Hey guys it's RJ and Kalhil. In today's episode Anna has graciously agreed to rejoin us in order to discuss the topic of Independence vs Interdependence. We live in a society that espouses independence as a necessary social norm for individuals that reach a certain age. Don’t get me wrong, being independent is an achievement to strive for in our life but is it the highest form of character development? For most of us independence is seen as I can do it by myself, I am responsible, I am self-reliant, I don’t need anybody or anything.

For most of us, we conceptualize or compartmentalize independence as us being an island or a country all to ourselves, and at times developing a fear of being dependent on others. This makes us skittish or fearful of others telling us what to do, having some form of control over us, defining us in some way, or manipulating us. But is independence an actual mature mindset or just our inner urge to exhibit to the world that we can survive alone?

Everything around us in this world is interdependent in some form or fashion. Everything in nature understands the need of both mutual and symbiotic relationships to maintain the natural cycle, and we as human beings are no different than nature. Interdependence often gets misconstrued by people and seen by many as being forced into reliance on others, colleagues, a spouse/partner, or even our parents. And as a result, people often will often forgo or pass on their relationships, social responsibility, and their commitments. Join us as we unpack this topic and have an honest conversation about it.

Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys its RJ, Unique, and Kalhil! In today's episode we're going to be discussing the Importance of Parenthood. One of the most difficult and rewarding jobs that an adult can undertake in life is Parenthood. Parenthood is role is an important one that transcends all boundaries and cultures. Traditionally, this term was associated with those who birth a child, but in today's society this has changed into something much more complex and intricate. Someone who is a parent doesn't necessarily have to share DNA with the child, but actively participates in the raising and developing of a fully functional person. From birth children rely on those to help both prepare them for, as well as aid them in navigating through the many twists and turns that life will throw their way. The importance of having a "Parent" or "Parents" be active and consistently in your life is something that can't be understated. For this episode, the cast is being joined by Anna for this conversation. She juggles the complexities of maintaining being a mom with that of being both a student and hard-working professional. Due to Anna's unique perspective, she has a unique and invaluable perspective on this topic. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys its RJ, Unique, and Kalhil! In today's episode we're going to be discussing Socially Acceptable Behavior. Socially acceptable behaviors are those actions that that are normally viewed as appropriate to engage in when in the presence of others. It's mind blowing that as progressive of a society that we live in 2023, we're still having to discuss what's socially acceptable. For those of you who don't follow sports the NCAA Women's Basketball tournament concluded on April 2nd. What should've been a celebration for a "lifetime of hard work a dedication" all culminating with the winning of a national championship by LSU turned into media spectacle. What made it a spectacle was when one of the winning players, Angel Reese hit the John Cena in the direction of one of the players on the opposing team Caitlin Clark. Caitlin, coincidentally had done the exact same thing 48 hours previously when her team beat the University of South Carolina. What makes this interesting is that when Caitlin did the John Cena it was seen as competitive, but when Angel did it, it was seen as classless and a sign of a poor sport. Please join us as we discuss this topic. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys it's RJ and Unique! In today's episode we're going to be discussing Violence in Schools. I know that we have all heard at one point in time that children are our future. To prepare children for the future, we send them to school for them to learn and assist them with obtaining the things necessary at that next stage in life. Making sure that children have a learning environment that is safe and conducive for growth and development is a major priority for a multitude of agencies and organizations as well as parents. Aas we tune into the news we have been able to see that there has been a steady increase in the number of school shootings with each passing decade. In the 2020s alone there have been at least 126, with 8 occurring in March of 2023. Even though school violence is not a new  phenomenon, ensuring the safety of the students in attendance remains a major concern. In today's episode we're going to have a deep, real, and honest conversation to speak Violence in Schools. Hey guys it's RJ and Unique! In today's episode we're going to be discussing Accountability. Accountability is critical for both performance and innovation, because WE ALL need things to guide us and keep us on track. It can be both internal and external. Accountability assist us perform at our peak because we generally want to hold true to our commitments and it reminds us of them. When a sense of responsibility as well as clearly defined expectations are absent, that is where our pride, fears, doubts, biases, and inclination to be self-serving lead us to be exhibiting dishonest or dishonorable tendencies. We're seeing this everywhere in society, as no one really answers to anyone let alone themselves. Hey guys it's RJ, Unique, and Kalhil! In today's episode we're going to be discussing Representation Mattering. Being the "only" or the "token" in a sea of majorities is something that as African Americans we learned to embrace. Representation in everyday life is essential. We all want to feel that we belong and that we can either relate to something or someone. Ever since we were children we consumed comics, movies, and cartoons where there weren't always protagonist/ main characters that looked like us, sounded like us, or came from where we came from. As society has become more progressive, we have come a long way in embracing people of many different nationalities, races, religions, creeds, sexual orientations, as well as socioeconomic background. This growth towards inclusion and away from exclusion has seen so many positive changes occur that I thought it was important that we talk about it in today's episode. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys it's RJ, Unique, and Kalhil! In today's episode we're going to be discussing Having a Support System. For all of us there comes a time when we strike out and may want to accomplish things on our own. Most times, this feeling can be liberating and other times it can create a sense of loneliness. Life was not meant to be experienced alone and that's where a support system comes into play. It doesn't make you weak or less than to rely on others around you, as having others who are there for you through think and thin is a point of strength and should not be seen as a point of weakness. Having people in your corner that you can trust and turn to when you're in need can help you manage everyday struggles, work through a crisis, or make difficult decision. A support system can take many different forms and can include people such as family, friends, significant others, as well as colleagues. The point of a support system is to both keep you grounded as well as keep you headed in the right direction. When times get tough, your support system is what will help you navigate and get through it all. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys it's RJ, Unique, and Kalhil! In today's episode we're going to be discussing Taking Your Relationship to the Next Level. When it comes to relationships, there are certain expectations that should be met if you want to deepen your connection and see your relationship both grow and thrive. For many of us with our busy lives, we can easily forget what is important in a relationship and what isn’t; we might focus on certain tangible aspects of the other person such as what kind of job they have, how much money they make, what kind of car they drive, or how sexy their body is. Although these things are good qualities to have in a partner, a relationship isn’t built on superficial things. It sometimes can even be a stressor in our relationships. When you share yourself with your partner through physical affection or sex that is an opportunity for us to connect on a deeper level than words alone. Physical intimacy is about touching and closeness of our bodies. In a romantic relationship it could include things like hand holding, hugging, kissing, and most importantly sex. A relationship doesn't have to be romantic or sexual to have physical intimacy. Something simply as a high five, a fist bump, or a hug can suffice. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys it's RJ, Unique, and Kalhil! In today's episode we're going to be discussing Double Standards. We find ourselves residing in an extremely progressive society. With that being said as far as we’ve progressed as a society in establishing equality numerous unaddressed issues remain as hurdles in our path to complete impartiality and equality. It goes without saying that these injustices apply to all genders, races, and backgrounds, regardless of one’s identity. These injustices continue to cause both separation and division in our society as long as we allow them to exist as normalized patterns of behavior. It ultimately begs the question, "If we truly are equal if the same things aren't applicable to everyone?" Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys it's RJ, Chasmine, and Kalhil!  In today’s episode we're going to be discussing the Dangers of the Internet and Social Media. We find ourselves in a  society where we're constantly inundated with messages via our smart devices. The internet and by extension social media, have become pathways where we can be whoever we imagine ourselves to be. These platforms have turned into places where you can find yourself  constantly wearing a mask. This doesn’t mean you’re not yourself, but rather the most ideal version of yourself. Where you may attempt to come across that you’re endlessly happy or attempt to hide the parts of yourself that don’t make you feel that way.  By living a life broadcasted over the internet, it gives people  unfettered and unrestricted access to both you and your loved ones. This can have negative consequences, as not all attention is good attention. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys it’s Unique and RJ! In today’s episode we're going to be discussing Standards. They are what guide us as well as what help to keep us on track. Without standards we would find ourselves drifting aimlessly or potentially lost altogether. Standards can be applicable to both the personal and professional arenas of our lives. It has been our experience that in order to have a fulfilling life a person has to identify their standards, be willing to stick to them, and readjust them as necessary all the while balancing them against their expectations. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. We all find ourselves wanting to start the new year as a new version of ourselves, not realizing that the things that are stopping us from achieving this are the bad habits that we bring with us from the previous year. To stop this cycle of unmet goals we must first address the habits that are impeding us from being the best versions of ourselves. As my father has always told me, “In order to have things you’ve never had, you must be willing to do things you’ve never done”. So, to reach that lofty goal of being a new you in the new year, you must shake off those bad habits that are getting in your way. Hey guys it's RJ, Chasmine, and Kalhil! In today’s episode we're going to be speaking on Positive Self Worth. We all from time to time lack confidence, question or doubt ourselves, or even criticize ourselves. If this is happening frequently you may be experiencing low self-esteem and not even realize it. As providers we believe that everyone has both worth and value, and we felt that it was imperative that we touch on the subject of establishing Positive Self Worth. When a person has a Positive Self Worth they have both trust and faith in their abilities and themselves. This also means that you think that your thoughts, feelings, and values have and bring worth to every situation that you find yourself in. Hey guys it's Unique and RJ! We all have often heard people say that “good relationships require hard work” or that “fights or arguments are normal”. This may be true in some instances, but there is a clear and distinct difference between being in a relationship that is positive and constructive and one that is toxic and detrimental. A toxic relationship is one that makes you feel devalued, taken for granted, unsupported, misunderstood, demeaned, or under attack. Often times a person in a toxic relationship will find their well-being is threatened in some kind of way rather that be mentally, emotionally, physically, or spiritually. In today’s episode we’re going to take a deep dive into toxic relationships and have a real honest conversation about them. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys it's RJ and Kalhil! In today’s society, single parent families have become even more common than the “traditional” or “nuclear family” consisting of a mother, father, and children. Presently, we’re seeing all sorts of single parent families led by mothers, fathers, and even by a grandparent raising their grandchildren. Life inside the household of a single parent, although common, can be quite stressful for both the adult and the children. Single parent families deal with many other pressures and potential problem areas that other families may not face. Along with those pressures there also comes misconceptions associated with being a single parent. In today’s episode we decided to bring on someone who has lived experience being both a professional as well as being single parent. Today’s guest, LaKrisha T. Coleman is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with over 15 years of experience in working with children and adults in a variety of settings. She is both the owner of and operator of her private practice, Hearts to Heal Counseling and Consultation, LLC where her mission is to aide in the healing of the most vulnerable pain that is carried from the innocence of childhood into the uncertainty of adulthood. We’re hoping that her testimony can help shed some light on and clear up some misconceptions about what it means to be a single parent. If you interested in inquiring about her services, she can be found at Hearts2healcc.com. As always, our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Violence in today’s society has become ever more common. In years past an act of violence would draw massive attention, but now it has become so common that people are no longer stunned by violence covered by the media. It seems like every day we wake up to someone passing away tragically as a result of violence of some kind. This is unacceptable because each life is precious and is irreplaceable, and society should never accept violence or the loss of innocent lives. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys it's Chasmine, Unique, Kalhil, and RJ! This episode is concerning Being a Woman in Today's Society and why it is important. In our last episode we spoke on the men, and we felt that it was just as equally important to speak on the ladies as well. Just as with the young men in today's society, young women have no clear path to guide them on being the best versions of themselves. In this episode as we did in the last one, we want to shine a blazing light on what being a Woman in today's society really means. Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker. Hey guys it's RJ, Kalhil, and Unique! This episode is concerning Being a Man in Today's Society and why it is important. Presently in today's society there is no clear path to guide young men into becoming the best versions of themselves and thriving. With the lack of consistent, positive, and willing grown men to exhibit what "right looks like" a lot of young men find that they have to make their way through life without clear guidance or instruction.  As we grow and evolve it is exceedingly important that we have positive influences whom we can model and emulate.  With this episode our goal is to shed a light on what makes a "man" a "man" in more than just title, but also through his actions. As Dale Carnegie once said, "Pay less attention to what men say. Just watch what they do.” Our hope is that our listeners will get something from this deep, honest, and real conversation from the viewpoint of both a Licensed Professional Counselors and a Licensed Social Worker.
