Jillian Formentin's journey to becoming the Australian Professional Engineer of the Year wasn’t just about mastering technical skills—it was about mastering her own narrative. Through intentional career decisions, embracing her strengths, and crafting a compelling story, Jillian has created a career that not only elevates her but inspires others.

Jillian’s journey to becoming an influential leader in the engineering community started long before she was awarded the prestigious title of Australian Professional Engineer of the Year. Growing up, Jillian was always seen as career-focused. However, it wasn’t until later in her career that she realized the importance of directing her trajectory in a purposeful way. She recalls the difficulty in answering the classic career question: "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" For years, she couldn’t pinpoint a clear direction.

However, things began to change about 10 years ago when Jillian was consulting in the fields of safety, leadership, and team development. Though her consulting career was both fulfilling and lucrative, she yearned for more autonomy in her career decisions. It was then that she decided to take control of her professional narrative, diving into FOT (Fundamentals of Transaction) training in 2016.

Helen Kearney is a sales recruiter for a global software company. Her life's journey and her career specialization allow us to examine the question that we all - at one time or another - find ourselves asking: what is my perfect job (or purpose or life's mission)?

As she explains, many people are exceptionally naive about their professional value. They may not understand their involvement in the larger transaction and the realities of their role in the marketplace. As such, she says, they often fail to consider or understand the needs of the employer and their concerns. Like any good marraige or satisfying position, a job is a reciprocal transaction.

Near the end of the episode, you'll also hear Helen's tips for your preparing your LinkedIn profile, resume, and job interview.

Who keeps us from falling off the proverbial cliff?

While some are naturally inclined to dream new ideas and others can’t help but build new relationships, there is a segment of society whose entire focus and role are to protect us from our poorly constructed shortcuts.

This typically skeptical personality recognizes that nothing around us is a coincidence; things are either poorly designed or built to exacting standards.

Often shamed for not seeing the world as ‘glass-half-full,’ this transactional personality plays the vital role in offering the evidence required to lay claim to facts.

Karl Strand founded his consultancy by making the most of his skepticism and guarding the standards for commercial architectural exteriors. Karl and his wife, Randee, live in Dallas, Texas.

They have been students of Influential U since June 2015. In this episode’s Talk, we’ll hear Co-Founder Kirkland Tibbels talk about the asset and liability of the Judge personality and how each personality can work together.

The personality we at Influential U refer to as the Producer is skilled with alliances and requests. Their superpowers are the ability to be short-term and objective in their thinking and they are highly work-oriented doers. They're who you want on your team because they are action oriented and ready to get to work. Their kryptonite, however, is that they may tend to halt things with premature or unnecessary actions and may avoid or dismiss completion and flexibility.

To learn more about this personality we invited a past guest of the podcast and student with Influential U, Tiran Jackson, who also happens to be a Producer Personality. Tiran is a professional speaker, author, engineer, life-coach, and a subject matter expert on resilience and helps his clients overcome their greatest adversities. You can learn more about him and the great things he’s doing by visiting RebornResilient.com. In this episode, Tiran will tell you about his worldview as a Producer Personality and share a deeper understanding of where this personality is an asset and where it may be a liability.

Their superpowers are the ability to be present-based, relationship-oriented people who are inclined to be highly flexible in their thinking. This episode we'll explore the Inventor Transactional Personality. This particular personality is skilled in vision and inventing big futures. Their Superpowers are the ability to be idea-oriented people who are self-reliant and highly subjective in their thinking. Their Kryptonite, however, is that they may tend to halt transactions with new ideas or a need to control everything, and they may do so to the detriment of their relationships and judgments.

To truly get inside the mind of an inventor we have a special guest, Influential U Consultant, Cesar Idrovo, who happens to identify as an Inventor Personality. He'll share his worldview as an inventor and share a deeper understanding of where his transactional personality is an asset and where it may be a liability.

Here at Influential U, we’ve studied well over two hundred different personality based models and many of them are quite complex, unintuitive, and ultimately not very useful. Today, we’re going to tackle the question of “why study personalities”, and give a brief description of the four “personalities in transaction” that we study here at Influential U. We're biased, but we're confident that after listening to this, you'll agreed that our version is much more valuable.

It’s our mantra here at Influential U and you hear it a lot when you work with us, "You Are Always Transacting." But what does that mean exactly?

When people think of the word transaction, they often think of a transaction as a simple tit for tat exchange. To be “transactional” can mean cold-hearted, calculated- and can be meant as an insult. However, a transaction is not merely a point of sale.

Whether you're negotiating a business deal, interacting with your loved ones around a holiday table, or just trying to survive the inter-office drama in your business, "You Are Always Transacting". This entails recognizing that there are always a constant stream of exchanges that are continuously shaping our day-to-day lives. Having an awareness of the existence of these constance exchanges and knowing how you can influence them can give you a leg up in the marketplace, and really everywhere in life.

Just like the American Psychologist Jerome Bruner said, "If you engage for long in the study of how human beings relate to one another, especially through the use of language, you are bound to be struck by the importance of 'transactions." What does that mean? Why is this important? Let's explore.

Today we’re speaking with Tim Nicklas, whose story began with some early losses he worked to overcome as an intrapreneur within a major children’s hospital. Like many of us, at work, Tim faced personalities he failed to influence – or struggled to understand. All of us need buy-in from others at work. His remedy? Tim acknowledged his cognitive bias to think that other people share his worldview and found true value in diverse personalities. Having first participated in our programs in 2011, he still holds his role at the hospital, teaches new fathers how to be new Dads, and has recently joined the Faculty of Influential U.

Today’s guest is Influential U CEO and Co-founder John Patterson. You’ve heard him on this podcast since 2016, but somehow, we’ve never gotten to listen to him tell his story. In 2005, John was having an existential crisis, and his job, relationship, and life were simply not working for him, so he needed a change. At this time, John had already been long-time friends with Kirkland Tibbels, Influential U’s other Co-Founder, and through hundreds of hours of conversations with Kirkland, John was able to discover that he was being loyal at all costs. In other words, John was more committed to people and ideologies than he was to taking care of himself. Soon after, he ended his relationship, lost 70 pounds, earned a sizeable 6-figure income, and would eventually found Influential U along with Kirkland. Now John has thirty years of experience focused on personal, business, and management effectiveness and performance and has facilitated training for tens of thousands of people internationally.

As you’ll hear in this episode, he’s accomplished a lot in his life and his profession, but there have been times when it’s been a struggle to find the balance between work, relationships, and family. This is a common struggle that many people experience, and Dr. Gary Ward was able to achieve harmony and satisfaction by implementing what he learned with Influential U.
