The campus is alive and hoping with college students on every corner. What’s scarier to see.. a vampire or your ex?? AH. Halloweekend is an Olympic sport for college students and we are winning gold.

This week’s music was up and down and sideways. Slows from Radiohead and big bops from the B-52’s. Discussed media like Lizzy McGuire(our queen who single-handedly ended homophobia) and Shrek 3…it deserved so many awards. Then gave a life pep talk because we are very qualified at that. And we celebrated the start of Hispanic Heritage Month with Mana and Santana’s Corazon Espinado! Life’s a rollercoaster and so is WDBM 88.9’s The Flashback.

Oftentimes, the best things that happen to us come serendipitously. Whether it be stepping into a little hole-in-the-wall and discovering a community that you didn’t know existed, or following a friend to a club meeting that you didn’t plan on going to and finding everything you were looking for and a seemingly infinite amount of other events like this. These spontaneous moments can bring people who may have never met into each other’s lives.
This style of spontaneity was on full display at birddog.’s performance at the Basement. Liv was first introduced to the zoology student at an open mic event hosted by the UAB at the MSU Union. Their artistry clearly struck a chord, as we welcomed birddog. to the Basement a mere 3 days later. I was unfortunately not able to make it to the open mic event, but the moment I saw his setup — a simple acoustic guitar and harmonica — I knew we were in for a treat.
As soon as he plucked the opening chords to the opening song of his set, “Boys Smoking Cigarettes,” a wave of tranquility rushed over me, reminiscent of the emotions that come to me when I’m hiking in places where there’s no cell service and the only music is that of the birds chirping harmonizing with the howling wind and the percussion of dried leaves and twigs.
At the station, The Basement usually is a massive event. Numerous people come to the station to socialize and converse with each other, with the live music bringing an incredibly unique atmosphere that is nearly impossible to recreate. However, this time, everyone in the Broadcast Studio just sat transfixed, hypnotized by the music pouring out from birddog.’s guitar and harmonica, only interrupted by comments along the lines of “this is incredible.”
birddog.’s music is an amalgamation of his lived experiences. While he is a student here in East Lansing, he came to MSU from Montana after moving there from Texas. He mentioned Texas, where he spent most of his fundamental years, left the biggest influence on his music. His folk and Americana style truly showcases this. Some of his biggest influences, such as artists like Tim McGraw, Luke Combs, Zach Bryan and more, would be incredibly proud of what he’s been making.
Moving across the nation multiple times can make it hard to find a sense of community. Throw in growing up queer in the South, and it adds to the difficulty. However, he managed to find it in a coffee shop in Oklahoma, where his parents currently live. Though he only went there a handful of times, the sense of community that he found there was something he brought with him to Michigan.
The vast beauty of Montana also left a major impact on his music. From working in Yellowstone with the Montana Conservation Corps clearing weeds and restoring a geyser, to a canyon in Bozeman lending its name to my favorite song from his session, “Hyalite.” His love of nature also followed him to Michigan. Though not explicitly about Michigan, “Lake” was also featured in his setlist. When asked about his favorite nature spot near Lansing, he said Sleepy Hollow State Park, which is centered on Lake Ovid in Clinton Township. A great choice given the fact his show in the Basement happened in mid-September. He mentioned that the slightly spooky air lends itself to the immaculate vibes that he loves.
If birddog.’s love for nature wasn’t obvious enough, he also performed a song entitled “Mary Oliver,” a poet who found inspiration in nature and let the natural world speak for itself in her poems. Poetry is also an important part of birddog.’s writing style, as all of his original works initially begin as poems. Once the poems are finalized, he then goes back in with his guitar and harmonica and fleshes out his ideas.
Though music has been a part of his life for most of his life, he released his first song on streaming platforms, “Secondhand,” a mere four days after performing in the Basement. “Secondhand” was initially written as a part of his creative writing final in high school, and he chose to unveil that song first as it’s one of his oldest tracks, as well as one that he feels the most comfortable performing.
Though he may just be getting started as a performer, the sky’s the limit for birddog. If you want to stay tuned to what’s next for him, you can follow him on Instagram at birddog.music, as well as supporting him on Spotify and YouTube.

I never write a blurb for these playlists, I always just post the songs and call it a day. But this Friday I’m feeling different.
I spent all of last night trying so savor my last shift as host of Thee Hourz O’ Power, but I blinked and the next thing I knew it was 2:00 a.m. and it was over. I had something to say at the end of my last shift, in case you missed it I’ll type it here.
I had my first year of college taken away by Coronavirus, so when I showed up on campus at MSU as a sophomore from California, I was lost in a world of people who already knew each other. I was the most alone I had ever been and was seriously considering transferring to a school closer to home, if not at home. Then I found Impact 89FM. Sure, the people here still made a face when I played this scary music but they also accepted me as I was, and I quickly realized I had found a home here. Then I wanted to be a DJ. A couple months passed and that was a reality. Then the job posting for host of Thee Hourz O’ Power went up and the rest is history. Two years later, looking back on it all, I’m not sure if there is anything else to say except thank you. It’s been a privilege and an absolute joy to host this show for all you late night creatures. I hope I was able to put you onto some dope tunes, and if not, then I hope I was able to play some of your old favorites.

What made you decide to join The IMPACT and become a DJ?
I grew up listening to a lot of radio with my family (so much “Who’s it by?” trivia and American Top 40 reruns with the goat Casey Kasem) and I remember thinking it would be so fun to be the one in the booth picking the tunes and talking on air, so I decided to become the one talking on air!
What has been your best on-air experience?
The number of friends/family who called or texted the request line during my first shift – I barely got to pick a song!

What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
Gordon Lightfoot at DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids. I took myself on a date – had a nice dinner in downtown GR, sat in the second row next to some random middle-aged dudes, and did a lot more yelling and standing up than I thought I would. His opener and band were so fantastic and he sounded great! He has been such a huge part of my music journey and I felt so honored to be able to see him in the fall of 2022 before his passing.

Adam’s Playlist:
My summer selections were tailored to the type of summer I had: a summer of discovery. I worked an internship in Austin, Texas, which is 1,400 miles away from home. It was my first time living across the country by myself. I had to go through lots of self-discovery through my time in Texas, but it led to me listening to tons of older music I hadn’t dove into yet. All of the songs on my playlist were either first listens from this summer or were rediscovered and relistened to endlessly over the course of my time in the south.

In the almost four agonizing months I have spent away from East Lansing, I have been conducting extensive mosh research to find the hardest and heaviest tracks to supply to you, the fine listeners of Thee Hourz O’ Power. From old school deathcore to youth crew, crossover to Oi! punk and every identifiable sound in between, there is plenty to enjoy for any fan of aggressive music.

What made you decide to join The IMPACT and become a DJ?
I worked at my high school’s radio station, so joining Impact was a no-brainer. Ironically, the last thing I wanted to do was DJ. In high school, it always stressed me out. People I can’t see are listening… to me?? I returned to my DJ roots after I realized that I missed playing cool music while sitting in a basement.
What has been your best on-air experience?
Before I played a song, I was describing an instrument used in the tune and how although I loved the sound it made, I did not know the name. After the song was played, I got a call telling me all about the instrument. It was the first time I realized people actually are actively listening to what I say, not just the music I play.
What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
I went to Riot Fest in 2020. The most memorable performance was DEVO. I knew maybe two of their songs, but the crowd was so fun it didn’t matter. The DEVO conga lines x mosh pits go crazy.
How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
It’s still up in the air… but I think I would like to work in radio. Every experience I’ve had with radio so far I’ve loved. I love music and working with audio, so I don’t see why I shouldn’t make that my career path.

What made you decide to join The IMPACT and become a DJ?
I am very passionate about music and I thought that being a radio DJ would be very interesting.
What has been your best on-air experience?
I really enjoy when people call or text with requests for me to play on air. I really enjoy knowing that I have people listening and engaging with me during my radio shift and often times they’ll refer to me as my DJ name which I think is pretty cool.
What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
The best concert experience that I have ever had was seeing English Beat. They are just a really great, classic ska band and it was cool to see them live. Also, Jay Navarro and The Traitors opened for them which is another really great ska band and their lead singer Jay Navarro is apart of one of my favorite ska-punk bands, the Suicide Machines. Another amazing concert experience that I had was seeing Danny and The Stools. Even if it wasn’t with The Gories, it was still a really great experience to see Danny Kroha perform alive.
How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
Working in radio has definitely been one of the highlights of my time at MSU so far. I believe that it can help with my public speaking skills and quick-thinking which would translate well into any career.

I would have to choose Jim Morrison. He was extremely intelligent and one of the greatest frontmen in rock history. Jim Morrison was a poetic lyricist and I feel that he would be very interesting to have a conversation with. I would take him to Barrio and we could talk while eating tacos.
What is your comfort TV show?
My comfort TV show is Naruto.It’s one of the greatest anime of all time and it just evokes such strong memories of my childhood.
Favorite College Memory?
My favorite college memory so far would probably be at the first football game of the season. I had gone to the football game and ended up meeting up with some friends who got there early so we ended up getting some of the closest seats. Our team defeated Western Michigan by a large margin, and it was just a great time

What made you decide to join The IMPACT and become a DJ?
When I was younger I did voice overs and always had a dream to be on the radio. I joined impact as a volunteer for music review, graphics, and air staff. Finally I did my DJ training and made my dream a reality.
What has been your best on-air experience?
During one of my shifts I got a message through our request line that someone loves my music taste.
What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
I saw U2 in 2016, the energy of the crowd was the most powerful feeling I had ever experienced. Every song made my body shake, the set design was insane, and the tour was Joshua Tree.
How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
Working in radio will give me the capability to make connections in photography, videography, communication skills, and working in the music industry itself.

I wanted to improve my skills as a journalist and make some new friends!

When my sister texted me after my shift and told me our dog recognized my voice on the radio!
What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
I saw Elton John last summer and it was so great because I love him so much and it was his farewell tour so I wouldn’t have any other chance to see him again. He is such an amazing person and so talented and every single song was amazing.
How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
Being on the radio has improved my confidence and I don’t think it’s something I ever would have considered doing a few years ago. I’ve learned a lot of new skills for inside and outside of DJing.

This week on The Afterglow, we split the show into a vocal hour and an instrumental hour, kicking it all off with JPEGMAFIA’s cover of the Carly Rae Jepsen smash-hit “Call Me Maybe.”
This week on The Afterglow, we split the show into two distinct hours: the upbeat hour and the lullaby hour. We led off with Aphex Twin’s “Ptolemy” and concluded with C418’s “Minecraft.” It’s fair to say that this was a complete show.
This week on The Afterglow was a difficult one, but it embodied the fact that music is one of the strongest channels for healing. What made you decide to join The IMPACT and become a DJ?
In the midst of covid I was scrolling through my online orientation and saw people talking about a student radio station and I thought “That sounds cool.” The I saw someone talking about the radio station wearing a hoodie of a band I like and I thought “This sounds really cool.” And I kept finding it cooler and cooler until eventually it became my job.
What has been your best on-air experience?
Every time someone calls or texts the request line, always nice to know that there’s someone listening to what you say and play on-air.
What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
A hardcore fest called Sound & Fury in 2022. I couldn’t pick a better lineup if I tried, I saw so many all time favorite bands playing to a crowd that loved them. It felt like such a genuine moment in time, it was not corporate at all like some bigger festivals in music. It was so clearly put on by people who love hardcore, for people who love hardcore. There’s such purity in sharing that experience with 5,000 other people.
How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
It has and will continue to give me lasting friendships and experiences that I would never find anywhere else.

What made you decide to join The IMPACT and become a DJ?
I love music and politics, and I decided that people in a music club would be more fun than people in a politics club.
What has been your best on-air experience?
My first time getting referred to by my DJ name by a caller was too cool.
What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
My best concert experience was seeing Thundercat open for the Chili Peppers. As a bassist, him and Flea are two personal idols of mine, and both of them on the same stage in the same night was unreal.
How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
It’s definitely some of the most fun i’ve had at MSU. Hopefully the public speaking experience will come in handy someday in the public sector.

Ducks (I hate squirrels).
Plan a dinner in East Lansing with any person dead or alive. Who would it be? Where would you go?
I haven’t thought about it. I’d probably take another one of my bass idols- Les Claypool to my favorite EL restaurant: Altu’s Ethiopian. I don’t know how Les Claypool feels about injera, but it would be so cool to talk to a pioneer of bass technique like him over my favorite ethnic food.
What is your comfort TV show?
Probably MAS*H. This might be niche but I relate to Sidney Freeman
Favorite College Memory?
Last year’s spring concert probably takes it for me. Really great energy. As an impact member this year I’m hoping this year will be even better.

What made you decide to join The IMPACT and become a DJ?
I love music and writing about it and The Impact seemed like the perfect place for me to surround myself with fellow music lovers. I initially was afraid of becoming a DJ but my role required it so I had to swallow my fears and now here we are.
What has been your best on-air experience?
The day I got a message on the request line from a listener telling me I was doing an amazing job. Compliments on the job are few and far between and that really booosted my confidence in my DJing ability.
What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
I saw a cool Detroit-based indie funk band called Chuck back in high school and it was such a great night. It was at The Loving Touch in Ferndale which is an already cool venue. The crowd’s energy was unmatched and the lead singer Marek was such a charismatic performer. They haven’t put out much music since but I still listen to their self-titled EP and reflect back on that night.
How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
I think working in radio will have positive effects on my future career because I want to go into entertainment journalism anyway, and having prior experience will probably make me stand out against other job applicants.

What made you decide to join The IMPACT and become a DJ?
I fuck with music. I am technically required to have a DJ shift because of my position here but it is a banger of a good time so that’s why I really do it.
What has been your best on-air experience?
When I did a duo shift with DJ Mike Mike Mike and he put me in time out in front of a live on air audience.
What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
When I saw Wu-Tang and Nas live at Pine Knob. I was screaming along so loud I thought I was gonna fucking die.
How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
I have learned a lot about being a leader, time management, professionalism, and confidence. I am a way better communicator thanks to my time here, and that will help me in any career I choose going forward.
