It's been a long time since I did a show about the top episodes of The Andy Griffith Show so I thought to celebrate the 750th podcast we'd have some fun with the top 10 episodes.
This list of top 10 comes from The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club web site poll that's been going on for years. There have been 19,281 votes cast one vote at a time. Meaning, each person only votes for one episode when filling out the form.
We'll list out from ten down to one and give you some "odd facts know by few" for each episode as we go. Hopefully you'll have as much fun being reminded of the episodes as I did.

I'm always looking for things we may never have seen related to our friends in Mayberry. That being stories, photos, articles, or just about anything touching on either the characters on The Andy Griffith Show or the actors who played them.
I recently ran across an article from the Los Angeles Times from January 12, 1960 titled "Howard McNear as Acting Specialist" and felt like I had struck gold. There isn't any talk about his time on The Andy Griffith Show because McNear first appeared as Floyd in the episode "Mayberry Goes Hollywood" on January 2, 1961, almost a year after this article was published. He had already been a barber on TV tough because he appeared as "Andy the barber" on season 2, episode 8 of "Leave it to Beaver" called "The Shave" (November 20, 1958). It was a memorable yet fairly small role that may have paved the way to Mayberry.
I realize I'm a bit biased toward this actor but I hope you'll enjoy hearing a bit more about him and his career before "Floyd." I've done nine episodes of the podcast about Howard McNear but since I've done about 740 episode that are not about him, I think I'm balancing pretty well.

This is a first for me. An "in studio" guest here on the podcast. Kenneth Junkin, who is a tribute artist for Otis and seen in the Mayberry Man movie is here with me to tell some stories.
Kenneth has been on the show many times but we've never been here at Two Chairs HQ to record. He'll tell us stories about Don Knotts, Betty Lynn, George Lindsey, Sue Ane Langdon (nurse Mary Simpson), Ernest Borgnine, Donna Douglas and more. Kenneth has been involved with Mayberry events since the very early 1990's and has been performing as Otis since 1995.
I hope you enjoy this conversation and walk away feeling the excitement both Kenneth and I feel when talking about The Andy Griffith Show and those connected to it through either being on or being a fan of the show. We have been so blessed in all the things we've been able to do so I hope you can live some of the joy along with us.

The Surry Arts Council has been having an auction of items that belonged to Betty Lynn, Mayberry's own Thelma Lou, in order to raise money for the arts in Mt. Airy, NC. The auction just ended but it brought to mind the impact that Betty had on the city of Mt. Airy during the time she lived in the community.
I found this article about Betty moving to "Mayberry" that I'm sure you'll enjoy. She was such a wonderful person to be around and is greatly missed but her legacy certainly lives on every time we watch The Andy Griffith Show and also in support of the arts in Mt. Airy.

This past weekend was the Mayberry Meet-up 2023 so I wanted to give y'all a report about what went on and encourage you to join us in the future. So many fun things happen when you're with fellow Mayberry fans and I want you encourage you to join in with us at some event near you.
This episode may be best consumed as a video version because I show photos and things that I believe you'd enjoy seeing but I think the audio will get you most of the way there so it is, of course, your choice.
I found a video from 10 years ago on "Floyd" singing with Rodney Dillard and the Dillard Band. What an honor that was and I remember it so clearly that I find it hard to believe it was 10 years ago. I think you'll enjoy it. Floyd sang "House of the Rising Floyd" so it has a Mayberry twist.

On July 1, 2023, the Mayberry Man movie became FREE to stream on several platforms to include Tubi, EncourageTV (YouTube), Amazon Prime, Vudu, Hoopla, Emirates Airlines, and Qatar Airways. There may be other ways you can watch for free but that's a fairly large selection. Since it's now free for ALL to see, I feel safe moving forward to talk about the movie and some of what we experienced behind the scenes.
I want to give folks a chance to see it since I've been hearing from many people who only recently watched the movie. It's been really wonderful to get feedback from people that said they hadn't planned on watching Mayberry Man, or they didn't think it would be a good movie, and being told him how much they'd enjoyed it. Those are the comments I've enjoyed the most.
I'm glad they watched it and gave it a chance.
They went into it with an open mind and then took the time to message me to let me know what they thought about it.
If everyone that may have had negative thoughts about the movie takes a chance and watches it, I think a folks would change their negative thoughts to positive ones. I think they might see what many have seen when we watched Mayberry Man….that Mayberry is not just a place, it's a state of mind….and this movie does it's best to capture that feeling.

For the 11th year, Jan and I are heading to Mt. Airy for a weekend of Mayberry fun and the 11th Mayberry Meet-up. I hope you can join us! The reason we started this event was, in part, because Mayberry Days (you really should attend that event) has grown large enough that we wanted to have a chance to visit Mt. Airy and do things that there just isn’t time to do during Mayberry Days. So, the Mayberry Meet-up is a little more slow paced where you can do as much or as little as you’d like.
We will gather at the Mayberry Motor Inn gazebo to watch episodes on Friday night.On Saturday, if all goes well, Neal Brower should be at The Andy Griffith Museum theater on Saturday afternoon for a session of Professor Brower's lectures. Details on that will be provided as the event date approaches.
If you haven't (or even if you have) seen The Andy Griffith Museum, you will want to take time (a few hours) for a tour. It is amazing!
You can visit the museum website at https://www.andygriffithmuseum.org/ or call (336) 786-1604. There is a fee for touring the museum of $8 per person (adult) so keep that in mind. That cost, if on Saturday will include admission to Professor Brower’s lecture.We will gather at the Mayberry Motor Inn gazebo on Friday and Saturday evenings for visiting and to watch episodes of The Andy Griffith Show together.

You are in for a treat this week. I came down with laryngitis, or something like it, so my wife is hosting this weeks show. Jan Newsome, Mrs. Weaver herself, will be doing most all the talking and I'm just running the technical side of the show.
She asked me what she should do the show on and I told her it was her choice. She chose to give you some of her favorite quotes from The Andy Griffith Show. She organized them by character so you'll have fun remembering when these quotes were said and laughing along with us as we remember some of our favorite scenes.
Jan will give a brief report on this past weekends Mayberry Comes to Scottsburg event and if you're watching the video version, you'll see a few photos taken during the weekend. Hopefully this first Mayberry Comes to Scottsburg will be an annual event fans can look forward to attending.

Last week we talked about the first spin-off from The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., and I thought it fitting to talk about the one that was more of a continuation of the original, Mayberry R.F.D.
During the eighth and final season of The Andy Griffith Show, widower farmer Sam Jones (played by Ken Berry) and his young son Mike (played by Buddy Foster) were introduced and became a part of the Mayberry family. They continued on into the Mayberry R.F.D. series as the focus and brought much of the town of Mayberry along with them. This series kept the town alive in our hearts and minds after Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) moved away with Helen, whom he marries on the first episode of Mayberry R.F.D, and Opie.
I'm looking forward to the fact that the full series has been released on DVD and I can now be sure I've seen all the episodes.

Jim Nabors birthday is this week so I thought this would be a good time time to talk about the show that made him famous. Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. originally aired on the CBS television network from September 25, 1964, until May 2, 1969. The series was a spin-off of The Andy Griffith Show with the pilot episode airing as the fourth season finale on May 18, 1964.
Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. was also a major ratings hit, just as was it's parent from Mayberry, never placing lower than tenth in the Nielsen ratings and ending its run as the second-highest-rated series in the United States.

Two Chairs No Waiting

In the last few weeks, we heard a flashback from "Floyd" from July 13, 2010 and then the first of our old time radio (OTR) "lost" episode from June 5, 2012 called "Mayberry After Mid-day."
This week we get to hear the second OTR episode released for episode 500 of Two Chairs on October 16, 2018. The episode is called "The New Barber" was written by Joe Gritton and features Mayberry barber, Floyd Lawson, and door-to-door salesman, Bert Miller along with a few other Mayberry notables. Sit back and use your imagination to picture the goings on in Mayberry while you listen to this “old time radio” program.
These episodes were some of the hardest episodes I've ever done because of tall the sound effects, music, editing, voice acting (I do all the voices) and just putting the OTR show together. If you watch the video version of the episode you'll see the credits at the end showing everyone involved in making "The New Barber." I think you'll find the credits funny. I had forgotten them so I laughed when putting this episode together.
I hope you enjoy the episode and it really makes you feel like you're hearing a lost episode of The Andy Griffith Show.

Last week, we heard from "Floyd" who did a flashback to a time he and Bert Miller talked about going into business together. That was originally released on July 13, 2010 and was the first time I had done anything that reminded me of those old time radio (OTR) programs. It got me thinking about doing other episodes with Floyd & Bert that sound like "lost" OTR versions of The Andy Griffith Show.
It was June 5, 2012 (episode 191 & 192) before the first OTR "lost" episode was made. Writer and Two Chairs listener, Joe Gritton, provided me the script featuring Mayberry barber, Floyd Lawson, and door-to-door salesman, Bert Miller. A little over 4 years later, on July 5, 2016 (#384) I re-released the two episodes as a speical edition created to sound like an actual episode of The Andy Griffith Show from beginning to end with opening music and everything, no Two Chairs intro or anything.
“Mayberry After Mid-day” begins with Bert Miller walking down the sidewalk of Main Street heading from the Mayberry Grande toward the courthouse. As Bert nears Floyd’s barber shop, he slows down and considers sitting down for a rest on the bench outside the barber shop window but decides to head on inside. Join them now in Mayberry and hear what happens.
As a note, we lost Joe Gritton last year and I am so grateful and thankful to have these OTR episodes to remember and honor him. These type episodes are hard to do and take a long time to perform and edit together but they are some of my favorite Two Chairs episodes. We'll have another OTR Mayberry episode next week so come back if you enjoy it.

The movie came on MeTV this past weekend during "Svengoolie" and I watched it along with fans all across the country. Facebook and other social media was buzzing with comments and, while I have the DVD, there's something about being part of the audience along with fellow fans.Set in Rachel Kansas, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is in my opinion one of Don Knotts' best movies. I likely believe that because so many Mayberry townsfolk show up throughout and it's Mr. Knotts first movie after leaving The Andy Griffith Show.Don Knotts plays Luther Heggs but basically he's playing "Barney Fife" by another name because the character acts almost exactly like Barn. The movie was written by Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum who co-wrote 29 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and one episode of Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.. Andy Griffith also helped re-write the script but is uncredited for his efforts.(NOTE: Fritzell and Greenbaum DID write the episode "The Darling Baby" when the name "Halcyon Loretta Winslow" was mentioned. This year, they are kicking off the first weekend of MAYberry with the TV reunion movie, Return to Mayberry, on Sunday May 7, 2023 @4pm ET. Hopefully you aren't getting this episode late and missed it but even if you are, I think you'll find things here that you'll enjoy learning about the movie and what happened to our Mayberry friends.The movie originally aired on April 13, 1986; almost 18 years after the series ended. Sixteen original cast members reunited to reprise the characters fans all came to know and love during the 8 years of The Andy Griffith Show. On April 11, 1986 the New York Time wrote an….unfriendly review of the television movie saying it was "a less appealing reunion for the audience than it may have been for its actors." It was written in 2003 but the encounter happened in 2001. Over those years there were hundreds of stories written and published in the official newsletters called The Bullet, The eBullet, The Pocket, and The Button. The information provided was timeless. Because so many of you have never seen the stories published in the early days of TAGSRWC, Weaver's Newsletter asked Jim Clark if they could re-publish articles for fans to enjoy. Permission was granted so here's our first "rerun."The story is being published in the April 2023 edition of the Weaver's Newsletter. The Andy Griffith Show only had one episode centered around a holiday and that was, of course, Christmas. Fans have watched that episode time and again as Ben Weaver tries to get himself arrested so he can spend Christmas in jail with the Taylor's, the Muggins', and Miss Ellie. It's touched our heart every time.Each year we try to bring back that feeling as we go through our Mayberry memories of Christmas time. We also make a new memory or two in the process. We have a special guest back again this year from over in Dodge City. His name is Festus Haggen and he has a really good story to tell about Santa. Two Chairs No Waiting

This week we'll spend the entire episode diving into the November 2022 issue of The eBullet newsletter from The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC). The reason being that in this issue it is announced that this will be the last issue. After 40 years of publication in one form or anther, TAGSRWCHQ is stepping aside from writing and editing a Mayberry newsletter.
Jim Clark has been doing this work for Mayberry fans since October 1982 and we, the fans, want to thank him for bringing a smiles to our faces every other month or so for all those years. It has always been a little like Christmas morning to me when an issue of the old paper newsletter, The Bullet, arrived in my mailbox via the post office and then, in later years, in my inbox in the form of The eBullet. My face lit up and I couldn't wait to see what news there was of my Mayberry friends.
All things eventually have their time and 40 years is a good career for anyone. So, THANK YOU Jim and we'll continue to try and hold up our end of things by continuing to watch reruns and enjoy Mayberry in all its forms as much as ever.

It was so well written and it captured the way I feel about The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry in such a deep way that I asked if I could share it on the podcast. Two Chairs No Waiting

It’s the spooky time of the year and it’s a tradition here on Two Chairs to tell a spooky story or two around the campfire.
I have a couple of shorter stories that I think you'll enjoy and then, in the same feeling as “The Golden Arm,” I found “Chief Swanee’s Gold” written by Craig Dominey and Lanny Gilbert on “The Moonlit Road” podcast/website. Craig granted me permission to share that story with you and it will be followed by a version of The Golden Arm folktale.
The Golden Arm was most famously told by Mark Twain and also used by him to instruct others in how to tell a story. In 2015, I first presented the Mark Twain version of the story in episode #349. This being the spooky time of the year, I thought it was time to tell another version of the story.
This episode is spooky so be sure to keep those who might not sleep well, like Barney and Gomer, away from this episode I wouldn’t want to have anyone staring darkness trying to spot someone looking for their gold or their golden arm.

Mayberry Day 2022 has come and gone but the memories created during the event will live long in the hearts of those who were able to attend. We'll hear reports from a few folks about their experience during Mayberry Days and we'll even get one video report this week. On October 3, 1960, a man and his son walking to the fishing hole first appeared on our televisions with that happy whistling tune. The Andy Griffith Show has not been off the airways since that date and is usually on several times per day in most television markets. Pluto.TV, a free streaming app, even has an entire channel that shows nothing but The Andy Griffith Show 24 hours a day.
While it has been 62 years since the show originally aired, it remains popular with an estimated thirty-thousand fans attending the 33rd Annual Mayberry Days in held in Mt. Airy, NC the last full weekend of September 2022. The ages were from 4 to 96 and all gathered because of their love for series that ended production on April 1, 1968.
We'll talk about the Anniversary of The Andy Griffith Show and then we'll hear from SpiritWalker with his Returning to Mayberry report.

The Mayberry Man movie featured a car that was said to be a 'real' Mayberry patrol car but in actuality it was a very nice replica. That said, there is a real Mayberry patrol car located at Melody Ranch Studio in Santa Clarita Valley, CA. Since 1915, when the studio was first opened for business, an endless string of hard riding shoot-em-ups have been produced at the location. Melody Ranch Studio features a massive western town with interiors in the saloon, bank, jail, general store, hotel, church, school, livery stable, and theatre.
On top of all that, they have a car that is very much believed to have been a screen used Mayberry patrol car. We'll hear from Andre Veluzat, one of the owners of the ranch, thanks to fellow Mayberry fan Bryan Schaffer who was visiting the ranch.
We'll play some trivia and then hear from SpiritWalker with his "Returning to Mayberry" report.

Two Chairs No Waiting

Last episode we talked about the writers of The Andy Griffith Show. As I said then, they don't get mentioned as much as the actors but it was the writers that actually created the characters we all loved. Without the writers, we wouldn't have gotten the stories about Opie's Newspaper, Divorce Mountain Style, and ALL the other amazing moments that happened in Mayberry. It was the writers who created the town of Mayberry and helped the actors make it come to life.
There's an out of print book called "Inside Mayberry: 'The Andy Griffith Show' Handbook" by Dan Harrison and Bill Habeeb that gives us an entire chapter on the writers. I'm going to share the insight the Harrison & Habeeb divined in their chapter about "The Writers." I'll be doing some reading but hopefully the story told is good enjoy to excuse having the host read to you.
By popular demand, we'll finish hearing from the writers this week. Many of you asked for it…so here we go.

The writers of The Andy Griffith Show don't get mentioned as much as the actors but it was they who actually created the characters who Andy, Don and the cast portrayed. Without the writers, we wouldn't have gotten the stories about baby birds without a mamma, unusual mountain folks, and the many other special folks who live in Mayberry. It was they who created the world in which Barney and Andy lived and made it come to life.

This year marked the 10th Annual Mayberry Meet-up in Mt. Airy, NC. You might ask, "What is the meet-up" and that would be a good question so I'm gonna try and answer that by letting you hear directly from several who attended the 2022 edition. Hopefully, their reports will be fun for all and will encourage you to make plans to attend a Mayberry event in the near future.
We have eight reports about the Meet-up and three other voice messages from folks so this will be a very fun episode where we can hear from fellow Mayberry fans.

At a recent screening of the Mayberry Man movie in Tuscaloosa, AL it was mentioned by an audience member that there were things that they had learned on The Andy Griffith Show that come in handy in their everyday lives.
That got me to thinking about that because I've seen things on TV and on the Internet where folks were asked simple questions that I would think anyone would know from just having gone to high school. History, geography, and other common things that we should be aware of that it seems there are many who just have no clue.
I mean, for some of the answers, just watching The Andy Griffith Show would have been enough to give a good answer. Let's check that out.
