Hey Shelvies! Welcome to the Shelved Books Podcast, where every writer has a story to tell and it’s not what you think. Every week, we chat with a special guest about what makes a writer shelve a work in progress? We explore what it takes to break up with a story and is it still possible to dust off a manuscript that’s been collecting dust for years. Available wherever you listen to podcasts.
Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we are joined by Sierra Godfrey, author of women’s fiction such as A Very Typical Family and The Second Chance Hotel. As a technical writer by day, Sierra knows how to make complicated subjects more easily understood. But when it came to plotting her first novel, she hit a stumbling block. After first trying to rewrite it to fix the issues, she realized she needed to shelve the story. But she reused the same core sibling premise to write her next book, and that became her first published novel—proving once again that shelved books can be un-shelved successfully. Oh, and she might describe a character development idea that involves your character’s purse or wallet! (It blew our minds!) Come have some fun with us as you listen to our captivating stories and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we welcome Andrew “A.J.” Sass, acclaimed author of MG books like Ana on the Edge, Ellen Outside the Lines, and Camp QUILTBAG. Andrew started his writing career fresh out of law school after realizing that instead of being a lawyer he would prefer to become an author. His first few stories were YA books that he couldn’t finish because of plotting issues. But after registering for a writing class and learning about story structure, he had an idea for an MG story, and well, the rest is history. Our conversation with Andrew also leads us into a wonderful discussion about the necessity for sensitivity readers and greater diversity in publishing. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our entertaining, and at times emotional stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we are joined by Samantha Downing, internationally bestselling author of suspense and thriller novels such as “My Lovely Wife”. Samantha recounts how she was an avid reader from her early childhood and taught herself to write, going through multiple genres before choosing thrillers. As a true pantser, with no use for outlines, post-its, or spreadsheets, she uses only 1 word file the entire time she’s writing her book, and often throws away ideas (90% of them!) after the first 20K if she isn’t happy with the direction of the story. Oh, and she might do something no other author has ever done on the podcast: leave all three hosts completely speechless! Come have some fun with us as you listen to our captivating stories and then share your own! Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we meet contemporary and dark romance author Lyra Parish, aka Courtney Young, and half of the Kennedy Fox writing duo. Unlike other episodes, Lyra’s shelved book story consists of an entire series which she recently retired from her self-published collection. We discuss the reasons why she removed it, along with how she works with collaborators, and the importance of treating your writing like a business. Lyra also offers advice on hiring (and firing) editors and how she keeps track of her finances. Oh, and she may also reveal the trifecta required to succeed in self-publishing. And with 52 successfully published books to back up her claim, we think that makes her the Queen of Self-Publication. Come have some fun with us as you listen to this self-pub masterclass and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we meet Mike Chen, acclaimed science fiction author of “Here And Now And Then” and “Vampire Weekend.” Although Mike has a degree in aerospace engineering, we soon discover that writing has always held a special place in his heart. We discuss his two shelved books, set aside mostly because of plotting issues, and the importance of great critique partners, with whom he refined his outlining skills. He also developed a method for writing that cuts his need for editing: he perfects the first act before moving on to the rest of the book (we will be trying that too!) Oh, and he may reveal how he and his partner, Sierra Godfrey, were the web developers for Jessica Sinsheimer’s famous manuscript wishlist website. That’s right, querying royalty is in the house! Come have some fun with us as you listen to this incredible story and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we are joined by Steve Carman, author of MG sport fiction, including Southpaw Sully. Steve began writing his shelved book on the hour-long train ride to and from work. After querying his manuscript and getting rejections, Steve decided to reach for his true passion: sports. As a reluctant reader himself, Steve knew that a story like baseball star Jim Abbott’s would inspire new readers. And he was right! Even better, in collaboration with his publisher, Elephant’s Bookshelf Press, all the profits from the sale of his new book will be donated to the Sunshine Foundation!! Come learn how Steve believes in Failing Forward as you listen to our captivating and heartwarming stories and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we welcome Wendy Heard, author of thrillers like Hunting Annabelle, We’ll Never Tell, and You Can Trust Me. Wendy wrote her first completed book at the tender age of nineteen with a “very deep” literary novel. After a round of brutal rejections, she stopped writing for ten years, only picking up her author’s pen again with a story that nagged at her, the book of her heart. When that book was rejected also, she decided to read craft books and improve her plotting skills. That’s when she got her agent. Wendy details her plotting system where she plans her story only to the Dark Night of the Soul, and then writes the perfect ending. And oh, do we love Wendy’s book endings!!! Hey Shelvies! On this week’s episode, we are joined by NYT bestselling author of fairytale retellings, including the Lunar Chronicles Series, Marissa Meyer. The first time Marissa attempted a fairytale retelling, she chose the Norwegian story “East of the Sun, West of the Moon,” a story which she loved. From the encouraging comments of fellow writers and her college professor, Marissa thought this could be ‘the one’ that got her published. Until she read “East” by Edith Pattou, and then even more retellings of the same story, all done very well. Feeling disheartened, Marissa shelved the book before it was even finished and moved on to other works. But now, years later, she signed a deal which will include this fairytale expanded in a way only Marissa Meyer can do Tales Retold. Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we meet Jean Oram, the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Hockey Sweethearts romance series. Jean grew up in a small town in Canada, living in an old schoolhouse with beekeeper parents. She obviously soaked up all the romance vibes from that sentimental setting and eventually ditched her sociology degree to pen her first romance. The hosts each vowed to start one and to call it our Justin Project! Come have some fun with us as you listen to our fun and informative stories, and then share your own! Hey Shelvies! On this week’s episode, we are joined by Justin Peniston, a writer for Sonic Prime (2022), Avengers Assemble (2012), and Gormiti (2013). In part 1 of his interview, we learn that Justin discovered his true calling in college: writing comics. After a collaboration with a good friend and artist to create a modern-day dragon comic didn’t get any publishing bites, Justin persevered. His determination led to some attention in the industry, and some amazing projects. You’ll definitely want to hear how the comic publishing industry works, and the number of projects he works on at once (!!)—hint, it requires a spreadsheet. Oh, and Justin really, really hates bananas. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our entertaining and enlightening stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we are joined by the author of romantic suspense, April Hunt, who also writes supernatural romance under the pen name, April Asher. April’s writing life started with a friend inspiring her to write her first romance. Two years later, that same friend would also be the one to tell April to shelve the book and start something new. Thanks to the great advice, that second book would lead to April becoming a published author! And then Covid came along. April needed an escape from the daily strains of her nursing job. An idea for a supernatural romance book came to her, and so was born April Asher! And we are all so glad she was! You won’t want to miss this episode, so come have some fun with us as you listen to our hilarious stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! On this week’s episode, we welcome author/illustrator and debut author of Jack The Library Cat, Marietta Apollonio. Her shelved book story begins with a piece of her artwork that she loves, that she goes back to often, but that hasn’t prompted the written words yet. And it’s all about a dragon! Marietta also discusses the process of getting a portfolio ready and the rationale for using different art mediums. She tells us how an artist would query an agent, what edits notes for artwork look like and what the alterations entail. Oh, and she might also reveal her favorite movie snacks! Come have some fun with us as you listen to our educational and uplifting stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we meet Cliff Lewis, a debut author whose climate-themed MG book brings time travel and science together. Ever since a young Cliff Lewis played Power Rangers in the playground with his friends, he’s had a love for story. He’s also had a love for weird things, which he defines as “quirky, in a Kate Bush sort of way.” When he started writing, he knew he wanted to incorporate some of that quirkiness into his story--that’s where the Lanthorns come in. But he also added some “wild” into it, in the form of a deep-space planet and the fantastic town of Londonshire. And what resulted was a Wild, Weird, and Wonderful Cliff Lewis shelved story, which all the hosts now want to read! Stay tuned for an audio file of the first chapter of Cliff’s new book after the interview, and then share your own story! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode we are joined by Annette Christie, author of the romantic novels “The Rehearsals” and “For Twice In My Life.” Throughout this lively interview, we learn that Annette is an author full of definitions. For example, she is a plotter (an outliner) who writes high-concept (stories with easily understandable, catchy ideas) women’s fiction (women-centered stories) with a romantic theme (as compared to pure romance.) We also discover that her first shelved book was a deconstructed love story (where the plot is reduced to its basic elements.) If you add all that together, it makes Annette not only a lovely and unique novelist, but also a Deconstructed High-Concept Plotter. Oh, and she may reveal her unexpected fear of sports. Come have some fun with us as you listen to Annette’s entertaining stories, and then share your own! We’d love to hear your shelved book story!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we meet Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author, Rebecca Yarros. In recounting her shelved book story, Rebecca explains that she has always been a huge fan of scifi and fantasy stories. In fact, the first serious book she wrote, the novel of her heart, and the one that got her an agent, was a fantasy novel. But for many reasons, publishers didn’t pick it up. The first book she sold was a contemporary romance, and that became her brand, and something she was also enthusiastic about. But a few years ago, the stars aligned, and Rebecca got her chance to return to her first love and her passion, her fantasy in the drawer. And is she ever glad she accepted the challenge! Come have some fun with us as you listen to our entertaining and hilarious stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! On this week’s episode, we are joined by NYT bestselling author of science fiction, fantasy, and Star Wars universe novels, Beth Revis. As a college student with a nominal entertainment budget, Beth explains that writing became her chosen recreation. Her creativity did so well that she ended up writing and querying five completed books. In the years after graduating, and while becoming an official, tenured English teacher, Beth wrote and queried five more novels. Unfortunately, all of them were rejected. It was only with her eleventh novel, the book she considered her “last chance,” that she got her agent. All of us are delighted for her perseverance and conclude that with her ten shelved books, the award goes to… Come have some fun with us as you listen to our entertaining and enlightening stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we are joined by New York Times bestselling author of science fiction and fantasy novels, Maria V. Snyder. In speaking to Maria, it becomes evident that her science background comes through not only in her stories, but also in the way she writes them. When drafting her books, Maria uses her life experience, be it childhood or adult memories, to make her characters feel more genuine. She researches her book’s subject matter both in person and online to be able to write clear details about them. And she also keeps organized notes and plot ideas with a notebook for every story. Oh, and she might give the hosts a mild panic attack when describing some of her past writing deadlines. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our hilarious and instructive stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, multiple-award-winning YA author L.E. DeLano joins us with the story that highlights how, sometimes, editor and writer can see a book differently. After she and her editor decided on her next book, about the richness and intrigue of Irish mythology, L.E. began the writing process, which was then followed by a lengthy and challenging round of edits. And just as L.E. thought the edits were finally done, she was hit with a life-threatening health crisis, a rejection of her story from her publisher, and being ghosted by her agent. Having survived those hard times, L.E. shares with us that when it comes to a shelved book you love, perseverance and the help of family and friends make all the difference. Come listen to our educational and insightful stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! On this week’s episode, we are joined by the award-winning author of “The Disturbed Girl’s Dictionary” and “Beauty Woke,” Nonieqa Ramos. In sharing their shelved book story, Nonieqa leads us into a discussion about the different pathways to a career in publishing and how each writer’s story is unique. Case in point, their own story: from having three “definitely” shelved books early in their career, to attending writing conferences to meet agents face to face rather than querying, to finding a writing mentor in a local librarian. This method, which might have seemed unconventional to some, suited Nonieqa perfectly and led them to find their distinctive and beautiful writing voice. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our entertaining and informative stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book!

Hey Shelvies! It’s almost time to sing Auld Lang Syne and say goodbye to 2022. But before we do, the hosts of the Shelved Book Podcast wanted to remember a fantastic inaugural year with a Top Ten Moments episode. These are the times our guests made us laugh so hard we nearly cried, or the ‘a-ha’ moments that made a concept come alive. Trust us, it was hard to choose with so many amazing guests and incredible moments, and lots of clips were left on the cutting-room floor, but here’s what we agreed on. A special thanks to CJ Edmunds for chatting with us again! And to all our viewers and listeners, thank you for watching and making us part of your week! Wishing all of you a happy and healthy New Year!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we meet Erin Hahn, YA and Adult Romance author of titles such as “You’d Be Mine” and “Never Saw You Coming.” But before being published, Erin wrote a book whose story was near and dear to her heart—the book she thought would be her breakthrough. It had both social and personal meaning and was requested by many agents who eventually sent her rejections. Erin discusses how she made the hard decision to follow her gut with this book, declining to make revisions some agents recommended in order to preserve the novel’s authenticity. And after one last attempt at publishing it years later, Erin had come to terms with keeping this story a shelved book, the book of her heart.

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we welcome Jennifer Probst, New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Steet Journal best-selling author of romance and women’s fiction. Although Jennifer has published over 50 books in her writing career, she has also shelved three, each for a different reason. Whether it was a book full of passion and raw writing meant to learn the craft, or that intimidating book whose idea felt too big for her to write at the time, or an idea based on “The Worst Cooks in America” whose timing wasn’t right, Jennifer freely shares her insights on when to shelve a book and when to pick it up again. Oh, and she might also reveal how she plans on winning Survivor! Come have some fun with us as you listen to our inspiring and uplifting stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we meet award-winning screenwriter and author, Mike Lera. As we soon discover, Mike is a creative thinker who has shelved multiple books and scripts through the years, for very different reasons. This leads to a discussion about how “life’s journey” can take you away from writing at times, how writing a novel from a screenplay can complement each other, and how we shouldn’t be afraid to try different paths to success. Oh, and there’s also a horror story about a teacher… shiver Come have some fun with us as you listen to our terror-ific stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, USA Today Best-Selling author, Bonne Brux, joins us to talk about the hilarious story surrounding her shelved book. It all started with a great idea for a historical fiction: a nanny, lots of children to look after, their difficult widower father to deal with, immigration issues… Boone poured her heart into this story, until she sat down to watch a movie one night. That’s when she understood why this idea sounded so good. Oh, and we might mention our pet peeves about a few reality-TV shows too. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our hilarious stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, author and college professor, Jenny L. Howe, joins us with the hilarious story of her “shelved forever” book which she wrote as two separate halves and could never quite realign properly. We also discuss the joy of finding an agent, followed by the year-long heartbreak of being on submission, which was only made worse by publishers’ contradictory editing comments. Jenny tells us how she rediscovered the joy in her writing by creating the stories she wanted to read and explains how using her authentic voice made all the difference. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our uplifting and thought-provoking stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! On this week’s podcast, we meet Rebecca Podos, an award-winning young adult author, as well as an agent with the Rees Literary Agency. Rebecca’s shelved book idea took flight as a result of a real event called the “aflockalypse,” where hundreds of dead birds fell from the sky. After much research and hard work, however, she realized that although her “tail” had good bones, the plumage was all wrong. And with new feathers in her cap, Rebecca devised the eagle-eyed changes to make the story soar. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our entertaining stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, Young Adult author Kim Karalius joins us with her shelved book about magic, friendship, and bees. We discuss the research involved in writing a book, the time it takes to polish it, and that even when it feels like the perfect time for a story to be published, it might not “bee.” Sometimes, however, as your shelved book sits on its shelf and matures, what might have started as a perfect tale for young adults, could very well bee-come a wonderful adult story. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our entertaining stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, #1 International Best Selling author, Ann B. Harrison, recounts the stories of her two shelved books. First, a romantic tale that Ann loved, but her editor couldn’t connect with, and second, a thriller that her editor loved, but Ann wasn’t confident enough to publish. We discuss author confidence, how it affects writers at every level of their careers, and the fortitude and grit required to keep writing through it all. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our entertaining stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we meet with Danika Stone, an educator, an artist, and the author of many Young Adult and Adult books. Her shelved book story begins with a manuscript she loved, that even her editor and agent loved, but the timing wasn’t meant to be. We talk about the creative versus the commercial side of writing, and how a writer must learn to appreciate both. And helped by Danika’s positivity, we reflect on the shelved book’s journey, hopeful that they are always “en route” to being published. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our uplifting and motivating stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we are joined by Rin Chupeco, a Filipino writer of young adult speculative fiction. As we chat with Rin about how their most recent shelved book was transformed into a published book, we discover that it’s one of many shelved books they wrote over the years. And Rin shares their recipe for success: your work in the present will pay off in the future, because Rin never considers a shelved book as done. It is simply resting, waiting for inspiration to strike. A future investment! Oh, and Kate shares her water-logged creative process also. Come listen to Rin’s thought-provoking story, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, we are joined by New York Times, USA Today, and #1 International Bestselling author, Gina L. Maxwell. In sharing her shelved book story, Gina leads us into a discussion about the power of words and the attachment authors have for their characters over many years, sometimes as long as 14 years! We chat about how letting go of these beloved characters can be hard, whether shelving them or sending them out into the world for publication. And we might even get Gina to tell us what books have made her cry. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our entertaining stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this weeks’ episode, we meet author, singer, songwriter, radio DJ, voice actor, and overall renaissance man, CJ “Caz” Edmunds. His shelved book about a “chosen” boy who learns to use his magic eventually developed into a world full of maps, notebooks, and worldbuilding that seemed too much to handle so early in his writing career. But not before he carefully chose the font, paper, and binding to gift his father with a printed copy of his book. His father’s reaction, and his obvious love for his son, lead to a conversation about parents recognizing talent in their children. Come listen to Caz’s fun and touching story, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

Hey Shelvies! In this week’s episode, our third host, Christine Berman, joins us to relate her shelved book story, and wow, is it a doozie (we mean that literally!) Weighing in at 200K words, this gargantuan YA sci-fi fiction about a “chosen one” power couple leads to a conversation about how fear of criticism can change our writing styles. We also discuss every writer’s greatest fear: computer crashes and stories disappearing into the digital ether. Oh, and Angie shares her secret to keeping hers safe. Come have some fun with us as you listen to our laughable stories, and then share your own! We’re looking forward to hearing about your shelved book too!

In today’s episode, we’ll introduce you to our hosts, Angie Sandro and Kate Evangelista, who both had to make the hard choice to hit “save” one last time on their cherished stories. Angie explains the details of her fairy tale, paranormal, supernatural, alien adventure while Kate shares the hilariously sad tale of a wife and her twin husbands…not all married at the same time, of course. And Alexa? Well, she makes an accidental appearance too!
