Greetings Black Oak Mine students, staff, families and community. Welcome to Spotlight on Education. My name is Jeremy Meyers and I have the privilege to serve as Superintendent to the Black Oak Mine Unified School District.The Black Oak Mine Unified School District wants to promote engagement at all levels. This certainly includes communication. In this case, we are leveraging technology to share critically important information about public education, in general, and about Black Oak Mine, more specifically.Spotlight on Education is a podcast series we are developing to share information on important topics with everyone in our education community. Topics will range from school financing to student activities and everything in between.The idea is to share information in a way that can be easily “digested” in longer form interview podcasts with subject area experts - those actually providing services to our students and their families. Every month, or so, we will drop new episodes.Eventually, we want to have a library of information available as podcasts. In this episode, we explore school and community libraries with retired Black Oak Mine school librarian and current President of the Georgetown Friends of the Library, Liz Ketelle, and Angela Bernoudy, Librarian of the Georgetown Library.
School and community libraries are an incredible resource - often, an underutilized resource.
Libraries are core to democracy.
Democracies are built on the ability of citizens to educate themselves and make informed decisions. Public libraries are one of the only places where information is free and readily available to anyone who might seek it. This is true of both school and public libraries.
The vision of the El Dorado County Library is to be the hub of the community, providing a welcoming environment to inspire our diverse population to read, learn, and connect. The Georgetown Library helps fulfill this vision on the Georgetown Divide.
Effective school libraries provide diverse and challenging resources intended to support and expand classroom teaching and learning. They support the diverse interests of our students and promote a commitment to lifelong learning.
We want to make certain that our students and citizens are aware of this incredible resource and all that it has to offer.

Our hope is that we share some basic information that inspires you to utilize and support this critically important resource. In this episode, we broadly explore the concept of Community Schools in the State of California. More specifically, we discuss the Community School related activities that have long been in place in the Black Oak Mine Unified School District. Bridget Isham, FAST Counselor, shares the ways that Black Oak Mine supports: integrated support services; family and community engagement; collaborative leadership and practices for educators and administrators; and extended learning time and opportunities.

In this episode, we talk with Bridget Isham, Black Oak Mine’s Family and Schools Together Coordinator - you will more commonly hear this as our FAST program.
Black Oak Mine created this position and program nearly 5 years ago. The purpose of the FAST program is to assist students, their families, and staff in eliminating all of the traditional barriers to full student attendance and academic achievement - things like transportation, food insecurity, access to counseling resources and everything in between. Since its inception, FAST has grown dramatically and now provides a number of critically needed services to the students and families of the Georgetown Divide, including those available through our Community Resource Center.
