Sales and Your Dark Side, Your Shadow!

How does Carl Jung’s concept of the shadow show up in sales? What is the shadow? How can you use it to your advantage? And what do you need to be avoiding?

Listen to a fascinating show with Michael Hanson on the concept of the shadow in sales.

As Carl Jung puts it, “The shadow is that hidden, repressed, for the most part inferior and guilt-laden personality whose ultimate ramifications reach back into the realm of our animal ancestors…

It can now be ascertained on closer investigation that the unconscious man, that is his shadow, does not consist only of morally reprehensible tendencies, but also displays a number of good qualities, such as normal instincts, appropriate reactions, realistic insights, creative impulses."

His three loves in life are people, plants and creativity. He’s a devoted student of each and likes to hang out where they intersect.

Petra Velzeboer is a renowned author, psychotherapist, TedX speaker, and CEO of mental health consultancy PVL.

Born into a notorious cult ‘’The Children of God’’, Petra was raised in a strict environment where individuality and self expression were discouraged. Travelling the globe, she learned firsthand about cultures and people but was sheltered from education, books or friendships outside of the community.

Raised to believe the world was going to end, she took her birthright as god's endtime soldier seriously, turning a blind eye to cruel and unusual punishments, abuse and the fact that the world never did in fact, end.

Leading a double life for many years, she knows firsthand the toll it takes to wear a mask of conformity on one side while leading a hedonistic escapist life on the other.

Eventually the cracks started to show, falling pregnant at 22 and moving to London to start a new life with a boyfriend outside of the community. Life had enabled her to escape and offered up a new path.

In this episode of the show we take a deep look into Petra’s journey, from her time in the cult, to her life afterwards and the struggles she faced along the way, eventually leading her to a life of service and leadership.

Donald Trump! A new format this week and the first time talking about politics on the show.

Michael Chapman and Michael Hanson sit down to have a balanced debate and discussion about this very controversial figure.

But the central theme to the whole debate is dialogue.

In many parts of the world we’ve lost the ability to have sensible discussion about things we disagree with, and when this happens, society begins to break down.

So even though the two Michael’s disagree on many things about the former president, they agree on one thing, differences of opinion are part of life, and they are healthy, when discussed in an open and respectful way.

We hope you enjoy the show. Let us know what you think!

Michael Chapman took the bold step of restructuring his career, life, and goals around his values and faith.

After recognizing his path was leading him away from God and his highest potential, he knew he had to make a change or risk losing a full life lived.

In August of 2017, on the heels of a painful second divorce, loss of a child, and multiple job losses, he decided to walk away from a toxic work environment and 26 years of working for others across multiple industries.

As a father of 4, he walked away with NO job in hand. He answered a call to take his hand, get out of the boat, walk on water, and help others achieve their own breakthrough.

The day he walked away back in 2017, he began looking for a new opportunity on LinkedIn. He had written more than 2000+ journals about his life, losses he had endured, and subsequent learnings in tandem. As a result, he began to share those with the LinkedIn community.

In this episode of the show we discuss all things entitlement, political correctness, masculinity, his journey, and so much more.

Enjoy!

Will Castle is a real estate professional who also works as a volunteer Community Ambassador for the men’s health charity Movember.

In this week’s show we go right back to a short recap of one of our most impactful episodes with Will.

After losing his father to suicide over 12 years ago, Will brushed his feelings under the carpet and kept his story extremely private. Most of his colleagues weren’t aware of what he went through and it was never spoken about amongst his friends.

Ten years later, when COVID hit, Will wanted to do something positive and without understanding the potential impact he could make, started to talk about his experiences with the aim of raising money for Movember.

Later that month, he published a first-hand account of the day itself and raised over £16,000 and was in the top 5 Movember fundraisers in the country.

He now works part time for the charity as a Community Ambassador travelling up and down the country to share his story with the aim of breaking mental health taboos, raising suicide awareness and of course raising much needed funds in the name of men’s health.

To date Will has raised over £25,000.

Outside of his charity work, Will is a husband and a father of two boys. He loves spending time with his family and going to watch his beloved Arsenal Football Club.

Will Castle is a real estate professional who also works as a volunteer Community Ambassador for the men’s health charity Movember.

To date Will has raised over £24,000.

Outside of his charity work, Will is a husband and a father of two boys. He loves spending time with his family and going to watch his beloved Arsenal Football Club.

Ruari Fairbairns is the co-founder and CEO of One Year No Beer, a global alcohol prevention program, aimed at anyone drinking more than 3 glasses of wine a week. Originally from a small island off the West coast of Scotland, in his younger years, he was no stranger to a pint or two. After moving down to London and starting a career as an oil broker, he quickly fell into the ‘work hard, play hard’ style of living.

After meeting his wife, and having a child, his old ways started to wear thin and create friction in relationships as well as cause me a few health problems. Reluctant to blame alcohol for any of these issues, he took an anger management programme where he quickly learned that coffee and alcohol are the two biggest instigators of anger. After reading this, I decided to drop them for the length of the programme (90 days) and that is when everything changed.

Happier, healthier and fitter for being 90 days alcohol and caffeine free, he realised that no one was championing the benefits of abstaining from alcohol – but instead, all of the focus was on how bad drinking was for you. That is when he decided to set up One Year No Beer, a toolkit for surviving modern society alcohol-free.

I absolutely love my current role because every day I get the opportunity to help people and I genuinely believe that this is what I was put on this earth to do. Changing my own relationship with alcohol was the starting point for my journey with OYNB, because this allowed me to create space in my life, to find my true meaning and purpose. I couldn’t believe how much happier and healthier and fitter I felt. It has opened up an incredible life for myself and my family – one of meaning, purpose and ‘healthy’ socialising. One my kids will be proud of and my wife loves being part of.

Sarah Brazier is an Account Executive at Gong and has built a loyal following of over 56,000 followers on LinkedIn. In this chat, we break down this COSMIC post she recently wrote and what inspired it:

"I've been thinking a lot about kindness lately.
Living, whether or not we do it well and with grace, is no easy feat:
there is loneliness,
suffering, and isolation.
This is the human experience John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath documents excruciatingly well.
Good people, wholesome people, people hanging on with their fingernails
fall on hard times,
and in their suffering and sojourn are often met with more suffering - be it at the hands of mother nature, unkind circumstances, or another human being.
There are moments, though, of kindness -
The shopkeeper, who gives the children candy, pretending it costs less than it actually does
Because the father misreads the sign
And the children are starving.
There are moments like these daily
When, caught up in my own self interest,
I fail to maintain the perspective of the burden we all carry
And perhaps, the best thing, the most important, the wholesome and gracious act,
is not to ruminate on my load,
but instead to give as best I can
kindness."
