Chelsea sits down with stage director Tim Seib to talk about what happens on the other side of the table... and we think we may have solved the "too much material for a self tape" problem once and for all!!!
Tim is a longtime director at Theatre Raleigh, where he has helmed productions including The Prom, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, Fun Home, Once, and The Secret Garden, among many others. He also directed the national tour of Million Dollar Quartet.
He has worked with companies across the country including The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis, Casa Mañana, La Mirada Theatre, and Arrow Rock Lyceum, and has been deeply involved in the development of new shows.
Chelsea and Tim recorded this conversation just before rehearsals began for Come From Away at Theatre Raleigh, where Tim is directing and Chelsea is onstage as Diane (and others!).
They discuss what directors are actually watching for in the room — and why the smallest interactions can sometimes say the most.

Of all the musicals currently running on Broadway, all but 3 are firmly under the genre umbrella of Pop/Rock or are significantly influenced by pop/rock music. And that trend is felt in regional theaters and beyond. What does that mean for you? 80-90% of your auditions may be asking for a pop/rock song and you need to be ready!

If you're pursuing a performance degree, you may be wondering, "What else can I do with this degree?" It turns out, a lot more than you think! Today, we've brought to the podcast our friend Hannah Flam, a New York City-based performer and project manager. Hannah received her BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Michigan and now works as a digital marketing project manager for the Department of Neurosurgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. When Hannah took a break from performing to recover from an injury, she discovered new ways to use her creative skills in a field she never would've expected--healthcare administration!
We talked to Hannah about all the different ways she uses what she learned from her theatre degree, the pros and cons of having a full time job outside of performing, and how she's been able to reclaim her love of performing on her own terms after recovering from what could've been a career-ending injury. In this solo episode, Cynthia dives into a topic familiar to actors but often overlooked: the "moment before". Despite its importance, Cynthia finds that many actors need constant reminders about this crucial aspect of performance. One of the main jobs of actors is to create a believable and compelling story and to clearly communicate that story. Musical theatre is defined by the storytelling! Shina auditioned eight times for what would become her Broadway debut, the 2009 revival of West Side Story. Since then she's gone on to perform in a total of eight (soon to be nine!) Broadway shows, as she's currently in rehearsals for the revival of Spamalot. As a consummate triple threat, Shina knows what it's like to work hard as a performer. After 20 years in the industry, this is what Gavin Creel finally starting saying to himself.
"I spent a lot more time getting my value and my worth from outside forces. But the pandemic took that away. There were no outside forces. There was no applause. There was no positive feedback loop."
