“Mesquite Media” is a grassroots, community driven media project which provides news, analysis, investigative reporting and entertainment to the Permian and El Paso region. An education project of Sunrise Movement El Paso, Mesquite Media’s audience is both the frontera community of El Paso and the oilfields of the Permian Basin–understood as a single community whose issues and culture cross pollinate. Mesquite Media’s educational materials would inform the Frontera-Permian community on:
-> the political and economic interconnectedness of the region; -> environmental impacts of local fossil fuel industries; -> the local labor impacts of corporate greed; -> the impact of militarization on the region’s working class material conditions; air emission and water integrity reports; and more.
Ana is joined by Creosote and Luis to discuss an episode from the iconic X-Files series: "Darkness Falls." When a mysterious force in the forest mummifies loggers into "insect cocoons," we are left to wonder WHO is the culprit. Aliens? Ecoterrorists? Radioactive Bugs? This 1990's episode is so jam-packed with eco-metaphors that it is spooky relevant to the modern public view on environmentalism.
Eli and Miguel provide an audio tour of the haunted and unfortunately very real place in Midland, Texas -- the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. This haunted psyop is a multi-million dollar monument of oil and gas propaganda in the belly of the beast of US fracking. We take the listener on a guided tour of this spooky institution. Ramon, Andrew and Miguel discuss the "White Truck Rebellion" -- the (eventual) majestic moment oil and gas workers (roughnecks) revolt against their bosses to save the world. How can we build solidarity between the working-class climate movement and the workers within the industry? What's up with the machismo in the oil patch? We review the startling statistics of how many roughnecks are killed on the job. Also, can we be bring Bernie Sanders to the Permian?
