From poetry (don't smirk), art, technology and culture to the absurdity of life (uh, hello Twitter!), join me, Jennifer Kite-Powell - journalist, author and human - as we dig into the absurdity and beauty of life that makes up nothing and everything but most likely something.
Here's a shocking fact: 11% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from materials in the construction industry. What if you could shift that number? Imagine you could do that with fungi and a mycelial network.
In this episode of Tiny Little Victories, meet concerned citizen and entrepreneur Joanne Rodriguez, CEO and founder of MycoCycle. She is tackling the construction waste problem with fungi. Joanne shares her journey on her discovery and idea of using fungi to break down construction waste to remove toxins from construction waste and transform it into valuable low-carbon, bio-based construction materials. Think about it: roofing material being dumped and just sitting there rotting. Then along comes fungi, which do their natural thing of reducing the toxicity of materials and transforming what they consume through biosorption, bioconversion and biodegradation. Joanne shares why she founded the company, how she never stops learning about what fungi can do and how she believes that a bio-circular economy can change our world.

Shalene Gupta is a Minnesota-grown Boston-based writer with Chinese-Indonesian and Indian roots. She’s the author of The Cycle: Confronting the Pain of Periods and PMDD (Flatiron, 2024). She’s also the co-author of The Power of Trust: How Companies Build It, Lose It, Regain It (Public Affairs, 2021). The Power of Trust was nominated for a Thinkers50 Breakthrough Idea award.
In 2022, Shalene was identified as a thinker to watch out for and made the Thinkers50 Radar list. She’s also the host of the Trustonomy podcast, which the Ambies nominated for excellence in podcasting.

On this episode of Tiny Little Victories, Pankaj Srivastava, CEO of Renaissance Park, dropped in to talk with us about an ancient crop that can heal our soil, make stronger products, is recyclable, and helps bees pollinate better (who doesn't love that?).
We're talking about a world where everything starts and ends with the benefits of what this crop has to offer the planet -- industrial hemp.
Pankaj is considered to be one of the most analytical minds in the business, a gifted raconteur, a modern philosopher, and just a downright good human being who the world needs right now.
In this episode, Pankaj shares his philosophy on why ‘yes’ is the way forward, how he judges his success by the amount of opposition he gets and how industrial hemp will make the world a better place. (there's also talk of a family trip to a tattoo parlour)
But first, some hemp talk. Farming hemp uses less water (psst, we are in the midst of a water scarcity epidemic), it is more cost-efficient than cotton and it can be used to make bio-based plastics and construction materials. Hemp is stronger and more durable than wood, it’s recyclable and is priced lower than glass. In 1941, Mr. Henry Ford made a bioplastic Model T of hemp, flax, wheat and spruce pulp, making it lighter than fiberglass and ten times tougher than steel. So why aren’t we using it more? He's got the answer for that and you won't like it. (involves fat-cat industrialists, fear and greed)

In this episode of Tiny Little Victories, Dr. Max Gulde, the CEO and co-founder of constellr, takes us on his journey from scientist to CEO.
While he was there, he created techniques for analyzing previously inaccessible material characteristics during hypervelocity impacts. And guess what? That helps us to improve our understanding of stellar formation processes, such as asteroids colliding with planets.
Armed with a PhD in Physics, Max also created the first ultrafast low-energy electron diffraction instrument, which allows us to see cool stuff at the atomic level.

Jan Ligaard is the CEO and co-founder of Immer Puzzles, fresh out of Copenhagen, Denmark.
The company Immerspiele makes online word games to rival Wordle. A Reddit user said their game MOVES is akin to word chess—you need a strategy.
They launched two months ago and already have 70,000 daily word game players in Denmark. The game is free and you don't even need an account to play it. Currently, there are four addictive games to play for free -- Moves, Stack, Splice, and Middle. To keep people from losing their minds and playing til 3 am, Jan says they designed the game to reset at midnight each night - so once you play, you have to wait a day to play again -- oddly, this makes it more addictive but in a good way.
Jan has been creating beautiful things for the past two decades with breathtaking designs for digital brands.
Jan shares his story behind Immer Puzzles with his co-founder (they were tired of playing Wordle for starters) and how they had to create a new version of a Danish dictionary to ensure that every word, in any form, could be used in the game.

Love and Taxe$ is an unconventional story that unfolds between a CPA and a waitress. Their connection? An annual meeting under the guise of preparing her taxes. Each year, these sessions evolve into much more than number crunching. Set against the colorful backdrop of the 1970s, each of their seven encounters is a mini-drama, rich in emotional depth and character development.

This approach challenges the conventional filmmaking process and creates a masterful dance of performances. The film was chosen to present at the Beverly Hills Film Festival and the Myrtle Beach Film Festival.

Did you know that the European honey bee is known as Apis mellifera in scientific terms? In this episode, I had a chat with two amazing urban beekeepers, Patrick McKannan and Kyle Tindle, who shared their experiences and love for keeping honey bees.
Patrick is not just an experienced urban beekeeper but also a fantastic mentor who teaches beekeeping classes and mentors bee scholarship students at Paul Quinn College in Dallas. He is our bee guru in our journey as new urban beekeepers.
Kyle Tindle is a new beekeeper, and he has fallen in love with the hobby more than he ever expected. Kyle talks about what he enjoys the most about keeping bees, why he started and what he's learned about keeping bees.

Naos Wilbrink joins Tiny Little Victories for a lively and very curvy conversation about becoming a survey pilot, how to make friends when you move to a new country over 40 (tip: it is an LGBTQ church), paradoxes, ChatGPT and pilot training and living in suburban California as a Dutchie. Naos is a technologist and inquiring mind who has always been creating, thinking and exploring. He talks about his yearning to learn to fly and how that experience opened him to more experiences including moving to California with his wife to become a commercial pilot. Ron Sylvester, Executive Producer of the documentary film, Committment to Life joins Tiny Little Victories for the debut of Season 3. Ron is also the CEO of his own Entertainment firm which manages red carpet events in LA including the press room for the Primtetime Emmys.
The film is directed by Jeffrey Schwarz, an Emmy Award-winning producer, director and editor based in Los Angeles. Commitment to Life is set against a Hollywood/LA backdrop and documents the true story of the fight against HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles in its early days to today. Through emotional and uplifting archival footage and interviews with celebrities and activists, the film looks at how a community of people in LA living with HIV/AIDS - doctors, movie stars, studio moguls and activists - changed the course of the epidemic. The film takes a journey through each decade from the 80s to today.
Ron talks about the ideas to make the film from his time on the Board of the AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and about the importance of capturing and reflecting on the oral histories of survivors so their heroic stories can be shared around the world. APLA Health's mission is to restore dignity and trust within underserved communities by providing world-class LGBTQ+ empowering healthcare, HIV specialty care, food, housing and other essential support services.
One of my favorite comments from Ron in the podcast is when he says, "It's not what you do from 9 to 5 that defines you, it's what you do after five that does."

In this episode of Tiny Little Victories, I talked with Mark Greget, Founder and CEO of NuEyes. This tech company focuses on creating vision-assisted wearables for people with low vision. NuEyes also has a new product for surgeons and ophthalmologists called NuLoupes. It turns an analog pair of loupes into a powerful magnification loupe with an augmented reality overlay. I met Mark ten years ago in California and have been impressed with his singular focus on helping people with low vision see clearly. He and his untraditional yet highly scientific and technical geniuses, including a man who wears a kilt, have helped thousands of people see colors and depth again. Mark talks about all the lessons learned and why he feels so passionately about doing things the right way.

Darryn addresses the importance of food security, how the pandemic showed a real vulnerability in our food supplies, how consumer consumption drives the types of tomatoes grown (snackable tomatoes), and some exciting stories from tomato growers in Mexico.

Anco Scholte ter Horst is the co-founder and CEO of Freedom Internet in the Netherlands. But he wasn't always in this line of work, in fact Anco's background runs the gambut from software architect to CFO to entrepreneur. And it's a lot - from the books we read and the state of politics today to how we can use new technology like AI to focus on productivity and rely on a person to give it the human. We also touch on his early obsession with Freud and how that led him to where he is today. After decades in journalism, Harrison is now a senior comms specialist at Boise State University and is a much-needed voice of reason around Boise.

I met Anna when she was working in high-tech marketing and PR and was always impressed with how she should tell a story for her client without making it sound like a sales pitch. Anna chose to walk away from her successful career in Tech PR to pursue work she felt was more meaningful to her and others. Anna works with clients through her firm, Coach Anna, to help them find the best version of themselves. In this episode, Anna talks with me about why she loves inspiring people and how sometimes you must break your eggs to get where you want to be.

Imagine you are a journalist, writer, host, producer, illustrator, and AI expert, and you exist here and now on this earthly plane. Now imagine you have access to this person right now on Tiny Little Victories. Meet Jamillah Knowles. She is all those things, yet those titles only scrape the surface of her ingenious mind. She's happily an ardent feminist whose father taught her to code when she was seven. She worked on User Generated Content before it became a thing.
This brings us here -- to bear witness to the conjunction of all her expertise and talent - dishing up elevated tech and AI expertise alongside her decades-long passion for art and illustration. It's a perfect storm. In this conversation, Jamillah talks about how she arrived at this point and the reasons that led her here. In the case of her AI degree, it was driven by a need to silence people and their skepticism that a woman could understand and apply AI, but also because she always had a passion for how to use emerging technology; after all, she was the host of a show that brought new technology to your brains. We talk about the ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of AI, why there is no more nuance anymore, how all robots don't have AI, and one of her most exciting projects with an arts organization that's using AI to understand the behavior of cats.

I first met Joe in Amsterdam in 2008 when he was speaking on the multiverse at Mobile Monday. This episode is the story of a man - Dylan Cline - who wanted to create an event for his community with a potato for all those couch potatoes sitting at home on New Year's Eve. This is about the Idaho Potato Drop in Boise, Idaho, each New Year's Eve since 2013. In fact, this potato is not only a glowing wonderous 2,500-pound fiberglass potato replica (move over Madame Tussaud) - but it's also famous because it has appeared on CNN's New Year's Eve countdown. Let's face it an 18-foot long, 10-foot wide glowing spud with 10,000 LED lights that is WAY more creative and fun than a stilly little sparkling disco ball (sorry, NY, but come on, really? A disco ball?)
Dylan talks with Tiny Little Victories about all the hurdles he had to jump over and through to make this even happen, including the City of Boise NOT wanting him NOT to do the event and focus on the potato, the engineering and technology he had to learn to get this hunk of brown fiberglass 120 feet up in the air and how he was able to get a 40K to turn out on year one through right now -- it is truly a story of hundreds of tiny little victories. It doesn't hurt that Dylan's personality is incredibly addictive and he has so much passion for creating a community for the town he grew up in -- it makes you want to book a ticket to Boise for New Year's Eve 2023. (They also have a VIP lounge and pro skiers who ski off ramps downtown through flaming hoops in the Urban Air ski and snowboard jam.)

I have known Hillel since 2010 when we worked on Primesense, a startup at the head of the pack of natural interaction technology (think Xbox Kinect and gesture recognition). Today, Hillel is the founder of the BALD Agency, a creative and branding agency in Atlanta, Georgia.
Hillel talks about how his existential crisis after becoming a CMO led him to realize that he wanted to be the guy helping companies tell their story through their brand - and BALD was created. In Episode four of Tiny Little Victories, I talk with Alexis Nicole Smith. the founder of Ocotillo Botánica in Marfa, Texas. Marfa is a surreal place, laying in what was once the ocean floor, and now home to under 2,000 people with 19 art galleries, multi-generational ranchers, artists, writers, entrepreneurs and those who just want to be there. From the infamous Marfa lights to the permament land art project Prada store that never open, Marfa has a unique vibe that is all its own.
Alexis' store in Marfa is Ocotillo Botánica and it is a special space - it brings together the beauty of desert plants from the Chihuahuan Desert in the art of healing. The company was founded on the idea that we need not go far to find the magic we need. The store carries a few vintage cowboy boots (from Lucchese!) and unique art from local artists, from sculpture to statement jewelry crafted from metals and stones designed to impart a sense of calm, healing, or joy. But the main focus of the store is healing with a variety of herbs as part of her apothecary offering. Alexis offers an array of healing and cosmic services such as plant spirit healings, tarot readings, sound therapy and spritual workshops. We talked with Alexis about how we all relate through our feelings, how she had to step into her authenticity to make the space become what it is today and the power of self-reclamation.

Welcome to season 2, episode 1 of Tiny Little Victories. In this episode - Circularity and planet earth, I talk to the Dutch entrepreneur Martijn Tjho. Martijn is the founder of BIYU (Bob is your uncle) - a disruptive and much-needed company that wants you to own less and do more. The concept behind BIYU circularity at its best -- giving access to the best products when consumers need them instead of buying them. In a recent Forbes article I wrote about the circular economy, the world economy is only 8.6% circular. Four years ago, in 2018, that number was higher, at 9.1%. Do you really need to buy a chainsaw to chop down that tree when you can get temporary ownership (no deposits) for a few hours and return it? Martijn says BIYU gives companies a platform for circularity while consumers have access to temporary ownership of products rather than buying them. At the end of the product's lifecycle, BIYU recycles them. In this interview, Martijn calls us from Costa Rica, where he is working on his other company -BIYU Habitats - designed to create and build habitats from recycled and upcycled materials, including water. In this interview, we talk about how changing behavior is one of the hardest things you will do, why investors still don't see the long game when it comes to making financial decisions that are good for our planet and why failure can be a tiny little victory.

In Episode 5 of Tiny Little Victories, I catch up with the tech entrepreneur turned real estate entrepreneur, Philip Hordijk. Philip is from The Netherlands but lives in Tribeca with his fashion entrepreneur wife and two adorable children. But it was a long road to where he is today - starting from his first tech start-up Mappy Friends, which he started while living in Argentina in 2008. Philip then worked the start-up scene in Europe in a pre-app world when start-ups were fixated on location-based services and social networking in real-life apps. Through a series of twists and turns and his sheer determination (one might say perseverance), Philip created NY Casas in 2012, a bespoke real estate agency where he exploited Google Adwords to get his new company to the top of search for Spanish and Portguese in under a month. Today in 2023, NY Casas is now Leven Real Estate, a nod to the Dutch word leven - 'to live.'

Will shared some of his travel stories from his time on a train from Russia to China with a guy named Oleg and a Mongolian family - six hours in a train car, and no one spoke English. What did Will do? He opened a journal where everyone could communicate via drawings and matching words in each of their languages. Kyle shares his tiny victories, from his detour as a flight attendant to his passion for travel with his partner Kyle. In Episode 3 of Tiny Little Victories, I talk with Hanna Manninen about her most fulfilling role today: art gallerist. Hanna worked for decades in the tech industry, elevating people and brands through her unique blend of public relations, marketing, and brand design. It even surprised her when one day, after returning to her hometown of Oulu, Finland, after years abroad that she was approached to buy into an art gallery. The rest is history, and Galleria MABD was formed with her sister (sister power!). Despite not having a traditional art background, Hanna has approached the new world order of her gallery differently - to make it the most approachable gallery for anyone. She even leaves the lights on after the gallery closes for anyone walking by or sitting on a bus at a red light can gaze and connect to the art. We talk about why the metaverse isn't always the answer, art should be approachable, and how she wants to make Oulu, through MABD, a culture capital by 2026. Orly has been a marketing and communications expert for decade starting in the burgeoning interactive TV and telecommunications market in 2000. As her family grew, Orly and her husband Sefy Ariely moved to Tenafly, New Jersey opening up opportunities for themselves in their careers and their family. Orly transformed her career from communications to digital web expert to flight attendant for El Al. Orly now lives in Israel with her husband and her two teenagers with two giant Bernese Mountain Dogs.
