Brain Fry (Fried Chats with Mram): Recent Episodes

Brain Fry

Hello & welcome to Brain Fry! A podcast created as a homage to shower thoughts, those 3 am after-party chats that can get a bit weird but also be really introspective. I'm the host Mram, I'm a neuroscience student studying in Scotland and in my final years of university I want to use this podcast to explore social issues, cool science and delve into some brain-frying chats. I hope to create "entertaining content with value" so if you're down for the ride, let's dance :)

Today the Forbes featured international yoga & meditation teacher and founder of the Wild Yoga Tribe Lily Allen-Duenas is here to help us learn to be more "present". Being relentlessly busy is useful for escaping the unsettling chatter of the mind. It's a void that can be unbearably boring while simultaneously scary as it leaves room for fear & self-doubt to foster. The price to pay is feeling that time is "flying by too fast". Being present helps us to savour the good moments for longer whilst not allowing the bad ones to have emotional power over us.

Which is why with over 650 hours of training, Lily shares her wisdom on how to meditate (& let's face it make it stick), its biological benefits as well as dive into an interesting rabbit hole about the history of yoga venturing from hieroglyphics in Ancient Egypt to new Celtic yoga.

Time stamps:
02:45 - lily's background & starting The Wild Yoga Tribe
06:43 - myths about monks & meditation being "calm & peaceful"
11:43 - don't play whack-a-mole with your thoughts, it only makes them stronger

16:01 - It’s not about control, rather learning to live with uncertainty
17:10 - tips to integrate meditation (& enjoy it!) 20:24 - history of yoga: from India to hieroglyphics in ancient Egypt

I used to associate weightlifting competitions with heavy metal, Red Bull, and a swarm of intimidating people screaming and hurling weights around. Now that I've entered my 1st oly comp, I know all of this is true except... the people are nice, there's no music, and you should steal as much "Apricot-Strawberry" Red Bull as you can.

Prior to this, I'd go to the gym for general fitness but I'd never truly had a "goal," so in my first podcast this year, I mentioned my New Year's resolution of entering my first competition & in today's episode, you get a beginner's view of what Olympic weightlifting is like!

Time Stamps:
01:25 - My reasons for doing it
07:55 - The atmosphere/ how an oly comp actually works

I like to think I’m full of surprises & when you have a memory of a goldfish like me sometimes you surprise yourself. Today I unpack a memory, so deeply repressed, about my mini Musically (now “Tiktok”) fame where I discuss going to meets & greets, climbing global leaderboards and finally, the kicker, going live with a Dobre brother. All I can say about this story is I maybe be wild, but I am free.

FUN. Hangover. (bleh for 1-2 days). FUN. Hangover. (bleh for 1-2 days). "I hate this cycle but I can't just stop!" If this is you, this was me, until the higher powers gave me a "bleh" so bad I never wanted to feel like that again (least for a month). After 30+ days as sober as the day I was born my main running thought throughout Dry January has been "it should be illegal to feel this good". Luckily, this high is legal and you can do it too.

Time Stamps:
0:00 - What is Dry January?
3:24 - Sobriety in Scotland is hard: my struggles with saying "no" & self-belief
7:03 - The scientific reasoning behind 30 days
8:28 - Dopamine deficits: boredom is dangerous
10:26 - "Pain-Pleasure balance", why I'm addicted to Asian Bling & you're hooked on that douchebag
12:50 - How to find a strong enough incentive to stay sober
14:23 - Cut the club, cut the excuses
15:25 - Finding Anti Role models (people you'd rather die than be like)

Disclaimer: I’m not qualified to speak for people who have had a lifetime of addiction. I’m just a silly little student hoping to speak to other silly other students like myself who want less hangovers and more productive days.

We've all had those chats before where we think no one is listening but all of a sudden we start getting adverts for our very niche conversation everywhere.

In this data economy, your privacy is profitable. Personalised adverts are starting to feel like a personalised attack and in today's episode, I talk about our brain's natural filtering process, our "modern filtering processes" and the type of manipulation that can occur when our data goes into the wrong hands (cough cough Facebook). I discuss China being scary (usual from the usual) & ramble about how I'm annoyed CCTV surveillance prevents me from being a naughty zoo animal >:(((((

Time Stamps:
0:00 - Introduction: RAS (Reticular Activating System) & singing to woodlouse
5:44 - "What is Surveillance Capitalism? ". Cash is not king, Data is.
12:26 - How China used FaceID & CCTV surveillance to capture the Uyghur Muslims + Homage to George Orwells' "1984" Novel

"Ew, cringe". Something we have all thought/said once. Although often meant as a joke, this defence mechanism which protects us from embarrassment can also come at a price - our happiness.  Today I explore "cringe culture", why it came to be, and if I think the risk of "not always being cool" is worth the upside of "doing everything you wanted" (spoiler alert, I have a podcast and speak to a mushroom in my room - you can probably tell my bias :)).

Perfection is a myth. The more we ingrain a "no-cringe" mantra the quicker we allow ourselves to learn & grow.  This is hard without good backing, so today I discuss the things that help me feel confident & how to redefine what "cool" is to you.

Time stamps
1:22 - What exactly is "cringe culture"?
9:11 - How cringing can mean growth: relation to childhood & redefining your "cool"
15:12 - How to grow a pair and do the things you want (good friends & privileges.
