The Tafuna High School JROTC Robotics Team has returned home victorious after competing in a high-caliber robotics competition in San Diego, proudly representing American Samoa on an international stage. Led by Major Galoia, alongside Master Sergeant Police and Sergeant First Class Lisa Lisa, the team showcased exceptional skill and determination, proving that local talent can compete at the highest levels. In a recent interview with 93KHJ, Major Galoia expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the community. “We couldn’t have achieved this without the dedication of our cadets and the unwavering support of our instructors, school leadership, and sponsors,” they said. “This competition was a game-changer, and it has inspired more students to get involved in robotics.” The cadets, including team captain Filiga Tufa, co-captain Francis Ah Vui (Primary Designer, Engineer, and Lead Driver), and engineers Josephine Stanley and Tufa, excelled in networking with other teams, developing innovative strategies, and refining their robotics skills. Also contributing significantly to the team’s performance were Olatalosaga Saovao (Assistant Driver and Engineer) and Benaiah Penitali (Assistant Programmer). Their journey was made possible through the generous funding provided by the 8th Brigade, which covered airfare, accommodations, and meals. The team also received invaluable support from local sponsors, including Paramount Builders, Pago Pago Trading Company among others. “Our team has worked tirelessly since August of last year, designing and refining our robots using CAD software,” said Cadet Stanley. “This experience has not only enhanced our technical skills but also our teamwork and problem-solving abilities.” Looking ahead, the Tafuna JROTC program is preparing for an upcoming aerial drone competition in Reno, Nevada. If successful, the team will qualify for the all-services aerial drone competition in Batesville, Mississippi, where they will compete against Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Army, and Space Force teams. The Tafuna JROTC team extends heartfelt appreciation to the Department of Health, school administration, and the governor’s office for their ongoing support. Their recent return to American Samoa was met with a warm welcome, underscoring the pride and admiration of the local community for their accomplishments.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in collaboration with the American Samoa Government and the Department of Public Works, is conducting the Tafuna Flood Risk Management Study to address persistent flooding issues in the Tafuna floodplain. The Corps has announced a public meeting to be held on Friday at 5 p.m., inviting residents to learn more about the study and participate in the discussion. The study aims to assess and develop potential solutions for flood management in affected areas, including Mapusaga, Faleniu, Mesepa, Malaeimi, Tafuna, and Nu’uuli. The goal is to finalize a recommended flood risk management plan that could receive congressional authorization and funding for future construction. “The public meeting will provide an overview of the study and highlight key data collection efforts that require community support,” said Eva Liusala, a senior planner and cultural liaison with the Army Corps of Engineers’ Pacific Ocean Division. “We encourage residents to attend and share their input.” One critical aspect of the study is a structure inventory survey scheduled between February 8 and February 13, which involves collecting data on buildings within the floodplain. This survey will include details such as construction quality, materials, building type, and elevation. The Army Corps of Engineers assures residents that this will be a non-invasive, street-level assessment and that all data collected will be used solely for the study without tying it to personal information. Additionally, a geotechnical survey will be conducted later in the summer to analyze soil conditions along the various streams. The Corps, in coordination with the Office of Samoan Affairs and the Department of Public Works, will be reaching out to village mayors and landowners for permission to conduct this survey. “This is an opportunity for the community to better understand how flood risks are evaluated and how we can work together to develop effective mitigation strategies,” said Nick Emilio, lead planner for the study. “We are committed to ensuring transparency and collaboration throughout the process.” The Corps encourages all interested individuals, particularly residents of flood-prone areas, to attend the meeting. Residents who prefer not to have their properties included in the survey may opt out by informing the project team during the meeting or when surveyors are in their neighborhoods. New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) has arrived in American Samoa for a week-long recruitment trip, aiming to connect with prospective student-athletes and academic scholars. Head Football Coach Kurt Taufa‘asau, Linebackers Coach Ben Langford, and Athletic Director Cheryl Trujillo are leading the initiative, visiting high schools across the island to scout talent and introduce students to the opportunities available at NMHU. During an exclusive interview with 93KHJ, Coach Taufa‘asau, a former NFL player for the Oakland Raiders, shared insights into NMHU’s football program and his transition from assistant coach to head coach. “It’s a big responsibility, but we’re excited about the direction of the program,” said Taufa‘asau, who, along with his staff, started the season with 114 players and currently has 82 athletes training in the spring. Recruitment efforts are not limited to athletics. NMHU, a four-year public university in northern New Mexico, offers a wide range of academic programs, including associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees across disciplines such as Business, Media & Technology, Education, Social Work, and Arts & Sciences. “We want to showcase the academic pathways available for students here in American Samoa,” said Trujillo. “Our goal is to provide opportunities that foster both athletic and academic success.” The NMHU team has been engaging with local athletes via social media ahead of their visit, setting up in-person meetings with prospective students. Their itinerary includes visits to Tafuna, Fagaitua, and Leone High Schools, among others, giving students a chance to explore pathways to college football and higher education. Beyond athletics, NMHU has a growing Polynesian community, with several Samoan and Tongan athletes already part of their programs. The university also boasts a diverse international student population from regions such as Jamaica and Africa. The event will take place at Diwa in Tafuna, with doors opening at 5 PM and the show starting at 6 PM. This exciting concert aims to raise $80,000 to fund two major trips: sending under-16 and under-12 baseball teams to New Zealand and the 64 Volleyball Club to Hawaii in January 2025. Click here to support The American Samoa Rowing Association (ASRA) is raising funds to send a team of young men to represent American Samoa at the Coastal Rowing championships in Barletta, Italy, this october! Coastal Rowing is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. ASRA sent a team to the 2019 World Championships in Hong Kong but rowing in American Samoa came to a halt due to covid. ASRA is now back at it and our young rowers/athletes need competition to continue to develop. Is Coastal Rowing an Olympic Sport? Not yet! But the IOC told World Rowing about plans to add coastal rowing events to the games that will be played in Los Angeles in 2028 and the 4th Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2026 in Dakar, Senegal! So to help us prepare for what lies ahead, we need to get our athletes to international competitions so they can learn, gain experience, and build towards these future competition. This three-day workshop, scheduled to take place from September 18th to 20th, will bring together individuals interested in contributing to a more sustainable future by learning the art of transforming plastic waste into unique crafts and jewelry. Event Details: Date: September 18th - 20th, 2023 Time: 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM daily Venue: Power Generation Conference Room, ASPA Compound, Tafuna This initiative aims to address the pressing issue of plastic waste while promoting a circular economy and creative solutions. The training workshop will be conducted by visiting experts from Fiji who specialize in plastic repurposing techniques. Participants will gain hands-on experience in transforming discarded plastic bottles into beautiful and useful creations. Workshop Highlights: Required Materials: Participants are required to bring a ceramic plate to rest the soldering iron tool, and a sufficient number of clean plastic bottles (approximately 10-20 bottles per day). Crafting Techniques: Attendees will be guided through the entire crafting process, including tools and safety, cutting, and shaping, and assembling. Exhibition: The final day of the workshop will showcase the participants' creations, allowing them to proudly display their unique crafts and jewelry. 7/19/23 - For the past two weeks, American Samoa has been host to an invisible expedition happening in the air above Tutuila. Ham radio operators James Gallo (KB2FMH), Hal Turley (W8HC) and Yuri Sushkin (N3QQ) established temporary radio operations in American Samoa for the purpose of making contact with other operators all over the world. Read more about their expedition on the official KH8RRC website. 93KHJ's John Raynar interviewed James and Hal on the Samoan Sunrise morning show on Wednesday 7/19/23. While in American Samoa, 93KHJ's Joey Cummings hosted the group and acted as their local tour guide. During breaks in their busy broadcasting schedule, Cummings took them to eat at favorite local spots. In addition, the group spent an afternoon touring the National Park of American Samoa before having dinner at Tisa's Barefoot Bar. The group was also willing to lend a helping hand. When two pilots attempting to complete a circumnavigation of the globe in their single engine Cessna landed in American Samoa on Tuesday, the inquired if there were any experts on HF radio equipment. Hal and James accompanied the pilots to their airport after their radio interview. There, there were able to successfully troubleshoot the radio equipment. Hal wrote about this encounter on his Facebook page. Hal and James left American Samoa on Wednesday 7/19/23. In the interview, they discuss plans for an upcoming Swains Island ham radio expedition.
July 19, 2023 - A small single-engine plane landed at Tafuna International Airport on Tuesday. The plane, carrying two people, arrived from Fiji and is in American Samoa for rest and refueling before traveling onward to Honolulu. The pilots Peter Teahen and John Ockenfels are raising awareness for polio eradication by attempting a rare feat in the aviation world; piloting a single engine aircraft all the way around the globe! This 10-minute interview was conducted by News Director Monica Miller. Read two news articles Monica published about the mission here and here. After the interview, Peter and John invited 93KHJ staff to sign their mission flags. In addition, the pair made an educational presentation to the Rotary Club of Pago at their weekly meeting. So I visit all of those. And it's amazing the good work that these Rotary clubs are doing within their communities. I know rotary is well known for community service work worldwide. 4/3/23 - Casuallen Atuatasi and Tulimalefoi Vaofanua visited the 93KHJ's studios to talk about the Puipui Malu Manatu project. They expressed gratitude to all the participants that attended the Brain Health Fair (BHF) which was held at the beginning of March. It was a weeklong event hosted by research team- Puipui Malu Manatu and a visiting research team – Natives Engaged in Alzheimer’s Research - to understand and promote brain health in American Samoa. What was the outcome of the Brain Health Fair? We were able to collect assessments from nearly 300 participants (293 to be exact). The fair allowed participants to engage in a series of interactive assessments that examined their social habits, health history, physical abilities, and brain performance to understand their cognitive status. Now that the Brain Health Fair is over, are you still looking for participants for Puipui Malu Manatu? Yes! Our research study is ongoing, and we have open enrollment for eligible community members to register and participate. With that in mind, we are also looking forward to contacting the participants of the BHF, for the next steps of the research study. Is Puipui Malu Manatu having any other events soon? To celebrate, the commission is promoting events which address Samoan translations, media language, responsibilities, curriculum and teaching. The Samoan language is an essential component of Samoan cultural identity, and its preservation is crucial for the community's well-being. The language is the primary means of communication for Samoans, and it has been passed down through generations, carrying with it the cultural values and traditions of the Samoan people. Samoan language preservation is vital because it ensures that future generations of Samoans will be able to communicate with their elders and learn about their history and culture. It also helps to maintain the distinct Samoan identity and promotes pride in Samoan heritage. In addition, preserving the Samoan language can help to bridge the gap between different generations and promote understanding and respect for diverse cultures. The Samoan language is a valuable part of the world's linguistic heritage, and its preservation is crucial for the continuity of the Samoan community and its cultural traditions.
