A big part of our lives are about relationships. As moms, having healthy relationships with our kids plays a big part in our overall health. I have found, in my 17 years as a mom so far, that being present with my kids really helps foster a healthy dynamic in our relationship. When you are present with someone, it speaks to how much you value them.

When your relationships are healthy and positive, especially inside the home - it reduces your stress and increases your joy. Both of which are great for your wellbeing.

Erica, creative genius on family systems and creating moments of presence, joins me on this episode to share about:

  • Planning: Intentionally schedule time to be present with your family
  • Solid routines: Automate parts of your day to free up mental energy for being present
  • No-tech time: Set aside dedicated periods without technology to focus on your family
  • Clearing out clutter and distractions: Create a calm and clutter-free environment to enhance presence.
  • Letting go of perfection: Release the pressure to be perfect and focus on what truly matters

There is a lot of confusion in the world about healthy fats. What are the healthy fats? Why do we need them? Why are so many people getting essential fatty acids wrong?

We answer all that and more in this engaging episode with Udo Erasmus.

  • Udo got interested in healthy oils and fats after being poisoned by pesticides and realizing the importance of nutrition for healing and health.
  • The body is constantly rebuilding itself, and the quality of the food, water, and air we consume plays a crucial role in this process.
  • Essential fatty acids, including Omega-3 and Omega-6, are vital for health and cannot be produced by the body. They must be obtained from outside sources.
  • The processing of oils by the industry, including the use of corrosive chemicals and high heat, damages the oils and creates toxic molecules that the body cannot break down.
  • Using damaged oils, especially for frying, can lead to health problems and interfere with normal bodily functions.
  • The balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6 is important, and both types of fatty acids should be obtained from sources made with health in mind.
  • Oils made with health in mind should be used in food after cooking, not for frying, and should be protected from light, oxygen, and heat to retain their health benefits.
  • The fear of fats in the past was misguided, and fats are essential for various bodily functions, including brain health and energy production.
  • Udo has online resources and courses available on his website, including information on fats and digestive health. Udo's products, including oils, digestive enzymes, probiotics, and greens, can be found on his website.

I don’t know about you guys. But sometimes mom life feels really lonely. And then throw in a more natural minded lifestyle, and it can feel even more isolating.

With mother’s day approaching, I wanted to invite Sara Jean on the podcast as a fellow holistic mama to have a Daily Wellness mom chat about all things healthy living.

I want you to know that even when you feel alone on your health journey, you’re really not! There are plenty of us mamas out here - trying to learn and grow and do better when we know better.

Sara Jean and I talk about some of the struggles that this lifestyle brings, but also what motivates us to keep going.

In this episode, you’ll hear what our health priorities are, what we hope to teach our kids, how we make choices and the wisdom in taking baby steps!

If you’re catching this on release day, Happy Mother’s Day to all our Daily Wellness mamas!

At least 35% of children are overweight or obese, the number has more than tripled since the 1970s.

Autism prevalence has gone up 317% since 2000.

At least 10% of kids in the US have been diagnosed with ADHD, and another 10% have anxiety.

Rates of kids with life-threatening allergies, asthma and even childhood cancer are all rising.

Health statistics for our kids aren’t moving in the right direction.

I’m guessing that no parent listening would want their kid to be a part of one of these statistics, but what are we doing to ensure that?

Today, pediatrician Dr. Joel Warsh, known as Dr. Gator joins me on the show for a chat about what our role as parents is in the midst of these health challenges for our kids.

He’ll share tips for raising healthy kids, dietary recommendations and some encouragement for parents who might be feeling overwhelmed by all this!

I share four ways you can teach your kids about healthy food in this episode.

I love it when parents ask me about that, because it means that they are not just interested in feeding their kids healthy food but in teaching them the WHY behind it! And if we can teach our kids about what foods are healthy, how to shop for them and the benefits of them, they are much more likely to continue eating healthy food when they leave our home.

The four ideas I share have to do with:

Helping them understand the foods that God made and the foods that man made.

Connecting your kids to where their food comes from.

  • Taking them to the store with you and teaching them specific things there.
  • Teaching them about the benefits of healthy food.

Some strategies are more applicable to kids at certain ages, and I talk through that as well.

If you love the episode, please take a minute to leave us a rating and review if applicable, we appreciate it!

On this educational episode, Gretch from @nevertox helps us understand the risks associated with Botox. With the percentage of women receiving Botox injections on a normal basis increasing rapidly, we all need to think about this very intentionally so we can make informed choices.

She explains the history of Botox, what it is and all the uses for it. We talk about the warnings that are on the box and how the warnings given to patients are often woefully inadequate.

She also explains how someone can be injured (FYI - it can be a single exposure) and what the wide variety of symptoms from Botox injury can be. Gretch believes that there is no safe amount of Botox.

She works with a support group of 36,000 individuals injured by Botox, but this is still a very small percentage of the people who have suffered negative impacts.

Lastly, we discuss resources for those who are dealing with a Botox injury.

As women, this is something we need to be very educated about! So, after you listen. Please share this episode and the resources below with those you love!

This episode covers the 10 factors that Dr. Kelly Turner uncovered and shared in her book “Radical Remission” after interviewing over 1500 cancer survivors who had been sent home on hospice but then recovered. Radical Remission coach, Liz Curran, takes us through the 10 factors that all these cancer survivors had in common. Only 3 are physical!

If you have a cancer diagnosis, know someone who does or you would like to try your best to prevent cancer, you will want to hear these factors for yourself.

With 1 in 8 people receiving a diagnosis of cancer in the USA, this is incredibly relevant to all of us. And I’m telling you, the stories of these cancer survivors are amazing! Highly recommend you check out the books and other resources (all here for you in the show notes).

Social media bombards women with messages of what they “need”. Especially when it comes to our health and wellness. So, I wanted to bring some clarity to some of the confusion around the nutrients that every woman needs. Chelsie Moore, Functional Nutritionist, does just that.

We chat about how the typical American diet and a woman's lifestyle affect their health.

And then Chelsie gives us some insight on what women tend to be deficient in and what those nutrition needs are that are specific to women. I love how much we talk about real, nutrient dense foods and how to build your plate for maximum health!

Values for raising healthy kids. Learning a natural approach to childhood illnesses. These are a couple of my favorite topics covered in this podcast episode!

Here are some specific topics:

  • With all her wisdom on both natural and conventional medicine, Dr. Mayer shares her own family values for health and wellness. And you might find some of them surprising like I did!
  • Various childhood health struggles like ear infections and fever, and how she would approach that with a naturopathic mindset. I loved her advice on what to do first!
  • I really appreciated our discussion on “pro informed consent” and “pro medical freedom”, especially when it comes to vaccines. It was great to hear how she explains that to patients and why some doctor offices can be so difficult to work with.
  • Don’t you want to know what you should be asking when you are trying to decide what your approach to vaccines will be? This conversation will help you sort through your approach.

Are yearly wellness visits necessary? What should you be requesting if you go?

Dr. Forrest Sauer, gives us some insight from his experience in functional medicine.

In this episode, we talk about whether or not annual checkups are necessary or helpful, and what he suggests doing for an annual exam (including recommended lab tests) if you are truly seeking health and wellness.

If you are going to “wellness visits” with your current doctor, you really need to listen in to understand why conventional doctors do visits the way that they do now, so you can advocate for yourself.

He gives us some great insight on what we may need to look out for in our own health from what he is commonly seeing in his patients. And I loved his examples of how he has helped specific patients get to the root cause of their health problems.

What we discuss in this episode:

Brooke’s medical mystery saga that led her to see 50 doctors in 5 years.

At the end of seeking help from modern medicine, she was told to manage her pain.

She rejected that and took her health into her own hands.

She shares what practitioners actually helped her, what some of those practitioners specialize in and how she chose her next step in her healing journey along the way.

This led to her co-founding her own company, Gold Ivy Health Co.

With her newly regained health, she is now all about adding value to others with the wisdom she has gained about healing and wellness.

Looking back, she can see what the root causes of her illness were: mainly stress that had ruined her gut health.

Tests showed that she had parasites, an overload of bad bacteria, yeast overgrowth, infections, SIBO and mold toxicity.

Other than finding the right practitioners, mindset and a support system were a big part of Brooke’s healing journey.

Finally, we specifically discuss the connection between mental health and physical health, the mind-body connection. She shares several brilliant and practical things that she did to heal from anxiety and depression.

Dropping a very timely episode today with so many great strategies and tips for you to be able to make it through the holidays while prioritizing your health. As we head into a busy season, imagine getting to January 2 and feeling energized, proud of yourself, on track with your goals and ready to take on a new year!

Molly Brown, personal trainer, certified nutritionist and dietary supplement professional, joins me on this episode to help us think through how to be health-smart through this season.

It’s all completely possible when you adopt/keep some healthy, practical habits through the holiday season, such as:

  1. Prioritizing a nutritious, low sugar breakfast to start your day off right.
  2. Eating mindfully at holiday parties (how you approach sweets or fill your plate).
  3. Intentional approach to your calendar to avoid a lot of stress.
  4. Go for a walk after meals.
  5. Try to move a little every day - even if it’s for a short time.
  6. Continually over indulging, avoiding exercise, suppressing your immune system and putting yourself under a lot of stress is a recipe for regret.

The tips in this episode can help you end the winter holidays feeling great!

Recommendations Molly Brown mentioned:

  • Book: Dirty Genes by Ben Lynch
  • Sara Poff’s website
  • Dr. Jason Pickel youtube channel

All things babies! This is your chance to hear from a health expert on topics like infertility, healthy pregnancies, postpartum challenges, unexpected pregnancies and high-needs children.

Starting with emotional stories of Dr. McCauley’s legacy and her emotional journey through infertility, this episode really digs deep into all things women’s health through pregnancy and postpartum.

We discuss the emotional impacts of infertility and some common factors that are often overlooked for mom AND dad, such as diet, work environment and exposure to harmful chemicals.

Next, we discuss important things to consider for a healthy pregnancy and Dr. McCauley focuses us in on lifestyle factors. Pregnant moms need to be mindful of what they eat and drink, of course, but also what they take into their body through their environment. Remember to focus on gratitude and peace! And don’t neglect chiropractic care.

As you approach time for labor and delivery, Dr. Nicole shares some great tips to help that go as smoothly as possible, and encourages mamas to know their negotiables and non-negotiables ahead of time. Be sure to communicate those things with your birth partners and care team.

Then what about care for mamas after delivery? Dr. McCauley shares very passionately about meeting the needs of moms post-partum in that “fourth trimester”. Moms not only have physical needs and healing to go through, but also psychological, mental and emotional needs. We chat about ways to help well in this season.

Recommendations from Dr. McCauley

  • Taking Charge of Your Fertility, book by Toni Weschler
  • The Schaefer Protocol - Creating Healthy Humans
  • Dynamic Strides - in Springfield, MO
  • Your Circle - Pathways Connect Facebook Group
  • Find a Doctor - find a chiropractor who specializes in the Webster Technique

Menopause has a lot of stigma around it, being known for hot flashes, mood swings, and weight gain. But does it have to be that way?

Zora Benhamou joins for this episode. As a gerontologist, biohacker and health coach, she brings a hopeful perspective on all things menopause. Including how to be prepared for it if you’re not there.

We will get a definition of premature menopause, early onset menopause, pre-menopause, perimenopause, menopause, and post menopause.

Her description of what to look for in each stage is very helpful. The typical signs and symptoms can often be unwanted or uncomfortable, such as insulin resistance, weight gain, saggy skin, depression, moodiness, anxiety, wrinkles, harder to build muscle, brain fog, and vaginal dryness.

After Zora explains why this is happening, I ask her to help us understand some biohacking tools that would be helpful for women in various menopause stages.

Did you know that every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. And that 1 in every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Overall, the rate for cancer in women is 1 in 3, with breast cancer being the biggest offender.

Breast cancer is not a stranger to any of us. If you have been fortunate enough to not have it yourself, you know someone who has been diagnosed with it.

So, what do we do? That’s the question isn’t it? Because all we really hear about it is: wear a pink ribbon in October and get your yearly mammogram.

Sorry, but neither of those things will keep you from getting breast cancer.

You need a plan. A plan to help prevent breast cancer. And that’s what this week’s episode is all about. I will tell you about my breast health plan, something that involves prevention 365 days a year. You will get some great ideas on what you can implement in your own life to lower your risk factors and help make your body more resistant to disease, including breast cancer.

Different screening options, nutrition, harmful chemicals and stress management are just a few of the things discussed.

This episode covers three trending health topics. Ryan (the hubs) joins for a discussion about Ozempic, Apeel and Cancer Awareness Months.

Ozempic is a pharmaceutical drug that was originally created to treat type 2 diabetes, but is now being used as a weight loss drug. We chat about how it works and reasons to be cautious about taking it.

Apeel is a coating that is now being sprayed on fruits and vegetables, it’s already in your supermarkets. We will tell you what it is, what it’s made of and how to avoid it if you decide you’d like to.

Cancer awareness months are complicated. While I (Melisha) know we desperately need more awareness about cancer. I am really annoyed at the mindset that these “months” have created in us and the questionable goals of them.

Listen in and see if you learn something new!

We’d love to hear from you, too. Email: melisha@dailywellnesscommunity.com

We’re going to talk about 3 things in this episode that are easily misdiagnosed and when they are diagnosed, typical treatment options aren’t very promising.

I am quite sure that everyone listening knows someone affected by one of these diagnoses and I’m hoping that you will listen with that person in mind and share this episode with them.

Because there is indeed hope for Lyme Disease, Autism Spectrum Disorder and PANS/PANDAS.

Dr. Lindsey Wells is a Naturopathic Doctor from Connecticut that actually specializes in treating patients that have these struggles and has seen amazing, positive outcomes in her patients.

She truly believes that treating children and their families with naturopathic medicine leads to healthier individuals and stronger family units.

Christine Muldoon is a mama and Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, seeing clients both virtually and in person. She is also co-host of Modern Ancestral Mamas Podcast!

At Nourish the Littles, her work focuses on teaching parents how to support their child’s health through ancestral nutrition.

We have such a helpful conversation on this episode!

Christine follows the ancestral food guidelines found in the book, “Nourishing Traditions”. She talks about how she came to the conclusion in her journey that ancestral foods were the common sense approach to food. Ancestral foods look quite different than the standard American diet (SAD). But as you all know, the SAD hasn’t done us any favors and Americans are sicker than ever.

So as you hear about these sacred, ancestral foods and imagine incorporating them into your home, remember that to change the trajectory of your family’s health, you will have to do something very DIFFERENT than the SAD.

I, personally, incorporate many of these foods into my family’s diet and it’s been a journey that’s taken time and patience. I mean, your family is not going to clap for you the first time you put organ meats on the table!

Christine gives us some great encouragement and tips for incorporating these ancestral foods into our family’s diet.

If you’re ready to think about nutrient-dense eating as a family, you’re in for a treat!

I start this interview by having Dr. Lawrence Palevsky tell us his story of how he “switched” to a holistic approach to pediatrics. His story is amazing! What a journey!

Dr. Lawrence Palevsky is a holistic pediatrician who has been practicing for more than 20 years, a diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, and Past-President of the American Holistic Medical Association. While continuing in his pediatric practice, he also teaches holistic integrative pediatric & adolescent medicine to parents, and medical and allied health professionals, both nationally & internationally.

His curious and investigative approach to medicine is so refreshing.

You’ll walk away with a new understanding of:

  • Symptoms

  • Pharmaceuticals

  • Nutrition

  • Choosing a healthcare team

  • Vacc1nes

I really appreciated his humility, willingness to share and talk about “hard topics”.

Personally, I walked away with a desire to learn more about several topics! I think you will, too!

Resources for further study mentioned by Dr. Palevsky:

  • “Dissolving Illusions” by Dr. Susan Humphries

  • National Vaccine Information Center - NVIC.org

  • Dr. Joseph Mercola website

  • Green Med Info website

This episode is all about thermography! And, as my guest, I have Level 2 Certified Clinical Thermographer, Libby Ray, who has been a thermographer for 15 years! She has seen thousands of images from all ages of people.

If you’ve been considering thermography as a tool for screening (could be for cancer, could also be for inflammation, blocked lymph, infections, etc.) this episode will really help clarify what thermography is, the benefits, how an appointment goes and how you get results.

One of my favorite quotes from the episode:

“It can show us things 8-10 years ahead of a mammogram.

It takes about 8 years, if you have a cancer in your breast, to grow large enough to be seen by a mammogram.

At 8 years, you have over 4 billion cancer cells.

Our goal is to look at things much sooner, with much earlier detection.”

Todd Marchant joins for this episode. He is the founder of Be Whole. Do Good., a community that encourages whole person well being through a podcast and online courses.

A lightbulb moment in their lives gave them clarity that the path they were on in life wasn’t what they wanted life to be.

There were some big changes in their lives to get them to the much healthier place where they are today, like entrepreneurship. But Todd shares how the little changes they’ve made along the way were what has made the most difference. The little changes made it possible to make the big changes. The little things were being learners, practicing mindfulness and bringing enthusiasm to life.

We talk a lot about how the physical, mental, emotional parts of our bodies are so interconnected. And I love how Todd and his wife are bringing awareness to all those things into their family culture, and helping other families do the same.

You’ll love hearing the specific tips he shares for bringing this whole-person focus into your family culture.

Kayla Mangione of the @thefamilyfoodproject is our guest today!

In early adulthood, Kayla started to develop some health symptoms that led her to a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease. She was given the option to take pharmaceuticals as a treatment option, but because she was so young she knew she didn’t want to be on medicine the rest of her life. So she set out to heal her body naturally, mainly through food.

Crohn’s disease is an auto-immune that creates a lot of painful inflammation in your bowel.

She is off all her medication and in remission!

We also get to talk about how this journey has affected her whole family, their healthy family culture and her perspective on autoimmune diseases.

With a background as a marriage and family therapist and art therapist, she has built a lot of therapeutic wisdom into her relationship with food and how she teaches her kids about health eating.

You’ll love Kayla’s tips for helping kids become adventurous eaters!

Conversation with Dr. Caleb Guernsey.

Chiropractic care as well as sports injury care for 14 years, with almost 11,000 patients.

Specializing in the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems.

The first part of our conversation we spent on the “main thing” - what is the main thing that contributes to life-long health?

Here are a few of his thoughts:

As a physician, I’m always making observations and there are things that become very obvious.

The most obvious problem that we have is that we allow our bodies to go dormant.

Our bodies aren’t built to not be used.

There is no such thing as living longer by not using your body.

The main issue I see is weakness, underuse and over-protection of your body and that central problem bleeds out into other issues.

If there was one order I could give to every patient - it would be to do more with your body.

The second part of our conversation, I asked questions about some serious issues in men’s health like the rapid decline of testosterone.

The testosterone issue specifically is not being talked about enough.

Testosterone levels are very important in men for them to age well, but it also affects energy level, sex drive, mental clarity and more.

We talked about reasons and solutions for overall health and for men’s health.

Conversation with Dr. Wendi Davis, ND.

Estimates at least 80% of her clients have sleep trouble.

Why is sleep so important? You can’t be truly healthy if you’re not sleeping well.

Sleep is when our brain detoxes, our body recovers, it helps regulate mood, hormones and metabolism.

Sleep deprivation causes magnesium deficiency, brain fog, lack of focus, lack of energy, poor diet, mental health problems, and just affects every area of life.

Causes of sleep deprivation: stress - high cortisol levels decreases melatonin production. Pain - from autoimmune issues or otherwise, chronic pain can’t sleep well. Diet - not eating the right foods, not regulating blood sugar. Hormones - perimenopause or menopause (progesterone helps us produce GABA which helps us fall asleep.)

One sleep remedy isn’t going to work for everyone.

Exercise - be careful of the type of exercise and when you exercise.

Diet - food is medicine or a slow form of poison. The biggest thing is sugar. It is poison, kryptonite. At every meal, have good protein and fat to keep your blood sugar stable and get the nutrients you need.

The body is one unit, start to put things together and things fall into place. Diet is the foundation.

The connection between sleep and mental health.

I wish there was more investigation when people have sleep problems, finding the root cause and finding what’s not working. (Me: Yes! Yes! Yes!)

Recommends 7-9 hours for adults.

Advice for those struggling:

Focus on your sleep routine, get into bed earlier!

Limit blue light before bed, instead have warm, low light to get your body producing melatonin.

Diet: what are you eating on a regular basis? do you need a snack before bed or not?

Exercise - try to move it earlier in your day so it’s not right before bed

Deep breathing/meditation/prayer, to bring cortisol down

Supplementation - magnesium glycinate, melatonin, herbal teas, essential oils

Pay attention to your exposure to emfs

Get help! If you are still struggling with sleep after trying a few things. Find a practitioner that will help you find out why!

Gut health - you are what you eat, but you are what you eat and absorb. If your gut health is off, then that can definitely affect your sleep. (Seratonin and melatonin production.)

CBD good for sleep? Medicinal use of cannabis for sleep can be great for some people. Some need to be careful using it long term.

You are going to be riveted by Sonia Jhas’ story.

Sonia is the author of “I’ll Start Again Tomorrow, and Other Lies I’ve Told Myself”, a mindset and wellness expert, and personal trainer. She’s also authentic and wise.

For a long time in her life, she was seeking health, wellness and happiness in all the wrong places: achieving goals, pursuing the wrong career, eating disorders, weight loss, and pure determination.

We have an incredible conversation about the wearisome cycle of reaching for the perfect body and then falling “off the wagon” so to speak, feeling terrible about it yet repeating that cycle over and over again.

She says that even from a young age, she didn’t feel good in her own skin, and the first pain point she needed to solve was the relationship with her own body.

What followed was an un-peeling of layers in her mindset, her goals and her lifestyle. There was no quick fix. She abandoned what she knew about fitness and nutrition and started over.

I love that she talked about “abandoning the timeline” for her goals. Instead, she started paying attention to how she felt about every aspect about her health routines, and she got really clear about what she wanted. Those mindset shifts started to make all the difference and paved the way for her to be able to start making aligned decisions and truly change her life.

Lastly, Sonia and I talk about body image. Such an important topic.

I really loved her perspective on this - she gave us some great tips on tuning into our bodies, honoring the mind-body connection and fueling a narrative about ourselves that is about “capacity and potential.”

In 2021, over 81 million in the US were diagnosed with seasonal allergies.

Approximately 26% of adults and 19% of children.

The global Nasal Antihistamines Market was projected to total US$ 1.9 billion in 2021 (prnewswire.com)

In 2017, Claritin and Zyrtec sold almost $600 million in tablets.

The question I’m asking is why?

Environmental allergies develop when the body's immune system recognizes and overreacts to things like pollens, dust, animal dander or mold; things that typically don't cause a reaction in most people.

It’s spring when I recorded this - so many people were suffering from symptoms due to allergies. It’s affecting quality of life.

So, today we talk about some things you can do to get some quick relief from those symptoms. Some are simple new habits you can pick up to keep the allergens out of your home. Some are products that you may find helpful.

BUT we are also going to think about long term solutions. I share about my son’s journey with allergies, too. He used to have year-round allergy symptoms. But now he doesn’t.

After treating his body for Lyme disease, his allergies also went away.

Whether or not allergies can be healed is debated. But you’ll hear our story and how gut and immune system support made a WORLD of difference for our son.

We covered so much good stuff in this episode!

I loved that we started with a conversation about pursuing progress and not perfection, having grace with ourselves as we strive to better our lives and homes.

Shawna shared her story with us. She had some very serious health issues to the point that she almost lost her life. She wasn’t getting the answers she needed. She wasn’t getting better.

So, she started learning on her own - about how to change her health and get her life back on track. For her, the healing journey began by doing an elimination diet (The Virgin Diet), and then, over time, she over-hauled her home from toxins as well.

I loved how she shared about the mindset change she went through as well. She wasn’t interested in going back to her previous lifestyle because the changes improved her life so much.

She describes herself as being “radically changed” by the healthy changes she was making! She was so impacted that she couldn’t help but start sharing this life-changing information with others.

Shawna has two kiddos and it’s a joy to see her bringing them along with her in this health journey, making it just a normal part of their life to pursue health. She has a good balanced approach of making them aware and educated about toxins without living in fear of those things. Talking about things as they are happening, doing check-ins after eating out, and thinking about it as our job to steward our family’s health.

I asked Shawna about how she handles “push back” in her life with people that don’t agree with her lifestyle or don’t understand it. She said, “I’m not trying to tell anyone else how to live. I’m sharing how I live in case it’s helpful to someone else.”

As far as HOW to remove toxins from our home, she shared about the ALLT Method.

  • A - Assess, what can I minimize?
  • L - Let go, get rid of things you don’t use. (Reduce clutter and chemicals.)
  • L - Level up, when you run low on a product start looking for a healthier alternative.
  • T - Time, continue to do these steps

Stay within your emotional, financial and mental capacities!

Start in one area (think small), start in the areas that have things you use daily.

Every small change adds up to a big difference in your life!

We talk about how to choose new products, how to do it in a way that is within your budget and how to do all of this without adding stress to our lives.

Chiropractic care helps with neck and back pain for sure - but it also helps with a wider range of mobility issues, boosts the immune system, improves cellular health and so much more! Now I get regular adjustments even if I’m not in significant pain and I take my kids too - because I know how good it is for me and my family.

Dr. Chris Banks, from southwest MO, has over 15 years of experience in this field. He and his wife Jenn are raising two wonderful boys - Barrett and Canon.

He started Midwestern Built Chiropractic in 2018. This business is currently called Midwestern Built Health as they offer physical therapy and nutrition services as well. Chris and Jenn are partners in the Midwestern Built CrossFit gyms in Joplin, MO, Carthage, MO, and Bentonville, AR.

In our conversation - we cover topics such as:

  • What chiropractic care is and is not.
  • The different approaches to care.
  • What the common and uncommon benefits of chiro care are.
  • The connection between chiropractic care and the nervous system.
  • Tips for those of us that sit at a desk most hours of the day.
  • What to expect on a visit to a chiropractor.
  • What to do if you have some fear about trying an appointment for the first time.
  • What to look for in a chiropractic doctor.

“Health is not the absence of things but the ability of your body to function as it was designed to.”

Have your grocery costs doubled? Do you want to buy more organic food but can’t afford it or maybe don’t even have access to it?

One easy solution to both of these is to start a small home garden. Gardening gives us affordable access to nutrient dense foods, but also has many other benefits. It gets you outside in the sun, it gets you in the immune boosting soil, it provides stress relief and helps us stay physically active.

Research from the Journal of Environmental Horticulture found that those who garden have reduced stress, anxiety and depression. I knew there was something magical about gardening!

So today, I invited Patty Ward to come and share some gardening tips with us. Her and her husband have more than 30 years of gardening experience and now own a wonderful heirloom seed business called Sow Right Seeds.

From her wealth of knowledge, she’s sharing top tips for beginner gardeners!

Some of the tips:

  1. Start by growing what you love
  2. Start small, 3-5 varieties
  3. Good soil
  4. Good light
  5. Watering well

And lots of other helpful things like choosing the perfect garden spot, how to start seeds, the learning curve and how to know what your seeds need and so much more!

Some resources Patty recommended:

  • The Planters Library on their website
  • Find your local extension office - for info on gardening and soil in your area
  • Epic Gardening on YouTube

As parents we can all agree on a few things.

  1. That we want our kids to be healthy and happy.
  2. That eating nutritious food is an important part of being healthy.
  3. That putting kids and healthy food together can be difficult!

In this episode we are going to talk about why helping our kids eat healthy food, even though it can be difficult, is important, is worth doing, and in fact can be done. Ryan takes the lead to interview me and asks me:

  • Why is it important for kids to eat healthy food?
  • How early should you start?
  • How would you start doing this with kids who aren’t used to it?
  • How would you handle “picky eaters”?
  • How do you handle it when you are at a restaurant, event, or someone else’s home?
  • What would you say to someone who feels overwhelmed?

Our journey to a whole-food diet wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.  Just wait - you’ll hear some stories!

I know I can’t control what choices my kids will make when they are no longer with me.  But I know that they have the knowledge, the skills and the experience they need to make healthy choices if they want to. I also can’t entirely control my kids’ health outcomes.  But I want to be able to say that I did my very best with the knowledge that I had.

In this episode we are sharing how we help our kids eat healthy food.

Has the thought ever crossed your mind that being healthy is expensive? I love all things healthy food, and sometimes healthy food items can be pricey. Seeing alternative providers and getting the testing that you want is often an “out of pocket” expense. And then there’s all the supplements - those can cost a pretty penny for sure!

To be transparent, I have spent money on all those things and I’ll continue to as I can. But as a mom of four - I’ve also had to get creative on pursuing health without breaking the bank.

Sometimes we see all the health things out there being sold and we think that being healthy requires us to buy all those things.

What if I were to share some things with you that can have a profound impact on your health - that cost you absolutely nothing?

Thinking you have to have a big pile of money to be healthy is a myth! While things that cost money can certainly be helpful, there are so many health-building things you can do that cost absolutely nothing! Don’t let a lack of finances keep you from pursuing wellness.

Listen for the details on these in the episode!

10 FREE things you can do today to improve your health.

  1. Go for a walk.
  2. Eat a variety of foods.
  3. Drink more water.

Hormone health coach, Kait Entsminger, graciously opens up about some hormone health struggles that she went through in her postpartum journey. She had postpartum anxiety with her son in 2018 that put her into a horrible bout of vertigo. Kait says, “I had to heal my hormones because I literally couldn’t take care of my family, it was so bad. I was not myself.”

Hormone issues are everywhere, but often people don’t make the connection that their health problems are stemming from hormone disruption and imbalances.

I share how I have friends struggling with PCOS, infertility, weight gain, irregular and painful periods, anger, depression, cancer, anxiety, daughters with early puberty, stress, low libido, changing metabolism… It’s just everywhere!

I ask Kait why she thinks so many are struggling with hormone issues?

And we talk about how modern society has introduced us to things we didn’t have years ago: such as processed foods, toxins in our air, pharmaceuticals in our water and chemicals in our personal care products. And for women, the modern lifestyle is not built to support a woman’s hormone cycle.

We have a great conversation about connecting the dots between health problems and hormones. Typically each “issue” is addressed as an isolated thing, not connected to hormone imbalance and all the systems of the body. Our body is made up of connected systems!

We end discussing steps that someone can take to start balancing their hormones:

  • Addressing nutrition - track protein and cholesterol (hormones are made up of cholesterol)
  • Get testing - thyroid panel, hair/tissue/mineral analysis test, Dutch hormone panel
  • Be mindful of circadian rhythms - limit blue light, especially early morning and before bed; get out in the sun
  • Take it one step at a time, one decision at a time.

In today’s episode we go into detail on what integrative dentistry is and the benefits of it compared to modern dentistry.

Integrative dentistry is focused on the mouth-body connection and the overall well-being of the patient. There is an emphasis on prevention, healthy habits, less invasive procedures, internal health of the teeth and nutrition.

He explains how he can tell a lot about a person’s health by looking at their teeth and gums. Fascinating stuff!

I talk about how my eyes were opened to the fact that for years - because of the way things work - I have thought of dental health as a thing separate from the rest of my body. We have separate dental insurance, dental hygiene products, different doctors for our teeth and the dentists themselves are taught to think this way in their training.

We also talk about some other ways modern dentistry has gone wrong. For example - the use of mercury and BPA in fillings, and overuse of root canals and fluoride.

Dr. Roberts gives us some great advice on nutrition for good oral health and great recommendations for learning more! Enjoy!

Through multiple, varying and persistent health struggles of her own, Lianna Souder has found her passion in helping others avoid and prevent as many health issues as possible.

From parasites to PCOS, from brain injuries to birth control complications, from a miscarriage to medication for IBS… she has really been through so much more than seems fair for one person.

And on top of all that, she would cycle through seasons of feeling well and then symptoms flaring back up due to many different stress factors. At one point, she was working 3 jobs with crazy hours, doing intense workouts and not getting enough sleep. If nothing else, I bet you can relate to stress being a constant problem in your life, I know that I can.

As you take a listen, you’ll hear Lianna and I dig into her process for de-stressing her life! Eliminating stressors, getting more sleep, fueling her body with nutrients and supporting her adrenals were all essential to her healing.

We have an important discussion on the impact of medications (pharmaceuticals) on your gut health. Specifically, we talked about the negative impacts of birth control on the female body. Did you know that it depletes key nutrients in the body, disrupts hormones and is a group 1 carcinogen?

Getting to the root of her health problems has been a long process for Lianna. She has learned that our bodies are designed to heal but it takes time, and EVERYTHING in our bodies is connected. We don’t have to be a victim to the “gene pool” we were assigned, by making healthy lifestyle choices we can positively affect the outcome of our health.

So. Much. Goodness. In this episode.

Dr. Jay Goodbinder is the guest for this episode. He is a doctor of chiropractic and naturopathic medicine, as well as the owner of the Epigenetics Healing Center in Kansas City, MO.

His journey into health and wellness began in his twenties when he went looking for a way to heal his body of psoriatic arthritis. He tells a part of that story like this, “I had a doctor tell me: ‘I’m sorry, it’s genetic. You’ll learn how to live with it.’ Well, I didn’t want to live at all anymore.”

Not ok with being on medication the rest of his life either, he wanted to figure out how to heal his body. And he did. And that eventually led him to where he is today, helping others reverse disease and find healing.

He says the first two steps to healing are changing your diet and good testing to see what’s going on in the body. As he says, “95% is not putting poison in your body.”

We went into a lot of detail about gut healing. We talked about what gut health is, how you pursue it and what some of the common barriers to getting your gut health in a good place would be. Some of those barriers you may not have considered before like having been born not through the birth canal (non vaginal), pharmaceuticals like birth control, mold and high lectin diet. Listen for the full discussion - I know you’ll love learning about it!

In summary, Dr. Goodbinder’s keys to starting your health journey would be: no processed food, testing, good sleep, clean water, moving and taking supplements like fish oil, vitamin D and probiotics.

There are two realizations I hope you walk away with after listening to today’s episode.

  1. A healthy hormone system is vital to your overall health.
  2. The toxins in common personal care products can negatively impact your hormone system.

Today, Stephanie Greenwood is our podcast guest. Stephanie is the owner of Bubble and Bee Organics, a company with clean-ingredient personal care products. She created this company due to her own struggle with hormone issues and realizing that the products she used to use were making her health worse. Specifically, she was diagnosed with PCOS and Adenomyosis.

She followed her instincts to get to the root of her health issues and learned a lot!

One of her discoveries was that the personal care products she was using were making her health worse. She learned about xenoestrogens and how they disrupt the hormone system. (You’ll want to take notes as she discusses some ingredients to avoid!)

From a lonely journey of struggling with her health through her twenties, to now being a new mom at 42 with a thriving business - Stephanie’s story is an inspiration.
