Anna HeardinLondon

Short weekly tips and tricks to apply to every day life from HeardinLondon and SelfCareSchool.co.uk

I'm Anna, a mindset coach, empowerment photographer, feminist, Buddhist and circus expert with a strong focus on social justice and how to find creative solutions to help people reclaim their bodies and minds.

I am on a fierce mission to equip people with the mindset tools they need to break through their own self-sabotage and live their wildest dreams.

And I don't think we should all just magically know how to manage our minds, if no one ever teaches us.

Fear of Success - Spam Filter For Your Brain - Episode 80

On this episode of Spam Filter for Your Brain, HeardinLondon (that's me, but I speak in a weird third person for the algorithm) I talk about fear and self doubt. Fun times.

Key Themes:

  • How fear of success manifests as self-sabotage
  • Why stepping out of our comfort zone feels so damn awful
  • Recognising the tendency to play small and stay hidden is probably very normal and you can probably stop being so mean to yourself about it

Full transcript:

https://www.heardinlondon.com//post/fear-of-success

🌯 Takeaways:

  1. Historical Context: Learn why comparison was essential for our ancestors’ survival and how these ancient mechanisms still influence us today.

  2. Comparison in the Modern World: Understand how platforms like Instagram leverage our innate tendency to compare, often to sell products.

  3. Self-Reflection: Discover how acknowledging your feelings of comparison can be a powerful tool for self-improvement rather than self-criticism.

  4. Self-Care Strategies: Gain practical advice on how to transform feelings of inadequacy into actions that promote a sense of security, comfort, and happiness in your own life.

🔑 Key Quotes:

  • "Our brain's primary job is to keep us alive, and comparison has been a vital tool in that mission."

  • "Rather than shaming ourselves for comparing, we should recognise it as a natural response and a chance to learn about our deepest needs."

What to do when you cannot decide what to do - Spam Filter For Your Brain - Episode 33

On this episode of Spam Filter for Your Brain, we explore the idea of happiness and how constantly seeking it can actually make us unhappy. We explore emotions and self-awareness and intentional decision-making. I discuss the concept of escaping emotions and how society promotes a binary view of right and wrong, happy and unhappy, which can lead to self-criticism. We look at how to develop awareness and control over our preferences and responses to different experiences in life.

Key Takeaways:

  • Why chasing happiness is not the cure-all we have been sold it to be
  • Why trying to escape your emotions rarely works
  • Why right or wrong or binary thinking makes us more judgemental and less happy or unhappy

Spam FIlter for Your Brain Podcast Episode 20: "But I don't have time" show notes:

This week we are looking at:

  • One of the most common objections people have when it comes to taking on new things is "I don't have time."
  • Managing your mindset and taking care of your emotional health can actually give you more time, as feeling overwhelmed and close to burnout can exhaust you and make everything take more effort.
  • By giving yourself tools to filter your thoughts and emotions and ask yourself if they are serving you, aligning with your values, and getting you closer to where you want to be, you can start to make more strategic decisions ahead of time.
  • Prioritising your emotional well-being can seem counterintuitive, but it can help you make more effective use of your time.
  • By having a toolkit to lean on in times of stress, you can step back and take on more of an observer's viewpoint, which can help you make decisions that align with your values and goals.

I want to talk today about the benefits of feeling your feelings. Quite often when you hear the phrase "feeling your feelings", it sounds like hippie stuff that is all very well and good when you have the time for a bit of deep thought work, introspection. And I wanted to tell you a little story that happened to me yesterday about the practical uses of feeling your feelings and how, when we get our heads into this space of entwining our emotional well-being into our everyday life, the benefits of it.So yesterday I had an appointment with the optician. And my eyesight has changed a lot since my first bout of COVID. And now I've had COVID four times. My vision has changed considerably, and I'm struggling with balance and spatial awareness. And I'm very aware that I needed to get this looked into. So I made an appointment with the optician I've been with for 20 years, near my old workplace. So it's my old journey into work. It's a journey I've done hundreds, if not thousands, of times. And because of what my body's up to now, I don't leave the house very much. I spend a lot of time at home and rarely go into town. So it leaves me with tremendous fatigue and a set of all my symptoms when I get exhausted. So I went into town to go to the optician, and I arrived at the train station next to the City of London, a hectic rush hour. I'm already tired of walking with a mobility aide in a busy environment with lots of people and where people tend to barge into you you live in a larger body, people do that anyway. They think you can get through the same amount of space that they can and don't have that awareness of other people around them. I'm the only person wearing a mask because of my health and for the sake of the people. And I find myself in this hubbub, like a film scene of many exquisite people, all in their office attire, and I feel a little bit out of breath and exhausted and big and taking up a lot of room. And everyone's dashing around me, and I suddenly realise I don't know where the optician is anymore. And I don't mean I don't know where it is anymore like I need to figure out how to get there. I am cannot determine where I am. I know I'm meant to be going to this appointment, and my brain has just deleted that information. It's somewhere I have been so many times and it was really distressing. It was distressing to know that I knew that I was on two streets, in theory, away from somewhere. I didn't even know which direction to face. I got myself really confused, and the more I saw that I should know this, the more my brain started to spiral on other instances, I've recently had the information I should know about people I love, their names that have gone out of my head when I'm staring at them. And it isn't the tip of your tongue "I should know that", it's vital information. I lose my cognition and the ability to form words. And it's a very distressing thing. And what I could have chosen to do in this situation, and many previous mes would have chosen to do, is to get panicky and think about all the dire consequences of "the fear of losing my mind" or losing my way, quite literally, of not having the information and the cognitive function to keep me safe, in what suddenly felt like a very unsafe environment. And I could have just spiralled of from there and done a whole load of very unhelpful things. I probably former me, would have exhausted myself more, like determining that I was going to walk in any direction and I was going to damn well, I find it, but I don't have the ability to do that anymore. Or maybe I would have decided that I couldn't do it and it wasn't safe and gone home. Or maybe I would have this.... It's hard to imagine myself in a new, you know, a situation I've never faced before. But what I realised was going on for me was that I was frightened, and I checked in with myself. What I needed was to acknowledge quite how sad this all is. And I'm out there trying to get on with my life in this new bod

What if you couldn't get things wrong? It feels like quite a brain breaking question, doesn't it? Because it seems so obvious and logical to us that there's a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things, when actually these things are not empirical truths out there in the world. "There's the good stuff and the bad stuff." Because if it was an empirical truth, people wouldn't be able to have different opinions about them. And you can find for most outcomes for anything, there's someone with a contradictory opinion about it. What I invite you to get curious about with this episode, maybe this week, pondering as you go about your days, is what if the idea of getting something wrong was merely just another stick that we use to beat ourselves up with? It is something that we've been socialized into to constantly second guess ourselves, to try and make sure that we don't have enough courage or agency over our own decisions. And so we're constantly having to defer to other people to just check in, and validate us and make sure that everything that we're doing is okay. And really, what we're doing by this is we're handing over our power to other people in other people's opinions.I believe that whatever occurs and whatever decisions we are trying to make is because we're trying to seek out a feeling or an emotion to try and feel a particular way. So when we try and think about something in the past which may not have worked out according to plan or with a whole load more information, in hindsight, we wish they had unfolded in a different manner. What we are really saying to ourselves is if something else had occurred in the world, or I had made different choices, I would be able to feel a different emotion. And what I invite you to get a little bit curious about this week, as you bobbing along thinking about whether I'm right or wrong and, is to really think about actually what is the emotion that I was seeking and where is that available to me now? re there any places in my life that shows up? And are there any places in my life where that emotion is available to me that I could expand upon? Because the truth is that no matter what decisions we make, whether it is, I mean, I would use air quotes if I could use them on a podcast, but whether it is "right" or "wrong", what we actually are always seeking is an emotion and emotions are created by the thoughts that we have in our heads. Our emotions are not little puddles that we fall into as we splash about our day. Our emotions are created by the thoughts that we have about things. And so if this is a true thing, that we create our emotions with our thoughts, then no matter what decisions are made, we can choose how we feel about them because we can choose our thoughts.I know it's a bit of a brain breaking concept, but actually you can train your brain to think things which align you more with your values and more with your mission and more towards the goals that you want to seek out in life. And if it sounds like quite a strange concept to be able to train your brain how to think about things, it's how we learn everything that we've ever known. It's how you learn how to ride a bike, if you can. It's how you learn how to speak language, many of them, some of you. It's how you learned to jump in puddles. Let's stick with that analogy. It's how you learn that, you know, maybe that smile might be a flirt. It's all of the things that we have ever learned in our lives. It's because we've trained our brains to think particular thoughts. And some of those thoughts come from people around us. Some of them come from schools, have come from our families, some of them come from the times and the society that we live in. But we can take this concept of training our brain into believing particular things, and we can make this so that we are always striving towards building more of what we want and the values we want in our life.So next time something doesn't work out according t

Episode 6 - Spam FIlter for Your Brain - You are worthy, just as you are

This should have been podcast number one, but it's here, and it's here in the right place, and hopefully, you'll be listening to it at the right time for you. It's a really important message that you should try and remind yourself every opportunity you can and remind everyone you love every chance you get. And the news is that you don't have to be fixed to be worthy of love.

My programs, workshops, and coaching all run through self-care school and the idea of coaching people can often have is that you create better versions of yourself. You need to be improved, and you need to be fixed, and you need to change things about yourself to become better or better or more lovable or worthy.

And I have a great big spoiler for you that you are already worthy. You are worthy just because you exist. You are the most glorious bundle of unique human cells that the universe created in this great big rolling rock of water, dust, starlight, and magic. You are as incredibly valuable as the first daffodil you see, the rainbow that takes your breath away, and the crunch of autumn leaves.

You are made of the same stuff we are in this world for such a brief moment. It is a devastating shame that we spend so much time convincing ourselves that we are not precious and valuable. Because when you sink back into the realisation that all of us are just trying the best with what we know, we all are all as brilliant and as glorious and as messy and as confused and as fabulously irritating as everybody else on the planet.

It just frees up so much more time. And that time is when you can care for other people better. You can build your dreams so you can go puddle jumping, read books, do more meaningful work, and sit and pick your nose to the clouds if you want to. It allows you more life when you can loosen up that thought that something inherently broken about you has to be hidden, disguised or solved for you to be worthy of love.

You don't have to believe me that you are worthy and precious just as you are. But I invite you to get curious about the idea that what if it could be possible? What if it was possible that you're as brilliant as a sparkly scale? Maybe. No. The best analogy is that gasp you get in your belly when you see a shooting star, or like the twinkle in your eye when you spot two people floating on the tube.

Like all of this, life is life that you get to experience. And the more kindness you create for yourself, the more kindness there is in the world, the more compassion you create for yourself, the more compassion there is in the world, and the more respect you create for yourself. Not only the more respect there is in the world, but the more time you have to support other people to have their lives respected.

It's so important that we stop trying to undermine ourselves so that you can free up our time to do the really important stuff in life. And I'm here to champion you through the photo photoshoot. So the course is just my dolsot hackneyed tones in your ears. I'm here to be able to support you, and those doubts arise, and they will arise.

And that's okay. Does it mean anything is going wrong? Does it mean that suddenly you're a terrible person because you know this stuff on paper, but you don't feel it yet? So good. Whatever you're up to now, we're all trying our best. It's all good. Maybe, it's all going to be okay. This is my little missive to you this week.

I hope that it's useful.

Spam Filter for your Brain - Episode 5 - The Art of Disappointment

What could you achieve in your life if you were willing to feel disappointed? But let's take a little step back. What does disappointment feel like to you? Where is it in your body? What kind of thoughts come up for you when you feel disappointed? Disappointment is this insidious emotion that convinces us that we are in danger and that we probably shouldn't try and that we you don't want to put all of your eggs in one basket.

And generally, if you can keep yourself in a mild state of anxiety and disappointment, you won't experience any disappointment or anxiety later. The way that we approach this feeling of disappointment, it's like a fire blanket to everything that lights your life up and puts that little sparkle into your days. We fear disappointment like it's poison in our lives.

And in many ways, it is. It's poison to you being able to take risks that stretch to a place where you can learn new things and experience new things and step out of your comfort zone, and stepping out of our comfort zone means that there might be a risk that we could get something wrong and our brains panic when we think that we might get something wrong.

And your brain is hardwired to try and keep our lives small, safe, and protected. Your brain's job is to try and keep you alive, not to be your friend. So we are genetically disposed to try and be as fearful as possible. And fear doesn't always arrive with hazard tape, flashing signs, and danger noises. Sometimes fear is very clever, and our brains are very clever at tricking us into trying to ensure that we don't do anything that will jeopardise our safety.

Like, I don't know, returning that text message or going to that party or asking for a pay raise or deciding that you're going to write a book or swim the channel or anything else that you feel might be slightly like, what do you what are your big goals that you're planning for the New Year? Quite often, you might have some burning desire that you used to have when you were a kid, and for some reason, namely, the fear of disappointment that's sidelined.

And we present it in very pragmatic terms, like, Oh, I need to be realistic when we're the ones who decide what is. We make all of this stuff up. We’re the grown-ups. We get to make the rules now, and so fear arrives in sneaky little ways. That's going to try and convince you that the thing that you're about to do is probably not a good idea, and fear might arrive for you in the shape of, Oh, I don't have enough time, or that's going to be a lot of effort, or I don't have the skills that other people are better than me.

Other people might laugh at me. How does fear show up for you? Because when it is a feeling of disappointment, it sneaks around the edges like a little bit of an oil slick. And you notice that maybe you're not taking any actions towards the things that really could put a sparkle in your eye and fill your soul.

We have so many opportunities during this New Year period to reflect on the things we want to create and craft and bring into our lives for the coming New Year. And this is a fantastic opportunity for you to pause and think about if you knew that you could survive feeling disappointed. What would you choose to do next year?

What would your big goals be? And when I say you're willing to feel disappointed, that might feel icky to you. But if you think about what disappointment feels like in your body, when you name the physical sensations that alert you to the fact that it is the emotion that's going on, somehow all the fire and the heaviness of it is slightly reduced.

Learning how to let boundaries for yourself and others.

'Tis the time of year when people pleasing comes to the fore. This time of year, there is so much obligation from work, colleagues, friends, and family. So many different angles that everybody else has a clear expectation of what everybody else should do that may not align with what you want to do. So this Christmas, I have a little dare for you: to put yourself on the list.

It is to centre your own needs and ensure that you look after your own well-being. So what is it that you'll need to take me through this period to make sure that you feel safe, looked after, heard, loved, and respected? And what could make it joyful for you?

I think quite often, we all put into situations, especially people who are socialised as women, come across situations where we can believe that if we do enough things and we behave in a certain way, we are nice enough that we put everybody else first, that we don't consider our own needs, that other people will think a particular way about us.

They might think that we are a nice, obliging, kind, all of the niceties that big blue and sage, as women, are often to is the object of our respect in society, and often historically has been the way that it has kept us safe within any kind of social dynamic. And I invite you this year to look at ways that you ignore your own needs and ignore your body's needs, ignore your rest needs, ignore your emotional well-being, needs to prioritise somebody else's.

Because if you are not looking after yourself, there will be less of you to go policing those other people in the first place. But most importantly, when we cut through all of this, hoping that our behaving in a particular way can make another person feel a particular thing. I'd really like you to look at the reality of what people-pleasing is.

Sadly, people pleasing is not the flex we think this is because people pleasing is going out of our way to try and manipulate how another person feels about us by doing things that we quite often don't want to do. It's stretching ourselves beyond our limits, beyond our measures, to try and make sure that someone else thinks we are incredibly kind and generous.

We are incredibly gracious. Whatever it is that we are hoping someone else to think about us. We're trying to make them think that by doing something that we don't want to do and this behaviour can come out so prevalently at Christmas. It can mean that at the end of the holidays, quite often you are left needing a holiday, and that doesn't have to be the case if you put yourself on the list, if you look after your wellbeing, if within any dynamic or any circumstances if it starts to feel a bit scratchy or a bit uncomfortable, check in with yourself and see where you're not having your own back, where you're not looking after your wellbeing, where you haven't prioritised or even asked yourself what you need here. This is the best gift that you could give yourself this Christmas. That feeling of safety and that feeling of well-being is what gives us space to feel joy. This season, and without looking after yourself, joy is not centered. And this is what I wish for you.

For you to have a peaceful, joyful time where you listen to yourself, and you are definitely top of your own Christmas list. I hope you manage to survive this week with loads of self-care, and I look forward to seeing you next week.

In this episode we talk about why it is important to show up for yourself and others, why it can feel intimidating to have your photograph taken and why that is ok. And let's do it anyway.

It seems apt that the first thing that I speak about on this podcast is the idea of showing up for yourself.

I'm a photographer who works to help people get their sense of self back; to help them see their bodies as worthy, to see themselves as worthy of taking up space, and to be able to see themselves through the eyes of someone who sees him with respect and compassion and see all of their magic.

If I was to summarise my capacity as a photographer, it is to be able to look at someone in a room and see them as the most incredible, amazing human being. And because that is how I see people as I walk through the world, obviously holding a very expensive bit of glass and aluminium in front of my face and clicking a button and capturing that comes easily to me- because that's how I view people.

Seeing yourself looked at with that amount of respect and love and compassion is such a different story than the story that a lot of us tell ourselves when we look into the mirror. And the reason it is really important about having photographs of yourself taken by someone who is showing you respect is that you see so many different facets of yourself. We are very prone to looking in the mirror with a particular mindset, with a particular set of judgments, with a particular story that we attach to it. And what we don't see is all of the other angles with our face and all of the other things that probably all the people who know and love us know well. Like seeing those little expressions they might catch, or those little mannerisms that you've never even noticed about yourself, because we don't observe ourselves that much.

And I have a very unscientific view of world that people are able to make slightly more confident life choices when they have photographs of themselves where they think they look a bit hot.

I urge you to create more visions of yourself, where you're able to look at yourself with respect. Obviously if you're in London come and have a photoshoot with me, but wherever you are in the world, wherever you are in in your life, if there are people around you who see you with the kind of love and compassion that you would wish to see yourself, ask them to take some pictures of you. See what they can see that you can't. Because the more of us that show up for ourselves, the more of us that allow ourselves to be seen, the more of ourselves, the more of us who are willing to put ourselves out there the more people who look a little bit like us might have a chance of feeling like they are seen and like they're worthy of taking space.

I'm sure nearly everybody listening to this would definitely have benefited from someone who looked a bit like them being in a prominent position of respect and adoration and love and care when they were growing up. When you were growing up and formulating your own opinions about what the world looked like. Imagine if there was just a huge variety of people who were able to feel welcome and cherished and worthy of respect and how different the world would look.

And I want you to take accountability for your place in that, because if this big old variety of people who are out there being seen, whether it is on billboards, or on television, or showing up on social media, or just being welcome on the cover of books, wherever they are. If that doesn't include you, you are excluding an element of faces, body shapes, abilities, skin tones. And maybe insecurities from the bigger picture.
