Hello, hello there, in this weeks episode of the reel show we talk about and discuss Star Wars The Phantom Menace and see if it is really as bad as everyone else says. We also have a weekly recc at the end of the episode.
Today on the Reel Show: A treasure hunt, a revenge vow, a noble sacrifice, unrequited love and more than a passing nod to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise – we were promised a swashbuckling Doctor Who Easter special, and it partially delivered. You don’t often get to see the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) sword fighting, we’ve never seen the Tardis open her doors like that underwater before, and there was a satisfyingly huge sea beast for good measure. But it all ended up slightly less exciting than that sounds on paper. It was easier to warm to this episode from the second act onwards, once they had boarded the ships of the Sea Devils. The opening sequence in the village seemed very disjointed. It was raining in the village, but not on the beach, and there didn’t seem to be any set-up for the part with the Tardis crew trapping the Sea Devil in a net, Scooby-Doo style. It was as if five minutes of the episode was missing. The only times “Legend of the Sea Devils” rises above its script and direction are the scenes that progress the Doctor and Yaz’s relationship—and even these scenes are marred because of their placement within the episode.
Tonight on the Reel Show: WrestleMania 38, was the 38th annual WrestleMania professional wrestling live event produced by WWE. It was held for wrestlers from the promotion Raw and SmackDown brand divisions. The event aired on pay-per-view (PPV) worldwide and was available to stream through Peacock in the United States and the WWE Network internationally. It was held as a two-night event, taking place on April 2 and 3, 2022, at the AT&T Stadium in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex city of Arlington, Texas. The card comprised a total of 16 matches, with seven on the first night and nine on the second. In an impromptu match that served as the main event for Night 1, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin defeated Kevin Owens in a No Holds Barred match, marking Austin's first match since WrestleMania XIX. Other prominent matches saw a returning Cody Rhodes defeat Seth "Freakin" Rollins, Charlotte Flair defeated Ronda Rousey to retain the SmackDown Women's Championship, and Bianca Belair defeated Becky Lynch to win the Raw Women's Championship.

Moon Knight is an American television miniseries created by Jeremy Slater for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics featuring the character of the same name. It is the sixth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to be produced by Marvel Studios, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. Slater serves as head writer with Mohamed Diab leading the directing team. Oscar Isaac stars as Marc Spector / Moon Knight, a mercenary who has dissociative identity disorder, with one of his identities being Steven Grant, a mild-mannered British gift-shop employee suffering from blackouts and memories of another life. Moon Knight, the supernatural hero that serves the will of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. He claims Khonshu wants him to be the "moon's knight", the left "Fist of Khonshu", redeeming Marc Spector’s life of violence by now protecting and avenging the innocent. Also starring May Calamawy, Karim El-Hakim, F. Murray Abraham, and Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow.
Tonight on the Reel Show: The 94th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, honored the best films released between March 1 and December 31, 2021, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 27, 2022, by presenting Academy Awards to the winners. CODA won all three awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture, becoming the first film distributed by a streaming service (Apple TV+), the first Sundance film premiere, and the first film featuring predominantly deaf actors in leading roles to win Best Picture. Jane Campion became the third woman to win Best Director and the second consecutive after Chloé Zhao in 2021, as well as the first woman to win Academy Awards for both directing and screenwriting. The Power of the Dog became the first film to win Best Director with no other awards since The Graduate in 1968. Controversy ensued when actor Will Smith walked onstage and slapped comedian Chris Rock in the face during the ceremony, after Rock made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The incident received heavy news coverage and largely overshadowed the rest of the ceremony.
Today on the Reel Show: cue the theme music it’s time for Mortal Kombat! As oft of the video game themed month of March, Mortal Kombat 11 is a 2019 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Upon release, the console versions of Mortal Kombat 11 received generally favorable reviews, which praised the gameplay, story, graphics, and improved netcode. Following Shinnok's defeat, Dark Raiden plans to protect Earthrealm by destroying all of its enemies and making an example of Shinnok; decapitating him. This latter act inspires Kronika, Shinnok's mother and the keeper of time, to rewrite history in order to erase Raiden's interference. Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Raiden appear at the Earthrealm's Special Forces HQ after forging an alliance with Kotal Kahn while Jade and Kitana aid Kotal in protecting Outworld from Kronika's forces.
This week on the Reel Show, it’s another episode of the video game themed month, and the Reel Guys are looking back into Star Wars BattleFront 2 for ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ - Kenobi is an upcoming new television miniseries created for the streaming service Disney+, featuring the Star Wars character of the same name. Set ten years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005), the series is directed by Deborah Chow, with Joby Harold serving as showrunner. Ewan McGregor is executive producer and stars as the title character, reprising his role from the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Hayden Christensen, Joel Edgerton, and Bonnie Piesse also reprise their roles from the prequel trilogy. The project originated as a spin-off film to be written by Hossein Amini and directed by Stephen Daldry, but it was reworked as a limited series by Amini. McGregor was confirmed to be starring in August 2019, and Chow was hired to direct a month later. Obi-Wan Kenobi is scheduled to premiere on May 25, 2022, and will consist of six episodes.
It’s time to look back on the New Year and that means it’s time for a yearly tradition, the review of the BBC Doctor Who New Years special! This year it’s Eve of the Daleks and the Daleks are back, taking on The Doctor and her friends, in a time-loop caused by the Tardis. The Tardis is fractured and healing, and the Dalek Executioners strike on a storage facility to exterminate the Doctor and finally end her 13 lives. The Doctor (Jodie Whitaker) must use the help of her companions and outwit these mechanical monsters and save the day. The Reel Guys break down the episode and use their knowledge of pop culture and Doctor Who to discuss the episode. It’s a time and a half today at the Reel Show as this New Years Special brings all the Sci-Fi, hallway-running and Dalek action that one could want from a Doctor Who episode. With a great Weekly Recc in store as well.

It’s Christmas season and as always, Disney has returned to Holiday festivities with it’s latest offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hawkeye! A show about everyone’s least favourite Avenger, Hawkeye follows Clint Barton on holiday in New York with his family, until he’s roped into fighting for his life alongside Kate Bishop, a wannabe hero and the daughter of a successful businesswoman. The Reel Guys return to break down the story and characters with some banter along the way! Discussing everything from Hawkeye himself, to the villains he faces, Echo, and The Kingpin! Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) must face off against these antagonists in the urban jungle of New York City, on the run from the Russian mafia with Bishop at his side. Helped by a dog who has a fascination for Pizza, Barton becomes Hawkeye once again as he grapples with his alter ego, the mysterious Ronin in a post-Endgame world. Thanos and Iron Man gone - The Avengers are only half-assembled for this 6-episode epic.

With Rowan Atkinson in the title role, English is a bumbling spy elevated to the MI7’s top agent as he must go on a daring mission to stop the evil plans of prison mogul Pascal Savuage, played by John Malkovich. Assisted by his sidekick, Bough, Johnny English slapsticks himself through various encounters as he fights to stop the villain from becoming King of England, and turning the entire nation into one huge prison complex. A loose cannon, English gets into various escapades across the film, and Corey and Murray break down the hilarity, the jokes and gags as well as songs from the soundtrack. It’s all here today as the month of November looks to bring you the most unexpected month of Reel Show content, with a Reel Rating from both hosts and plans for the future - heading into December and the end of the year!

Tonight on the Reel Show, it’s the Halloween Havoc special! As Corey and Murray put on a battle for the ages with the best horror villains around. Monsters and dolls and supernatural beings fight for the right to become Halloween Havoc Champion in this Battle Royal of epic proportions. The winner will go on to face the other winners in the end-of-the-year Grand Slam Match! The finale of Movie Versus will take place in December - but for now, Halloween Havoc will put feared monsters like Jason Vorhees and Michael Myers against Freddy Krueger, Chucky, Jigsaw and Ghostface - with a sprinkling of Candyman and a dash of Leatherface on top. These Halloween film staples will battle each other in heated and bloody combat to determine the winner. With supernatural powers allowed, it’ll all take place on the Reel Show (patent pending) Basketball Court, where all Movie Versus must take place. Who will come out on top in this deadly brawl! Who will be the Final Girl and who will take home the gold?
It’s Spooky Season back at the Reel Show and Corey and Murray are looking at a recent Special from Netflix - On October 5th Netflix Studios in collaboration with the WWE release ‘Escape The Undertaker!’ As the three adventurous members of the pro-wrestling stable the New Day, Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E - enter the mansion home of the legendary Undertaker. The Phenom welcomes them into his home with a set traps and challenges to complete if The New Day wish to get their hands on the Urn. Featuring cameos from the late Paul Bearer, The Undertaker’s manor is full of spooky fog, purple lights and whispering noises. But to capture the Urn, do the New Day have to give up their souls? Murray and Corey ring the bell as they begin their review, recounting the careers of the characters, picking up on references and working their way through the story. It’s the start of Spooky Season here at the Reel Show as Corey and Murray dive into something very appropriate to kick off the season - October’s Lego Star Wars Special - Terrifying Tales! Tales from Fortress Vader. In a post-Rise of Skywalker world, Poe Dameron and BB-8 are engaged in a space-fairing dogfight when their X-Wing crashes on Mustafar. Now at the site of Fortress Vader - they find the former home of the Sith Lord being turned into a luxury hotel, ran by a Hutt and his two alien henchmen. But as the former aide to Darth Vader skulks in the hallway, he reveals three scary tales to the new travellers. Stories of villains like Kylo Ren, Darth Maul and General Grievous. The stories end with The Wookiee’s Paw, about a future that might have been if Luke Skywalker changed his fate and joined The Empire. The Reel Guys break down the characters and the LEGO Sets to be found in this 45-min Lego Animated special, as well as characters and Star Wars facts about the special. Known for his ‘Happy little trees’ iconic hairstyle and laughter, Bob Ross was America’s favourite art instructor and one of the most recognisable faces in television from the past forty years. On his programme called ‘The Joy of Painting’ he instructed the ‘wet on wet technique’ across America and the world. Now his life and times are remembered in the documentary ‘Bob Ross: Happy accidents, betrayal and greed’ that exposes the acts taken by the company ‘Bob Ross Inc.’ after Ross’s death, passing away of cancer in 1995. The company fought to keep Ross’s death under wraps, and now none of his money is earned by his estate or his family. His son, Steve Ross, campaigns to gain back what he lost, and still teaches Bob’s technique to this day with the help of family friend, Dana Jester. The Reel Guys, Corey and Murray take a look through the documentary’s content and themes as well as play some Bob Ross trivia to test their knowledge of the famous painter after watching the Netflix-produced Documentary. It’s no happy accident, so grab your 2” brush and painting knife and get ready to beat the devil out of it!

It’s non-stop deadly actions with Kung-Fu that is both super tough and super deadlier. Bruce U does not need wings to fly, on is da movie and this is serious! This is a wild one, folks, but expect the unexpectable!

Night Book is the occult horror story of a French language interpreter, Loralyn (Julie Dray) who’s working for a Interpreting Agency - having to support her mentally father as her husband Pearce (Akie Kotabe) is away, developing a holiday retreat on an ancient island. Loralyn is then contacted by her boss, Cody, who puts her in talks with a former student - and philanthropist Carl Vito (Colin Salmon) possessing a book, the spirits of the mysterious island possess and murder characters close to Loralyn, speaking the devilish language of Kannar. Murray and Corey review the complicated creative process, other video games of the time and the genre, and how it was directed all during 2020 and what the experience of moving from directing Short films to the FMV Experience.

Night Book is the occult horror story of a French language interpreter, Loralyn (Julie Dray) who’s working for a Interpreting Agency - having to support her mentally ill father as her husband Pearce (Akie Kotabe) is away, developing a holiday retreat on an ancient island. Loralyn is then contacted by her boss, Cody, who puts her in talks with a former student - and philanthropist Carl Vito (Colin Salmon) possessing a book, the spirits of the mysterious island possess and murder characters close to Loralyn, speaking the devilish language of Kannar. Director Alex Lightman speaks to the Reel Guys about his creative process, how he directed it all during 2020 and what the experience of moving from directing Short films to the FMV Experience.
