ਸੁਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਸਾਲ 1896 ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਆਲਕੋਟ (ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ) ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਸਲੀ ਨਾਂ 'ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬਦਰੀਨਾਥ ਭੱਟ' ਸੀ। ਲਾਹੌਰ ਦੀ ਉਰਦੂ ਪਤ੍ਰਿਕਾ 'ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਦਾਸਤਾਂ' ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਈ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਛਪੀਆਂ । 'ਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਜਿੱਤ' ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬਦਰੀਨਾਥ ਭੱਟ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਸੀ, ਜੋ 1920 ਵਿਚ 'ਸਰਸਵਤੀ' ਵਿਚ ਛਪੀ ਸੀ।। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਟਕਥਾ ਅਤੇ ਗੀਤ ਵੀ ਲਿਖੇ ਹਨ । ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਲਗਭਗ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਦਰਸ਼ਵਾਦੀ ਹੱਲ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ।

ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ 1947 ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਈ ਭਾਰਤ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਉੱਜੜੇ ਪਰ ਉੱਜੜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਸੇਬਾ ਕਿੱਦਾਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ-ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਤਕਲੀਫ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲੇ। ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੜਨ ਦਾ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਦਿਨ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ।

Munshi Premchand (1880 – 1936) needs no introduction. In“Bade Bhai Sahab”, Premchand turns his gaze to an intimate portrayal of the affection and rivalry between two brothers who live in a hostel away from home. Bhai Ghaniya (1648-1718), was a disciple of Guru Teg Bahadur. After the martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji his son Guru Gobind Singh raised Khalsa to fight against Mughals for restoration of human right, freedom of religion, equality and justice.
During the frequent battles between the Sikhs and the tyrant Mughals, Bhai Ghaniya Ji was often seen carrying a water container made of animal skin (mashak) to serve water to anyone who was thirsty in battle field. ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ, ਕਹਾਣੀ-ਸ਼ਿਲਪ ਦੀ ਉਮਦਾ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਹੈ। ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਇੰਨੀ ਸਹਿਜ ਕਿ ਦਿਲ ਅਸ਼ ਅਸ਼ ਕਰ ਉਠਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਪੱਖੋਂ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਕਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਮੰਟੋ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ। ਉਹਦੇ ਪਾਤਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਮਜ਼ਾਂ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਦਿਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਅਰੁਕ ਸਿਲਸਿਲਾ ਰਚਨਾ ਦੇ ਅਖੀਰ ਤੱਕ ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਸਾਡੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਲਈ 11 ਮਈ ਦੀ ਸਵੇਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਉਦਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਈ।ਮਾਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਲਾਡਲੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਮਹਾਨ ਕਵੀ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਸਦੀ ‘ਚ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੇ ਯੁੱਗ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਪਾਤਰ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਚਲਾਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਖਲਾਅ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੁੰ ਭਰਨਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
ਸੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੇਖੋਂ ਹੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਦੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਵੀਹਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸ਼ਾਇਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੱਤ ਚੋਟੀਆਂ ਹਨ: ਭਾਈ ਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ, ਪੂਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ, ਅੰਮਿ੍ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ, ਮੋਹਨ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕੁਮਾਰ, ਪਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਪਾਤਰ।
ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਲਜੇ ‘ਚ ਹਰ ਪਲ ਵੱਜਦੀਆਂ ਛੁਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਪੀੜ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਮੋਅ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਮੋਤੀਆਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਜੋਅ ਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਰੂਬਰੂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦਾ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ਸ਼ਾਇਰ ਸੀ ਸਾਡਾ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਪਾਤਰ। ਇਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸ਼ਾਇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਤਰ ਹੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਨੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਸ਼ਾਇਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੁੱਖ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ “ਹਵਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਹਰਫ਼”, “ਬਿਰਖ ਅਰਜ਼ ਕਰੇ”, “ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਲਗਦੀ ਵਰਨਮਾਲਾ”, “ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ”, “ਪਤਝੜ ਦੀ ਪਾਜ਼ੇਬ”, “ਸੁਰ-ਜ਼ਮੀਨ”, “ਚੰਨ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੀ ਵਹਿੰਗੀ’ ਆਦਿ ਹਨ| ‘ਹਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਹਰਫ਼‘ ਦੇ ਛਪਦੇ ਸਾਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਝੰਡੇ ਗੱਡੇ ਕਿ ਚਾਰ ਪਾਸੇ ‘ਪਾਤਰ, ਪਾਤਰ ਹੋ ਉਠੀ‘ ।ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਪਾਤਰ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ 1993 ਵਿੱਚ “ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਲਗਦੀ ਵਰਨਮਾਲਾ” ਲਈ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ 1999 ਵਿੱਚ “ਭਾਰਤੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਪਰਿਸ਼ਦ ਕਲਕੱਤਾ” ਵਲੋਂ “ਪੰਚਨਾਦ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ” ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ| ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ2012 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ‘ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ’ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਧੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਨਾਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ।ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਬੇਪਨਾਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ।
ਪੰਜਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਹਣੀ ਸੁਖ਼ਨਵਰੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਸਰੋਤ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿਣਗੇ।

'ਸ਼ਾਨੇ-ਪੰਜਾਬ' ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕਹਾਣੀਕਾਰ 'ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਢੰਡ' ਦੀ ਵਕਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ਸ਼ੀਲ ਅਤੇ ਅਣਖੀਲੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਲਿਖੀ ਇੱਕ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ 1980ਵਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਛਪੀ ਸੀ। ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਢੰਡ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਇਸ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਰੂਹ ਨੂੰ ਫੜਨ ਦਾ ਯਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਅੱਜ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਮਾਨਸ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਲੰਘ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਇਸ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਲਾ ਦਰਦ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਬਾਸ਼ਿੰਦੇ ਹੰਢਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਬੱਸ ਹੁਣ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਰੂਪ ਹੀ ਬਦਲੇ ਹਨ।

ਅਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ 'ਇੱਕ ਪੈਰ ਘੱਟ ਤੁਰਨਾ'। ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਾਦਿਲ ਪਾਤਰ ਰਸ਼ੀਦ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਘੁੰਮਦੀ ਹੈ। ਰਸ਼ੀਦ ਨੂੰ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਰਸ਼ੀਦ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਣ ਤੋਂ ਝਿਜਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਰਸ਼ੀਦ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਤਨੀ ਛੇ ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਰ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਹੈ। ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਬੇਟੇ ਨੂੰ ਰਸ਼ੀਦ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਦੱਸਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਅਸਤੀਫ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਘਰ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਸਮਾਨ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਕੁਝ ਕਬੂਤਰ, ਤੋਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਬਿੱਲੀਆਂ ਰੱਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਿਆਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਫੁੱਲ ਬੂਟੇ ਲਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿੰਨੀਆਂ ਨਿਆਮਤਾਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜੇਕਰ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਛੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਵਾਲੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਾ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਸਾਰੀ ਖ਼ੂਬਸੂਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣੇ ਬਗ਼ੈਰ ਹੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਸੀ।
ਅੰਤ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਚੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਤੰਗ ਉਡਾਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਦਮ ਤੋੜ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇੰਞ ਰਸ਼ੀਦ ਹੱਸਦਿਆਂ-ਖੇਡਦਿਆਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਾ-ਦਿਲੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਕਬੂਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
