Taiwanica is a podcast made for those who are interested in hearing the cultural differences between the USA and Taiwan.
These topics are discussed between a married couple: Eric (American) and Anita (Taiwanese). They have lived together in both the USA and Taiwan for years and have been exposed to very many culture shocks that they wish to compare and contrast with you!
The loyal listener.
So please relax and enjoy!
Also, please share this with anyone who you might think would be interested in listening to these topics.
Taiwanica's Mission
Taiwanica’s Mission Taiwanica
Our mission is of course to be able to help people who are interested in understanding more about Taiwan and the USA.
But it is not just that. Both Anita and I know how hard it is as a Taiwanese and as a foreigner to make friends with one another. There is a lot of hesitation in the air because of cultural differences despite the fact that we know A LOT of foreigners who wish to meet Taiwanese people and vice versa.
So, we at Taiwanica want to be the bridge to bring some commonality and give you some ideas and knowledge; to make the next time these groups of people to meet a whole lot easier and fun!

Do you ever feel like you should be farther ahead by now?
Maybe you have goals, ideas, and a sense that you are capable of more, but you still feel stuck. You procrastinate, compare yourself to others, question your timing, or wonder if you are climbing the wrong ladder.
In this episode of Taiwanica, Eric explores why feeling stuck is not always about laziness or lack of discipline.
Sometimes the real issue is misalignment.
When you do not know your values, it becomes easy to live up to other people’s expectations. Family expectations. Career expectations. Money expectations. Social expectations. The expectations of the people closest to you.
This episode is about finding clarity again.
Eric talks about values, purpose, failure, self-leadership, the pain of climbing the wrong ladder, and how to take one small step toward a life that actually feels aligned.
You will also learn a simple breathing reset and presence practice you can use when your mind feels overwhelmed.
Key reminder:
You are not always stuck because you are lazy.
Sometimes you are stuck because you are living by values you never consciously chose.

Have you ever received a strange message about a package, a bank account, a family emergency, or an opportunity that felt too urgent to ignore?
In Taiwan, scams are everywhere. But this episode is not only about avoiding scams. It is about understanding the emotional pressure that makes people vulnerable to them.
Scams do not begin when you click the link.
They begin when your body gets rushed.
In this episode of Taiwanica, Eric explores how scams use fear, urgency, shame, hope, FOMO, and pressure to influence decision-making. He also shares personal stories about being scammed, suspicious messages, emotional reactions, and why self-trust does not mean trusting every feeling.
It means learning how to pause.
You will hear about common scam patterns in Taiwan, why smart people still get manipulated, how emotional pressure affects your judgment, and how to build more self-leadership before making important decisions.
This episode is for anyone living in Taiwan, connected to Taiwan, or trying to become clearer and calmer in a world full of pressure, persuasion, and urgency.
Key reminder:
If your body is panicking, your mind is probably moving too fast.
Before you click, transfer money, reply, or say yes, pause. Check your emotional state. Verify through another channel. Then decide from a clearer place.

In this episode of Taiwanica, Eric introduces a new chapter for the podcast: conversations with people building something meaningful in Taiwan.
This is not just an entrepreneurship series.
It is a series about people who choose to build something in Taiwan and are changed by the process.
Eric shares why Taiwanica is bringing in more real stories from people living the lessons of clarity, courage, responsibility, and self-leadership. These upcoming conversations are not only about business success. They are about the pressure before success, the lessons learned through Taiwan, and the kind of person someone has to become in order to keep building.
If you live in Taiwan, you know building something here is not always simple. There are unspoken rules, cultural differences, trust-building moments, and times when Taiwan forces you to see yourself more clearly.
This episode is for anyone building a business, a project, or a new direction in Taiwan. Even if you are not an entrepreneur, you are still building some kind of life.
The main question of this episode is simple:
我現在正在建立什麼?
What am I building right now?
If you feel stuck, unclear, or internally off track while building your next chapter in Taiwan, this episode will help you reflect on what you are creating, what it is asking of you, and what your next honest step may be.

In this episode of Taiwanica, Eric talks about why you may not actually need more motivation. You may need less energy leakage.
Many people feel tired, unmotivated, and emotionally drained, but the real issue is not always laziness or lack of discipline. Sometimes your energy is leaking into conversations you keep avoiding, boundaries you keep softening, people you keep tolerating, emotions you keep replaying, and situations that no longer give life back to you.
In Chinese, this is called 漏能量 — leaking energy.
Eric breaks down how energy leakage shows up in daily life in Taiwan: long workdays, LINE messages after hours, family expectations, pressure to be polite, fear of being difficult, and the habit of saying yes when your body already knows the answer is no.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
This episode is for people in Taiwan who don’t just want to survive pressure, but want to become clearer, stronger, and more conscious in daily life.
If you feel drained, scattered, or stuck in the same emotional patterns every week, this episode will help you ask one powerful question:
What is one truth I can act on in the next 24 hours?

In this episode of Taiwanica, Eric talks about one of the most important life skills most people never study: negotiation.
Negotiation is not only for sales, business, or marketing. In daily life, we negotiate with bosses, coworkers, partners, parents, children, friends, and even ourselves. Whether you are asking for a better salary, setting a boundary at work, talking with your family, or trying to communicate better in a relationship, negotiation is happening all the time.
In Chinese, negotiation is 談判, tán pàn. But this episode reframes negotiation as something simple and practical: communicating what you want, understanding what the other person wants, and finding a way forward without losing yourself.
Eric shares why many people in Taiwan avoid negotiation because they do not want to create conflict, lose harmony, or make the atmosphere awkward. He discusses common fears such as:
我怕被討厭 — wǒ pà bèi tǎo yàn — I’m afraid of being disliked.
我怕被拒絕 — wǒ pà bèi jù jué — I’m afraid of being rejected.
我怕氣氛變尷尬 — wǒ pà qì fēn biàn gān gà — I’m afraid the atmosphere will become awkward.
You’ll learn why silence is still a form of negotiation, how saying “it’s okay” when it is not okay can create resentment, and why clear expression — 清楚表達, qīng chǔ biǎo dá — is the foundation of healthier communication.
This episode also includes practical tools you can use immediately, including:
A simple sentence to make negotiation easier:
“I understand your side, and I’d like to discuss what could work for both of us.”
A confidence-building color exercise before difficult conversations.
A reminder that negotiation is not war. It is mature communication.
If you live in Taiwan and want to become clearer, stronger, and more confident in your daily communication, this episode will help you start asking for what you need without being pushy, aggressive, or disrespectful.

In part two of The “Yeah, But…” Trap, Eric goes deeper into the limiting beliefs hiding underneath your excuses.
In part one, we looked at how people often say 可是… kě shì… — “but…” — when they hear advice that could help them. In this episode, we go underneath the excuse and ask the real question:
如果這真的有用,我需要面對什麼?
rú guǒ zhè zhēn de yǒu yòng, wǒ xū yào miàn duì shén me?
“If this actually worked, what would I have to face?”
This question helps reveal the deeper fear: fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of responsibility, fear of being seen, or fear of changing your identity.
Eric explains the difference between discernment and dismissal. Discernment says, “What part of this could I test?” Dismissal says, “This won’t work for me.”
You’ll learn a simple 24-hour practice:
不要馬上否定,先試試看。
bù yào mǎ shàng fǒu dìng, xiān shì shì kàn.
“Don’t reject it immediately. Try it first.”
This episode is especially relevant for Taiwanese professionals, English learners, people dealing with workplace pressure, family expectations, overthinking, 內耗, and repeated self-doubt.

In this episode of Taiwanica, Eric explores one of the most common hidden patterns that keeps people stuck: the “Yeah, but…” trap.
In Chinese, we can call this 可是心態, kě shì xīn tài — the “but mindset.” It shows up when you say you want change, but immediately dismiss the advice, tools, or opportunities that could actually help you.
Maybe you think:
可是我沒時間 — but I don’t have time.
可是我沒辦法 — but I can’t.
可是我的老闆不會理解 — but my boss won’t understand.
可是我的情況不一樣 — but my situation is different.
This episode connects the “Yeah, but…” pattern to 自我設限, zì wǒ shè xiàn, or self-limiting beliefs, especially in Taiwan work culture, family expectations, relationships, and personal growth.
You’ll learn why your excuses may sound reasonable but still keep you stuck, why dismissing ideas too quickly can block your next breakthrough, and how to start testing new possibilities instead of rejecting them automatically.
This episode is for people in Taiwan who don’t just want to survive pressure — they want to become clearer, stronger, and more conscious in daily life.

Ever feel like your brain's a hamster wheel on steroids—spinning with "what ifs" that won't quit—while a heavy fog of "why bother" settles in? In this raw episode of Taiwanica, we cut through the noise of Taiwan's high-stakes hustle (think MRT meltdowns and endless Dcard doom-scrolls) to drop two game-changing breathing hacks that slash anxiety and lift depression vibes in minutes. No therapy couch required—just your breath and a willingness to reset.
The Instant Off-Switch
Picture this: You're mid-panic over that looming deadline, heart racing like a scooter in rush hour. One simple inhale-hold-exhale cycle later? Calm crashes in like a cool night breeze off the Danshui River. We're talking the 4-7-8 breath—Dcard's secret weapon for taming the chaos.
Joy on Demand
Stuck in Taipei's smoggy grind, nose clogged, soul drained? Flip the script with Alternate Nostril Breathing, the "Yoga for Joy" that's clearing airways and mind-fogs for stressed-out islanders. It's not woo-woo—it's your two-minute ticket to deeper breaths, sharper focus, and that elusive spark of inner peace.
Tune in for real stories from Taiwanese forums, pro tips on snagging those free therapy sessions, and how to swap solo struggles for squad support (shoutout to Polyglot.TW meetups!). If burnout's your shadow, this ep's your light—hit play and exhale the weight.
Look, you don't have to white-knuckle through the worry or wade alone in the despair—grab these breaths, build your circle, and watch your world expand. Remember: In Taiwan's beat or anywhere, you're wired for joy, not just survival. Exhale the old story, inhale the liberated you - now go breathe free.
Three Must-Hear Takeaways:

How to Turn Jealousy, Envy, and 比較心態 Into Growth
In this episode of Taiwanica, we explore how jealousy (嫉妒, jí dù), envy (羨慕, xiàn mù), and comparison (比較, bǐ jiào) create self-doubt and internal friction (內耗, nèi hào) in our daily lives. Learn how these common emotions can keep you stuck when left unchecked, and discover practical strategies to transform them into action, appreciation, and personal growth. We also discuss why complaining often keeps you trapped in cycles of inaction and how a simple daily exercise can turn doubt into a powerful guide for improvement.
Whether you’re navigating relationships, careers, or personal development in Taiwan, this episode will help you use these emotions constructively. Plus, learn how to integrate this practice into your commute or daily routines to create real change.

"Can we talk tomorrow?"
Your boss sends those four words, and suddenly your mind turns into a multi-season Netflix series. Am I in trouble? Did I mess up? Am I getting fired? You spend the entire night having 12 imaginary conversations and burning yourself out. The next day? They just want help on a new project.
In Taiwan, we often dismiss this as 「想太多」 (xiǎng tài duō - thinking too much). But let’s be brutally honest: you aren't thinking too much. You are thinking without direction.
When we refuse to choose how to respond to a situation, our minds run completely unchecked. We'd rather suffer in the endless loop of "what ifs" than make a firm choice and risk being wrong.
In this episode of Taiwanica, we break down why overthinking is actually a habit of avoiding decisions, and how you can reclaim your mental authority.
Inside this episode, you’ll learn:
The Hard Truth:
Overthinking doesn’t destroy your life. Indecision does. You are not your thoughts; you are the one who chooses beyond them.

(You're here, but it feels like you're gone.)
Have you ever heard this from a partner, parent, or friend? Or maybe you've sat through an entire dinner nodding, smiling, and saying "uh-huh," only to realize you can't remember a single word of the conversation.
In Taiwan’s fast-paced, screen-dominated lifestyle, we have become absolute experts at Performing Presence. On the outside, we look like we are listening. On the inside, our background programs are running at 100% capacity—replaying work arguments, drafting emails, or stressing over a LINE notification.
In this episode of Taiwanica, we look at presence not as a "zen monk" personality trait, but as a perishable physical muscle. If you don't train it, it degrades. We unpack a common question trending on local forums: "Why do I feel completely disconnected even when I'm physically surrounded by the people I care about?" and provide a zero-BS framework to get your mind back into your body.
What we break down in this episode:
The Core Shift:
You don’t need an hour of silent meditation on a cushion to fix this. You just need to close the gap between when your mind leaves the room and when you notice it's gone. Awareness is the beginning of freedom.

"你等一下有空嗎?" (Are you free later?)
When your boss sends that exact LINE message at 5:55 PM, your stomach drops. You haven't even replied yet, but suddenly your body feels heavy, your mind is racing, and your entire evening is hijacked.
Here is the brutal truth: The message isn’t what drained your energy. It's the war you fought inside your own mind afterward.
In Taiwan’s high-pressure work culture, we are trained to be polite, responsible, and above all, bù yào má fan bié rén (don't trouble others). But this cultural conditioning often leads to massive 內耗 (Nèi Hào) — internal friction and mental self-consumption. You aren't exhausted from doing too much; you're exhausted from overanalyzing, replaying conversations, and fighting reality.
In this episode of Taiwanica, we use sharp, direct logic and a practical mindset approach to break the 5-step loop of overthinking. You'll learn why trying to "control" your thoughts only creates more friction, and how radical acceptance is the ultimate shortcut to reclaiming your daily energy.
What we break down in this episode:
The Hard Truth:
Your boss probably sent that message and forgot about it five minutes later. You carried it for five hours. Stop paying an anxiety tax on rent-free thoughts.

Have you ever had a 30-second interaction ruin your next 5 hours?
A short message like "Are you free later?" or a specific tone from a colleague can knock your entire day off balance. In Taiwan, we are masters of staying polite. We say "沒關係" (it’s okay) when it’s not, and we push through. But while your mind stays busy with tasks, your body is collecting the "open loops" of every negative emotion you didn’t process.
In this episode, we explore the "Body Memory"; the idea that our physical system carries 100 times more information than our mind. If you don't learn how to "close the loop," you carry work stress into your dinner with family, and environmental anxiety into your morning routine.
Inside this episode, you’ll learn:
The "Start Now" Challenge:
Don't let today’s friction become tomorrow’s personality. Use the release technique today and notice the shift in your evening energy.

"Why is my life not changing?"
If you've ever asked yourself this while sitting at your desk at 8:00 PM on a Tuesday, this episode is for you. Most Taiwanese professionals feel "stuck," but the truth is sharper: You aren't stuck; you are just repeating a pattern.
In this deep dive, we blend the blunt logic of Alex Hormozi with the spiritual clarity of Sadhguru to look at the "silent agreements" we make in the Taiwan workforce. From the cultural pressure of bù yào má fan bié rén (don't trouble others) to the "short-term comfort" of bù hǎo yì si, we explore how your internal habits are training people how to treat you.
What we cover in this 15-minute masterclass:
The Real-Time Practice:

Are you working harder but feeling like you’re falling behind?
In the high-pressure environment of 2026, many Taiwanese professionals are caught in a "split-attention" trap. We are so focused on the promotion, the boss’s approval, or the outcome of a project that we lose the very energy we need to actually perform.
In this relaunch episode of Taiwanica, we break down why "letting go of the outcome" isn't about caring less—it's about strategic focus. We explore the fundamental shift from Outcomes to Inputs and how this internal mindset shift can clear your brain fog and give you a competitive edge in a crowded market.
Inside this episode, you’ll learn:
The 12-Minute Masterclass Exercise:
Stick around for the end of the episode for the "Input Reset"—a real-time mental audit you can do during your commute to reclaim your focus for the rest of the day.

Welcome to Taiwanica, Episode 80, Friday Short. I'm your host, Anita. Today, we delve into a crucial topic: identifying three red flags that indicate you might be in a toxic love relationship. Relationships are inherently complicated, and it's essential to distinguish between healthy dynamics and those needing improvement. By the end of this episode, I will share practical methods to enhance communication with your loved one. Let’s get started!
Red Flag 1: Comparison
Comparison is a significant indicator of a toxic relationship. If your partner frequently compares you to others, it's a sign of dissatisfaction. Whether it’s about physical appearance, financial status, or other attributes, comparison is harmful. For instance, if your partner says, "I wish you had a body like that celebrity" or "My friend's husband buys her expensive gifts, why don't you?" it shows they want you to change to meet their expectations. This behavior suggests a lack of appreciation for who you are, creating an imbalance in the relationship.
Red Flag 2: Not Willing to Apologize
Everyone makes mistakes, but a healthy relationship requires acknowledging and apologizing for them. If your partner refuses to admit mistakes or apologize, it's a red flag. This behavior indicates a reluctance to make sacrifices or admit faults, hindering any chance of improvement. For example, if your partner checks out other people and, when confronted, dismisses your feelings instead of apologizing, it shows a lack of respect and willingness to address issues.
Red Flag 3: Belittling
Belittling involves making you feel inferior or less significant. This can manifest in public or private settings. If your partner dismisses your opinions or makes decisions without your input, it's a severe red flag. Statements like, "I make the money, so I make the decisions," highlight a power imbalance. Belittling damages self-esteem and indicates a fundamental disrespect in the relationship.
Conclusion:
Recognizing these red flags is the first step toward addressing issues in a toxic relationship. However, improvement is possible if both partners are willing to work on it. Effective communication is key. Express your feelings without judgment, excuses, or comparison. Strive for a bala

Understanding Envy and How It Differs from Jealousy
In this episode of the Taiwanica Podcast's Solo Friday Special, host Eric delves into the topic of envy, exploring its definition, impact on daily life, and how it differs from jealousy. The discussion highlights envy as not solely negative but as an emotion that can be transformed into a positive force if understood and utilized properly. Through vivid metaphors, including the contrasting sides of a street, Eric illustrates how envy can trap individuals in a state of dissatisfaction but also how, with awareness and actionable steps, one can harness envy as a motivator for achieving personal goals. The episode further differentiates envy from jealousy through examples and emphasizes the importance of recognizing abundance in the world, thereby reducing the power of both emotions. Eric concludes with an invitation for feedback and engagement on social media platforms and the personal website.

Who knew that our 75th episode at Taiwanica Podcast would turn into such a soul-searching journey? Anita and I never imagined that our celebration would lead us down the path of dissecting selfishness and selflessness, concepts that have haunted and challenged every one of us. This particular dance of interests—balancing our own needs with the weight of societal expectations—is something that hits close to home for both of us. As we share our personal narratives, with me bringing an American perspective on individualism and Anita considering her Taiwanese roots and familial obligations, we hope to shed light on this universal struggle.
The nuances of attending a friend's birthday or the commitment seen in careers like medicine and firefighting might seem worlds apart, yet they converge on the same dilemma: how do we honor our own needs without neglecting those of others? We're all familiar with the guilt that creeps in when we choose ourselves over someone else, but what if there's a way to craft a solution that benefits everyone involved? That's the conversation we're bringing to the table—practical wisdom for creating scenarios where no one has to lose.
To cap things off, we dive into the concept of self-value, and how it shouldn't be overshadowed by our drive to serve others. Anita opens up about her struggle with self-care amidst the pressure of familial duty, offering insights into how setting boundaries has become her act of rebellion and self-preservation. And as your hosts, we're excited to tease the idea of an upcoming deep dive into personal values—because learning to live authentically, aligning with what truly matters to us, just might be the key to resolving the age-old conflict between self-interest and selflessness. So join us, as we embrace the full spectrum of what it means to be human, right here on Taiwanica Podcast.

Welcome to the latest episode of Taiwanica Podcast, where your hosts Anita and Eric take you on an enlightening journey into the fascinating world of parenting styles. In this episode, we delve deep into the intriguing contrasts between Taiwan and the USA, uncovering the unique approaches and beliefs that shape the way children are raised in these two diverse cultures.
In the United States, parenting styles emphasize empathy and connection, building a strong emotional bond with the child and understanding their thoughts and feelings. Positive reinforcement is favored over punishment, and setting clear limits and boundaries is seen as essential for a child's sense of security and responsibility. Moreover, emotional regulation is prioritized to help children develop resilience and cope effectively with life's challenges.
Meanwhile, in Taiwan, there is a strong emphasis on respect for authority, including parents, teachers, and elders. Academic achievement is highly valued, with parents often pushing their children to excel in school. Collectivism plays a significant role, where the needs of the family or community take precedence over individual desires. Discipline tends to be strict, sometimes involving physical punishment, to enforce rules and societal norms.
Join us as we navigate these distinctive parenting styles, exploring their impacts on child development and uncovering the similarities and differences that shape the upbringing of future generations in Taiwan and the USA. Get ready to gain fresh insights and broaden your understanding of this captivating subject!

Food combinations come in all shapes and sizes, and some may seem strange at first glance but combine surprisingly well! In Taiwan, soy milk and oil sticks are up there with the most popular street foods. The soy milk is soybean-based and provides a sweet, velvety taste. The crunchy oil sticks add an interesting contrasting texture – not to mention fat content – to the soy milk for a truly unique experience. For another cultural culinary adventure, try out tomatoes and peanut butter & jelly… yes, really! The tomatoes provide juiciness when combined with the sweetness of the jam while the nutty peanut butter ties everything together. Meanwhile in the USA, two classics have combined to create something even better - grilled cheese hamburgers are one example that epitomizes American comfort food combining buttery melty cheese with juicy beef patties. And who could forget macaroni and cheese burgers? A guilty pleasure of ours! What strange food combinations do you like together?

Some people say that Thanksgiving is a holiday that is similar to Chinese New Year.
What do you do on this holiday?
Get together, eat food, have family drama, and that's just about it.
But there are some great things that happen during this event.
For example, everyone needs to bring their own dish to Thanksgiving - or they have to cook it together in the SAME kitchen. It gets intense...
For the kids, in the morning, there is a parade in New York City in the morning that carries balloons.
One of the cons of the holiday is that there is way too much food and most of the time it doesn't signify anything deep. We just eat and "give thanks", which is us saying thank you for the meal.
Anita shares her experience as a foreigner in the USA and what were the highlights of her turkey experience.

Disclaimer! We are not here to promote the usage of any illegal drugs. This is an episode that is ONLY sharing information and stories about this topic. With that out of the way... hello!
There are so many ways for people to get "high" these days.
The strangest thing is though, most people know that they are illegal, but never asked the simplest question, why?
It seems that our societies made these decisions long ago and now are slowly questioning whether to maintain or change.
The USA has been converting more and more people to think of legalizing these illegal drugs.
It's been a controversial debate state by state. But as more states legalize and see the benefits: extra tax money to go to education, infrastructure, and fewer loved ones in prison.
No wonder it seems like a no-brainer!
But still, there are drugs that need to be better regulated - we discuss about those and how they connect with social class.
Click here to listen to our episode about social class between Taiwan and the USA
To Eric and Anita, illegal drugs have their place.
But they also think that legalizing drugs, so long as they have proper rules and regulations, is the appropriate thing to do.
This is because they care about a developing society that understands each other rather than condemns.
Also, we share a little story about our experiences with Marijuana.

Another day, another dollar.
Did you ever think that the amount of money you have in your pocket represents what social class you're in?
Let's face it: money rules all of us and everything that we do. It is the representation of success and the medium on which we used to get whenever we want. But it's even more than that. It classifies you. It tells you what you can and cannot do. And it's all recorded for society to see. Intense, right?
Check out the book that Eric mentioned The Four Hour Work Week
To Eric and Anita, social class has been an interesting idea for them. Starting from the lowest level just a year ago to climb the best they can to greater heights has been no easy matter. They talk about their point of you on these topics and how each of these groups is represented.
[Disclosure: Some of the links in this episode are affiliate links, which means if you make a purchase after clicking said link, we will earn a commission at no additional cost to you.]
For most people, it's not even a topic that they even consider. But for others, it's a big deal. It's almost a competition to rank higher than your surrounding neighbors, friends, and even family. To be that way. No word from the wise Eric, don't let class you, that you define class for yourself.
Anita and Eric grew up in a world with and without much and they explain their opinions about this topic in episode 31 of Taiwanica!

Addicted to Facebook, Twitter, or Tiktok?
Ever wonder why you feel a little embarrassed when someone asks you: "How much time do you spend on Facebook?"
We all have our vices. Sometimes we have control over them and sometimes they have control over us. Most of the time people think social media is a good influence on their lives because of the purposes and the benefits they use it for and get.
To Eric and Anita, social media has become a factor much greater than just communication. It is about linking people, connecting on a deeper level, and understanding people who you may not even know in real life and yet to know better than some of your family members just because you spent so much time on their profiles.

Let's face it. Social media is forever a part of our lives. It's not going anywhere and in fact, it is constantly evolving. But the big question is, are we evolving with it, or are being forced to adapt to it?
A lot of people wonder about these kinds of things and it's something that we want to discuss. Anita and Eric grew up in a world with and without social media and they explain their opinions about it in episode 30 of Taiwanica!

Ever seen a tornado?
Have you ever been in an earthquake?
Disasters are ... well... scary!
No matter what country you're in and where in that country you are, mother nature has a way of striking fear into your heart. This is something that we all can relate to but just in different ways. For some, it's something from the sea, for others, it's something from the sky, and even for others, it's something from the land itself.
No, this is not a band reference. I am talking about the real elements of the Earth: water wind and fire.

Did you know that the calories in one moon cake are equal to 45 minutes of running?
I first heard this while I was scarfing down my third egg yolk moon cake of the day (I didn't count how many for the week).
Let's just say... I haven't had much moon cake since then.
Taiwan sure does love them. So much that you can find them in literally every store, stand, or office building around this time.

Once just commercial advertising the great taste of BBQ sauce during this time of the year has turned this activity into a cultural must-do, if not, your parents, neighbors, and distant relatives will all gasp at your disgrace for not buying a grill to celebrate the big moon - SHAME!

Mid-autumn festival is all about getting together with family and friends one last time before the summer ends and people go back to their regular routines and get used to them again like going to school, being serious about work, and leaving home after a nice summer break.
So how do the Taiwanese celebrate?
They like to get together and have some barbecue, share a few moon cakes, and be merry throughout the week by doing a whole lot of nothing. It's actually Eric's favorite holiday in Taiwan.

Voting is a controversial issue that has always agitated a heated debate between parties in every nation, and we are going to dive right on into this political mess today!

That's right! I am talking about Independence Day!
Anita and Eric's discussion today talks about the one holiday that really makes Americans want to pull out the grills, see the awkward parts of their families, and most importantly, BLOW STUFF UP!
The world always has its eyes on the USA. The number of movies, TV, and news that come from America is abundant, to say the least. But not much is truly concrete on what happens on this memorial holiday. So our goal in today's episode is to bring some clarity and depth to how an average citizen would celebrate. If you’re ready to learn how Americans show their love for their country then let's tune into Episode 17 of Taiwanica!

There is a big question out there in Taiwan about why the struggle is so great for Taiwanese to succeed in a foreign language; especially, English. This phenomenon isn't unique to Taiwan. In fact, countries like Korea, Japan, and China also experience these same barriers.
My guest today is a linguist AND foreign language polyglot, who despite growing up in Taiwan's education system has overcome the foreign language obstacle and has spread his knowledge and opportunities all across Taiwan and has started a very successful group, Polyglot.tw's. His name is Thierry Hsieh and I am very grateful for him to be here. Let's all give Thierry love and appreciation for joining Taiwanica.
Whether you’re Taiwanese or not, I think you’ll get a lot of insight from my conversation with Thierry that can help you realize a bit more about Taiwan overall. If you’re ready to learn how to cultivate others’ well-being without sacrificing your own, then let's tune into Episode 16 of Taiwanica!

Has coffee become the go-to drink in Taiwan? Long ago, tea was the champion of luxury and relaxing times. But there is a new king in town and Taiwanese people have lined up (like they do so well) for this hot, dirt-tasting goodness.
Now how does this relate to the USA? Join Eric and Anita to find out the biggest differences between our countries.
Spoiler alert! This is why we made this episode! We want to share with everyone our view about how coffee knows no borders when it comes to being a common interest among people. What better way to get to know someone than to share a cup of coffee with them at your favorite cafe?
If you're looking to broaden your understanding of how coffee impacts these two countries similarly and differently, this episode is for you.
We are so grateful to have you here to listen to this episode! It is a passion of ours to chat about this topic and share with you our thoughts!
In the episode, we mention a way to help us support our caffeine addiction, which is through this great website known as "Buy Me A Coffee" (click to support).
