The Adventures of Sam Spade, Detective was a radio series based loosely on the private detective character Sam Spade, created by writer Dashiell Hammett for The Maltese Falcon. The show ran for 13 episodes on ABC in 1946, for 157 episodes on CBS in 1946–1949, and finally for 75 episodes on NBC in 1949–1951. The series starred Howard Duff (and later, Steve Dunne) as Sam Spade and Lurene Tuttle as his secretary Effie, and took a considerably more tongue-in-cheek approach to the character than the novel or movie. The announcer was Dick Joy.

The series was largely overseen by producer/director William Spier. In 1947, Spier and scriptwriters Jason James and Bob Tallman received an Edgar Award for Best Radio Drama from the Mystery Writers of America.

Before the series, Sam Spade had been played in radio adaptations of The Maltese Falcon by both Edward G. Robinson (in a 1943 Lux Radio Theater production) and by Humphrey Bogart (in a 1941 Academy Award Theater production), both on CBS.

Dashiell Hammett's name was removed from the series in the late 1940s because he was being investigated for involvement with the Communist Party. Later, when Howard Duff's name appeared in the Red Channels book, he was not invited to play the role when the series made the switch to NBC in 1950.

Christmas Bloody Christmas is a 2022 Christmas horror film that was directed and written by Joe Begos.

Plot.

The film starts with vignettes that resemble the typical Christmas advertisements, along with a news flash regarding a robotic Santa that's been recalled because of a certain malfunction that reverts it from its original programming.

Tori (Dandy), along with her employee Robbie (Delich) closes their vinyl shop. They begin to talk about Tori's Tinder date; Robbie debates that the guy Tori will go out with is secretly a dad to four kids. Tori obliged to Robbie's request not to meet the date and instead opt to go and have drinks with him. Before heading to the bar, they visited their friends, couple Lahna and Jay, owners of the toy shop next door, where another robotic Santa is displayed.

Tori and Robbie gave the couple an opened bottle of liquor and after some banter, they parted ways, with Lahna hinting that their going to have sex in the toy shop.

At the bar, Sheriff Monroe arrived as the duo discussed band albums. Sheriff Monroe laments that he'll be celebrating Christmas alone since he can't bear the spoiled dog his wife left him with, and comments that he didn't know that Tori and Robbie are a thing now. Elsewhere, the toy shop is being observed voyeuristically by the robotic Santa from earlier. It sees Lahna and Jay having intercourse on the Santa display and uses a fire ax to dismember the couple. As Tori and Robbie argue inside Robbie's car, the robotic Santa is walking ominously towards the car.

Tori and Robbie arrive at Tori's house, now discussing which is the best movie in each franchise, including Hellraiser, Aliens, Child's Play and A Nightmare On Elm Street. Tension rises while they are preparing food and they make out, immediately moving to Tori's bedroom. As Robbie performs cunnilingus, the scene is juxtaposed with the robotic Santa terrorizing Tori's neighbor, killing and curb stomping the father on the stairs and killing another one in the bathroom. After a while, Tori heads down to check the nachos they left in the oven, and she sees from her window the robotic Santa killing a kid. She freaks out and starts calling out Robbie; she also wakes up her sister and her boyfriend, Liddy and Mike. They quietly observe Santa circling their household, with only Mike failing to make sense of the situation. Then, Santa throws the body of the father, pinning Robbie temporarily. In the chaos, Santa kills Liddy with a neck snap while Tori and Robbie escape, leaving Mike pleading for his life.

They ran back to Robbie's car while Tori broke down crying as she saw her sister die. Robbie pulls her up and they frantically look for the car keys inside the car. In their panic, they reversed and crashed to a nearby parked car, to which the owner saw. The owner of the car calls the police as he approaches and throws his beer bottle in front of Robbie's car, not noticing the robotic Santa behind him. All About Love: New Visions is a book by bell hooks published in 2000 that discusses aspects of love in modern society. Hooks combines personal anecdotes as well as psychological and philosophical ideas to develop and strengthen her argument. She focuses on romantic love and believes that in American culture men have been socialized to mistrust the value and power of love while women have been socialized to be loving in most situations – even when their need to receive love goes unmet.

Each chapter discusses an aspect of love. First she explains her position and introduces an external work which is primarily about that aspect of love. Then she provides suggestions on how to reverse our cultural training and become more open to giving and receiving love. These aspects are affection, respect, recognition, commitment, trust, care, and open and honest communication - rather than the customary forms stemming from gender stereotypes, domination, control, ego and aggression.

The sequel was first announced in February 2022. It became Simon & Schuster's most pre-ordered book of all time. Hoover wrote the novel as a "thank you" to fans of the first novel.

Premise.

The novel continues from where It Ends with Us ends and centers on the relationship between Lily and Atlas. The novel alternates chapters between the first-person narration of Lily and Atlas.

Reception.

In its starred review, Publishers Weekly called it a "stunning sequel" that showcases "the author's talent for creating nuanced and empathetic characters..." Kirkus Reviews wrote, "Through palpable tension balanced with glimmers of hope, Hoover beautifully captures the heartbreak and joy of starting over." Marianka Swain of The Daily Telegraph gave the novel 2 out of 5 stars, comparing Hoover's writing quality as "closer to Fifty Shades of Grey, a strange mix of twee and graphic, plus the added irritant of solemn therapy-speak pronouncements." Swain also lamented, "She, Hoover, favors blunt dialogue and inner monologues over description, subtext or character development." Alice Giddings of Metro wrote, "While it doesn't have the grit or the emotional pain and catharsis of the first book, Colleen's latest work is exactly what it needs to be, which is the light at the end of the tunnel."

It Starts With Us was named W H Smith's Book of the Year for 2022.

It Ends with Us is a romance novel by Colleen Hoover, published by Atria Books on August 2, 2016. It is based on the relationship between Hoover's mother and father. Hoover described it in 2016 as "the hardest book I've ever written." As of 2019, the novel had sold over a million copies worldwide and been translated into over twenty languages.

A sequel titled It Starts with Us was published in October 2022.

Synopsis

It Ends with Us focuses on Lily Bloom, a young college graduate who moves to Boston and opens her own floral business. She develops feelings for surgeon Ryle Kincaid, who is initially reluctant towards having a serious relationship with her. As their relationship blossoms, Lily has a sudden encounter with her first love, Atlas Corrigan. This reintroduction of Atlas threatens her relationship with Ryle, and forces her to come to terms with the trauma of her past and present. Lily is forced to make a difficult decision when she is faced with an assault and finds out she is already pregnant with Ryle's child. Atlas initially helps her but both decide they cannot be around each other casually. Ultimately, Lily decides to leave Ryle for the sake of her newborn baby. She finds it in her heart to co-parent with him. At the novel's conclusion, Lily runs into Atlas and they restart their relationship.

Reception

In a starred review, Kirkus Reviews wrote, "The relationships are portrayed with compassion and honesty" and concluded that the novel "powerfully illustrates the devastation of abuse—and the strength of the survivors." Romantic Times wrote, "It Ends with Us is a perfect example of the author's writing chops and her ability to weave together uplifting, romantic and somber plotlines. No matter your level of fandom, readers will love and respect protagonist Lily and learn something from her struggles."

The novel won the 2016 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Romance.

In 2021, the novel–and Hoover's works overall–experienced a surge in popularity due to attention from the #BookTok community on TikTok. In January 2022, It Ends with Us debuted at #1 on The New York Times best sellers list. It was #1 on the Publishers Weekly adult list and #1 overall in the first six months of 2022, selling a total of 925,221 units.

Other main cast members from the first film were confirmed to return by November, and the title was announced in May 2021. Where the Crawdads Sing is a 2018 coming-of-age murder mystery novel by American author Delia Owens. The story follows two timelines that slowly intertwine. The first timeline describes the life and adventures of a young girl named Kya as she grows up isolated in the marshes of North Carolina. The second timeline follows an investigation into the apparent murder of Chase Andrews, a local celebrity of Barkley Cove, a fictional coastal town of North Carolina.

By July 2022, the book had sold over 15 million copies. A film adaptation was released in July 2022.

In 1952, six-year-old Catherine Danielle Clark (nicknamed "Kya") watches her mother abandon her and her family due to violent abuse from her husband, Kya's father Paul. While Kya waits in vain for her mother's return, she witnesses her older siblings, Missy, Murph, Mandy, and Jodie, all leave as well, due to their father's drinking and physical abuse.

Alone with her father — who temporarily stops drinking — Kya learns to fish. Her father gives her his knapsack to hold her collections of shells and feathers. The illiterate Kya paints these shells and feathers, as well as the marsh's creatures and shorelines, with watercolors her mother left behind.

One day, Kya finds a letter in the mailbox. She recognizes it as having been sent from her mother, and she leaves it on the table for her father to find. When he reads the letter, he becomes infuriated and burns the letter along with most of her mother's wardrobe and canvases. He returns to drinking and takes long, frequent trips away to gamble. Eventually, he does not return at all, and Kya assumes he is dead, making him the last of the family to leave her alone in the marsh. Without money and family, she survives by gardening and trading fresh mussels and smoked fish for money and gas from Jumpin', a black man who owns a gasoline station at the boat dock. Jumpin' and his wife Mabel become lifelong friends to Kya, and Mabel collects donated clothing for her.

As Kya grows up, she faces prejudice from the townspeople of Barkley Cove, NC, who nickname her "The Marsh Girl". She is laughed at by the schoolchildren the only day she goes to school and is called "nasty" and "filthy" by the pastor's wife. However, she becomes friendly with Tate Walker, an old friend of Jodie's who sometimes fishes in the marsh. When Kya loses her bearings one day, Tate leads her home in his boat. Years later, he leaves her feathers from rare birds, then teaches her how to read and write. The two form a romantic relationship until Tate leaves for college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He promises to return, yet later realizes Kya cannot live in his more civilized world because of how wild and independent she is, and leaves her without saying goodbye.

I'm Glad My Mom Died is a memoir by American former actress and singer Jennette McCurdy about her career as a child actress and her difficult relationship with her abusive mother who died in 2013. It is McCurdy's first book and was published on August 9, 2022, by Simon & Schuster.

Background.

McCurdy was a professional actress from age six until she announced that she had permanently stopped acting in 2017. From 2009 to 2012, she was signed to Capitol Records Nashville, who released her self-titled debut studio album in 2012.

McCurdy had previously written pieces in publications such as The Wall Street Journal and began writing personal essays shortly after. She sent some of the essays to her manager at the time, who encouraged her to write a book about her experiences. Rather than write a book, McCurdy created a one-woman show titled I'm Glad My Mom Died which she performed in Los Angeles and New York City. Plans to tour the show in other cities were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and she decided to write her material into a memoir.

Artwork cover.

The cover features McCurdy looking up and holding a pink urn with decorative paper spilling out. About the decision to use the photo for the book cover, McCurdy told the Entertainment Weekly:

Confetti spilling out of an urn felt to me like a good way of capturing the humor in the tragedy, but I knew I didn't want to go as far as throwing the confetti or jumping in the air with a huge smile on my face or doing any other kind of body language / facial expression that could read as flippant. Ultimately I chose a facial expression that I think reads as sincere, a little pained, and a little hopeful.

Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America is a 2022 book by Maggie Haberman. It covers the career of Donald Trump and his presidency.

Content.

The first half of the book covers Trump's career before his candidacy for the presidency. Sean Wilentz observes that the book "places special emphasis on Trump's ascent in a late 1970s and 1980s New York demimonde of hustlers, mobsters, political bosses, compliant prosecutors and tabloid scandalmongers." The book covers Trump's close relationships with figures of that era including Ed Koch, George Steinbrenner, Roger Stone, Rupert Murdoch, Roger Ailes, Rudy Giuliani, Robert Morgenthau and especially his mentor, Roy Cohn. According to Joe Klein, Haberman describes how "Trump managed to gin his divorce from his first wife, Ivana, into a war between competing gossip columnists, Liz Smith and Cindy Adams," leading to coverage in the New York Daily News for 12 days straight.

Haberman portrays Trump as president as childlike, easily influenced by flattery, obsessed with trivialities, unwilling to engage with the details, and dismissive of advice. Accordingly the executive branch was "subject to the president's whims and moods, his ideas about friends and enemies", and that he "reoriented an entire country to react to his moods and emotions". Haberman concludes that Trump is "a narcissistic drama-seeker who covered a fragile ego with a bullying impulse".

Fairy Tale is a dark fantasy novel by American author Stephen King, published on September 6, 2022 by Scribner. The novel follows Charlie Reade, a 17-year-old who inherits keys to a hidden, otherworldly realm, and finds himself leading the battle between forces of good and evil.

Plot

Charlie Reade is a seventeen-year-old boy living in Rural America with his widowed father, George. When Charlie was seven years old, his mother was struck and killed by a van, and the resulting grief led his father to alcoholism, from which he eventually recovered.

One day, Charlie discovers his elderly neighbor Mr. Howard Bowditch injured in his yard and calls an ambulance. Feeling indebted from his father's recovery, Charlie agrees to watch Mr. Bowditch's German Shepherd dog, named Radar, while Mr. Bowditch stays in the hospital and cares for him when he returns home. Mr. Bowditch shares with Charlie his .45 caliber handgun and a stash of gold pellets that he uses to pay the hospital bills. Several months later, Radar's health has significantly declined, and Mr. Bowditch suffers a heart attack and dies. He leaves Charlie a recorded message, revealing that he was actually 120 years old, and that the locked shed in his backyard contains a portal to another world. In this world exists a magical sundial that was the secret to his longevity. He also reveals the world as the source of his gold and urges Charlie to keep it secret to prevent its exploitation. Determined to prolong Radar's life, Charlie decides to seek out the sundial and revitalize her. Charlie gets attacked by a homeless person with a gun but overpowers and brutalizes him.

Charlie, now armed with two handguns, travels to the other world, which he learns is called Empis. He meets a shoemaker named Dora, and exiled members of the royal family Gallien: Leah, Stephen "Woody" Woodleigh, and Claudia, who provide Charlie with guidance and plenty of delicious food. Charlie learns of Flight Killer, the great evil who purged the royal family. The surviving members of the family were cursed with disability and disfigurement, and the inhabitants of Empis are afflicted with an illness known as "the gray." Charlie navigates to the deserted city of Lilimar and finds the sundial, rejuvenating Radar to her younger self. However, on their way out of the city, they are ambushed by an army of undead "night soldiers." Radar escapes, but Charlie is taken captive to an underground prison called the Deep Maleen.

While imprisoned, he and the other inmates are forced to train for a gladiatorial-style tournament known as the Fair One. Charlie learns from the inmates that Flight Killer is actually Elden of the Gallien, Leah's brother. He also discovers that his formerly brown hair and eyes are turning blond and blue, respectively, which the inmates believe is a sign that Charlie is their true prince and savior. Eventually, enough captives are found to begin the Fair One; Charlie survives the first round, but before the second round begins, he and the remaining inmates escape the facility with the help of a warder named Pursey.

Jackass Forever is a 2022 American reality comedy film directed and produced by Jeff Tremaine, along with producers Spike Jonze and Johnny Knoxville, and was released by Paramount Pictures. It is the fourth main installment in the Jackass film series, following Jackass 3D (2010). The film stars original Jackass members Knoxville, Steve-O, Dave England, Wee Man, Danger Ehren, Chris Pontius, Preston Lacy, newcomers to the Jackass crew, and celebrity guests.

Jackass Forever premiered at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California on February 1, 2022, and was theatrically released on February 4. The film was well received by critics, with many considering it the best film of the franchise. It was also a commercial success, grossing over $80 million worldwide against a budget of $10 million.

Unused footage from the film was compiled separately, titled Jackass 4.5, and released on Netflix on May 20, 2022.

Synopsis.

Jackass Forever does not contain a story but is a compilation of stunts, skits and pranks intercut with on-set talking heads with its cast. The film begins with a tribute to kaiju cinema, in what appears to be a city being overrun by a giant green monster. In reality, it is Chris Pontius' penis painted green over a small set of a city intercut with the cast members running through a life-size set of the same city. The intro ends with the "monster" bitten by a snapping turtle and Johnny Knoxville's intro, "Hello, I'm Johnny Knoxville, welcome to Jackass!"

Stunts and pranks with the main cast include Knoxville facing a bull resulting in dangerous consequences, Steve-O having his penis used as a beehive, Dave England getting pig semen dumped on him, a vulture eating pieces of meat off Wee Man's body, Ehren McGhehey being subjected to painful tests with an athletic cup, Pontius' penis being used as the paddle for paddle ball, and Preston Lacy's testicles being used as a human punching bag. The newcomers are also featured in many of the stunts and pranks, including Poopies fighting off a Texas Ratsnake, Zach Holmes gliding down into a bed of cactuses, Jasper Dolphin being shot off a ramp by large industrial fans while he's holding a parachute, Eric Manaka riding a bicycle full speed into a false wall, and Rachel Wolfson having a scorpion sting her lips.

The final stunt, Vomitron, features Zach, Dave, Eric, Poopies, Steve-O and Jasper drinking milk while strapped to a high-speed carousel. As they start vomiting, Knoxville and the rest of the cast initiate an attack involving paintball guns, a tennis machine and multiple explosions. After assuring the stunt is over, one big explosion is set off, surprising the victims of the stunt.
