In order to revive the Audio Drama Culture and to also retell the Popular Khasi Folk Tales, Red FM Shillong is all set to launch the 1st Ever Khasi Podcast that can bring about awareness and education to the mass and especially the New Generation about the Popular Khasi Folk Tales that have got a lot of grace, humour, moral, history and integrity.
Two birds KA SOHLYNGEM and U RYNNIAW were madly in love with each other. But sadly
their beautiful love story tragically ended due to the disapproval by their parents. The
reason being that KA SOHLYNGEM comes from a poor family whereas U RYNNIAW comes
from a Rich and wealthy Family that has already arranged a girl for his Marriage but
ironically he rejects the idea.

This tale can be described as a Horror with a twist. We often hear monsters killing their
victims in a gruesome manner but in this case, this mythical creature of a Monster told in
this tale has his funny side meaning, he does the opposite that is, he tickles and harasses
people instead till they lose consciousness. They say that people could hear his shrieks and
monstrous noises whenever they pass by and he also has a tendency to annoy, tease and
tickle people.
In this story two young girls were caught in this frightful situation but one of the sisters was
brave enough to stand her ground against the monster by poking him with a hot iron rod
that made him disappear and turn into a vine tree which is similar to a trivet.

Back in the olden days when animals could speak to each other, they would often meet up
for commercial purposes at a rendezvous “KA IEW LURI LURA” (Market of Chaos). Legend
has it that the animals had trampled on fermented beans which was sold by a dog who was
allegedly accused of selling excretion. The remaining paste of the fermented beans lingered
on the animals’ feet which they believe that it has helped the dogs to easily track the
animals during hunting because of the smell.
Due to this unfortunate event, the dog was eventually despised by his fellow animals which
forced him to beg from a human to allow him to live with him forever.

Whenever you visit U Mawnguid Briew at Mawbeh which is a bit far from Shillong, you will
notice a scratch on its back. The reason for this is because this Rock had swallowed two
children for no reason and therefore the scratches on the Rock’s back was from the
children’s tiny hands who struggled to escape from its grasp.

In the days of old when man and nature lived in harmony, there were two great mountains U
SYMPER AND U KYLLANG who often fought with each other to show their strength to outdo
one another. One day this clash of the two egos let to mass destruction of Nature and its
surroundings. The fight lasted for hours until U SYMPER fled to another far off land which to
this day left a scar and gaping holes on his body.

In a small village at Sohra, there lived a Giant who in the beginning was a decent being and
was loved and appreciated by all. But arrogance changed him and made him wicked. From
then on he made many enemies who despised him. As a villain he loved wreaking havoc and
destroyed anything and everything in his path. Ultimately led to his own demise when
people around him had had enough of his cruelty. So they set up a trap by poisoning him
with scrap metal in his food which killed him in the end.

They say “All that glitters is not gold” is best suited to describe a tale about a stag who was
enchanted by the beauty of the Khasi Land. He then left everything behind and ran away to
this mesmerizing place. But upon reaching, he was suddenly struck with an Arrow by a
Hunter and he was dead on the spot. The mother was deeply saddened by his death and
began to mourn in a way that it became become habitual among mourners in the funeral to
this day.

During the age of innocence, the khasi people believed that there was a divine connection
between the heavens and the creatures on earth. This is a tragic story about a peacock who
initially fell for the sun’s beauty but in the end betrayed and left her for the earth’s grand
luxuries which turned out to be ordinary mustard flowers upon reaching earth.

This is a dark and tragic tale about three inseparable friends U KWAI,U TYMPEW, KA SHUN
who never wanted to hurt each other. But unfortunately poverty led the three friends to kill
themselves tragically just to preserve their dignity and Honour. This Incident had taught the
Khasi race to find better means of entertaining friends, relatives or visitors whenever they
come for a visit.
Then came the idea of introducing Betle nut, Betle Leave and Slake Lime as an offering to
visitors in order preserve the honour despite of being poor.

Likai, a widow with a beautiful daughter lived happily together at Rangjyrteh until she remarried a man who completely ruined her life after she had learned that he had brutally killed her daughter that ultimately made her plunged into the tallest waterfall that became known to this day as “NOHKALIKAI” which literally means “The Fall of Likai”.
