Jeff Venables has been teaching chemistry and forensic science at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, SC since 1995. He was the Rock Hill School District Teacher of the Year in 2013 and a finalist for SC Teacher of the Year. He is a past President of Palmetto State Teachers Association. Jeff completed a certificate in personal finance at North Carolina State University and has served as a financial coach to individuals and couples since 2020.

STAR stands for Strategies for Teacher Advancement and Renewal. The first STAR seminar was held in 1994 and since that time over 550 teachers from across South Carolina have been honored as STAR teachers. Teachers who have taught for at least 5 years in South Carolina public schools and have direct contact with students are eligible to apply. STAR attendees are selected through a vigorous application process.
