Healthcare workers demand their worth!!! Check out the latest episode of the Nice Veins Bro Podcast where we discuss the historic 75,000+ employee strike and tentative deal reached by Kaiser Permanente and a coalition of unions. The largest healthcare labor dispute in U.S. history concluded with a new contract that addresses staffing shortages and includes 21% wage increases over the next four years. Tens of thousands of nurses, ER technicians, and pharmacists participated in the three-day strike, highlighting the impact of understaffing on patient care. The involvement of U.S. Labor Secretary Julie Su was credited in helping to reach the agreement. Lexa and I also discuss all about labor unions within healthcare - are they good or bad? At what cost did Kaiser succumb to the bargaining table? Who's going to pay for all this?

Today we're looking into a story about a psych ward worker who claims to have been fired for taking a mere 15-minute break... have you ever wondered about the ugly realities of working in a psychiatric hospital? THIS MIGHT BE IT!! Despite repeatedly voicing her unease and feeling ill-equipped to work one-on-one with a patient with a history of assault, she was coerced to continue. We dissect the trauma she experienced, the risks she was exposed to due to inadequate training and staffing, and the responsibility resting on the shoulders of her higher-ups. Plus, we try to unpack what she can learn from this experience and how she can rise above the bad circumstances so she is better prepared to stand up for herself in the future.

Ever imagined the reality of a world where babies can be nurtured and brought to life outside a human womb? Well, brace yourself as we unpack this bold, and perhaps unnerving reality. We shine a light on the science-fiction-like concept of artificial wombs and how they could revolutionize neonatal care. We navigate the intricate phases of testing this technology, weighing its potential rewards against the inherent risks, and contemplate its role in saving the lives of premature babies.
As we tread further into this futuristic landscape, we're compelled to confront the ethical dilemmas that loom with this technology. What does this mean for cost-driven access? How might it modify the traditional sentiments attached to pregnancy and childbirth? And, perhaps most importantly, how might the emotional and psychological well-being of an infant be affected if they are grown in labs instead of a mother's womb?

In this episode, we talk about a recent news story that has shocked the world. A former NICU nurse from the UK, Lucy Letby, was convicted of killing 7 babies and attempting to murder 10 others. While it’s easy to highlight the tragedy, the individuals who deserve our attention are the families who were tragically impacted and the incredible Dr. Ravi Jayaram, the doctor who repeatedly raised concerns about his former colleague months before police were alerted. Because of his determination, Lucy was caught and thrown in jail, now serving multiple life sentences. This is a heartbreaking story that reminds us of how important it is to fight for the lives of the most vulnerable.

Have you ever been furious because someone criticized you for something you said or did? In this episode, Lexa and I talk about the best way to receive criticism without getting defensive. Some of the strategies we share include digging deeper to understand the feedback, determining what is useful, and giving yourself time to practice implementing the given criticism. We conclude with a reflection on the importance of humility and refer to a Bible passage that helps remind us to stay meek in all things because that's where we truly gain wisdom! (Proverbs 11:2).

In this episode I discuss the broken healthcare system and how we can take responsibility to make positive change. I address common complaints about the healthcare industry, such as lack of access to medical are and discrimination, and encourage listeners to focus on what they can control and take action in their own areas of influence. The episode emphasizes personal responsibility and growth, building strong relationships, setting goals, and accepting feedback. Here are the main takeaways on how we can practically work on ourselves so we are better prepared to address the large issues within the broken US healthcare system: 1. Start by acknowledging your own flaws and areas where you can improve 2. Focus on what you can control and take action in those areas 3. Take the initiative to learn and grow in your field 4. Build strong relationships with colleagues and supervisors, first by listening and then patiently communicating effectively 5. Set goals for yourself and hold yourself accountable by plugging into a community that has people with varied opinions 6. Always accept feedback as a healthy opportunity to grow rather than an attack. Do not be afraid of correction!

Do you ever find yourself hating your job in healthcare because of impatient, inconsiderate, and downright rude patients and families? In this episode we're going through some practical tips on how to deal with it! First, you must do some self-evaluation. Second, set some clear boundaries and communicate effectively. Don't forget to listen actively and stay cool and professional at all times. Remember, sometimes you gotta be the bigger person and bring in the healthcare team or supervisor if things really get rough. In the end, we must always remember that patients and families in most healthcare settings are going through some of the lowest moments in their lives. While this is no excuse to be rude, it helps us empathize more with the people we work with.

GUEST: Aaron Rivera, RN - In this episode, Aaron shares why it's important for nurses to find time to do what they love outside of work. Tune in to hear his insights and personal experience as an ICU travel nurse, power-lifter, and creative! Working in healthcare can be tough and stressful, so it's important to take a breather and recharge for mental and emotional well-being. Pursuing hobbies or interests outside of work can also provide a sense of purpose and joy beyond one's career. Finding a strong, positive community is super critical! When nurses feel fulfilled and happy outside of work, they're more likely to bring enthusiasm and positivity to their job. This can lead to better patient care and outcomes, too! That’s a win-win.

In today’s episode I share my perspective on a recent story regarding HCA Healthcare pressuring patients and their families into hospice. Read the full article here:
https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-care/doctors-say-hca-hospitals-push-patients-hospice-care-rcna81599
The article states, “Salas said she believed her daughter would pull through, but doctors and nurses at the hospital kept telling her otherwise. Over 10 days in October, less than a month after Perez entered St. David’s, Salas received repeated visits from a palliative care nurse, her hospital record shows. Every other day, Salas said, the nurse urged her to initiate end-of-life care for her daughter. Several of Perez’s doctors also pressed Salas to remove her daughter from the ventilator, she said, in visits confirmed by details from Perez’s chart.”
Is this just a big misunderstanding? Are hospitals hiding something? And if it really is a hospital-wide agenda, what kind of benefits could they have with more patients on hospice? Comment below with your opinion…

Healthcare today is so focused on disease care versus prevention. But hospitals don’t promote the fundamentals of health living anymore! Living a healthy lifestyle involves many different factors, including good nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight, temperance, air, rest, and trust in God. Each of these elements plays an important role in maintaining physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. And often times, these basic elements, if implemented appropriately, help reverse and heal the already diseased!
Today, we’re reviewing the basic health fundamentals. Have you ever heard of NEWSTART? It’s an accronym that stands for: Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air, Rest, Trust in God.
Let’s start from the top. Good nutrition is essential for fueling the body with the nutrients it needs to function properly. Eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats can help prevent chronic diseases and promote overall health.
Exercise is also crucial for maintaining good health. Regular physical activity can help improve cardiovascular health, build muscle, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. It can also improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.
Water is another essential element of a healthy lifestyle. Drinking plenty of water can help keep the body hydrated, aid in digestion, and flush out toxins from the body. Sunlight is also important for maintaining good health, as it provides the body with vitamin D, which is necessary for strong bones and a healthy immune system.
Temperance, or moderation, is important for maintaining balance in life. This means avoiding excess in all areas, including sugar, alcohol, caffeine, and other substances. It also means practicing self-control and avoiding harmful behaviors.
Air is something we often take for granted, but clean air is essential for good health. Breathing polluted air can cause respiratory problems and other health issues. Taking steps to reduce air pollution and improve indoor air quality can help protect our health.
Finally, sufficient rest and trusting in God are important for maintaining overall well-being. Getting enough sleep and taking time to rest and recharge can help reduce stress and improve mental health. Trusting in God can be a source of great comfort, peace, and strength during difficult times. In addition to giving us the necessary support to face life's challenges, it can also help us maintain a positive outlook on life and maintain our spiritual health. Moreover, our faith is an essential aspect of salvation, as it helps us to build a strong relationship with Christ as we follow His teachings. By relying on God's guidance and wisdom, we can navigate the ups and downs of life with greater ease and confidence, knowing that He has already won the victory for us and offers eternal life as a free gift to all.
In healthcare, especially within the hospital, we must get back to promoting and teaching the fundamentals of healthy living! By prioritizing good nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight, temperance, air, rest, and trust in God, we truly can live healthier, happier lives.
Be a positive force and influence within healthcare and society.

We all remember the roller-coaster we had during the last few years. Tori Jensen, registered nurse and dietitian, was hard at work on the front lines at Kaiser Permanente hospital in southern California when she was confronted with a difficult situation. She had to make a difficult choice between her convictions and her job. After going down the unpopular path to resist the mandates, she made headlines across the country when she posted a video of herself being escorted out of her unit by hospital security during her shift. The video went viral on social media garnering many thousands of views and comments. On this episode, Tori shares why she made her decision, what it cost her, and how God inspired her resilience to overcome, even starting a new business focused on preventative health and lifestyle medicine.

In this episode, Dunn and Kianna share their experience at Wildwood Lifestyle Center, where they sought care to address diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia with natural remedies. They share their experience, including the schedule, treatment, classes, and other services they received at the center. One of the treatments to address Dunn's high blood pressure was a certain kind of herbal tea! We also discuss the importance of keeping a balance between conventional and alternative medicine, which are too often pitted against each other. This balanced approach is often referred to as complementary and integrative medicine. As patient advocates, we must emphasize the significance of treating body, mind, and spirit in medicine! Keeping a wholistic approach will always benefit patients in the long run.

At some point or another, everyone heard this piece of advice: “Do what your passionate about and you’ll never have to work another day in your life!” I always rolled my eyes when I heard that. It always made me wonder if work is something we should be trying to escape…
In this episode, my nurse wife, Lexa, and optometrist brother, Dr. Anthony Cortes, join me to discuss a topic that many people struggle with: WORK! Have you noticed that in society, work is often perceived as a burden? This is the toxic idea that work is merely an oppressive means to make a living. While that may be true about some kinds of work, this isn’t true about work as a whole. Maybe we confuse WORK with JOBS. Those are not interchangeable! Because of this misconception about work being oppressive, people spend their whole life depressed about their current circumstance, looking toward retirement as their only saving grace. Others spend hundreds of dollars on courses from online gurus that promise fully passive income without putting much effort in.
However, the Bible takes a much different approach to work. We discover that God assigned it to us even at creation as a blessing!
“All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23 NIV
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15 NIV
Of course, we’re not talking about unproductive labor or fruitless busy work, but rather a means to bring profit and take care of people and world around us. By reframing the way we think about work, we can find purpose and fulfillment in our careers!

Are you tired of feeling down and unhappy? Just stop being sad! Sounds easy enough, right? If happiness is a choice, why doesn’t everyone just CHOOSE to be happy and why doesn’t that good feeling last all day, every day?
While we can’t choose to avoid negative emotions, our happy or sad attitudes are a result of derived feelings influenced by our thoughts. If you’re interested in reading an article that explains the difference between emotions and feelings, check it out here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-pleasure-is-all-yours/202202/the-important-difference-between-emotions-and-feelings
In this podcast, I reveal daily habits that can contribute to happiness, such as starting the day right by getting enough rest, practicing gratitude throughout the day, eating healthy meals, and creating time for exercise and relaxation. Remember to include hobbies that fill you with joy and satisfaction! Moreover, I emphasize the importance of connecting with people and opportunities that uplift and build you up.
One of the best recommendations I could ever give is to follow the command found in Philippians 4:4-8, which encourages us to think about things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. In a world where negativity seems to be so prevalent, it's important to focus on the positive and beautiful aspects of our lives. Choose joy by changing your mindset and attitude, and take action to improve your daily habits to stay happy all day long. It’s possible!

Should nurses really be posting TikToks of themselves at work?
In this episode, my wife and I talk about an explicit video Oschner Health staff uploaded on TikTok. In the video, nurses are seen lip syncing, twerking, and acting out sexual scenarios to ‘Sl*t Me Out’ NLE Choppa. Staff members are noticeably filmed in their scrubs with their facility badges on clear display!
Needless to say, it garnered lots of attention… with some calling for their licenses to be revoked! What do YOU think? Did these nurses take it too far? Do they really deserve to be fired?
After weighing in, Lexa and I also give our personal advice on how healthcare professionals should handle social media.

Establishing a consistent morning routine can have a profound impact on our life because it sets the tone for the whole day!
One of the best habits to implement in the morning is waking up earlier. When you wake up early, you have more time to yourself before the day's demands start taking over. This extra time can be used to exercise, meditate, or work on a personal project. By starting your day with a sense of accomplishment, you are more likely to continue being productive throughout the day - this is why you should always try to start with something simple, like MAKING YOUR BED!
Morning routines can also have a positive impact on your mental health. Incorporating mindfulness practices into your morning routine, such as meditation or prayer, can help reduce stress and anxiety. Taking time for yourself in the morning can also help you feel more centered and grounded, allowing you to face the challenges of the day with a clear and focused mind.
Remember, it's never too late to start a morning routine. Start small and work your way up to a routine that works for you, and watch as your life transforms for the better.

Nobody likes the person who can't be corrected. Today we're talking about the worst attribute for any healthcare and wellness professional: PRIDE! This can often start as a healthy dose of self-confidence but if we aren't careful, it can turn sour pretty quickly.
Too often, because of our unique role, title, education, or knowledge, we become attached to a higher view of ourselves than we probably deserve and it can have detrimental effects on the people around us - including the people we care for and serve. Sometimes when people doubt our conclusions or challenge our expertise, we get defensive and neglect humility. This, of course, becomes a major problem because it ruins the trusting relationship we have with people.
How can you practice humility today? My Optometrist brother and I discuss in today's podcast!

Your comfort zone will kill you!
I was recently reading a book that someone from my church wrote called "Power to Thrive" and was taken back by the concept that only 2% of the population ACTUALLY thrives. The author of the book, Richard Cavaness, stated that 98% of people do NOT chase after a life outside of their comfort zone.
In this podcast, my Optometrist brother and I explore how this mindset can dramatically change your life and why it's important that people in healthcare adopt this mindset shift in their day-to-day.

My NEW goal is... to build the best personal development podcast for healthcare and wellness professionals. That's right, I'm including more voices in the conversation -- not just nurses... and here's why: I've realized my vision for Nice Veins Bro is much larger. Although I'm passionate about nursing, and I'll always continue to champion that perspective, I've realized that a lot of us in health/wellness carriers go through the same things. We are stronger when we view ourselves as being on the same team in promoting the three core values: GOD, WELLNESS, & PURPOSE.
I'm excited to have different guests with fresh views/opinions as we pursue personal development. You'll start to see changes on the website and social media pages. But have mercy, it won't be lightening fast because I'm still a one-man show for now. Thank you for joining my small tribe. Let's get 100 subs!

PART 2 of 2 // YIKES, It's a conflict of values! ⚠️ This is the FIRST EVER Nice Veins Bro open discussion segment! Our guests today are my brother, Anthony Cortes, OD, and my best friend, Jae-Min Park, MD. Today we're covering one of the toughest challenges that healthcare professionals have face every day: Striving for impartiality, to ensure that our personal beliefs and opinions do not interfere with patient care.
It's crucial to mention that having an impartial approach undoubtedly brings the patient at the center of their care... this is what we should strive for! However, I have found that when a serious ethical situation arises, it's nearly impossible to NOT have a conviction about it -- especially when it contradicts our core values. I have always had difficulty with this. I often ask myself: should I be required to set aside my core values to guarantee patient satisfaction? Should my patient's wishes be granted at the cost of my convictions--especially when I believe it will actually hurt the patient? Yikes! A lot of it depends on the situation...
It can be easy to be closed off to new ideas, especially when they challenge our existing beliefs. But when we faced with difficult questions like these, it's so important to approach them with an open mind and a willingness to listen to all perspectives. Let's have an open discussion!

There's a quote from Tony Robbins that says "The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives." This obviously means that the way we communicate is of utmost importance! Similarly, the Bible has two incredible verses I would like to share with you:
*"The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit." Proverbs 15:4
"But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgement for every empty word they have spoken." Matthew 12:36*A simple Google search about how to improve your communication will bring up loads of great insight but here are my 6 favorite tips:
Some real, practical examples where we can use these techniques are...
During job interviews, talking to doctors or anyone else on the multidisciplinary team, taking/giving shift report, during emergency situations like codes or even for palliative moments like talking to family members as their loved one passes.
Successful communication doesn't just mean getting something off your chest. It means saying something in a way that the person receiving it will be able to understand and digest it.

Nurses have always been called to be impartial. This means treating people with the same level of respect - not favoring any one individual more than another. But with this concept of being just, I have to ask myself, what is fairness defined by? What is our moral compass?
One of the first steps in nursing practice is to be self-aware. Do you remember studying this in nursing school? Practicing self-awareness can help ground us so we can have clarity between the good vs bad in our personal lives. As Christians, we find this source of morality within Scripture.
Far too often we are swept away in passivity - avoiding any view or stance that contradicts the norm because it's an easier alternative to conflict. How can we discover the absolute truth when we don't take an active role in hashing out critical topics? Passivity is stupid because it thwarts growth and development! Furthermore, even after we are convicted about the correct stance on a critical issue, we're too afraid to stand for those core values.
The scary truth is that people die in their silence - whether they're made silent or choose to be silent…. People also die when they speak out but I'd rather die while speaking out about something I'm convicted about than die in silence because I didn't say anything. Don't you?
In short, here's a bullet list of my quick tips to avoid being a coward...
STOP being passive:
STAND for your values
The reason this is so crucial - especially for healthcare workers - is because I see society becoming more and more comfortable "cancelling" any view that opposes the main stream. This a dangerous phenomenon happening all around... and it gets more prevalent with each passing day. In fact, I believe it's already beginning to affect our practice in disastrous ways.
I sincerely believe that if we give in to this "group think" and "cancel culture" ideology, we will undoubtedly destroy every part of our profession and beyond. Surely, it will hinder our pursuit of that "next-level" life and cause harm to society as a whole. I'm done being in the gray area. Let's be intentional about standing for our core values!

People say not to live life with regret, but what about the people who cheat on their spouse or text/drive and end up killing someone else on the road? Surely, there must be a healthier approach to the idea of regret! I would hope that those of us who do any kind of wrong, feel guilty about our decisions!
Today we're talking about the pros and cons of regret and how to deal with it when it starts to overwhelm us. To start, here's the list I made:
Pros about REGRET
Cons about REGRET
I personally struggle with regret. I'm so fearful of regret that I have trouble with being indecisive about things because I don't want to feel guilty about making the "wrong" choice afterward. Sometimes I don't keep regret at bay and it begins to take control of my thoughts. If I'm not careful, it will put me in a depressive and negative attitude -- it's like a poison!
But it doesn't have to be this way. Here's how I deal with regret when I get hit with a trigger and I start to realize it's beginning to overwhelm me:
STEP 1... Stop everything and make an assessment: Was the choice/situation entirely within my control? If it was not in my control, why am I feeling guilty about something I had no control over? If I keep having negative thoughts, it's a good idea to find a therapist and together understand if there's something in my past that I haven't healed from.
STEP 2... Consider what my life life would have been had I made that other choice... am I believing lies about my "what if"? Am I simply not being grateful for how my current life has played out? I need to remember to count my blessings.
STEP 3... If it's truly regret: Either I need to take corrective action immediately, or make note of the lessons I've learned so I don't miss opportunities to do the right thing in the future.
Regret is going to affect us throughout our lives... Let's make sure we use it to our advantage! This is the healthy approach to regret.Be a positive force within healthcare and society.

"Just do it" - what does the famous Nike swoosh even mean? WHAT IS IT ? Is it just me, or does it feel like life is only about achievements, attainments, and finish lines? What makes it worse is, it's what SOCIETY deems as successful feats. There can be a lot of stress surrounding this concept and we may often feel a great deal of pressure on a daily basis. Ever heard of TOXIC MOTIVATION?Today, we are talking about feeling satisfied with a life of mediocrity - is it okay to have this worldview? Or will we find the joy of life in fulfilling our endless list of goals?
Recently, I came across these two articles...
"What if all I want is a mediocre life?" by Kristi O'Reilly (January 17, 2016) https://www.alifeinprogress.ca/want-mediocre-life/
"Being mediocre is the most valuable thing you can do in life." by Monique Bowley (April 1, 2017) https://www.mamamia.com.au/mediocre-life/
It seems like some people have tried to solve the problem of living in this rat race by making MEDIOCRITY the goal.
O'Reilly writes: "What if I embrace my limitations and stop railing against them. Make peace with who I am and what I need and honor your right to do the same. Accept that all I really want is a small, slow, simple life. A mediocre life. A beautiful, quiet, gentle life. I think it is enough."Although beautifully written, I can't help but disagree and wonder if she truly knows the definition of "mediocre". A beautiful, quiet, gentle life is far from mediocre. Especially if that's the goal you've set for your life!
What's more concerning is Bowley's rebuttal in 2017, single-handedly blaming the self-help industry for the rise in depression:"The built narrative now in pop culture is, if you’re not progressing or striving for more, if you’re not working hard on yourself, then you’re hardly working. And what’s the result of this human 'progress'? We are more depressed than ever. Depression is now the leading cause of ill-health and disability worldwide."She continues: "So save yourself the trouble of a clean house, a well-balanced gut, an entrepreneurial mindset and a lean-in philosophy. Be ordinary. Average. Middle-of-the-road. Drop out of this race for self-improvement…"I refuse to accept that narrative. Instead, I believe what Mark Manson says: "Mediocrity, as a goal, sucks. But mediocrity, as a result, is OK."
It seems to me, that the need to embrace stagnation and mediocrity comes from the FEAR that we will never be good enough. Stop comparing your journey with that of others in this world! Always be looking for ways to improve and grow YOURSELF for YOURSELF and the benefit of others around you.
I believe some of life's greatest joys come from progress. Do not fall into the trap of expecting your joy to come from completing a task, achieving a goal, conquering a mission. Accomplishments have value and should be celebrated, but they are nothing more than markers that reveal the progression on your journey.
Don't be satisfied with mediocrity. Be satisfied with progress.

Several nurses were fired this past December for a TikTok video they uploaded while at work. An NBC headline reads "Nurses at Atlanta Hospital Under Fire Over TikTok Video Mocking Maternity Patients". Yikes.
It was part of a trend called #IckChallenge where people made videos revealing the things that bothered them about a certain subject or person. Shortly after the nurses uploaded the video, it went viral and it lead to them being fired.
Emory Healthcare said in a statement: "This video does not represent our commitment to patient- and family-centered care and falls far short of the values and standards we expect every member of our team to hold and demonstrate... Every patient at Emory Healthcare deserves to be cared for by a compassionate, experienced team in a comfortable and safe environment."
Did the hospital do the right thing?
First thing I'll say is this: If you think these nurses are evil for what they said, I'm not sure what to tell you. The majority of nurses I've worked with have said similar things, if not worse. I simply don't think the statements jokingly made by these nurses reveal any evil intention. In fact, I think they may very well be highly skilled at work.
So what was the problem? They were on the clock! They were in uniform! They were talking about specific scenarios within the community they serve! Because of these reasons, I believe the hospital did the right thing…
HOWEVER, I have something to say about that too.
I have a very difficult time believing virtue signal statements made by hospitals. I don't generally believe hospitals are "patient- and family-centered". It's almost always about their reputation and making sure they cover their butt. They will do almost anything - even at the cost of the patient and their families - to keep a good reputation. They don't truly stand for anything. They're not truly virtuous. At the end of the day, societal approval matters most.
For example, the hospitals never fired medical staff when it was trendy to make dance videos at work during the COVID-19 pandemic. I can't think of a more NON-patient NON-family centered care situation... when loved ones were dying from COVID-19 and family couldn't visit because of policy restrictions, hospital staff was dancing for the world to see. But nurses weren't fired over that... it was celebrated! Why? Because society approved of it. It was how the profession was "coping". Not okay.
Here's the safe thing to do: DO NOT EVER MAKE VIDEOS AT WORK.
Also, here are some additional reminders...
Follow the law (HIPPA) / Do NOT reveal specific details / Keep content more generalized / Make content from home, NOT the workplace / Make content when you're OFF the clock / Make disclaimers opinions are my own / Constantly check yourself… am I bringing positive value? / Always accept the riskMake sure you're aware of your employers guidelines. Do this more so out of respect for the profession. If you're interested in listening to my series on how to be a REAL NURSE, click here!

Can you believe it's 2023? The last 3 years have been… WILD. Today, I'm going to be talking about the lessons I've learned even through all the crazy ups and downs; Lessons I've learned about society, myself, and God.
Here's the lesson I've learned about society...
Lesson #1 - People are sheep. Maybe you've heard that saying: When disaster strikes, you are propelled forward in the direction you were already going. I think the pandemic revealed a lot of the brokenness that already existed in our world and how it functions. When we feel threatened or afraid, we scatter everywhere, follow anyone, and don't ask the right questions. We start bickering, blowing people off, and get offended at every turn. We fall into manipulation, allow ourselves to be brainwashed and fall prey to corruption. WE ARE A MESS.
Here's the lesson I've learned about myself...
Lesson #2 - I need to take personal responsibility. I must vet what I consume, and think for myself. It's time we all take charge of our personal lives! Most of us can probably agree that corporations, organizations, associations -- YES, even political parties, DON'T CARE about us as individuals. They are so far removed from our day-to-day lives. Let's stop lying to ourselves! Let's take ownership of our convictions and choose to live them out - be TRUE to ourselves and realize that the health and wellness of our immediate community is really what matters. This does not mean we must be extremely individualistic. But it does mean we are called to be the gatekeepers of our homes, families, and local community.
Here's the lesson I've learned about God...
Lesson #3 - God is in control. Even when it was difficult to believe this truth, I can now realize that He answered my prayers, kept His promises, and showed me immeasurable grace throughout the 3 last years. I've found myself weeping before God, thanking Him for all He's blessed me with - ashamed at how I could have missed it all in my selfish complaining.
Isaiah 46:9-10
Philippians 4:6-7
Psalm 23:2-3
There's so much within our control. And yet, one of the critical components of living that "next-level" life is in the concept of surrender. Surrendering your life -- the parts of it you can't control -- entirely to Jesus Christ. If we would just allow Him to lead us to rest. Why not ask Him to give you that peace that passes all understanding.
Friend... that's a promise He will keep.

Have you ever asked yourself, was I truly meant to be a nurse? I think the majority of nurses have gone through this.... feeling like we might have made a mistake! Did we struggle through nursing school, working so hard, only to realize that the dream we had once aspired for is actually not what we want to do. In fact, it might feel like the exact opposite.
I remember feeling like I had made the wrong choice for my career during my first year as a nurse. I had good days and bad days... and on the bad days, it truly felt like a nightmare. How can we tell if these feelings are merely the regular ups and downs of any job? Or could they be a sign that we weren't really meant for it?
Sometimes, it's difficult to answer those questions. In today's episode, we are talking about 5 signs you shouldn't be a nurse. If you're thinking about going to nursing school, or you're considering abandoning the career you've already worked so hard for, pay close attention! I hope this list, helps bring some clarity.
You should NOT be a nurse, if...
Nursing truly isn't for everyone.
The most important factor in your decision to become a nurse is: YOUR WHY.
Helpful questions to ask yourself:
Does this profession fill me up?
Do I see myself progressing and growing in my field?
What comes easy to me that is typically difficult for others?
Am I gifted to do what I do at work?
What has this career taught me about myself?
Am I honestly ready and willing to abandon my profession for something else?
The most important thing to remember is this:
Nursing is not your identity. Nursing is something you do.
If you've found clarity about the purpose of your life and it lies outside of this current profession... IT'S OKAY to walk away from it all. At the end of the day, that's what nursing is all about. With a loving and holistic approach, helping each other live the very best life possible.

Let's talk about a few things I wish nursing school should be teaching students!
Now, I don't want to sound too idealistic. Nursing school won't teach you everything you need know before going into the real world. Some things you'll just have to learn on the job because there's no possible way you'll get the training while in school... and that's okay.
But here's what I think should have been covered -- or at least, focused on more in detail -- while in nursing school:
Empathizing with others
How to process trauma
Healthy relationship building
Comprehensive list of options for nurse specialties/jobs
At the end of the day, even though nursing school doesn't teach you everything you need to know... IT'S NOT AN EXCUSE to stay stagnant. Let's commit to ALWAYS be learning new things and growing ourselves into better nurses and people.

Have you ever felt like there is just TOO MUCH TO DO! How can you possibly get it all done - especially when you feel drained after working in healthcare?
Let's talk about ways to set ourselves up for success once we get home from work - I want to focus on those of us who work 3 twelve-hour shifts every week. Some people think it's a great schedule that optimizes our productivity because we get 4 full days off every week! For others, it feels like we can NEVER get anything done because the job duty tires us so much and it always feels like work days interrupt our weekly flow!
Here are my three tips to get the most done during the week:
Tip #1 - GET ENOUGH REST
Tip #2 - HAVE A PLAN
Tip #3 - DEFINE PRODUCTIVITY
Another reminder: it's okay to NOT hit 100% of your goals every day… just don't put up a zero. Most of the time, consistency is more important than the intensity of your work.
At the end of the day, my hope is that this episode will remind you that even though it's okay to commit yourself to your employer, remember not to leave your own hopes and dreams to die because you are too exhausted to work on yourself when you clock out. If all our best is poured out on the work we do for our jobs, there will never be anything left when we come home to face what really matters -- our personal life.
What other tips can you think of? Let me know!

65% of nurses say they are likely to leave the profession within the next two years.
WHY?! Could it be because many hospital jobs have elements of toxicity?
Today we're talking about the TOXICITY within nursing.
To be clear, when I say toxicity, I'm NOT referring to nursing itself as being toxic. I'm talking about some of the jobs within the profession and the awful reputation they bring - not to mention the harmful effects they have on our health and well-being.
There are many kinds of toxic elements that come from some of our healthcare jobs. I'm going to list them out and I'd like for you to pay close attention to see if you can determine whether your job matches most of these descriptions... if so, you are working at a TOXIC JOB within nursing and it's time to do something about it.
Here's my list of toxic workplace characteristics:
The list goes on and on...
If you can relate to this list, you must do something to fight the toxicity.
Here is my 3-step process: Evaluate, Speak Up, and/or Leave.
Let's go through each one:
First up, EVALUATE: The first step is always self-reflection. Take personal responsibility for your contributions to any toxicity in your life/environment - if any. Then, study the situation and pin-point exactly where the toxic effects are coming from. Is it a certain person at work? A certain system? Try attacking that first! Prayer is always a great first step.
Second, SPEAK UP: As an advocate for yourself and others, you should NEVER keep quiet about toxicity in the workplace. Make sure you go through the appropriate channels to report your issue and do it with dignity and respect for all parties involved. This not only helps you, but those who don't have a strong voice. Remember to expect backlash. Although it can be very difficult to face, doing the right thing is always worth it.
Lastly, LEAVE: After giving it enough time, if you have not seen any changes, maybe it's best for you to move on in peace. Realize that bad environments create bad people. Sometimes, you simply CANNOT afford to stay. This will not only save your sanity, but it will benefit your future career and the relationships you build with patients in your care moving forward.
Be a positive force within healthcare and society.

"Real Nurses" Series: 5 of 5
LOVE: Isn't this word overused? Maybe even overrated?
Today's episode is going to be about how REAL NURSES love life & people. It's part of a 5-part series on what it takes to be a REAL NURSE.
In my opinion, the best nurses have these values/characteristics:
We're going to talk about what love is and what it means to love LIFE & PEOPLE.
I'm sure everyone has heard the phrase "LOVE IS LOVE". Although I get the intention people have when they say that, I've always cringed. I find it kinda stupid and unhelpful because it sounds like a circular definition!
What is love? Can you define it in your own terms? Comment below! Loosely defined, LOVE is the affection felt and action fulfilled when looking out for someone or something.
Do you know how the Bible describes love? It's quite radical:
Read this... 1st Corinthians 13:4-8The Bible even points out that there are different kinds of love.
So how does this relate? And why should nurses love life and people?
As nurses, we deal with people's lives DAY IN, DAY OUT. Let's get the obvious out of the way: the very essence of nursing is to care for the lives of people in our care.
At the end of the day, our main focus, as nurses, is humanitarian. Historically, the foundation of healthcare has always been this way. This is the reason why most hospitals were started by Christian/Religious organizations. Sadly, the humanitarian cause has been corrupted by bad business. But the point remains: our purpose should be humanitarian.
The American Nurses Association's says it this way:
"Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; prevention of illness and injury; facilitation of healing; alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response; and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations."See Reference
But as a nurse, is it a moral obligation to LOVE? To answer this question, we must first identify our moral compass. The place where you derive your morals will determine this.
For Christian nurses, specifically, it's a tall order: LOVE GOD. LOVE LIFE. LOVE PEOPLE. No exceptions. God calls us not only to love the lovable... but to love everyone. Including those that are difficult to love. That's radical. That's unconditional. That's AGAPE love.
This requires a DIVINE power. I'm thankful that through Jesus Christ, we can learn to love others this way. Whether or not you're a Christian: the tender care we show our patient's and their families MATTERS. It's life-changing.
Real nurses love life & people.

"Real Nurses" Series: 4 of 5
According to the American Nurses Association:
"For nearly every indicator, the health of America’s nurses is worse than that of the average American. Nurses are more likely to be overweight, have higher levels of stress, get less than the recommended hours of sleep."Reference - Click Here
Today's episode is going to be about how… REAL NURSES practice what they preach. It's part of a 5-part series on what it takes to be a REAL NURSE.
In my opinion, the best nurses have these values/characteristics:
Here's another crazy statistic!
"A 2016 collaborative study... sought to identify the impact of stress and subsequent coping mechanisms on the overall health of hospital-based nurses.
Many of the nurses surveyed rated their health as good, which the researchers believed is not accurately reflective of their health behaviors and lifestyle."
Reference - Click HereSo what's the problem? A large number of nurses are NOT healthy. Isn't this a sad reality? I've always had a dream that people in healthcare would live the most vibrant and fulfilling lives - marked by health and wellness.
Nobody trusts a cop who breaks the law. Nobody trusts a mechanic who’s car is always breaking down. Nobody trusts a financial advisor who’s broke and homeless. So why would someone trust their life to people who are careless with their own?
Care about what kind of life you lead. Real nurses practice what they preach! If you don't, you can't expect your employer to live up to their mission statement.
So, why are so many nurses living unhealthy lifestyles? We are not being intentional. We are not being consistent. We are not seeking help.
And how can we help fix the problem? Let's make ATOMIC CHANGES every day to set ourselves up for success; let's go back to the fundamentals.
Here are my 2 favorite resources to remind us of healthy fundamentals:

"Real Nurses" Series: 3 of 5
What makes a nurse stand out from the rest? How can one differentiate a nurse from a NURSE? I put together a list of values /characteristics that explains the difference, based on my personal opinion. When I think of the very best nurses out there - the ones I believe should be trusted, they have these characteristics and values!
To keep it short, I boiled it down to 5 things that mark an exceptional nurse:
REAL NURSES…
I've separated each characteristic into it's own separate episode. In this podcast we are discussing the effects of humility on nursing practice: "STAY HUMBLE."
We assume that humility is an automatic attribute of every nurse. But that shouldn't be assumed - in fact, some of us would be offended by some of the words within the very definition of humility.
Humility... Marked by meekness or modesty in behavior, attitude, or spirit; not arrogant or prideful. Showing deferential or submissive respect.
I'd like to suggest that there is a specific reason why humility is foundational in nursing. It greatly affects our practice in 3 major ways.
Before I go into that, I want to uncover what I think is the BIGGEST misconception about humility: People think humility is weakness. But nothing could be further from the truth! Humility positions us for the best life we could possibly have. It equips our mind to get better and better every day. It opens the door for our next opportunity.
Pridefulness brings the opposite of all those things. Pridefulness is this sick lie that you tell yourself in order to hide your insecurity. Pridefulness is deceitful and destructive.
Being humble in no way means you're a pushover. Actually, in some ways, its the opposite. Humility makes you stronger. Now, back to the 3 ways humility affects our practice.
Humility affects our practice because it affects:
Having humility means you don't let pride get in the way of your service or ability to empathize. It means you're careful with how you come across to others and don't play into the hierarchy of the world.
Proverbs 11:2 says...
"When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom."
Humility is key to success in LIFE - let alone nursing!REAL nurses stay humble…
What kind of nurse do you want to be?
What kind of person do you want to be?

"Real Nurses" Series: 2 of 5
What makes a nurse stand out from the rest? How can one differentiate a nurse from a NURSE? When I think of the very best nurses out there - the ones I believe should be trusted, they have these characteristics and values!

REAL NURSES…
I've separated each characteristic into it's own separate episode.
In this podcast we are discussing how to "PUT IN THE WORK".
A sure way to become the enemy on your team is to BE THE LAZY ONE. Some people think nursing is an easy profession because many of us work 3 days a week. But that's definitely not the case - on the contrary! Nurses are some of the hardest working people in healthcare.
Nursing is NOT for people who have no desire to grow, learn, and achieve something meaningful in life. It was always meant for people who PUT IN THE WORK.Honestly, nothing in healthcare was designed for people who hate hard work.
Lazy nurses are crappy nurses and put patients' lives at risk. Mediocrity is evil.
We must be intentional. This means doing the things that will improve our practice and avoiding things that stunt our growth.
REAL nurses put in the work…"What if I hate my current job as a nurse?!"
Trust me when I tell you, I KNOW HOW THAT FEELS. The first job I got after graduating from nursing school was rough. Although I learned A LOT, I was not happy as a full-time bedside ICU nurse. I spent years struggling with the thought of growing where I was in my career. Here's what I would have told myself if I could travel back in time: YOU HAVE OPTIONS! DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF!Nursing the most versatile job in healthcare. This is one of the most beautiful things about our profession. You can easily pivot into a different area of nursing if you are not fulfilled with your current job.
It's CRITICAL that youdetermine if the reason why you shy away from growth at your workplace is because of your character (DOWNRIGHT LAZY) or if it's because the kind of work is highly unsatisfying and frustrating. How can you expect to PUT IN THE WORK and do your BEST?
Also, putting in the work doesn't just mean get busy. Intensity of work is not as important as purposeful work. There's a difference between SMART and STUPID work. Make sure your motive for hard work is based on it's positive impact on the future. Will it get you closer to a desired result in this life?
Sometimes we must endure hard work - yes, even work that we hate - in order to arrive to our destination.
Work is GOOD, not evil. In fact, the Bible says: "In all labor there is profit..." (Proverbs 14:23). Let's make sure we have a healthy perspective on work and the benefits it can produce in our lives.
REAL nurses put in the work…
What kind of nurse do you want to be?
What kind of person do you want to be?

"Real Nurses" Series: 1 of 5
4 MILLION nurses nationwide. "The most trusted profession" for 20 years in a row, according to recent surveys. But wait! Who are these nurses? Can you trust the WHOLE profession? Are all nurses created equal in trustworthiness?
No. In fact, I suggest you never trust a profession - or any other for that matter. Here's who you should trust: PEOPLE.
So, what makes a nurse stand out from the rest? How can one differentiate a nurse from a NURSE? I put together a list of values /characteristics that explains the difference, based on my personal opinion. When I think of the very best nurses out there - the ones I believe should be trusted, they have these characteristics and values!

For this series, I've separated each characteristic into it's own separate episode.
In this podcast we are going to focus on "RESPECT THE PROFESSION".
AS NURSES, we respect our profession when:
Let your work speak for itself.
Let it be rooted on unbiased evidence based practice.
Let your words be true and always speak with a loving heart.
Let people have the freedom to make decisions for themselves
This is how you respect the nursing profession.
What kind of nurse do you want to be?
What kind of person do you want to be?

I am not a psychologist or a therapist - HOWEVER... if you apply what I'm going to say in this podcast, I promise it will help every single one of us.
In this episode I'm talking about ANXIETY! Although it affects some of us more than others, it affects all of us in some way - mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. You've felt it before the first day of nursing school, during clinicals, and especially before taking the NCLEX exam. In fact, even after working years as a nurse, some of us STILL feel it before a shift.
You've likely heard of the common interventions for dealing with an anxiety attack:
These might be helpful in some ways, but they are not good enough alone. This is because they are all REACTIVE - interventions designed for when anxiety has already hit us hard. In this podcast, I want to take a different approach: Let's talk about ways to attack anxiety even before it starts!
First thing we have to do is UNDERSTAND **anxiety.
Anxiety is NOT the same thing as stress.
Stress is rational.
Anxiety is irrational.**
Another thing to note is that there's a major difference between clinical anxiety & normal anxiety. Yes… I said "normal"! Experiencing at least some anxiety is very normal. For the purpose of this podcast, I will NOT be focusing on clinically anxiety. An anxiety disorder requires very specific, individualized treatment.
Here are my three ways to fight anxiety:
Particularly in a profession like NURSING - where, for some of us, our patient's very lives are unstable and uncertain - it's so important to be rooted in peace and truth. As NURSES, we have and will always experience some level of stress and anxiety. Some of us are shackled to it and feel like there is no escape - but it doesn't have to be that way. ANXIETY DOESN'T HAVE TO BE YOUR REALITY.
Maybe YOU aren't the one who struggles with this on a daily basis. But what will you do to help the coworker, family, or friend that does?We can do something about it today. Take action - if not for your own life, do it for someone else's.Book Recommendation:
