Stay On the Trail toward a Deeper Walk with God with father-daughter duo Marcus & Stephanie Warner. Listen in on conversations about important models and concepts that inform the way we live the Christian life. We’ll talk philosophy, theology, and practice related to heart-focused discipleship.
What does every Christian need to understand about the occult?
The word "occult" means "hidden" or "secret." Occult practices seek secret knowledge and power from sources other than God.
This week we dig into Chapter Six of What Every Believer Should Know About Spiritual Warfare by Marcus Warner. We look at what the occult is, three key reasons people seek it (power, knowledge, attachment), the danger of blending beliefs that don't belong together, how to deal with participation in the occult (R.E.D.), a case study from Judges 17-18, and more. Also, stay tuned! We're wrapping up this series next week with a look at the Role of Experience in spiritual warfare.
The goal of this series is to equip you with a spiritual warfare first aid kit, so you can function with more freedom on your deeper walk with God. Check out the free discussion guide in the links below!

Ready for some practical hope with spiritual warfare?
This week we dig into Chapter Four of What Every Believer Should Know About Spiritual Warfare by Marcus Warner.
We're walking step by step through the CCC-C process of removing enemy permission: 1) Confess, 2) Cancel, 3) Command, 4) Commit. We're doing a deeper dive (using SOUL-L) into what gives ground to the enemy in the first place and what the remedy is to each area.
For instance, if the issue giving permission is sin, then the remedy is repentance of that sin, and we're going to talk about what repentance is and is not. May this be an episode for you of good news and practical understanding.
The goal of this series is to equip you with a spiritual warfare first aid kit, so you can function with more freedom on your deeper walk with God. Check out the free discussion guide in the links below!

We were born into the middle of a great, cosmic conflict that affects every area of life. As Christians, we really only have three options. We can live in fear, in ignorance, or we can learn to fight.
Where in the Bible does it say, "Ignore the devil, and he will leave you alone"? Nowhere! It warns us repeatedly, "Be alert! Be prepared! Put on your armor! Resist!" These are not passive words. We are called to be intentional and diligent in preparing ourselves for battle. This book study is meant to equip you on that journey.
This week we dig into Chapter One of What Every Believer Should Know About Spiritual Warfare by Marcus Warner.

Could the monster in the closet be real? How can we help children who see scary things?
How does our worldview inform what we believe is possible?
Today we’re continuing our prequel discussion of spiritual warfare before launching our next book study.
Last episode we addressed the reality of so many Christians who think spiritual warfare is not something to concern everyday believers. And it’s understandable. For many people, normal life doesn’t seem to be infested with demons. And honestly, others find it easy to see a demon or nephilim behind every rock. So we’re trying to help contextualize what we mean by “spiritual warfare.”
In this On the Trail episode, we get into some niche topics like sleep paralyis, haunted houses, and UFOs. We're also talking about how to help children when they experience spiritual warfare and looking broadly at the impact of worldview on how we interact with life and spiritual realities.
Next week we start a new book study: What Every Believer Should Know About Spiritual Warfare. You don't need an advanced degree in spiritual warfare. But just like knowing that washing your hands helps against germs or how to put on a bandaid, there's some spiritual first aid every Christian should understand.

Is spiritual warfare an elective for advanced Christians?
Maybe you hear "spiritual warfare" and think "paranormal activity." Maybe you've been a Christian for a long time and haven’t had to deal with spiritual warfare. How important is it really?
Many Christians feel like they see no evidence of spiritual warfare around them. They might undersand that cosmic realities exist and intercessory prayer can work, but otherwise, Christians who believe in spiritual warfare are just cooky or overly mystic. How does a person's life actually change at all by knowing about spiritual warfare?
In this On the Trail episode, we look at this question: Is Spiritual Warfare Optional? This episode starts a two-part intro to our next book study: What Every Believer Should Know About Spiritual Warfare. You don't need an advanced degree in spiritual warfare. But just like knowing that washing your hands helps against germs or how to put on a bandaid, there is some spiritual first aid every Christian should understand.

"Christianity is not a religion. It's a relationship." What does this adage actually mean?
John 15 gives a picture of this when Jesus describes our relationship to Him as branches attached to a vine. Relationships are attachments. Christianity is about forming an attachment with Jesus Christ, then spending the rest of our lives walking deeper with Him. And if we want to be relationally engaged with God, it makes sense that we'd want to know and cooperate with how He designed us to function relationally.
In this On the Trail episode, we discuss Building Bounce Chapter Eight: Connecting with God,where we talk about our faith being in God not the process, listening prayer, discernment, and lifestyle. We also unpack the V.C.R. tool (Validate, Comfort, Recover).

Did you know your brain has its own propaganda department? The left side of your brain can be thought of as your narrative engine. Part of its job is to explain life.
Our beliefs can have a profound impact on our bodies, our emotions, and our behavior. It is no wonder that the Bible has so much to say about meditating on God’s Word, renewing the mind, repenting, thinking about what is true, practicing gratitude, studying, and guarding what our minds think and believe.
In this On the Trail episode, we discuss Building Bounce Chapter Six: Beliefs, where we talk about the art of propaganda and the battle for our minds, processing how to resist the devil, replace thoughts, and rhyme our thoughts with God's.

We've reached the close of our 3-2-1 Bible Study Method series, and the topic of the episode is APPLICATION. The goal isn't to master the Bible but for the Bible to master us. Once we've done the work of observation and interpretation, it's time to apply what we've learned.
In this episode, we're looking at three phases of application: the message to the original audience, the universal principles, and the personal applications. A simple way of remembering these phases is THEN, ALWAYS, NOW.
We also discuss a fourth lens to the interpretive process: the effect of Fear and Joy Bonds with God. And we work through two examples from the Bible as well as offer some next steps for your Bible Study journey.

In this episode, we peer through three lenses of biblical interpretation. Each lens represents a phillosophy of sorts for how to approach interpretation, now that we've made our observations (see prior episodes). Lens #1 is INTENT. Understanding the author's intended message is key to accurate interpretation. Lens #2 is INERRANCY. Understanding that the Bible is true is key to accurate interpretation. Lens #3 is INQUIRY. Asking 'why' is essential to the interpretive process.

"Repetition" is about recognizing the strategic recurrence of words, concepts, locations, and more that serve to highlight both what is important in the text and also can point to structure.
"Introductions" (+ Conclusions) often hold direct messages from the author explaining the meaning of the unfolding text. We also end on a prayerful note in light of tumultuous current events. Please pray with us, seek God's face, and take courage.

Listen in on conversations about important models and concepts that inform the way we live the Christian life. We talk philosophy, theology, and practical issues related to heart-focused discipleship.
In this episode, we continue our discussion of the 3-2-1 Bible Study Method, focusing on the principles of selection and arrangement in biblical texts. We explore how understanding these concepts can help us practice interpretation with an aim to find the author's intended message. Our conversation also touches on the importance of recognizing biases and worldviews, using the books of Samuel-Kings and Chronicles to illustrate case studies where selection to find the author's intended message. And we've got some practical advice for readers to apply these techniques in your own Bible study.
In this episode, we introduce the 3-2-1 Bible Study Method: 3 steps, 2 strategies, and 1 checklist for effective Bible study. This week we are giving special attention to the three steps: Observation, Interpretation, and Application.
We emphasize the importance of understanding the author's intended message by looking for clues in our observations, paying attention to how each step builds off of the next, and staying in conversation with God throughout our study.
Our conversation also covers how to lead Bible studies using this method, ensuring that participants engage with the text meaningfully.

If there is one bias we definitely want to know, it's God's. We believe God is the author of reality. As such, we we want to see the world, ourselves, and our situations as He sees everything. What better place to start tuning our worldview lenses than a study of His Word?
In this episode, we discuss the WHY of Bible study, the role of the Holy Spirit, and how this all fits into heart-focused discipleship. We emphasize the need for understanding the author's intended message, and, to get you started with your study, we look at the significance of genre, selection, and arrangement for how an author puts the text together.

All of these are common ways we give the enemy permission to a place in our lives.
A fifth common way the enemy claims ground is through permissions given by people in our lineage. We’re looking at all five of these areas in this week’s compilation episode.
This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 42-46.

In the wilderness, we see them enroll in boot camp to tear down their old identity and learn their new one. And in Canaan we see them building maturity and living out of freedom.

Now that we have completed the Exodus journey, learned our boot camp lessons, and entered the promised land, it's time to walk out our victorious life in the Spirit.
In this episode, we're looking at four case studies for walking out the SLOW Model in the book of Joshua, and we remember those four battles with the acrostic J.O.S.H.

The wilderness is over! Joshua has taken charge, and it’s time to leave the manna behind and live off the fruit of the land God has for them.
The lessons of boot camp are all coming together in Joshua. Victory comes when you fight the battles God asks you to fight how and when He tells you. Moving into the promised land doesn’t mean the battles end. It means fighting battles that matter and doing it God’s way.If there’s a formula for success, it’s Trust + Obey = Victory, and the ‘how’ is the SLOW Model.
As we look at Joshua as a model for living the victorious Christian life, we invite you to join us on the trail!

When we find ourselves stuck with consequences we can’t change, are we going to be angry and bitter about it? Are we going to seek God in the midst of it?
In this episode, we are breaking down camp and setting out with the people of Israel toward the promised land. But when the people discover that the promised land is not only flowing with milk and honey but also filled with giants, they panic.
Joshua and Caleb beg the people to trust and obey God to fulfill His promises and take care of them. But the people show they did not learn the lessons of boot camp, and they end up spending an extra 38 years in the wilderness.
What God ultimately wants is not for us to follow a life of principles but a life of relationship. In this relationship, God says, ‘I will be there; you can trust Me; and I will get you through this.’ If there is a “formula” or a principle, it is to go find God, see what He wants to do, and do that.
As we head into this next phase of the journey, we begin to unpack the model for what walking victoriously in the Spirit looks like.

When we’re on a healing journey, it is easy to feel dirty and unclean. But Christ has done the work to make us clean so that the Holy Spirit can live within us, so we can have relationship with God.
Atonement is core to God’s solution to fixing the sin problem. It addresses the sin problem not by ending immorality but by giving us the ability to be in the presence of God.
We see atonement enacted in both the Old and New Testaments, and while there is a lot of overlap, they are not the same level of atonement.
In this episode, we are looking at the Day of Atonement, exploring some of the similarities and differences between the Old and New covenants, from the level of sin covered to spiritual warfare and more.

The healing journey we’ve been on with the people of Israel has been a process of dismantling their old identity and creating a new one.
This involves creating a new culture. With a new culture comes a new Law — rituals, protocols, and principles for interacting with the unseen realm, living together, caring for one another, and worshiping God.
In this episode, we’re entering the levitical side of boot camp.

We have been on a victory journey with the people of Israel, one where they learn to die to their old identity, rise to their new identity, walk with God, and live in community. They’re about to leave their boot camp in the wilderness and head toward the promised land.
Alas, something tragic happens before they break camp. It’s not fun to look at the hard things, but in today’s episode, we’re looking at the incident of the Golden Calf.
The Golden Calf was a direct contradiction to everything God had been teaching them thus far—the freedom, the covenant, the Tabernacle, etc. There are natural and necessary consequences that follow this incident. It gets a little scary, a little intense.
But in the end we see that God’s purposes stand. He’s going to get the people as a whole to the promised land. He is a God of justice and compassion, and He invites relationship and intercession.

We don’t have to be whole & healed to have intimacy with God.
Last week, we looked at the Mountain of God as a model of covenant relationship. This week, we get to watch God provide the next, incredible step toward a lifestyle of intimacy with Him.
God is not waiting at the top of the mountain for us to get our act together and come up to Him. He is coming straight into the center of our mess to journey with us.
In many ways, all of the amazing things God has done during the Exodus event has been to bring His people to this moment: the Tabernacle. It’s a place of intimacy at the center of His people that is mobile and ready for the journey.
God’s incarnational purposes are made known from Genesis to Revelation, and this Tabernacle Theology is a beautiful picture of His desire to be in an active, tangible, walking relationship with His people.
He is right there in the center of our brokenness, giving provision for being in His presence despite the juxtaposition of His purity and our uncleanness.

We’ve made it to camp!
During God’s two-year boot camp for the people of Israel, about a year was spent in one location: the Mountain of God.

God always has a plan, and He is not afraid of chaos.
The story of Exodus contains many lessons and symbols. Some include parallels of the deep pain that launches a healing journey and parallels we see in the Gospel (e.g., Pharaoh as a symbol of sin, Slavery as a symbol of bondage to sin).

God wants to walk with us. In this week’s episode, we continue discussing the Incarnation by looking at this incredible truth that God wants us to be in relationship with Him. This is a listening, conversational relationship characterized by trust and obedience, where He seeks us and we seek Him.
God understands our weakness.
The incarnation paved the way for Jesus Christ to become our High Priest, so we can approach God boldly and find the mercy and grace we need. What does it mean for Jesus Christ to be our High Priest? (And who was Melchizedek?) We discuss this and more in today’s episode.

We've been talking about who the world, the flesh, and the devil say you are. This week we’re moving into the Kingdom perspective!
What is the New Covenant, and how does it inform not only how we understand our own identity but God’s as well?
We’ll be taking the next several episodes to dig deeper into the richness that is our identity in Christ, laying out the practical, theological realities imbued in our relationship with God.
Are you believing a lie about yourself? About God? We’ve been talking about how the world, the flesh, and the devil try to shape us. In this episode, we look at how the devil uses deception to affect our identity.
What pockets of pain are shaping you?
No one goes through life without experiencing pain, and that pain comes in all shapes and sizes. We can have pockets of pain from the bad that happens to us, from the absence of the good that we need, and from the way we compare ourselves to others.
The world’s wounds affect our beliefs about ourselves. In this episode, we press into how the Kosmos tries to shape us.
How do the Kingdom and the Kosmos inform our identity?
The Kingdom teaches us how to see reality, God, and ourselves as God sees. In Christ, the Kingdom gives us our New Covenant identity.
The Kosmos involves the world, the flesh, and the devil working together to give us an identity.
In this episode, we begin unpacking the Kosmos with a look at how the world and the flesh conspire to trap us in pecking order systems and comparison games.
You are not beyond repair. There is hope for you and for your children to grow and repair your identity formation for your whole life. Last episode we talked about attachment-based identity. This episode, we’re pushing into the hope of joyful identity, looking at childhood development and the possibility for growth and repair in adults.

In this episode, we look at Scripture and brain science, digging into the fascinating idea of how the brain forms its perception of self through three faces.
God designed us to know ourselves based on relational identity. Isn’t that amazing?
Time for a new series! We’re looking at personal identity formation from brain science and biblical realities. Why does identity matter? How did God design us to form our identity? What does the Bible teach us about our identity? What can we do to overcome obstacles and repair holes that keep us from living out of our true identity? We’ll be looking at these questions and more as we embark into this new topic.

When emotions are dragging, there is an amygdala to soothe.
In this episode we finish our discussion about how to tame the amygdala and return to joy when we find ourselves trapped in one of the big six negative emotions.
We’re continuing our joy series with a little brain science. When something triggers the amygdala as “personal,” it sends out a signal of good, bad, or scary. If bad or scary is signaled, it triggers one of six emotions: sadness, shame, disgust, despair, anger, or fear.
For the next two episodes, we are talking about how to tame the amygdala and return to joy when we find ourselves trapped in one of the big six negative emotions.
Would you describe your inner world as joyful?
Whether conscious of it or not, most of us live out of an inner world of fear or joy. Last episode we talked about tearing down that inner fear house.
In this episode, we are talking about building an inner joy house. Building a joy house can also be thought of as growing resilience.
This episode recaps the ABCs of Building Bounce and introduces an overview of the acrostic from The 4 Habits of Joy-Filled People - CASA: calming, appreciating, storytelling, and attacking toxic thinking.
Let’s tear down the house of fear and build a house of joy. Last episode we introduced Joy Bonds. Our brains are designed to run on the fuel of joy, but they can default to fear. In this episode we’re looking at the counterpart—fear bonds.
A joy-filled life is possible. Let’s talk about how to cultivate one.

Did your ancestors open the door to the devil?
We are wrapping up our series on the acrostic SOUL-L, which looks at five common areas where the devil claims ground in our lives and how to reclaim that surrendered ground.
Today’s episode addresses lineage. Sometimes the enemy has permission to work in our lives because of the doors our ancestors opened to him. Sin has generational consequences.
What does this mean from a biblical and spiritual warfare perspective? How do you protect yourself and future generations?
Can believing a lie give the devil permission to my life? We are in the midst of looking at five common areas where the devil claims ground in our lives and how to reclaim that surrendered ground. Today’s episode looks at lies we believe. The devil is the “father of lies” (John 8:44). When we believe Satan’s lies over God’s truth, it’s like shaking hands with the devil and saying, “You are right, and God is wrong.” The remedy for a lie is to replace it with truth. How do we do that?
We are in the midst of looking at five main areas where the devil claims ground in our lives and how to reclaim that surrendered ground. Today's episode looks at unforgiveness. The remedy for unforgiveness is forgiveness. In this episode we talk about what forgiveness is and what it is not.
If sin is like leaving your front door unlocked for the enemy, the occult is like throwing open the garage door and hosting a block party.
We are in the midst of looking at five main areas where the devil claims ground in our lives. The goal is to help us know where to revoke permissions and use our authority to reclaim that surrendered ground. These five areas can be remembered with the acrostic SOUL-L.
In today's episode we are looking at the "O" - occult. How do we recognize it? How do we deal with it?
This is a big topic, but we've got some principles, some stories, and, of course, an acrostic for you.
For the next few episodes we are looking at five main areas where the devil claims ground in our lives. These five areas can be remembered with the acrostic SOUL-L: Sin, the Occult, Unforgiveness, Lies we believe, and Lineage. Today's episode gives the overview of these five areas and then starts unpacking Sin.
