Nicholas said a conversation about gender equity without men did not meet the criteria for inclusion. Blake said equity is essential and will happen when we acknowledge that men face challenges too.
In Men-in-the-Middle, author Kori Reed interviews men across corporate America about gender equity in the workplace. This is a topic men can influence, as they hold nearly 75 percent of C-suite positions, but they don’t talk about it at the office. As it turns out, men have a lot to say! “Emerging From the Dark: Stroke...The Untold Stories,” by Terence Ang, is a collection of illustrated stories of people in all stages of stroke recovery. Ang, who himself has experienced a stroke, highlights post-stroke life in an interesting, unique, and powerful way. A stroke survivor himself, Ang’s right hand no longer functions like it used to, and using it is painful and agonizing. This is his second published book, and it is filled with illustrations that he drew himself. However, Ang has shown tremendous courage, grit, and determination in rebuilding his life.

Gabby: Terence, thank you so much for joining us today! Before we talk about your book, "Emerging from the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories," can you please share with our listeners your story, beginning with that fateful day in August 2020?

That day in August was a turning point in my life
I had a stroke
And ended up in the hospital for the first time in my life
I couldn’t talk and nobody could understand me
It was a dark time
I felt hopeless
But I was determined to redefine my life
And I ended up writing about my journey
To prove that stroke was just a chapter in my story
And not the entire book

Gabby: Your debut book, “A Cry in the Dark” was launched in June 2022. It eloquently detailed your journey from victim to survivor. You were subsequently asked by the WORLD STROKE ORGANIZATION to speak at the 14th World Stroke Congress 2022 in Singapore. What inspired you to write and illustrate Emerging from the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories?

I was angry and frustrated in the first year of my stroke
So I channelled my feelings into writing “A Cry in the Dark”
Many stroke survivors reached out to me after that
Which inspired me to write the next book
And share the stories of other stroke survivors
I wanted to pay tribute to the strength and courage of
those who have walked the same Journey

Gabby: “Emerging from the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories” is incredibly inspirational. The narratives you've included from both survivors and caregivers are filled with hope, determination and resilience. However, some of the narratives and illustrations are also dark and disconcerting. Why was it important to share this side of recovery?

Terence (Audio/Video):

I wanted to be honest.
So that someone - who has not
experienced stroke would - learn about our struggles
Each stroke survivor’s experience is unique
Some may find their recovery more manageable
While others face greater obstacles
Through open conversation, I hope people can understand the journeys of stroke survivors
And learn more about our unseen struggles

Gabby: What is the biggest misconception about strokes?

Many people think that stroke only happens to older people
I used to think that too,
Being relatively young and healthy
But, the truth is,
stroke can happen to anyone, at any time.
Even teenagers and young adults can also get it.
So it’s important to learn more about the condition

Havana, Cuba. December 1958. Two brothers find themselves on opposite sides of Castro’s revolution. Alan has penned numerous articles, short stories, and historical fiction novels including his debut, Forgiving Maximo Rothman, which is Book One in the Forgiving Series, and The Interpreter, Book One in the Justice Series.
Alan is fluent in Spanish and considers the Dominican Republic his second home and an inspiration for many of his stories. A Bronx native, Alan is a longtime resident of Washington Heights where he lives with his wife, a digital advertising consultant.
Incident At San Miguel is set in 1959 Havana Cuba, during the Cuban Revolution and its aftermath. The story focuses on a Jewish Cuban family. Specifically, we follow two brothers Aaron and Moises Cohan who are on diametrically opposed sides of the political spectrum. The Cohan brothers have little in common other than a shared Jewish heritage.
For this impressive historical fiction piece, Alan collaborated with Miriam Bradman Abrahams, a storyteller and Cuban born daughter of Cuban Jewish refugees. The Cohan brothers were inspired by the true story of her father Juan Bradman and her uncle Soloman Bradman.
The main theme of the story is love, loyalty, and responsibility to family. Alan likes to write stories that focus on ordinary people who face real struggles “I hope to bring to light the stories of those who have triumphed over oppression”.
“I focus on the personal experience of everyday people faced with extraordinary circumstances. What does one do when faced with events beyond their control? As a member of a family ravaged by the Holocaust, I am determined to tell the stories of refugees and survivors I’ve known.” An avid reader and history buff, Alan was inspired and influenced by many writers including Boris Paternak (Doctor Zhivago) and Hemingway.
Unlike a memoir or a nonfiction book, Alan appreciates how broad a fiction work can be. A work of fiction allows the reader to get very close to the character, feel their emotions, and understand their circumstances, according to Alan.

No One Cheers for Goliath chronicles the obstacles overcome and the leadership lessons learned by Timothy J. Brown from his journey as a first generation African American college student to academic dean. As the son of a steel worker, his path took him from the small steel mill town of Coatesville, PA through his improbable ascension into leadership positions in higher education. His story, however, started inauspiciously as he landed on academic probation after his first semester at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He would rebound to earn two degrees in Communication Studies from West Chester University, and complete his Ph.D. in Rhetoric at Ohio University. From Ohio, he would take his first faculty position at Buffalo State College, before returning to West Chester University as a faculty member in the same department in which he was a student. After five years, he would succeed his mentor and the person who first encouraged him to go to graduate school, Dr. Denny Klinzing, as department chair (Denny served 26 years as chair of the department). Dr. Brown would serve 10 years as department chair of the Department of Communication Studies at West Chester University-a program that had over 500 majors and over 35 faculty members before being named the Dean of the James L. Knight School of Communication at Queens University of Charlotte. The Knight School of Communication is the only school in the nation that carries the Knight Foundation name. Currently, Dr. Brown serves as the Dean of Liberal Arts at Montgomery County Community College where he oversees 15 departments that span the arts & humanities and social sciences. As Dr. Brown excelled as a teacher/scholar, he became a leader on his campus and in the discipline of communication. Among his many honors includes being named a Distinguished Teaching Fellow and a Distinguished Research Fellow by the Eastern Communication Association, and being honored as a Drum Major for Justice by West Chester University's Frederick Douglass Society.

About the Author and Illustrator

Erika Adams has always been fascinated by how different the moon can look from one night to the next, almost as if it were not one, but many moons. One day she thought, ''What if it really was?''--and so New Moon's Family was born. Erika has degrees from Lake Superior College and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. When not writing, she hosts a storytelling radio program called The Tale Collector. She is also the author of Allie's Adventure on the Wonder, a semi-autobiographical novella inspired by the Lewis Carroll novel Alice in Wonderland and Erika's struggles with Auditory Processing Disorder. She currently lives and writes in Duluth and regularly indulges in anime, vintage science fiction, and Mexican food.

Eric Soderstrom is a Two Harbors native who studied art at the University of Wisconsin. Eric is a self-taught artist of many mediums, a member of numerous art boards, and a volunteer art teacher to elementary school students in Lake County. He participates each year in the ''Chalk a Lot'' event (winning a prize in 2018) and has been commissioned to chalk dragons outside the Big Lake Gallery in Grand Marais, which appeared on PBS's The Slice. Eric now lives in Silver Bay, where he enjoys drawing mythical creatures, being a husband, father, and grandfather, and living with two cats and a pug/Chihuahua, Lily (who is almost dog-like).
