The On Ramp: Daily Bible Reading: Recent Episodes

Way Nation

Ever feel guilty for not reading the Bible as much as you think you should? A lot of times, the problem is just knowing where to start.

That’s why we created the On Ramp Daily Bible Reading podcast.

Each weekday we post a reading of one chapter of the Bible. In just 5 or 10 minutes, you can begin a daily Bible reading habit. And yes, listening counts just as much as reading. :)

In the first 260 episodes, we’ll read through the entire New Testament. But you don’t need to work backwards to catch up. Jump in today and see what God wants to tell you about himself right now.

Today we’re reading Hebrews 11 from the New Living Translation.

As you listen (or read) today, check out how much of this chapter is focused on the lives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob! Maybe you missed a few chapters in Genesis - feel free to go back and listen for examples of how they lived by faith. One example - Jacob's prayer in today's reading of Genesis 32.

Today we’re reading Genesis 32 from the New Living Translation.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)

READ: Here is something I noticed…

  • Jacob wrestled with God near the Jabbok River (vs 22).

The name “Jabbok” means “emptying” in Hebrew. It flows from a mountain range, and empties into the Jordan River about halfway between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. If you have a map in the back of your Bible, you might be able to see for yourself! As I think about the scene, I can’t help but think of the “emptying” that was happening in Jacob’s heart.

He schemed and manipulated the situation to get the blessing from his father Isaac (as if God needed his help to fulfill His promises). And now, on the eve of seeing his estranged brother Esau, Jacob is in some pretty deep distress. He prays. He reminds God of His promises, and he shares his concern - “I am afraid...” (vs11). Further, Jacob acknowledges “I am unworthy…”

That night Jacob wrestled with God, and God changed his name from “Jacob,” which means “Supplanter”… to “Israel,” which means “God Prevails.”

His name went from a declaration of his own sin and weakness to a declaration of God’s strength and power.

Today we’re reading Hebrews 10 from the New Living Translation.

So much of what we read in this chapter applies to our OT reading today in Genesis 31.

Here were some of my thoughts...

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)

READ: Here is something I noticed…

  • God will see it even if no one else does (vs 50).

This chapter tells the story of Jacob’s separation from his uncle Laban. As you read the story, you’ll see there were issues & hurt on both sides. As they part ways, they made a covenant together - a promise not pass that place for the purpose of harming one another, and for Jacob a promise that he would not mistreat Laban’s daughters. Jacob and his family set up a pile of rocks as a monument, and they called by a name that means “witness pile.” The truth they acknowledged was this: God was the witness (vs 50) and the judge between them (vs 53) - He would see the actions, even if no one else does.

APPLY:
Remember, and don’t forget that God sees everything. This can be incredibly encouraging - or incredibly convicting!

MEDITATE:
So much of today’s reading in Hebrews 10 applies here! Specifically, check out Hebrews 10:35-39. I hope it encourages you.

PRAY:
Let’s pray to be people who do the right thing… always!

Today we’re reading Genesis 22 from the New Living Translation.

Abraham and Isaac went up that mountain to worship the LORD through sacrifice.
Isaac sensed that something wasn’t right, but Abraham assured his son, “God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering….” And that is what he did. A ram took Isaac’s place.

Hebrews 11:19 gives us insight into this man of faith - “Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.”

This sacrifice was a foreshadow...

Yahweh Yireh - “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” Centuries later, all nations on earth would be blessed through another sacrifice on mount Calvary - the perfect Lamb of God, Jesus - that would be provided (in our place) take away the sin of the world.

"For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16

We’re starting a new book today and it’s one of my favorites! The writer is not identified, but many believe that it was written by the apostle Paul.

The book of Hebrews was written to a Jewish audience - and seeks to connect the dots between many Old Testament truths and the person of Jesus.

One of the themes is that “Jesus is greater,” and in Chapter 1 we see that:
Jesus is greater than the word of the prophets (vs 1-2).
Jesus is greater than our sin (vs 3).
Jesus is greater than the angels (vs 4).

This is an amazing book - full of warnings - and full of promises.

Today we’re reading John 21 from the New Living Translation.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)

READ: Here are some things that stood out to me.

  • Disciples were frustrated and not catching fish.
  • Jesus instructs where to cast the net - and they catch “153 large fish.”
  • Jesus makes them breakfast
  • Jesus has a conversation with Peter - “Do you love me?”
  • Jesus restores Peter and gives him a new job “feed my sheep.”

Back in John 13, Jesus gave a new commandment - the disciples were to love one another as he had loved them. He had just washed their feet in a humble act of service. Moments later Peter declared his love, “I’m ready to die for you!” You know how the evening ended… or, if you’re new to the story, you can read or listen to John 18.

Now in the aftermath of his denial, Peter is face to face with Jesus once again. And as Jesus restored Peter, he gave him one simple task - “feed my sheep.” In other words, “shepherd my people.” Peter became a pillar of the early church. And if you read in the book of Acts, you’ll see this same Peter, being filled with the Holy Spirit (just like Jesus promised), and then proclaiming the good news about Jesus BOLDLY like he never had before.

APPLY:
Peter’s story reminds me that Jesus extends the same forgiveness and restoration to anyone who will repent of their sin and come to him. It reminds me that our sin and failure is not the end. Because of the cross, all is forgiven. Because Jesus is risen, we can experience the gift of the Holy Spirit and his power in our lives.

MEDITATE:
1 John 1:9 - Look it up.

PRAY:
Did you mess up really big this week? Don’t stay distant from Jesus. Reach out to him in prayer. Confess it and return back to him.

Today we’re reading Genesis 21 from the New Living Translation.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)

READ: Here are some things that stood out to me.

  • The LORD kept his word (vs 1).
  • The promise was kept at just the time God said it would (vs 2).
  • Abraham circumcised Isaac in accordance with the terms of the covenant from chapter 17 (vs 4). Obedience in the details matters.
  • Abraham was 100 years old (vs 5). There would be no mistake who gets the glory for this!
  • This was a miracle that caused joyful laughter (vs 6-7).
  • The dynamics between Hagar and Sarah were not good (vs 8-10).
  • Abraham viewed Ishmael as his son (vs 11).
  • God made a special promise to Abraham about Ishmael (vs 12-13).
  • God saw Hagar and heard Ishmael crying (vs 15-20)
  • God was with Ishmael (vs 20).
In Genesis 12, God made a promise to Abraham at the age of 75 that he would give him land, that he would make him a great nation (children), and that all nations of the earth would be blessed through him. These promises were repeated at various times in Abraham’s life - see Genesis 15, 17, 18.

In this chapter, 25 years later - Abraham finally sees the fulfillment of the promise about children. It was a promise so crazy to believe that it caused joyful laughter!

But… there was a moment several years prior where Abraham and Sarah tried to help God fulfill the promise - this resulted in a whole lot of heartbreak for Hagar and Ishmael. God never forgot about either of them. He made a special promise to Abraham and Hagar about Ishmael also becoming a great nation - see Genesis 16, 17, 21.

APPLY:
A couple things strike me. Every promise in the Bible will prove true. Are you and I living like we believe that? One more thing - I’m moved by the detail that “God heard the boy crying.” Maybe you’re sad about something today. God cares about the details.

MEDITATE:
Take some time to read and think about Hebrews 11:11-16.

PRAY:
Jesus thank you for being true to your Word & thank you for keeping your promises!

Today we’re reading Genesis 20 from the New Living Translation.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)

READ: Here are some things that stood out to me...
“she is my sister…”
Sarah was in her 90’s. And King Abimelech of Gerar wanted her.
Abraham was hiding behind a half-truth.
Motivated by fear, he argued, “she really is my sister...” (vs 12).
Only he had left out the other part - that he had married her.

APPLY:
A half truth is always a lie. God knew that - and he loved Abraham and Sarah too much to let them get by with it.

Not only did God expose the lie - he also blew Abraham’s cover - telling Abimelech, “Now return the woman to her husband, and he will pray for you, FOR HE IS A PROPHET” (vs 7).

Abraham, despite being a prophet, was still a sinner.

And it’s important to note that Abraham’s lie didn’t absolve Abimelech of responsibility for his actions. He was still wrong.

In the end, Abraham prayed for Abimelech and God brought healing to that community. Whew. Close call. Abraham and Sarah are on the verge of finally seeing God’s promise to them fulfilled in the birth of Isaac & we’ll read about that in the next chapter.

But for now, when God exposes something in our lives, that’s his discipline - and he does it because he loves us.

MEDITATE:
Psalm 94:12 “Joyful are those you discipline, LORD, those you teach with your instructions.”

PRAY:
Jesus, teach us to love the truth.

Today we’re reading John 20 from the New Living Translation.

I’m reflecting on verse 31.
“But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.“

The word, “believe” in English is the Greek word “πιστεύω” (pisteuō). It means: “to think to be true, to be persuaded of, to credit, place confidence in.”

The stories of all the miraculous things that Jesus did - including his resurrection - were recorded so that you and I would “continue” to be persuaded of the truth of who Jesus is - and place our full confidence in Him as Savior.

Why "continue to believe?" The writer of Hebrews said it like this: "So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it" (Hebrews 2:1).

Drifting is a real thing - and I'm praying for you and I today that if there has been some drifting going on in our hearts, that we'll come back quickly to Jesus.

I'm gonna be real - this was a tough chapter to read.

Today, we’re reading Genesis 19 from the New Living Translation.

If you compare Abraham and Lot, you’ll see that Abraham lived apart from the culture - in a tent. Lot lived with the culture - sitting at the city entrance - and calling the men of the city his “brothers.” He was even willing to sacrifice his daughters to appease them. It appears that Sodom had a strong influence on their family. Lot was hesitant to leave, his wife looked back, and his daughters seem to have picked up a rather warped worldview.

Ezekiel 16:49 says this - “Sodom’s sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness…”

It is a terrible story of prideful men with no accountability, doing whatever they wanted with whomever they wanted.

The people we choose as our influencers matter. The people our kids choose as their influencers matter.

That said, here’s an interesting connection:

The child that Lot had with his oldest daughter was named Moab. While the Moabites became Israel’s enemies, there was one Moabite woman many years later named Ruth.

Ruth (who had been widowed) followed her mother-in-law back to the land of Judah, saying “your people will be my people, and your God will by my God.” She met a man named Boaz, whom she married. Boaz & Ruth had a child named Obed. Obed had a child named Jesse. And Jesse became the father of King David. Eventually from this family with a Moabite mother, the Messiah would come - Jesus.

Today, we’re reading John 19 from the New Living Translation.

This chapter is sacred ground. Jesus was falsely condemned to death. Twice in these verses, Pilate pronounced him “not guilty” (vs 4, 6). Pilate was afraid of what was happening (vs 8), and he tried to release Jesus (vs 12).

Yet the people demanded that he be crucified because he called himself the Son of God (vs 7).

And so - Jesus was whipped, made to wear a crown of thorns, and nailed to a cross.
Isaiah 53 was written around 700 years before the time of Jesus, yet it describes in great detail many of the things he experienced during the crucifixion. Isaiah 53 also pre-dates crucifixion by several hundred years.

Here is what Isaiah 53:10-11 says:
“But it was the LORD’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the LORD’s good plan will prosper in his hands. When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous.”

Another interesting connection - following the crucifixion, we see two men come to take the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea was a secret disciple because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders (see John 9:22 & 12:42-43). The other was Nicodemus who came to Jesus by night (John 3).

Both of these guys became followers of Jesus - and eventually came to the cross to show their love.

Today, we’re reading Genesis 18 from the New Living Translation.

In verse 19, God said this about Abraham: “I have singled him out so that he will direct his sons and their families to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just.”

The LORD separated Abraham out from all the others “so that”…

Abraham was set apart for a purpose - and that purpose was to lead his sons and their families to keep the way of the LORD.

Today, we’re reading John 18 from the New Living Translation.

I’m thinking about verse 37…. One of the greatest ways we can show love to others is by telling the truth.

Jesus came to share an awful truth —> you and I have sinned.

But Jesus also shared a wonderful truth —> you and I can be forgiven.

Sugar-coating a terrible reality is not love. Jesus did no such thing. He told people the truth because he loved them.

Despite believing that Jesus was innocent, Pilate asked “what is truth?” He then proceeded to lean into the popular opinion of people he wanted to keep happy.

We each have to decide for ourselves what we are going to do with the truth that Jesus shared.

Today we’re reading John 17 from the New Living Translation.

Before Jesus was betrayed in the garden of Gethsemane, here are some of the things he prayed for:
He prayed for his disciples.
He prayed for their protection by the power of his name.
He prayed that by the power of his name, they would be unified.
He prayed that they would be holy through obedience to his Word.
He prayed for all believers everywhere who would believe their testimony - that they would be one together - united by the truth they’ve received.
He prayed that their unity would give proof to the world that Jesus is the Messiah.

Today we’re reading Genesis 17 from the New Living Translation.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)

READ: Here are some things that stood out to me.

  • Abram was 99 years old when God appeared to him (vs 1).
  • God identifies Himself by a new name - El Shaddai, which means “God Almighty” (vs1).
  • God gives Abram a new name - Abraham - and again confirms His promise to make him the father of many nations (vs 4).
  • God gives Abraham the mark of circumcision. God’s portion of the covenant was to give Abraham descendants and land (and eventually a Savior). Abraham’s portion of the covenant was to keep the covenant of circumcision (vs 9-14).
  • God gives Sarai a new name - Sarah (vs 15).
  • Abraham laughs to himself about the promise of he and Sarah having children when they were old (vs 17).
  • God gives a name to their coming child - Isaac, which means “laughter” (vs 19).
  • Abraham obeys quickly regarding circumcision (vs 23-27).

APPLY:
God can still speak to your heart whether you’re 9, or 99! He is “God Almighty” - and able to do things you can’t do. In fact, God had been preparing Abraham for a special task that he wouldn’t begin until he was 100 years old - becoming the father of Isaac.

Perhaps what is most interesting to me in this chapter is that God gives Abraham terms to obey in this covenant - circumcision. This was a peculiar sign that would set Abraham’s descendants apart from all others in the world.

Abraham practiced immediate obedience to “that very day.” Jesus said it in the gospel of John (chapter 14) - “If you love me, obey my teachings…”

I wonder if this is why God chose Abraham from among all others. He had a heart of faith to follow the Almighty God - and courage to do whatever He asked.

MEDITATE:
Romans 4:11-13 - “Circumcision was a sign that Abraham already had faith and that God had already accepted him and declared him to be righteous - even before he was circumcised. So Abraham is the spiritual father of those who have faith but have not been circumcised. They are counted as righteous because of their faith. And Abraham is also the spiritual father of those who have been circumcised, but only if they have the same kind of faith Abraham had before he was circumcised. Clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based not on his obedience to God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith.”

PRAY:
Jesus, give me the faith to obey quickly.

The context: The night Jesus was betrayed, he was walking with his disciples to the garden of Gethsemane at the Mount of Olives. Within 24 hours, he would be led to the cross.

READ - here are some things that stood out to me:

  • Jesus again warns his disciples that persecution is coming (vs 1-4)
    • He warned them so they wouldn’t abandon their faith - persecution can be discouraging. Jesus wanted them to expect this and not give up.
    • For some, the persecution would mean being expelled from the synagogue. This would mean a loss of community, fellowship, friends, and family.
    • For some, the persecution would mean death from those who claim to follow God.
    • But, those who persecute Christians do not truly know God.
  • Jesus tells the disciples that it was “best” for them if he goes away - because his going away was necessary for the Advocate (Holy Spirit) to come (vs 5-7).
  • Jesus talked about three things the Holy Spirit would do when He comes: Convict the world of sin, righteousness, and coming judgment (vs 8).
    • “Convicting of sin” means that the Holy Spirit will convict people for their refusal to believe that Jesus is the Savior (vs 9).
    • “Convicting of righteousness” means that the Holy Spirit will remind people that righteousness cannot be attained from ourselves - rather it is only gained through the finished work of Jesus on the cross & his resurrection from the dead (vs 10).
    • “Convicting of coming judgment” means that the Holy Spirit would convict the world that there are consequences for sin and rebellion against God - because Satan has already been judged (vs 11).

APPLY:
  • Take Jesus and all the consequences! Following Him may come at a cost - and that is to be expected.
  • The departure of Jesus from this earth (death/resurrection/ascension) resulted in the coming of the Holy Spirit (our Helper/Advocate/One who comes alongside).
  • This is some of what the Holy Spirit does in my life:
    • Conviction of sin. When I feel guilty over something I did (or failed to do), this is the work of the Spirit. When I push away that guilty feeling, I may be saying “no” to Him.
    • Reminder of the righteousness of Jesus. When I realize my sin, and my need for the righteousness that only comes from Jesus, this is the work of the Spirit.
    • Reminder of coming judgment. When I realize that Jesus is coming again to deal with the problem of sin and injustice in the world, this is the work of the Spirit. Knowledge of this judgment also becomes a powerful motivation for me to share the gospel with others.

MEDITATE:
John 16:33 - “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

PRAY:
Jesus, thank you for the warning, and thank you for the promises about your Spirit. Teach me how to live for you - and teach me to love your truth!

It was a bad idea.

When Sarai was unable to have a child, she came up with the idea to give her husband another woman - well… because maybe she could have a child with him. 🤷‍♂️ God’s design for marriage from the beginning was 1 man & 1 woman. It was intended to be an exclusive relationship.

What makes things a little more complicated is that Sarai (in a round-about way) pins her reasoning on God. “The LORD has prevented me from having children. Go and sleep with my servant.”

Sometimes we make poor decisions and blame God.

Read the chapter and you’ll see the chaos and heartbreak that ensues.

What about Hagar? Well, she was kind of caught in the middle, right? She was a servant - and probably didn’t have a lot of say in the matter. Yet we read that “she began to treat her mistress, Sarai, with contempt.”

I’ll say it again - this was a bad idea.

But here’s something to consider: When Sarai retaliated and treated Hagar so harshly that she ran away, the angel of the LORD appeared to her and made a special promise. From that day on, Hagar referred to the LORD as “the God who sees me.”

If you or your family has experienced brokenness because of your own sin, or because of the sin of someone else - be encouraged that the same God who saw Hagar in the wilderness also sees YOU. He is extending grace, mercy, forgiveness, and a fresh start through Jesus Christ.

I see a beautiful connection in today’s readings - between Genesis 15 and John 15.

Jesus said:
“I no longer call you slaves because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. You didn’t choose me, I chose you...” - John 15:15-16a

The night He was betrayed, Jesus shared some amazing promises with His friends. He confided in them. He told them about His coming death, and the home He would make for them in Heaven. He told them about the promise of the Holy Spirit, and He promised them that persecution would come because they followed Him.

These disciples of Jesus walked closely with Jesus during His ministry on earth - but only because He chose them first.

Similarly in Genesis 15, the LORD Himself spoke with Abram in a vision and shared some amazing promises with him too! He confided in Abram. The God of Heaven shared that Abram would have his own son, and that he would eventually possess the entire land surrounding him. He also promised Abram that persecution would come on his descendants.

Abram walked closely with God as he traveled on earth, lived in tents, and built altars - but only because God chose him first and called him from Ur of the Chaldeans.

Here are a couple takeaways:

  • When God calls, we must follow.
  • Abiding in Him leads to much fruit - this was true for both Abram and Jesus' disciples.
  • If we live for Jesus, persecution is to be expected.

In the previous chapter, Lot had moved his tents to a place near Sodom. Genesis 13:13 shares the truth of Sodom at that time - they were extremely wicked and were constantly sinning against God. Time has passed, and now Lot is living IN Sodom. Based on what the Bible says to be true about Sodom, and knowing how Lot’s story ends later in this book - he should have stayed far, far away from this city. As war broke out, Sodom was captured by a rival king and Lot was taken captive. Abram had a deep commitment to his nephew, Lot. He staged a daring rescue and was able to bring him back, along with the other captives.

After victory, Abram is met by the King of Sodom and a mysterious figure named Melchizedek. Melchizedek - The King of Salem, and priest of God - came to bless Abram. Abram gave him a tithe of what was recovered. Melchizedek appears later in the Bible - in Psalm 110, and in Hebrews 5, 6, & 7.

This is what Hebrews 7:3 says about him - “There is no record of his father or mother or any of his ancestors - no beginning or end to his life. He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God.”

Abram was called by God to travel by faith to a new land. God made amazing promises to him. Abram practiced habitual sacrifice and worship to God. Then he was visited & blessed by a king and priest who resembled the Son of God - JESUS.

Hebrews 7 continues in verses 24-25 “But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.”

This is what I READ:
The context: This is the night Jesus was betrayed. He is celebrating Passover with the disciples. Within the next 24 hours, Jesus will go to the cross. Jesus has just told his disciples that He is going away. During His public ministry, Jesus has talked openly about being killed, and rising again. As chapter 14 opens, Jesus has just prophesied about Peter’s denial (John 13:31-38).

And then He said “do not let your hearts be troubled.”

The news Jesus just dropped was indeed troubling - but then He began to reveal the first of several promises in this chapter. He was going to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house (Heaven) - and He would return to get them!

As the chapter progresses, Jesus shared another very important promise. If they truly loved Him, their love - evidenced in obedience - would lead to a special gift - “another Advocate.” He explains that this “Advocate” is the Holy Spirit.

In the Greek writings, the word that is translated “Advocate” is “παράκλητος (paraklētos).” It means “a helper” or “one who comes alongside to give aid.” Jesus will explain more about the Holy Spirit in the next few chapters - but here are a few things He shares:

  • The Holy Spirit leads in truth (vs 17).
  • He lives with you now and later will be in you (vs 17).
  • The Holy Spirit will teach you (vs 26).
  • The Holy Spirit will remind you of Jesus’s words (vs 26).

APPLY:
As Christians, the Holy Spirit is our helper. He is the one who comes alongside to give aid. According to Jesus, the way we receive that gift is love for Him, as evidenced by obedience. Of course, we all want the help and strength that comes from Him, but are we willing to first DO what He has instructed?

MEDITATE:
“If you love me, obey my commandments” - John 14:15

PRAY:
“Holy Spirit, teach me to obey.”

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEMORIZE-PRAY)
This is what I READ:

  • Abram was traveling from Egypt with his wife, and Lot (vs 1).
  • Abram stopped between Bethel and Ai where he had made an altar and worshiped the LORD previously. Cross ref: Genesis 12:8-9.
  • In that place, Abram worshiped the LORD again (vs 4).
  • There was conflict between Abram and Lot’s herdsmen (vs 5-7).
  • To resolve the conflict, they made a decision to separate - Abram gave Lot the first choice of land (vs 8-9)
  • Lot chose the whole Jordan valley and moved toward Sodom, while Abram took the land of Canaan (vs 10-13).
  • God reiterated His promise to Abram - land and descendants - and he built another altar to the LORD (vs 14-18).

The context of this chapter is Abram leaving Egypt after a famine, and after being busted by Pharaoh for lying. Some of the hallmarks of Abram’s life were traveling, building altars, and worshiping the LORD. Interestingly we don’t see any record of altars or worship happening in Egypt. Between Bethel and Ai, Abram worshiped the LORD again - perhaps this was the same altar he had built before.

\When Abram realized that conflict between he and Lot was an issue, he offered Lot the first choice of land. Lot chose the land to the east - it was a beautiful land! He moved his family near Sodom, a decision would prove to be disastrous for Lot and his family. Sodom was known for its great wickedness. After Lot had left, God spoke to Abram and reiterated His promises! Abram built another altar to the LORD.

Look closely at what land God gives to Abram: “in every direction - north, south EAST, and west.” In the end, all the land would belong to Abram anyway!

APPLY:
Abram’s worship involved an altar. The presence of an altar would indicate that there was also a sacrifice. Worship is so much more than singing songs. One of the ways that we can worship God is through sacrifice & giving. Worship and sacrifice just seem to be the norm of his life.

Lot on the other hand seemed to care about different things - when he had the choice of where to live, he picked one of the most vile places imaginable. We’ll see in Genesis 18-19 just how awful this place was, and the far-reaching legacy of Lot’s choices.

The story of Abram and Lot is really a contrast between two different hearts. Which heart will I have? A heart of sacrifice and worship to God, or a heart that is moving myself and my family closer to sin?

MEDITATE:
The verse sheds a little light on Abram’s heart: “Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God.” - Hebrews 11:10

PRAY:
I’m praying for you today and the decisions you’re facing. I’m praying you’ll choose the eternal like Abram did!

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEMORIZE-PRAY)

This is what I READ:

The context is the Passover celebration. Jesus is having one final meal with His disciples before He is betrayed.

  • Jesus knew that His hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father (vs 1)
  • Jesus knew that He had authority over everything (vs 3)
  • Jesus knew Judas would betray Him (vs 3, 26-27).
  • Jesus knew Peter would deny Him (vs 38).
  • Jesus loved His disciples to the end (vs 1).
  • Jesus washed the feet of His disciples to teach them about servanthood (vs 4-17).
  • Jesus gives a new commandment to love others like He loved them (vs 34-35).

The crucifixion was not a surprise. Jesus knew what was coming. He knew that he was going to be betrayed, denied, and crucified. He knew that He was returning to the Father in Heaven, and that He had authority over everything (ie - God had given all things into His hands). Just let those truths sink in. He was going to be betrayed, denied, and crucified, and He had the power to stop it. But he didn’t. Jesus went to the cross because of the JOY set before Him (Hebrews 12:2). What was that JOY? It was the redemptive work of saving the people He loved.

On that night Jesus didn’t just say that He loved His disciples - He showed them the full extent of His love in the washing of their feet. Not more than 24 later, Jesus would show it to them in an even greater way on the cross.

APPLY:
Jesus gave a new commandment that night to love each other like He loved them. The same heart of sacrifice - the same willingness to lay aside our rights. I am challenged by that because I know so often the thing that I call “love” looks very different than what Jesus modeled. I still see in my own heart a desire to “get,” not sacrifice, and I’m praying that God continues to show me where I fall short, so that my love can look more and more like His.

MEDITATE:
Philippians 2:5-7 - “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”

PRAY:
Jesus, please teach me to love and sacrifice for others just like You.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEMORIZE-PRAY)

This is what I READ:

  • Many people were leaving the religious leaders and believing in Jesus. As a result the religious leaders wanted to kill both Jesus and Lazarus (10-11).
  • Still most people still did not believe, despite the miraculous signs that Jesus did. This fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy (vs 37-40).
  • Some Jewish leaders believed, but wouldn’t admit it because they were afraid. They loved human praise more than the praise of God (vs 42-43).

The New Testament wasn’t written in English. It was written in a form of Koine Greek. The reason we have many different translations of the Bible (including the New Living Translation) is that sometimes words and thoughts don’t always translate clearly into English. I’m grateful for those who have dedicated their lives to translate God’s Word!

In John 12, we see 8 uses of a specific Greek word “πιστεύω” (pisteuō). In English, it is translated “believe” or “trust.” I included a few mentions in the bullet points above. This word means: “to think to be true, to be persuaded of, to credit, place confidence in.”

We see belief at work in three different ways in this chapter:
  1. Some people chose to “believe in” or “trust” Jesus. They saw His miracles and they decided that He was true. They were persuaded that He was sent from God. They placed their confidence in Him as their Savior.
  2. Others did not believe. They saw the miracles and they made the decision that He was not true. They did not believe He was sent from God. They did not put their confidence in Him.
  3. Perhaps most interesting is the third group. There were some Jewish leaders who did believe, but they wouldn’t admit it because they were afraid of what they might lose if the word got out. The Bible provides the commentary that they loved their popularity more than they loved praise from God.

APPLY:
Publicly praising Jesus is something that God praises! The Jewish leaders wouldn’t do it because they were fearful. Are there times I’m afraid of aligning myself with Him?

MEDITATE:
Romans 1:16 - “For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes [πιστεύω (pisteuō)] - the Jew first and also the Gentile.

PRAY:
I’m praying for you to have boldness today - and that God will give you opportunities to tell others how awesome He is!

This is what I READ:

  • The LORD made promises to Abram (vs 1-3):
    • I will show you [the land]
    • I will make you into a great nation
    • I will bless you and make you famous
    • You will be a blessing to others
    • I will bless those who bless you
    • All families on earth will be blessed through you
  • Abram left as the LORD instructed and traveled to Canaan (vs 4-5).
  • When a famine struck the land, Abram went to Egypt (vs 10).
  • Abram lied and encouraged his wife to lie too (vs 11-13).
  • Pharaoh gave Abram many possessions including “female servants” (vs 16).
  • The lie was discovered and Abram was sent on his way (vs 19-20).

God made some pretty great promises to Abram. Land - descendants - fame - blessing - and a gift that would bless “all families on earth” (of course we know this is Jesus!). As he journeyed to Canaan, he was following the LORD’s instructions. Until… a famine came. Whether or not he was supposed to go down to Egypt, I’m not sure. But this is what I know - Abram wasn’t in a great place. He lied and encouraged his wife to lie too. In his lie, he received many possessions from Pharaoh, including “female servants.” Why would I highlight that one? If you flip ahead to Genesis 16, Abram has a child with an Egyptian servant named Hagar. If you don’t know the story, feel free to read ahead see how that goes… 🤦🏼‍♂️

APPLY:
The Bible is brutally honest about the sin of its heroes. In their fear and impatience, they made some pretty dumb choices. And so have I. They are never commended for their sin. Rather, they are only commended for their faith. Nothing good ever comes from lying. Nothing.

MEDITATE:
Ephesians 4:24-25 - “Put on your new nature, created to be like God - truly righteous and holy. So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.”

PRAY:
Jesus please lead us to be people who love the truth - and tell the truth.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEMORIZE-PRAY)

This is what I READ:

  • Jesus said Lazarus was sick so that God would be glorified (vs 4).
  • Jesus was “glad” that Lazarus died, because His work/miracle would lead to their belief in Him (as the Messiah) (vs 14).
  • Jesus - “I am the resurrection and the life.” Anyone who believes in Him will live, even after dying (vs 25).
  • When Jesus saw the mourning, He was angry (vs 33).
  • Jesus was still angry when He arrived at the tomb (vs 38).
  • Jesus - “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” (vs 40).
  • Jesus prays to the Father and does the miracle “SO THAT” they would believe He was sent by God (vs 42).

The miracles of Jesus served a purpose. Many times He was demonstrating by miracles that He was the Messiah, so that people would believe in Him. Four times in this chapter, Jesus communicates the necessity of believing:
  1. “I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe.”
  2. “Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.”
  3. “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believed?”
  4. “I said it out loud… so that they will believe You sent me.”

Believing in Jesus does not merely mean believing that He existed. Rather it means believing His claims by faith:
  • that Jesus is God (and that He performed miracles to prove it)
  • that He lived a perfect (sinless) life
  • that He died on a cross to pay the penalty for our sins
  • that He rose from the dead
  • that He is offering us the gift of forgiveness and hope of a resurrection to eternal life

In the story of Lazarus, Jesus was angry with the mourning. He was angry when He saw the tomb. Why? I think it was because He saw unbelief. After all He had done - after all the miracles - after such amazing displays of His power - the people were still slow to believe that He could do anything, even raise the dead.

APPLY:
I wonder if I sometimes have the same unbelieving heart. I know what scripture teaches about Jesus. I’ve seen Him work so many times in my life - and still I freak out when hard things come, or I choose things that are far less than Jesus.

MEDITATE:
Hebrews 3:12-13 - “Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still called “today,” so that non of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.”

PRAY:
Jesus keep my heart tender toward you - help me believe everything You said, and live like it’s true.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEMORIZE-PRAY)

This is what I READ in the story of the Tower of Babel:

  • The context of the Tower of Babel is that it’s in a city that Nimrod built.
  • They wanted to build a great city with a tower that reaches into the sky (vs 4).
  • This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world (vs 4).
  • The LORD saw their unity and it concerned him (vs 6).
  • And so He confused them with different languages (vs 7).

Babylon was a real place - known for its wonders and beauty - and also known for its great wickedness and sin. For more, see the notes on Genesis 10.

Most likely the “tower” was actually a ziggurat - or a step-style structure that somewhat resembled a pyramid. These types of buildings were used for worship in ancient Babylonia - only these people didn’t worship the true God, Yahweh - they worshipped false gods. Archaeological discoveries have revealed that the cities of Babylonia were built around these places of worship.

APPLY:
Unity in a family, church, or our country can be a beautiful thing, but this chapter shows us that not all unity is celebrated by God. The unity we see in this chapter seems to be fueled by human pride and pagan worship. There is a kind of unity to be pursued, and a kind of unity to be avoided. How awesome that as Christians, we can find unity around the gospel!

MEDITATE:
The kind of unity that Jesus prayed for was based on the truth of who He is - John 17:20-21, “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one - as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.”

Yes, Jesus - please make your people one in YOU so that the world will know!

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEMORIZE-PRAY)

Here is what I READ:

Genesis 10 is sometimes also called the “Table of Nations.” It details the generations of Noah and his sons, following the great flood. As you read, you’re likely to see some names you recognize from other places in the Bible.

A couple people and places that stand out to me - Magog, Tubal, and Meshech. These descendants of Japheth represent nations & geographical areas that are significant in bible prophecy. See Ezekiel 38-39, and Revelation 20. Those are both fascinating reads.

Another name of significance is Nimrod. He is identified as a great hunter & heroic warrior. While both of those identifiers sound awesome - let’s dig a little deeper. If you pull out some Bible study resources, you’ll see that his name can mean “valiant” or even “rebellion.” Look closely at his legacy - he built his kingdom in Babylonia (also called Shinar, Sumer, or the land of the Chaldeans). In the next few chapters of Genesis, God will call a man named Abram to leave this land. The cities Nimrod built were known for their wickedness - such as Nineveh from the book of Jonah.

But one city in particular that was built by Nimrod was the city of Babylon. Without a doubt it was a significant city in Old Testament history.

Babylon was a real place - known for its wonders and beauty - and also known for its great wickedness and sin. The city is also significant in prophecy. In the book of Revelation it not only seems to represent a real place, but is also credited as the consummate worldview and religious system that is in opposition to Jesus. Babylon is called the “mother of all ... obscenities in the world” and is the one who was “drunk with the blood of God’s holy people who were witnesses for Jesus.”

Babylon’s destruction will ultimately come - and you can read more about it in Revelation 17-18.

APPLY:
People and places matter to God.

Acts 17:26-27 says “From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him - though he is not far from any one of us.”

Look at the amazing history in Genesis 10. These people and places were… and ARE significant. This leads me to think about YOU.

The time and place where you have been born is significant too. God’s purpose for your life is that you might SEEK after Him and FIND Him. Though He might feel far away, He is very close to you.

MEMORIZE:
This week, I’m working on John 9:31 “We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.”

PRAY:
I’m praying that in light of what we’ve read about today that you’ll seek Jesus, find Him, worship Him, and do His will.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEMORIZE-PRAY)

Here is what I READ:

  • He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out (vs 3).
  • He walks ahead of them and they follow Him (vs 4).
  • His purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying (abundant) life (vs 10).
  • He knows His sheep (vs 14, 27).
  • He gives them eternal life and they will never perish (vs 28).

This passage reminds me of Psalm 23 - “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.”

Check out the things that the Good Shepherd - Jesus - does for His sheep (those who believe on Him for salvation).
  • He calls them by name
  • He leads them
  • He walks ahead of them
  • He gives them an abundant life
  • He knows them
  • He gives them eternal life

Noteworthy in this passage is the often quoted verse John 10:10 - “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying [abundant] life.”

Jesus tells us who the thieves are - “all who came before Him” (vs 8). This teaching from Jesus flows from the end of John 9 when Jesus was talking with some Pharisees present. The religious leaders of Israel had mis-represented God and His law. As we see many times through the gospels, Jesus wasn’t afraid to confront their hypocrisy.

APPLY:
Jesus stands in stark contrast to all others. What stands out to me in particular is that as Christians, we are KNOWN. “I know my sheep…” Sometimes you might feel unknown - but you are not forgotten by Jesus. He has shown you the full extent of His love in the cross, and I’m praying that if you’ve never given your heart to Him that you’ll reach out to Him in prayer today.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEMORIZE-PRAY)

Here is what I READ:

  • God gives mankind power over the animals (vs 2).
  • God establishes respect for human life & consequences for those who take life (vs 5-7).
  • God makes a promise to mankind not to destroy the earth with a flood, and gives the rainbow as a sign of that promise (vs 8-17).
  • Noah planted a vineyard and got drunk. Two sons respected their father, one son did not (vs 18-28).

God made rainbows as a sign of His promise not to destroy the earth with a flood. This is called an “eternal covenant” in verse 15. God has literally just cleansed the earth of sin and wickedness, and Noah and his family are now establishing a new way of life in the post-flood world.

But the person who had practiced habitual obedience to God had a weak moment. He allowed alcohol to take control and he became drunk. The chapter ends with a curse pronounced on Canaan, the son of Ham. Later, during the time of Moses and Joshua, the Canaanites would occupy the Promised Land. These people full of wickedness and idolatry would need to be conquered by the children of Israel following the exodus from Egypt.

APPLY:
Scripture admonishes us to beware of any intoxicating influences in our lives. While drugs & alcohol can be obvious culprits, there may be influences that are less obvious - like pride, lust, or coveting.

2 Timothy 2:22 says “Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.

MEMORIZE:
I’m going to write this verse from today's NT reading on my white board at work!

John 9:31 “We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.”

PRAY:
I’m praying for you and myself today that we’ll RUN from anything that is trying to pull us away from Jesus. I’m praying that you’ll find close friendship with others who love God’s Word and are seeking to do His will!

Here is what I READ:

  • Jesus saw a man who was blind from birth (vs 1).
  • The disciples assumed the blindness was because of sin (vs 2).
  • Jesus said it was so that the power of God could be seen (vs 3).
  • Spit + mud + go wash = a miracle! The man could see (vs 6-7).
  • Those who knew the man barely recognized him (vs 8-9).
  • He gave testimony about what Jesus did for him (vs 10-12).
  • Pharisees say: “Jesus is not…” | Others say: “He is…” (vs 16).
  • Formerly blind man questioned. Parents questioned, but they fear the Jewish leaders because anyone who said Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from the synagogue (vs 17-24).
  • The man stands up for Jesus again and is thrown out of the synagogue (vs 25-34).
  • Jesus found the man and revealed Himself as the Messiah (vs 35-39).

Why was this man born blind? Jesus was clear that his blindness was so the power of God could be seen in him.

The miracles of Jesus are definitely interesting. Seldom in the gospels does He perform the same miracle in the same way. In this instance, He spit on the ground, made some mud, and put it on the man’s eyes. Jesus sent him to go wash in the pool of Siloam. The blind man obeyed - and he experienced miraculous healing.

This is where we begin to see the power of God in this man’s life. He was healed, yes - but I think it goes even deeper. The reason Jesus performed miracles wasn’t merely to make people’s lives better - it was so that people would believe His message.

Upon being healed, this (formerly) blind man now had a message of his own and he immediately began sharing it with his neighbors - who brought him to the Pharisees - who eventually threw him out of the synagogue, but not before many had seen and heard this powerful testimony about Jesus!

As best as I understand it, to be thrown out of the synagogue was to be cut off from the spiritual and social life in Israel. Where would he worship? Where would he sacrifice? Where would he find fellowship and community?

Romans 1:16 - “For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes - the Jew first and also the Gentile.”

The blind man was not ashamed. He took a bold stand for Jesus and met the long awaited Savior!

APPLY:
Standing for Jesus might get you in trouble. It might get you thrown out of a school, workplace, or maybe a close relationship. We can talk in generalities about “God” all day long, but the name of Jesus divides, like we see in this passage.

If you have experienced some level of persecution because of your faith in Jesus, here are 3 verses that I hope encourage you:
  • 2 Timothy 3:12 “Yes and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
  • Matthew 5:10 “God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right…”
  • 1 Peter 4:19 “So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.”

MEMORIZE:
I’m going to write this verse from today on my white board at work!

John 9:31 “We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.”

PRAY:
I’m praying for you today if you’re someone who is experiencing persecution because of your faith in Jesus. I’m praying that you’ll find close fellowship with Jesus, and great community in a local church!

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)

Here is what I READ:

  • Jesus was in the temple early in the morning teaching a crowd that had gathered (vs 2).
  • The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in the act of adultery and pronounced their judgment on her (citing the law of Moses) right in front of Jesus and the crowd (vs 3-5).
  • They asked Jesus “what do you say?” (vs 5).
  • Scripture reveals that their intention was to trap Jesus, not render justice (vs 6).
  • Jesus challenges the religious leaders & Pharisees to consider their own sins (vs 7).
  • When the accusers leave, Jesus assures the woman - that He wouldn’t condemn her. He tells her to “go and sin no more” (vs 11).

What did Jesus say to the woman caught in adultery?

“Neither do I [condemn you]. Go and sin no more.”

I’m sure they interrupted a great Bible study. Jesus was teaching a crowd of early risers in the temple when the religious leaders brought a woman caught in the act of adultery. They pronounce their judgment - “the law of Moses says to stone her.”

But wait. Let’s look at what the Law of Moses actually says…

Deuteronomy 22:22 - “If a man is discovered committing adultery, both he and the woman must die. In this way, you will purge Israel of such evil.”

“Both… must die?” So… where’s the dude? If she was caught in the act, there must be another person, right?

Scripture tells us that these religious leaders didn’t care about justice. They were looking for a way to trap Jesus into saying something they could use against Him - and Jesus (who knows everything) knew their sinful hearts.

APPLY:
Jesus sees through the hypocrisy of those who want to mis-use God’s Word. He also sees the heart of those who are truly broken over their sin. Who am I going to be?

MEDITATE:
Psalm 51:17 - “The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”

PRAY:
Jesus, thank you for your complete forgiveness! Please teach me to run away from the things that break your heart.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)

Here is what I READ:

  • Amid the destruction, God remembered Noah and the animals (vs 8).
  • Noah used a raven and a dove to see if the flood waters had dried up (vs 6-12), but…
  • Noah didn’t leave the boat until God told him to leave (vs 15-17).
  • Most of the animals had the job to “be fruitful and multiply” (vs 17), but others had been set apart to be a sacrifice (vs 20).
  • Noah built an altar and sacrificed the animals that had been approved for that purpose (vs 20).
  • The LORD was pleased with the aroma of the sacrifice (vs 21).

God had a plan for Noah and the animals that went beyond reproduction. In the pre-flood earth, things went wrong because people turned their hearts away from the true & living God. They stopped worshipping their Creator, and had started worshipping other things.

As we’ve read, Noah lived in a way that was different from the culture. He walked in close fellowship with God (Gen 6:9). He did everything exactly as God commanded him (Gen 6:22). And following the flood, he sacrificed some of the animals as burnt offerings in worship (Gen 8:20).

I believe that part of Noah’s responsibility after the flood was to reinstate and model the proper worship of Yahweh. And so, I see three important aspects of worship in Noah’s life: close fellowship with God, obedience to His Word, and sacrifice.

APPLY:
  • We can worship God when we spend time with Him. This can look like talking to Him in prayer, or spending time in His Word.
  • We can worship Him through obedience. Jesus said it in John 14:15 “If you love me, obey….”
  • We can worship Him through sacrifice and giving Him the best of our time, talents or resources. Worship has little to do with a song - it has everything to do with the response of our hearts toward Him!

MEDITATE:
John 4:23-24: “But the time is coming - indeed it’s here now - when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

PRAY:
Jesus, teach me what worship really means. Teach me to live a life of obedience and sacrifice in close fellowship with You.

When Jesus met the woman at the well a few chapters ago, He said, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water (John 4:10)”

In today’s reading, Jesus says all who are thirsty can come and drink and experience rivers of living water flowing from their heart! John the Apostle (the writer of the Gospel of John) tells us that Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit who would later be given to all who believe (see Acts 2). But at this point the Spirit had not been given because Jesus had not yet ascended to Heaven.

Notice how the crowds respond to Jesus in the verses that follow.

He will have a lot more to teach us about the Holy Spirit as we continue in John (specifically chapters 14-16)!

Today we’re reading John 7 from the New Living Translation.

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)

Here is what I READ:

  • From the last verse of chapter 6, into chapter 7, Noah did everything as the LORD commanded him (vs 5).
  • God saw that Noah alone was righteous (vs 1).
  • There were more than just two of some animals - specifically 7 pairs of those approved for eating and sacrifice, and 7 pairs of every kind of bird (vs 2-3).
  • God was specific in sharing His plans. He told Noah exactly when the rain would start, and how many days it would rain (vs 4a). He was also clear about the purpose of the flood (vs 4b)
  • The LORD was the one who closed the door to the boat (vs 16).
  • God wiped out everything. The only ones who survived were those in the boat with Noah (vs 23).

When God looked at Noah, He saw someone who alone was righteous. Let that sink in. There wasn’t anyone else in God’s eyes who fit that description.

He saw someone who stood in stark contrast to the surrounding culture. Noah didn’t conform to the morals and standards of the day. If he had, God would not have called him to this task.

God saw a man who did everything as he was commanded. There was no partial obedience.

APPLY:
If I want to be used by God, I must worship Him in the details. Am I living righteously? Am I obedient to what He has commanded? Noah’s obedience had a far reaching impact on those closest to him - his family. I can’t help but think that if we exercise radical obedience, we might see God do some things around us that we never thought possible!

MEDITATE:
“It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith, Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.” Hebrews 11:7

PRAY:
Jesus, teach me to SHOW you my love in the way I obey.

Why did God send a great flood?

There are many varying perspectives on the precise meaning of Genesis 6:1-4, but one thing that we can’t escape is that there was a growing evil on the earth.

The creation that He once said was “very good” (Genesis 1:31) had now broken His heart! The evil was so bad, and the darkness was so dark that He needed to intervene.

God takes sin very seriously. He is just and must punish sin.

God also takes righteousness very seriously. In fact, He is looking for people like Noah who live according to His Word.

A right heart is a heart God can use. When I obey Jesus and leave my sin, I am free to be used by Him.

2 Chronicles 16:9a says “For the eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.”

Jesus, please search my heart and show me the things that don’t glorify you.

Why did many disciples turn away from Jesus?

I think about communion. The grape juice and cracker - a picture of the broken body of Jesus and His blood that was poured out on the cross. He endured all that to save me from my sins, so that if I would believe on His sacrifice, I could be forgiven and experience an eternity with Him in Heaven.

The message of the cross is offensive because it assumes that I can’t save myself. The cross cares nothing for my self-esteem, because it knows that left to my self-esteem, I would suffer an eternity without Christ.

It’s humiliating to admit “I am not enough,” but it’s comforting to rest in the truth that “He is enough.”

Romans 8:3 - “The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.”

To whom would I go? You have the words that give eternal life. I believe and I know You are the Holy One of God!

You might be tempted to skip the chapter with all the funny names, but don't!

What was special about a guy named Enoch? He walked closely with God - what an amazing thing to be known for!

The book of Hebrews says this about him: "It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying - 'he disappeared, because God took him.' For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God." - Hebrews 11:5

For deeper reading, check out the book of Jude - Enoch is quoted in verses 14 & 15. This guy, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied about the future coming of the Lord to bring judgement on false teachers.

Why did Jesus perform miracles? Jesus said that his miracles (and teachings) prove that He was sent by God as the Messiah.

Why does that matter? Consider the audience. As Jesus healed a paralyzed man, He was met with criticism by the religious leaders! Not only that - because He claimed to be the Son of God, those religious leaders wanted to kill Him! 😳

The miracles that He did, and the things He taught astounded everyone. They couldn't argue with His words, and they certainly couldn't argue with the miracles themselves. People responded differently - some chose to believe - and others chose to reject.

How did the woman at the well recognize that Jesus is the Messiah? He told her everything she ever did! Wow - just imagine what it must have been like to meet Jesus like that. He knew her past and all the things she had done (the stuff she wasn't proud of) - and he still offered her something called "living water."

John 7:37-39 explains a little more about "living water" & we can see the results of "living water" in Acts 2 & beyond! Exciting stuff.

This woman at the well became sort of an evangelist because she ran back to the village and told the people about this man she had met. Many people in the village believed in Jesus because of what she had said. Never underestimate the power of YOUR testimony!

Why did Adam and Eve have to leave the Garden of Eden? They sinned. They did exactly what God said NOT to do.

And... it began with a question from a snake, "did God really say..."

Jesus said "The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life." - John 10:10.

Adam and Eve got ripped off big time! That act of disobedience meant they lost the garden and their incredible fellowship with God. Where did Jesus perform His first miracle, and what made Him angry?

His first miracle was performed at a wedding celebration. While the intent of the miracle was so that His disciples would believe (verse 11) - I do think the fact that it happened at a wedding was significant. If you are married (or hope to be married someday), Jesus cares about that all-important relationship. He loves you and your spouse - and He loves your family!

So, what made Him angry? I'll let you figure that part out yourself. 😉
It may surprise you to see Jesus express anger - but it's an important part of His character. I need to be more like Jesus and get angry about the right things!
