Charlie Golightly (they/them) is a person I've done a LOT of podcasts with, and this one might be my new favorite. We're talking about our current metaphysical explorations, spandakarika, career changing, mind changing, being brats about job searching, and learning tarot cards. It's a LOT. We just, covered a lot. We hope there's something, or maybe many things, that feel true for you, too!

Go to the No One Talks About Substack page (noonetalksabout.substack.com) to chime in, and tell us about your metaphysical adventure, your humming, your euphoric moments, a time when you just knew you had to do a thing even if it didn't make a lot of sense to do it. We're here for all of it.

The first Women's sports bar, The Sports Bra, opened in Portland Oregon just a few years ago. Since then, a handful more have popped up in big cities around the U.S., but there isn't one in San Francisco...yet!

I know someone who is working on that, though. She's a journalist turned User Experience (UX) researcher, who was sold the Stability Myth and has kept a job as well as one can in the media and tech industries from the early 2000s through this year of our lady 2024. She's an avid sports watcher and fan, and kept thinking about a Women's sports bar in San Francisco, just assuming someone else was thinking about it, too!

Here we are, talking about what is either the beginning or somewhere toward the middle of her process, who's to say! We talk about career choice regrets, transitions, fundraising, finding a location, and what her inspired her to actually try to do this pretty Big Thing.

We also talk about Board Game Enthusiasts. Stick around and find out.

Morgan Sinclair is here to hype you up to start your LLC...if you want that! She's also talking about knowing her menstrual phase cycles and how that impacts her creativity, which is important in a design-focused business. We explore the pitfalls of monetizing (too many) hobbies, and realizing we maybe want to switch things up. Then she shares a biege flag/calendar characteristic I've definitely never heard of before!

Morgan and her website design work can be found via MorganSinclair.com. Currently she's wrapping up her 2024 Italy Eating Expedition trip, but 2025 trips open for registration soon! And she's @MorganSinclair on IG.

Molly Bremer wanted to talk to about the grieving process of a big break up that also comes with a big (location) move. In her case, Vermont back to her lifelong home, Virginia (and the DC area). We talk about the break up, the moves, the personal realizations, and the processing of it all.

Molly had big ideas about finally leaving the DMV, moving to a new-to-her state, enjoying the wilderness and ski season that Vermont has to offer, and doing so with her now-ex partner (whom she met during the summer of 2020, an important detail!). Molly shares her story of realizing, in the gray Vermont stick season, that maybe this move, and this person, were not "it" for her. Then she needed a major surgery, which both clarified accelerated some decision making.

If any of this story, and these experiences of ego bruising, decision making, and time passing either way resonates with you and YOUR stories, join the conversation. Talk to us about it at NoOneTalksAbout.Substack.com (search the episode title, and leave a comment for us!).

"If you get stuck, get weird," was a piece of advice shared in Jami Attenburg's recent "1,000 words of summer" writing experience. I'm going with it.

This is a gentle re-entry into this space. I hope you'll stick with me, as we get unstuck, and head over to noonetalksabout.substack.com to finish the prompt. Let it be weird, or whatever it is that comes to mind for you.

We'll talk more, soon!

Well...this one really gets into it! Kelly Jones and I both have young kids, similar ages, and have experienced postpartum anxiety. We talk about what that felt like for us, why we chose to take medication, and how we navigated tough first years with our youngest kids. Kelly also shares her experience with getting her oldest into therapy—the barriers, the long wait lists, the validation from a great practitioner, and more.

"A lot of people think it’s just about sex...polyamorous people aren’t necessarily just having all this sex." We talked a little bit about polyamory in season 1 (episode 5), but this conversation explored a lot different aspects of the polyamorous relationship style. For example: Beth and her husband are married, and have been for about 11 years. They have kids together. And, they've been polyamorous for part, but not all, of that time.

If this is totally new to you, I hope you stay curious and open and appreciate Beth's honesty as much as I did! Not every relationship structure works for everyone, and this is what works for them.

If you have kids, how did you know when you were done? How did you know when you were ready in the first place? This conversation explores both of those big questions, and how the entire process triggers some of our deepest wounds, reminds us of some of our most formative experiences, along the way.

Dawn Lundin shares her experiences as a parent of three, a partner of 17 years (married at age 20, which wasn't totally the plan), and a person trying to relearn how to be in the driver's seat of her own mental health and wellbeing.

This is a conversation about exploring not just what you want but why you want it. About knowing that you’ll (probably) be OK, somehow, even if the stories don’t work out how you/we/they thought it might. About trusting that you’ll figure it out. About putting it all on the table, and seeing what you’d like to pick to put on your plate, for now. About giving yourself permission to change your mind. And about sleeping in your own damn room, if you want to.

P.S. Nicole wrote a book titled “How to be Alone”, and I can’t wait to read it!

Have you ever stepped onto an escalator going up, and then suddenly realized that -- for whatever reason -- you need to go back down? I have three little kids and we’ve traveled a lot, so my answer to that is yes. Airports are FULL of escalators.  And it’s kind of terrifying, because it’s actually really hard to go in the opposite direction of moving stairs. This is true both in real life, and metaphorically speaking. Which brings me to the topic of this episode...

Cara Harbstreet joined this episode to have a conversation about making the decision to not have kids, and feeling not only confident, but very content, in that space.

"If you aren’t centering your needs in your life, it’s not going to get easier...you’re only going to get more resentful."

We talk about this, and how exactly we are trying to meet our own needs, during the seasons of life that each of us (Mara Glatzel, and myself) are in.

This conversation felt part conversation-with-a-new-friend and part therapy, which is kind of the best, in my opinion. We get really honest about how we’re navigating this space of recognizing our needs, so that maybe things do feel a little easier, and we might be a little less resentful, and we might even bring big creative ideas to life....like this podcast, or in Mara’s case, her new book. Titled Needy. Available for presale at maraglatzel.com. (I ordered my copy! Go get yours.)

When does it get easier? And HOW could I make it easier, on myself? These are big questions that come to mind when I think about a lot of big life things, especially relationships, and parenting. Which is exactly what we’re diving into this season.

Season 2 will explore relationships, of many kinds, and parenting, or not parenting! Things to talk about, or not talk about. Because whoa are there so many things no one talks about when it comes to all of the above.

A catch-up call with a friend, for the pod!  Kim Hoban comes back to chat about what we're reading, listening to, consuming, writing, enjoying, cooking, and more. I should link all the things, but maybe we'll do that later.

Have you ever wondered how a host is really feeling about their podcast?! Maybe not, but we're GOING THERE anyway. This episode covers 5 prompts I gave myself to reflect on this first season of the show: What did I love about Season 1? What was really fun? What aspects of this didn't meet my expectations? What was NOT fun at all? And, a big one: What would be helpful in Season 2?

In this real talk recap episode, I (your host, Heather Caplan) get into the nitty gritty of how things are going behind-the-screens, behind-the-mic, and get honest about why there actaully aren't as many "Before We Hit Record" bonus episodes as there could have been!

I also share what's coming in Season 2, if you're into spoilers and stuff.

Thanks for being here!

Have you ever wondered if that person you know with a virtual business is actually “successful”...whatever that means? Have you ever calculated how much someone may or may not be making from their Patreon page...?

A few weeks ago I put up a poll on IG to gauge interest in some topics, one of them being “how successful is someone’s business, REALLY”. Because many of us who own online businesses ARE talking about our businesses online. Obviously. We have to! But if you’re anything like me, and Alissa Rumsey, who joined me for this conversation you have 1) wondered if someone’s business is as successful as it seems to be and 2) done that patreon calculating thing. Totally guilty of that.

This episode features Alissa Rumsey, dietitian and owner of a virtual private practice. Alissa's work and path through entrepreneurship has included a lot of different roles, skills, offers, and "success", along with many "failures". We talk about it all!

I know that talking about health insurance doesn’t seem as interesting as other topics we’ve covered, but hear me out: I learned some important things during this conversation! And I think you will, too!

Morgan Sinclair, a friend and fellow dietitian, wanted to have this conversation because when she was in the worst mental health space of her life to date--in a toxic job situation--the questions of how and where to get adequate health insurance fueled some anxiety about committing to being an entrepreneur full time. Morgan is a website designer and branding consultant for weight-inclusive business owners, the co-host of the Weight Inclusive Innovators podcast, and a multi-passionate business owner. You’ll find her work and her many business ventures on morgansinclairdesigns.com, and @morgansinclair on Instagram.

This episode explores the gray areas of infidelity—finding out, the betrayed and the betrayer, and in this case, finding a survival guide to figure it out together.

Kim Hoban shares her experiences with infidelity in the early stages of a relationship. As Kim shares toward the end of this conversation, she hopes that by telling this story, by talking about it openly and honestly in ways that feel safe and good to her, that she’s providing a gentle path for someone else to follow and navigate in their own way.

We also explore gender norms, performing socially-expected roles in relationships, emotional maturity, friendship, trust, therapy, couples therapy, and again, finding those gray areas instead of accepting binary thinking.

Resources mentioned: Esther Perel's work (Podcast: Where Should We Begin), Dear Sugar podcast featuring Cheryl Strayed and Steve Almond, and Cheryl Strayed's collection of essays from her time as the Dear Sugar columnist, titled Tiny Beautiful Things.

I’ve never talked to anyone about their experience with being adopted, let alone losing their adoptive parent as a young adult. This one gets into that, with Theodora Blanchfield. (This one is labeled Explicit, so keep that in mind when/where you're listening.)

Theodora has been blogging, writing professionally, for a lot of years. She’s been published in various online spaces, and most recently that work has included freelance writing, contributing deeply personal essays, and pieces on mental health. She’s also well on her way to becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a relatively new resident of LA after spending most of her life in NY and DC, and is learning to surf.

This episode covers a lot of grief, trauma, parental relationships, cancer, loss, money, adoptive experiences, and more. If any of that doesn’t feel good or safe to you right now, take care of yourself.

This episode navigates the process of one person's separation, divorce, and ultimately a move with two young kids. Megan Brookes and I met in DC— her as a new parent of 2, me as a new parent altogether—through a fitness group and community for parents. Her youngest and my oldest are only a few weeks apart. About a year later, Megan went through a separation, then divorce, and moved a few states away from the DC area. We talk about all of that. We also talk about a few ways that could be supportive to friends/family going through divorce, based on her experiences.

In some circles, it really feels like no one talks about “non-monogamous” relationships. Polyamory. Explorative and expansive curiosity about what we want, or don’t want, from the people we are in partnership with. We are TALKING about it all, on this episode.

Karlee Golightly is a queer and gender expansive human, creative being, and puzzle champion who lives in Denver, Colorado. When not working in intersectional eating disorder care, they tend to their ever-growing number of plants and spend quality time with their incredible chosen family.

Karlee joined me to talk about the ways in which they’ve explored relationship structures, non-monogamy, polyamory, queerness, all of the above. This was such a lovely, candid, and curious conversation. And they provide various resources along the way, all of which are linked in the show notes on NoOneTalksAbout.Substack.com.

In an open text box on Instagram, asking what people wanted this show to talk about, my friend Kelci answered “if/why you changed your name after marriage,” and she added “grief after changing your name”. My interest was piqued, because I had thought about this a lot but have only had a few conversations about it. It does feel like something no one talks about, it’s just a BIG decision that some folx make. For both of us, this decision felt more like a box to check, rather than a series of conversations to have between you and your partner, your family, or whomever else you feel safe exploring this with.

I want to note that there are a lot of heteronormative tones to this conversation, as Kelci and I explore our own experiences. I would LOVE to hear from other perspectives, including same-sex couples, folx in relationship structures and partnerships that deviate from gender norms or binaries, etc. Whatever your experience and your story, share it by commenting on this episode post at NoOneTalksAbout.Substack.Com, or by calling our podcast phone, 719-357-9079 and leaving a voicemail!

A lot of people are talking about burnout, so I won’t say No One Talks about it. But sometimes what we do here is talk about those pervasive topics, and just dig in a little deeper.

My friend, and fellow podcaster, Jess Jones joined me to talk about what burnout REALLY feels like. Jess is a nationally-recognized Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator, Writer, Speaker, and Digital Content Strategist. Jessica also co-hosts the top 50 Food Heaven Podcast, which explores the intersections of nutrition, health, and wellness through a social justice lens. With over 3 million downloads to date, the Food Heaven podcast has been a pillar for accessible and inclusive health and wellness since 2015.

As you can hear just by listening to that bio–which doesn’t even capture all that Jess does as a dietitian and entrepreneur—there’s a lot on her plate. And for a few years, there was way too much. We talk about that today, and we talk about how, in some ways, her body totally shut down in response to burnout.

No one talks about what happens to our social and emotional development as kids when one of our parents has a mental disability. Or, it feels like these conversations can be hard to come by, when friends around you have no idea what’s going on at home. And in this case, when we become friends in adulthood, it can be true that there is a lot of trauma we may never know to even ask about, until we do.

Tune in to hear Abby Chan talk about all of the above, and a lot more.

You'll find Abby @abbytheRD on Instagram, where her work centers around dismantling diet culture and supporting fellow humans in their relationships to food and movement.

No one talks about grief, death, and the anxiety that may ensue. Or, at least it can feel that way, when you’ve experienced a significant loss. Many of the friends and family around you will mean well, but may not feel equipped to have these conversations. At least not in their full honesty.

In this episode, I’m in conversation with Jessi Haggerty, pronouns she/her, an anti-diet registered dietitian and personal trainer, in private practice, based outside of Boston, MA.
