In Episode 151, Lauren sits down with Denvil Lee, Campus Pastor at The Chapel Lake Zurich. Denvil shares his incredible journey from working at McDonald’s, to retail leadership, to serving as a police officer, investigator, and detective, before eventually stepping into church leadership and pastoral ministry. One of the most powerful themes throughout the conversation is how Denvil approaches each role with a heart to serve and invest in people - often spending only a short time at the top before returning to walk alongside others, mentor them, and help raise them up.
Together, Lauren and Denvil explore why true leadership is more about faithfulness to the process than chasing outcomes, how God’s Kingdom often begins with small seeds, and why being entrusted with small things matters deeply.
Denvil also opens up about his personal faith journey from atheism and agnosticism to encountering God while cleaning the back of a church. Through moving stories and honest reflection, he reminds listeners that it is a joy to be found by God and that God is more than we can dream or imagine.
This episode is a powerful encouragement for anyone searching for purpose, learning to trust God in small beginnings, or wondering if they can still be found by Him.

In Episode 149, Lauren sits down with Marcy Bursac, adoptive mom, author, national advocate, and founder of The Forgotten Adoption Option, to talk about what happens when adoption isn’t Plan B…but Plan A.
Marcy shares how a visit to Moldova changed the trajectory of her life and led her to the desire to adopt. But when she stepped into the U.S. foster care system to adopt a sibling pair, she encountered something she didn’t expect: confusion, delays, misdirection, and a lack of clear guidance. Like many prospective adoptive parents, she found that while adoption from foster care is publicly encouraged, the pathway toward actually adopting can feel unclear.
Out of that frustration and deep love for children waiting for families The Forgotten Adoption Option was born. As a national 501(c)(3), the organization exists to close the gap between awareness and action. Marcy explains how thousands of adults raise their hands to adopt, only to be rerouted into foster licensing processes without clear communication about what adoption specifically requires. That disconnect leaves families discouraged and children, especially sibling groups, waiting longer for permanency.
In our conversation, Marcy shares:
Through books for adults and children, a free adoption planning app, a nationally distributed reading program, research, coaching, and her own podcast, Marcy has supported more than 12,000 prospective adoptive parents across the United States.
If you’ve ever wondered whether adoption might be part of your story or you simply want to understand the reality behind foster care adoption, this conversation will move you from awareness to action.
Because sometimes the stranger you’re meant to meet becomes family.

In Episode 148, Lauren interviews Dr. Paul Falkowski, Founder and President of the National Association of Long-Term Care Volunteers (NALTCV) and explores the quiet, powerful impact of showing up for senior citizens — one visit at a time.
Paul shares the remarkable origin story of his organization, which began not in a boardroom, but while serving as a choir director. After a visit to a local senior care facility, Paul quickly learned that there was a need for one-on-one visitors for the seniors. What started as simple, one-on-one conversations grew into a national movement equipping volunteers and care staff to bring authentic human connection into nursing homes and senior living communities.
In the conversation, Paul addresses a common fear: “What do I say?” or “What if it’s awkward?” He gently dismantles those concerns, explaining that seniors are looking for authentic connection. He also highlights a sobering reality: nearly half of the 1.5 million people living in U.S. care communities receive no visitors at all. Yet, Paul believes this story can change when people step beyond their comfort zones and choose relationship over hesitation.
As an Air Force veteran, Paul brings a unique depth to his work, sharing unforgettable stories of connection, wisdom, humor, and humanity from the senior generation — stories you only hear when you’re willing to step to the margins of society.
This episode is a powerful reminder that you don’t need perfect words or a grand plan to make a difference. Sometimes all it takes is a willing heart, a listening ear, and the courage to walk toward those who are too often forgotten.

In Episode 41, Lauren invites you to experience your own strangers on the way activation. Get a piece of paper and a pen and jump into this healing experience.
In just a moment, there will be an opportunity for you to reflect on the people and places in your own story. Think of the name of a friend, a family member, a person or a leader in your life who describes a specific attribute. On a sheet of paper, write down the name of that person. It's recommended you move through the list quickly and go with your first instinct. If you think of the same person for multiple questions, that is okay. Write that person’s name down on multiple lines.
Ready…set…go!
1. Who is the most loving person you know?
2. Who is the boldest person you know?
3. Who is the gentlest person you know?
4. Who is the most loyal person you know?
5. Who is the most peaceful person you know?
6. Who is the smartest person you know?
7. Who is the most generous person you know?
8. Who is the most willing person you know?
9. Who is the most reliable person you know?
10. Who is the most trustworthy person you know?
11. Who is the funniest person you know?
12. Who is the most patient person you know?
13. Who is the coolest person in you know?
14. Who is the most optimistic person you know?
15. Who is the most fun?
16. Who is the most creative person you know?
17. Who is the humblest person you know?
18. Who is the most forgiving person you know?
19. Who is the most encouraging person you know?
20. Who is the most authentic person in your life?
21. Who is the strongest person you know?
22. Who is the most fatherly person in your life?
23. Who is the most motherly person in your life?
Now imagine the faces of all these people you just listed in your mind. All their best characteristics give us a glimpse into the face of Jesus. Jesus is loving and gentle and bold and strong and authentic and funny. He is the sum of the best people we know — plus a million times more.
As you were going through the list, did you notice some blank spots? That’s okay. These are simply aspects of Jesus that you haven’t experienced yet. Scan through your list and notice which characteristic is highlighted to you most, the one you are most longing for.
Take three deep breaths and let your body sink into your chair. Ask God, “God, how are you the most [insert characteristic] in my life?” and wait for his reply. If it helps, picture yourself sitting on a bench with Jesus as you ask that question.
Thank you for taking this journey with me. It is just the beginning for you and I believe the best is yet to come.

With a big smile on his face, he takes the key and places it into the door of your heart. He unlocks the door and together, you walk inside. What do you see? Ask Jesus what he wants you to know.

If you have been pouring out your heart to God, praying the same unanswered prayer over and over, I want you to take heart. God sees. God knows. God cares. Just because you don’t see an answer doesn’t mean he’s not working in the background. My prayer for you today is that he sends you someone like Bruce to encourage you to keep pressing on.

He longs to fill you up with love and hope and joy. Pour your heart out to him today. He treasures your thoughts. He honors your tears and your pain and your laughter and your joy. He treasures everything about you. And just as Jesus pursued us in the greatest way 2,000 years ago, he continues to pursue you every day of your life. Keep your eyes open for the ways he is pursuing you today.

Henri Nouwen said, “All human beings are alone. No other person will completely feel like we do, think like we do, act like we do. Each of us is unique, and our aloneness is the other side of our uniqueness. The question is whether we let our aloneness become loneliness or whether we allow it to lead us into solitude.” Is God inviting you into solitude today? How can you carve out a few moments with him to invite him to speak to your heart?

If the name of a friend pops into your head today, or you notice a stranger while you’re out and about, ask God if he may want to share some word of encouragement with them. Pause, breathe, and listen. You may see a picture in your imagination or a word may come to mind or you may sense something in your gut. And then take a risk and share it. If you tell the person and it doesn’t resonate, that’s okay — you just encouraged them, and don’t we all need a little more encouragement? But if it did resonate, it may change their entire view of God’s love for them or help them walk into the destiny God has planned for them — and isn’t that totally amazing?

The best way to overcome the shame or guilt that can seep in when we fail is to forgive – ourselves and others. Invite God to show you if you have forgiven yourself for your past failures. Invite him to show you if there are others you haven’t forgiven. Forgiveness is one of the greatest keys to mental and emotional wholeness. It is an act of the will and not necessarily a feeling. Often when we make the decision to forgive, feelings will follow. Take a few deep breaths and ask God if there is anyone he is inviting you to forgive today (including you!)
Who is God inviting me to forgive today?
Y – YieldI invite you to pray this prayer with me: God, thank you for your grace and mercy and love. I choose today to forgive myself and to forgive those who have hurt me. I ask for your forgiveness for my failures and I receive it with gratitude. Thank you for the grace to help me let go of the past. I choose to bless myself and the people who have hurt me (you may want to list them by name out loud). God, will you please show me how you see me and how you see those who have hurt me? (Pause – he may show you an image in your imagination or give you a song or point you to a scripture). God, would you please remove shame and heal my heart? Thank you God that your mercies are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In this trailer episode, Lauren cites a recent article in the New York Times that discovered a significant impact strangers have on our lives. Researchers found that connections with strangers, which they called weak ties, gave people a feeling that they belonged to a community larger than themselves (rather than strong ties with people like family members and close friends). Throughout the pandemic, we've been isolated in our homes and are re-learning to come back out into community. There is a great opportunity to take risks by meeting people in a way that we aren't getting as often as we used to pre-pandemic.
Based on the best-selling book Strangers on The Way, author Lauren Hansen tells inspiring, humorous and life-defining stories with strangers she has met across the world on this podcast.
