patients. The feedback from patients has been mostly positive, and the feedback from staff has been even better. The success of this discount plan has Dr. Hoff targeting additional plans to drop.
Take a listen to learn how she did it, how she communicated this option to patients, and much more!
“Leadership is not about title or positions, it is about one life influencing another.” These are the words of world-renowned leadership expert John Maxwell. In this episode, I had the opportunity to interview Chris Goede, Vice President of Client Success for The John Maxwell Company. Chris is one of our keynote speakers for our upcoming national convention, The Connection, in Orlando on February 16 -19. In this episode, Chris takes us through the foundational principles from John Maxwell’s best-seller, The 5 Levels of Leadership.
As you’re listening, try to determine what level you are currently at, and what needs to change to advance to the next level. Don’t get stuck at a low level! Developing and growing your leadership attributes will pay huge dividends in managing your team and growing a successful practice.
Patient education and effective communication are not the same thing. Patient education only guarantees people will hear what you say. Effective communication increases the odds people will do what you say. So, how do we become better communicators?
Fortunately, we don’t have to guess at that, we just have to make some small but powerful changes in how we communicate with patients. There is a mountain of research demonstrating how to be more effective and influential when communicating with others, and this can be easily applied to patient care. In this podcast, I present some of these concepts and share an audio lesson from a course I created designed to help doctors become more effective communicators. If you’re an IDOC member, email me at svargo@idoc.net for a link to download the entire course for free.

Have you set annual goals for your practice in the past that required you and your staff to perform or produce at a higher level to reach the goal? Did you succeed, or did you find yourself coming up short at the end of the year?
There are many flaws and weaknesses in traditional goal setting, this is especially prevalent with annual goals and bonuses. Leaning on research in workplace behavior, I discuss 3 common reasons practices fail to reach their annual goals, and how to devise a system that increases your chances of success.

What should I look for in a resume? How do I prepare for an interview? What questions should I ask? These are good questions to answer, but many employers just “wing it” when it comes to interviewing job candidates. There is an art to asking the right questions, knowing what to listen for, and identifying the right qualities in a candidate that will not only increase your odds of finding the ideal candidate but also avoid the hassles and headaches of hiring the wrong person.
Employers must also consider that the job candidate is interviewing them! They want some assurance before accepting the position that this will be a great fit for them. The job interview can serve to showcase your office culture, a defining factor in candidate’s choosing your practice over another.
There are times when an OD feels it’s in the best interest of a patient to modify their contact lenses. This often involves making a change, such as changing the brand or modality. This can be a challenge with a patient who is not experiencing any problems with their habitual contact lenses. It can be even more challenging when the lenses you’re prescribing will cost the patient more money than their current lenses.
In this episode, Dr. Moscow shares his strategies for presenting daily disposable, handling objections, and getting the patient’s “buy-in.” These strategies have led to 80% of his contact lens patients being fit with daily disposables!

Let’s dig into a topic many ODs lack knowledge and expertise about… optical and inventory management. They didn’t teach us that in school!
Dr. Neil Patel is a young OD who purchased a practice one year ago. His first thought was “How hard can this be?” Not long after he confided to an IDOC Optical Consultant, “I have no idea what I’m doing!” That self-realization led to his quest to work with our Inventory Management team and learn more about how to successfully manage his optical and inventory. In this interview, Dr. Patel shares what he’s learned over the past year and how the IDOC Inventory Management service has allowed him to run a successful optical with fewer demands on him and his staff.

Change in the eyecare industry is nothing new, but the past few years have seen more change than normal. Having a solid understanding of your practice financials is important to help you navigate changes and strategize for the road ahead.
IDOC’s Associate Director of Financial Services, Nathan Hayes, shines a light on what metrics are most important and how to use those metrics in your business planning and decision-making. We also discuss IDOC’s Books and Benchmarks service that takes the burden of bookkeeping off your plate… and makes sure it’s done right!

Dr. Kris May operates his practices in a region with some of the lowest per capita family income in the country. This isn’t the typical market that comes to mind when we think success with daily disposables, and yet Dr. May’s current daily rate is 55 percent.
There was a time when Dr. May prescribed mostly 2-week disposables and felt that dailies were not an option with his patient base, until he did some research on patient compliance, safety, and practice profitability. This caused him to take another look at dailies and make some big changes. Dr. May shares his best practices and lessons learned in this interview.
Does your career feel stagnant? Have you lost your excitement for practicing optometry? If you fall into that category, that may be hard to admit, but you’re not alone. In fact, it’s very common for ODs to feel “burned out” from the routine of seeing patients. The good news is… you don’t have to be confined to a small dark room if you don’t want to. A lot of opportunities exist for ODs to pursue alternative career paths if they aspire to.
In this episode I talk to Dr. Joel Hayden. His story involves specialty services, a YouTube channel, teaching a course, mentoring potential optometry students, and even a foray into the world of acting. This is Joel’s story. You can write your own, and I hope this interview inspires some people feeling “stuck” to get out of their comfort zone and pursue the unconventional path.

Like many specialty services, a lot of ODs “dabble” but fail to make a service like Dry Eye a meaningful part of their practice. From a clinical and financial standpoint, dry eye has tremendous potential, but a lot of ODs are standing on the sidelines while doctors like Dr. Cohen are going all in and reaping the benefits!
It takes time, effort and money to get where Dr. Cohen is, but the important thing is just to get started. In this episode, we hit the fundamentals of launching a dry eye specialty. Stop dabbling and start building.

In this episode we talk with Dr. Michelle Johnston, author of The Seismic Shift in Leadership, about being a more effective leader. Leadership in the workplace has moved beyond the “command and control” style… or has it? Many leaders are still deploying outdated methods of leading their teams. In a time where employees appear disengaged, turnover is high, and practice revenues are stagnant, it’s worth looking in the mirror and asking, “Am I the problem?”
This interview may challenge many of the ideas you have about leadership, but if you’re willing to make some changes, the rewards for both you and your team could be astounding.

Benchmarking is a term used in business to reference the study of other companies or businesses to compare with your own. Through this process, many companies will (wisely) adopt best practices of other companies.
Disney is one such company that has been widely studied by numerous other companies across a wide spectrum of industries. In this episode, Dr. Vargo talks with Dr. Jennifer Stewart about her fascination with Disney and how she’s integrated many of their business strategies into her practice.

In this episode, Dr. Vargo reached out to IDOC’s own Managed Care Consultant, Jenna Armitage, to discuss an issue we’re hearing from many ODs – getting denied access to insurance panels. This has been a longstanding issue with a few vision plans, but we’re now hearing this more frequently for medical plans also.
While we’re seeing a trend with many practices dropping insurance plans, that’s not practical for every practice and the majority of optometry practices still depend on access to patients provided by insurance companies. In this podcast, we’ll walk you through the process and offer valuable insights into what to do when you’re denied access to an insurance panel.
