Grace Ahrens recently joined Women in Soccer (WIS) as the Executive Director, bringing her passion for building inclusive communities and her background in social work to the organization. With her previous experience as the GM of NYC Footy, the largest coed adult recreational soccer league in New York City, Grace is well-positioned to lead WIS in its mission to empower women and marginalized individuals in the soccer world.
Women in Soccer, founded in late 2020, is a national network that connects women and underrepresented individuals who love soccer. The organization’s mission is to increase agency and representation for these groups within the beautiful game through community building. WIS welcomes people of all mind/body types, sexual orientations, gender identities, races, religious backgrounds, and ethnicities, including allies.
The idea for WIS was born from the experiences of co-founder Courtney Carroll Levinsohn and founding member Tracy Hamm, who recognized the need for a support network for those facing barriers in the male-dominated soccer industry. The organization gained momentum following the U.S. women’s national team’s 2019 World Cup victory and their subsequent fight for equal pay and inclusion.
WIS values inclusion, passion, action, and grit. The organization provides a free platform for its members to connect, access resources, and find job opportunities in soccer. With over 4,600 members nationally, WIS is rapidly growing and evolving to meet the needs of the changing soccer landscape in the United States.
As Executive Director, Grace Ahrens is excited about the future of women’s soccer and is committed to making the industry more inclusive. Her leadership at WIS aligns perfectly with her background in social work and her dedication to creating progressive communities within the sport.

In this conversation, Rob Finkelstein, Trent Clark, and Eric Mader discuss the evolution of student-athlete compensation and the challenges and discrepancies in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) regulations. They explore the role of NIL collectives and boosters in supporting student-athletes and the impact of NIL on college athletics.
The conversation also explores the boundaries and regulations of NIL, sponsorship opportunities, and the influence of high-profile athletes. They discuss the reorganization and changes in college athletics, including the Dartmouth collective bargaining case.
Finally, they highlight the benefits of maintaining an LLC for NIL and a scandal that could potentially threaten the NCAA. The conversation discusses a scandal involving a wealth manager who misappropriated funds from his clients, including professional and college athletes. The manager offered bribes to major college coaches in exchange for referring wealthy athletes to him. The prevalence of such unethical behavior in college sports is alarming. The conversation also touches on the impact of leadership and the importance of values in sports. The concept of parity in college sports and the challenges and benefits of athletes transferring between programs are explored.

More about Orlando Arnold: President, MLBPA & NFLPA CertifiedOrlando Arnold is a former Division I-A athlete with over 10 years of experience in sales, marketing, negotiation, and contracts. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Alabama State University and an MBA from Troy University. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Orlando was raised in the shadow of Tiger Stadium, The Palace of Auburn Hills, and Ford Field. Growing up in such a rich sports environment sparked Orlando’s passion for sports early on.
After participating in athletics throughout high school and college, Orlando set his sights on a new challenge. The corporate world. The discipline and determination he’d cultivated over the years paid off well in his early years as a sales agent in the hospitality industry. It was here that Orlando learned the inner workings of contracts, negotiation, and marketing. After 5 years, Orlando set his sights on a slightly different challenge and stepped into the fast-paced world of pharmaceutical sales. Excelling in this role, Orlando was able to refine his marketing and sales skills and led a high performing team. Throughout this time, though, Orlando never lost his passion for athletics.
Shortly after graduating from Alabama State University, Orlando began working in coaching and player development in addition to his corporate career. To this end, he was successful. Orlando used his experience and talent to nurture and develop the skills of young athletes. A consummate and caring professional, Orlando helped 14 young athletes move on to the next level in their athletic journey, cultivating relationships with various coaches and athletic personnel.
Although he was raised in the northern Midwest, Orlando has spent nearly 15 years in the Southeast. Orlando played his college ball in the Southeast, received his degrees in the Southeast, and met his wife there as well. He’s planted a firm foundation with his family and Pyramid Sports & Entertainment Group in the southeast and is prepared to help you reach the pinnacle of success.

There are many layers to managing mental health in entrepreneurship: practical advice from entrepreneursThe importance of mental health has been increasingly recognized in recent years, and the entrepreneurial world is no exception. The podcast “Entrepreneur Perspectives” featured an insightful discussion between entrepreneurs, exploring their unique experiences and the mental health challenges they and their team face.
Entrepreneurship often involves high levels of stress, long working hours, and intense pressure to succeed. A founder shared their story during the podcast, describing how the financial burden and uncertainty of running a business led to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and self-doubt.
Similarly, employees working in startups and fast-paced environments often face immense pressure to perform, leading to increased stress and burnout. One of the entrepreneur’s employees highlighted the importance of having a supportive work culture where they could discuss their concerns openly without fear of judgment.
The podcast’s participants also offered valuable advice for tackling mental health challenges in the entrepreneurial world:
By incorporating these strategies, the entrepreneurial community can work together to address the unique mental health challenges faced by founders, entrepreneurs, and their employees. Fostering a culture of support and understanding is essential for the long-term success and well-being of all involved.
The resource for this mental health in entrepreneurship article comes from the episode: Cybersecurity for Web3 | Conversation with Eden Data Founder, Taylor Hersom
Here’s a section of the transcript from the full episode featuring Eric Kasimov and Taylor Hersom:
Eric: …and that’s why I wanted to have this conversation with you today, Taylor. As a successful entrepreneur, you’ve undoubtedly faced challenges when it comes to mental health. How do you maintain balance in your life, and how has that influenced the way you approach mental health at your company?
Taylor: That’s a great question, Eric. I think it’s important to recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health. I try to make time for self-care and personal growth, and I believe it’s crucial to create an environment where employees feel supported and encouraged to do the same.
Eric: Absolutely. It seems that more and more companies are starting to prioritize mental health. What are some things you’ve done at your company to create a supportive environment for employees?
Taylor: One of the things we’ve implemented is providing access to mental health resources and support services for our employees. We’ve also made it a point to openly discuss mental health and well-being during team meetings, as it helps to break the stigma and create a more open and understanding culture.
Eric: It’s great to hear about leaders like you who are taking steps to prioritize mental health in the workplace. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs and founders looking to do the same?
Taylor: I would encourage them to be open about their own mental health journey and to create a company culture that values emotional well-being. By doing so, they can not only improve their own mental health but also create a supportive environment for their employees to thrive.
Eric: Thank you for sharing your insights, Taylor. It’s been a pleasure having you on the show, and I’m sure our listeners will appreciate the advice and experiences you’ve shared. Let’s continue working together to raise awareness and prioritize mental health in the entrepreneurial world.

In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, it’s not uncommon for us to witness or be indirectly affected by traumatic events. Whether it’s through the news, social media, or in person, exposure to traumatic incidents can take a toll on our mental health. This article aims to shed light on recognizing and managing trauma, even if you’re only a witness to it, and provide guidance on how to handle and manage it for yourself and others.
Recognizing TraumaTrauma can manifest in various ways, and it’s essential to recognize the signs in ourselves and those around us. Some common indicators of trauma include:
Handling and Managing Trauma1. If you or someone you know is affected by trauma, here are some steps to help manage it: 2. Seek professional help: Mental health professionals, such as therapists or counselors, can provide support and guidance in coping with trauma. Early intervention can improve the prognosis and reduce the risk of developing serious mental health conditions. 3. Practice self-care: Engage in activities that promote relaxation and well-being, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies. Prioritize sleep, eat a balanced diet, and stay connected with loved ones for emotional support. 4. Create a safe space: Establish an environment where individuals affected by trauma can express their feelings and emotions without fear of judgment or criticism. 5. Encourage open communication: Encourage those affected by trauma to talk about their experiences and feelings with trusted friends, family members, or mental health professionals. 6. Participate in support groups: Support groups can provide a sense of community and understanding, allowing individuals to share their experiences and learn from others who have experienced similar situations.
Being Aware and CompassionateIn the aftermath of a traumatic event, it’s crucial to remember that everyone processes and copes with trauma differently. Acknowledging and validating the feelings of those affected is vital in fostering a supportive and compassionate environment. Remember that no one is promised another moment, so make the most of the time you have with those you care about by providing understanding, compassion, and support.
Conclusion to Recognizing and Managing TraumaRecognizing and managing trauma is essential for maintaining mental health and fostering resilience in the face of adversity. By being aware of the signs of trauma and providing support to those affected, we can help create a more empathetic and caring society. Whether you’re directly impacted by a traumatic event or a witness to it, remember that your mental health matters, and seeking help when needed is a sign of strength and self-awareness.

The world of sports betting is ridiculously big. According to Statista, the global sports betting industry reached $231 Billion in 2022. And it’s growing fast! We have to talk about it…
In this episode of The Sports Backdrop, we chat with Neil Zhang, the founder and CEO of Frontrunner. Frontrunner is a trailblazing decentralized sports prediction market set to revolutionize the way fans, investors, and sports betting enthusiasts engage with sports.
Discover how Frontrunner combines finance, sports betting, and blockchain technology to create a unique, dynamic experience for users. We cover everything including the impact of betting and fantasy sports on fan engagement, MLB’s challenges in keeping fans hooked, and even touch on the pressing issue of addiction in gambling. We discuss Neil’s insights into being a founder, managing stress, and the promising world of Web3. This episode is a must-listen for sports enthusiasts, millennials, Gen Z, and investors looking to stay ahead of the curve!
Two quotes from Neil Zhang that hit!
“It’s easier to be a sports fan today than at any time in history.”
“We all need to pair down Web3 for the better”
Topics discussed in this future of sports betting episode featuring Neil Zhang, founder and CEO of Frontrunner:
More about the guest, Neil Zhang:
Neil Brett Zhang was born in Philadelphia, and after moving to St. Louis, then to New York City, he returned to Philadelphia as a University of Pennsylvania student. He graduated with a BAS in computer science and fine arts in May of 2016. He worked in New York City as a member of Nielsen, primarily in data science before attending the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania for his MBA with a concentration in finance and marketing. Neil enjoys cooking and all things sports, with a particular interest in analytics and sports data modeling.
More on the vision of Frontrunner:
“In 2019, I placed a bet at the beginning of the season on the long shot San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl LIV. They would go on to make it to the Super Bowl but ended up losing. Despite being 99% right, I couldn’t cash in on my success. I then asked myself, “Why can’t I change my bet or position at any time and profit?” This one question turned into many I had with my friends, who became founders – all of them landing at the same conclusion – the modern sports fan is being underserved through antiquated ways of sports betting. The idea of stock market-style sports betting was born. (source: getfrontrunner.com)

Sports Tear People About is a blog by Mason Kasimov.Sports bring people together, but sports also tear people apart. This happens because people like different teams, sports, athletes, or coaches and get into arguments about which is better. It’s mostly opinion-based or not worth an argument. Now there are ways for people to get along through sports, but right now I think sports are causing separations, especially because of social media.
People argue about who the best players are. In every sport, there are arguments about who is the best and why. I see soccer fans fight over Messi and Ronaldo, basketball fans over Jordan and James, Ali and Tyson in boxing, and so on. I respect people standing up for what they believe in, but fans are getting into arguments. Instead of basketball fans talking about the greatness of Jordan and James, they hate each other. This causes separation because neither one wants to have a conversation, they just want to be right. Fans are hating simply because someone disagrees with them.
I also see sports fans disliking each other for liking different teams. I’m an Ohio State fan, and I hate that team up north, but I couldn’t care less if someone else liked them. I also don’t think less of people for going to Michigan because it doesn’t matter. People should be fans of whomever they want—my sister is a Jacksonville Jaguars fan because, in The Good Place, a TV show, the team is mentioned a lot. Everyone has a reason for liking a team, and it’s better to just respect it rather than hate it. Fans are what makes sports great, and it’s time people accept that not everyone is going to like the same team as them. The little rivalries are not worth it.
Some of the biggest debates I’ve seen on social media are debates about which sport is better. That is completely opinion-based, and it’s silly to get mad about. Someone may love football, but think soccer is stupid. That’s their opinion, and I do think it’s weird to hate an entire sport. I may find some sports boring to watch or play, but I’m not going to hate someone who likes that sport. I love the sports world so much, and I don’t want to be a part of what ruins the sports community. Sports fans should respect other fans, no matter what sport they may like.
Instead of everyone arguing when it comes to sports, people should find it as a way to bond. If you see a fan of a rival team, go talk and have fun with them, don’t hate them. I’ve had Michigan fans give me some light teasing for being a Buckeye fan, and honestly, I have fun with it. That’s what sports are about, having fun. We play, watch, and talk about sports for entertainment, which is why we don’t need petty rivalries. Sports are meant to bring people together, not pull us apart.

In a recent broadcast of Monday Night Football, former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning revealed that the commonly held belief in the importance of “halftime adjustments” in football is a fallacy. Manning said, “I don’t think I ever made a halftime adjustment in my entire 18-year career. I think it is the biggest myth in football — the halftime adjustment.”
Manning, who played for the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos during his 18-year career, is considered one of the brightest minds in football. When Manning speaks on major football topics, everyone listens. Michael Lombardi, a former successful football executive, and current media analyst backed up this statement by Manning with his own Twitter posts. He stated the game is not won or lost during halftime but rather broken into three parts:
“The first part of the game, according to Lombardi, is evaluating the first quarter and assessing the game plan to ensure that the initial strategy was correct. During the second and third quarters, adjustments are made within the framework of the strategy, and the fourth quarter becomes a stand-alone game. Adjustments must occur quickly in between series, with the best play callers anticipating the moves of their opponents rather than reacting to them.”
Peyton’s brother, Eli Manning, echoed his sentiments, agreeing that there is not much time to do anything during halftime but pee, get a drink, and get back to work. This highlights the importance of quick thinking and strategy in the sport, rather than relying on halftime adjustments.
This concept of halftime adjustments in football can also be applied off the gridiron. It’s crucial to continuously evaluate and adjust strategies within the framework of a long-term plan, rather than relying on a halftime adjustment to fix a problem.
Now let’s dive deeper into the fallacy bias:
Peyton Manning’s revelation that the commonly held belief in the importance of “halftime adjustments” in football is a fallacy has not only challenged the traditional understanding of the sport but also highlights the dangers of fallacy bias. Fans of football have long believed that halftime is where adjustments are made, and coaches and players are given the opportunity to make crucial changes to their game plan. However, Manning’s comments have shown that this is not the case and that any major adjustments must be made throughout the game.
This belief in halftime adjustments as a pivotal moment in the game is an example of the fallacy bias, where individuals rely on preconceived notions rather than evaluating new information. In this case, fans and even some analysts have been led to believe that halftime is the time for adjustments, instead of understanding that the game is continuously evolving, and adjustments must be made on the fly.
Peyton Manning’s revelation serves as a reminder that it’s crucial to question assumptions and evaluate new information, rather than relying on preconceived notions. This applies not only to the understanding of sports but also to the business world, where leaders must avoid the fallacy bias and continuously evaluate and adjust their strategies within the framework of a long-term plan.
In conclusion, Peyton Manning’s comments on halftime adjustments in football serve as a reminder that the game, as well as business, is not won or lost during halftime (or a specific key moment), but rather through a combination of proper planning and quick thinking. Relying on halftime adjustments as a solution is a fallacy.
More about fallacy bias:
The term “fallacy bias” refers to the tendency to rely on preconceived notions or assumptions, rather than evaluating new information. Fallacy bias is a cognitive bias that leads individuals to make decisions based on false or invalid reasoning. It can lead to flawed decision-making, as well as a lack of critical thinking, and can be a significant obstacle to effective problem-solving.
The term “fallacy bias” is not a widely used term in psychology, economics, or other related fields. However, the concept of bias in reasoning is well studied in cognitive psychology and in the field of reasoning and decision-making, where it is referred to as “cognitive bias” There are many different types of cognitive biases, including confirmation bias, which is the tendency to seek out and interpret information in a way that confirms one’s preconceptions, and the sunk cost fallacy, which is the tendency to continue investing in a decision or project because of the resources that have already been invested, even when it is no longer rational to do so.
