Jillian’s journey to becoming an influential leader in the engineering community started long before she was awarded the prestigious title of Australian Professional Engineer of the Year. Growing up, Jillian was always seen as career-focused. However, it wasn’t until later in her career that she realized the importance of directing her trajectory in a purposeful way. She recalls the difficulty in answering the classic career question: "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" For years, she couldn’t pinpoint a clear direction.
However, things began to change about 10 years ago when Jillian was consulting in the fields of safety, leadership, and team development. Though her consulting career was both fulfilling and lucrative, she yearned for more autonomy in her career decisions. It was then that she decided to take control of her professional narrative, diving into FOT (Fundamentals of Transaction) training in 2016.

When people think of the word transaction, they often think of a transaction as a simple tit for tat exchange. To be “transactional” can mean cold-hearted, calculated- and can be meant as an insult. However, a transaction is not merely a point of sale.

Dr. Gaunt has been an innovator in the field of ethnomusicology for over twenty years. Ethnomusicology is a discipline that examines how culture shapes musical people versus how musical people like celebrities shape culture. Dr. Gaunt specializes in black girlhood, musical blackness, and digital media studies. Her latest research examines how online music and tech platforms groom girls for patriarchal violence, particularly in girls’ intimate bedroom musical plays from YouTube to TikTok.
Her other accomplishments include being a member of the 2009 inaugural class of TED Fellows and her 2018 TED video “How The Jump Rope Got It’s Rhythm” has over 7 million views with translations in 29 languages and in 2022, she gave her first TED Talk as a Senior Ted Fellow. This episode, we are welcoming Dr. Daphne Thompson and Marne Power to our Legends on Legends Series on the Influential U Podcast.
Dr. Daphne Thompson is the owner of ConnectingMedicine, out of Melbourne, Australia where she has over 35 years of experience in both biomedical research and chinese medicine. At her clinic, she offers acupuncture, chinese herbal medicine, and chinese massage and specializes in women’s health, bowel disease and digestive problems, pain management, respiratory disease, and all kinds of chronic conditioins that do not respond to conventional treatments.
Marne Power is a Senior Program Faculty member at Influential U, where she leads and coaches our faculty in facilitating the Fundamentals of Transaction program. She is also the CEO and Principle Owner of MPower Consulting out of Charlottesville, Virginia, where she is a productivity consultant and executive coach for Department Chairs, Senior Leaders, and Academic Clinicians within the healthcare field.

This program is led in fellowship with co-founders Kirkland Tibbels and John Patterson and this initiative includes a wide range of strategies to advance and expand their own application of Transactional Competence and pave the path in the study of Transactional Leadership.

Lauren Cato Robertson is a CranioSacral Therapist, Lymph Drainage Therapist, and Reiki Master out of Texas, in the United States. She is the Co-Owner of the Ke Kino Massage Academy where they provide a unique massage therapy experience for thei clients, and a powerful education for their students She identifies as a Performer personality and hold’s a constructivist’s world view and her enthusiasm for art and life is undeniable. Dr. Gary Ward is a general practitioner with a focus on proactive preventative healthcare who specializes in working with high performing executives and CEOs out of Perth, Australia. Depending on the day, he identifies as an Inventor or Performer personality and holds a Subjectivist or Constructivist’s worldview. I’ve had the privilege of teaching the Fundamentals of Transaction Program with Gary, as he is part of our Faculty for Influential U.

Karina Christensen is a fan favorite of our podcast. Andrew Crellin is the Managing Director of Sterling and Currency out of Perth, Australia where he works as a numisist, or dealer in rare coins and banknotes. This week’s guests, Karina Christenson and Ron Sprengeler, had a unique experience with Influential U. They are the first and only couple to complete the whole curriculum together from start to finish. We all strive for happiness in our lives, and a big part of that comes from having strong and fulfilling relationships. Today we’re speaking with Tim Nicklas, whose story began with some early losses he worked to overcome as an intrapreneur within a major children’s hospital. Like many of us, at work, Tim faced personalities he failed to influence – or struggled to understand. All of us need buy-in from others at work. His remedy? Tim acknowledged his cognitive bias to think that other people share his worldview and found true value in diverse personalities. Having first participated in our programs in 2011, he still holds his role at the hospital, teaches new fathers how to be new Dads, and has recently joined the Faculty of Influential U.

Today’s guest is Influential U CEO and Co-founder John Patterson. You’ve heard him on this podcast since 2016, but somehow, we’ve never gotten to listen to him tell his story. In 2005, John was having an existential crisis, and his job, relationship, and life were simply not working for him, so he needed a change. At this time, John had already been long-time friends with Kirkland Tibbels, Influential U’s other Co-Founder, and through hundreds of hours of conversations with Kirkland, John was able to discover that he was being loyal at all costs. In other words, John was more committed to people and ideologies than he was to taking care of himself. Soon after, he ended his relationship, lost 70 pounds, earned a sizeable 6-figure income, and would eventually found Influential U along with Kirkland. Now John has thirty years of experience focused on personal, business, and management effectiveness and performance and has facilitated training for tens of thousands of people internationally.
