I know we’re not always thrilled about the additional candles on our birthday cakes, but it really is a privilege to age. In today’s episode, I highlight the many perks of getting older and wiser and share how we can be more at peace with our advancing years. The great news is that those who have a positive mindset about aging are healthier in many ways, and, on average, live longer. This episode will encourage you to stop condemning aging and start celebrating the many blessings of your golden years.
Once again, thank you for a wonderful season three! I hope you all enjoyed listening every week. I am so grateful for the support as always!
If you have a moment, please leave a rating and review – it’s always lovely to hear from you all. See you next season!

TW: discussion of animal cruelty
Kristina McKean is the founder and owner of The Elephant Project, a women-led and women-run social give-back business. For as long as she can remember, Kristina has felt a deep-rooted kinship with animals, and the welfare of elephants has become Kristina’s passion and life quest.
With a background in design and product development, Kristina was able to build a thoughtful stuffed animal brand to raise awareness and funds to help save and care for orphaned and abused elephants, dogs, and big cats. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the Save Us™ Collection of plushies goes to organizations all over the world that are dedicated to helping and advocating for animals in need. In this episode, we chat about what Kristina experienced on her travels that led her down this path, ethical travel, how we can better support animals abroad and locally, and why it’s important to give back to the causes that speak to us personally.

Good news: Fun isn’t just for the kiddos anymore. As we age, it’s easy to view fun as frivolous or unproductive, but in reality, fun experiences are crucial for our health and well-being. I discuss the many psychological and physical benefits of fun and how you can (easily) incorporate more fun into your day-to-day life.
In this episode, I break down the different types of fun (there are three!), how you accidentally may be having faux fun, and, surprisingly, why it may be wise to schedule your fun.

Have you felt incapacitated by your own thoughts or worries about falling behind? Have you grasped at subpar opportunities due to the irrational fear that nothing better would come your way? Have you experienced anger or envy when friends or coworkers succeeded or advanced? If so, you may have been stuck in a scarcity mindset. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there, but how do we free ourselves from that negative (and unhelpful) way of thinking?
With this episode, you’ll discover how to access and revert back to an abundance mindset. Those with an abundance mindset tend to approach life with optimism, resilience, innovation, and gratitude. We can all create more opportunities, collaborations, and solutions by focusing on abundance instead of scarcity.

If you are a Santa Barbara local, you may have spotted Vivian strutting her stuff at a drag brunch or hosting a fun karaoke or bingo night downtown. In this episode, we discuss how Vivian first started performing, how she embodies her drag persona (hint: she channels one of my favorite singers/performers), and the LGBTQIA+ community in Santa Barbara (and the ways that we can all show up and support). Vivian vulnerably shares her joys and challenges and why she focuses on the cheerleaders instead of the haters (as we all should).
Vivian Storm was discovered in 2009 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh while obtaining her Masters in Educational Leadership. Taking a chance at completely owning her talents, Vivian entered a college drag show. She quickly fell in love with the art of illusion and performance. By using emotion-filled songs for her empowering performances, Vivian continues to connect with her fans (a.k.a. Storm Chasers). Vivian also offers workshops on topics such as worthiness, confidence, performance, and gender.

Want to attract your desires like a magnet? Explore yourself and your true goals? Obtain more positive outcomes with positive thinking? Maybe you’ve heard about manifestation, but you don’t actually know where to start?
While the practice of aspirational thinking is far from a new concept, there’s no denying that manifestation is having a major moment in pop culture – “#Manifestation” has over 51 billion views on TikTok alone.
In this episode, you’ll learn all about what it actually means to manifest and how you can work with your dreams and objectives instead of against them.

We’ve all heard the phrase or been offered the advice to “love yourself more,” but that can be easier said than done. By practicing self-love, you are appreciating your own well-being, worth, and happiness. Like building any muscle, loving yourself takes time and consistency, and it’s something you may have to revisit daily to strengthen. I know that there are days where I have to work a little harder or dig a little deeper to fully love myself. I hope this episode reminds you that self-love isn’t selfish and that prioritizing your self-worth is necessary and healthy.

Welcome to Season 3 of The Bets Life Podcast! I’m thrilled to be back, and I can’t wait for all of the incredible topics and guest interviews to come!
Many of you have wanted to know more about my time in France, so I thought that I would kick off season 3 by diving into my experience living abroad. My husband and I spent over 4.5 months living in France (2 months in the South of France and 2.5 months in Paris), and it truly was an epic adventure.
When we arrived back home, I reflected on the aspects of French culture that I really admired. I thought about what I could take from my time living in France and how I could apply different practices and mindsets to my life in America.
In this episode, I discuss food (it was unreal), work/life balance, shopping, beauty standards, body image, and so much more.

Disclaimer: This episode is for educational and informational purposes and does not substitute for professional medical advice, as I am not a doctor or healthcare provider. If you are seeking medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment always consult a medical provider or healthcare professional.
I’m putting all of my cards on the table for today’s episode and sharing openly and honestly what I’ve been experiencing lately. A little over a month ago, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and I have been working through all of the emotions and feelings that have bubbled up with this diagnosis.
I discuss my frustrating healthcare experiences, why you need to advocate for yourself, all about what PCOS actually is, my personal symptoms, and how I am managing it currently. I debated recording this very vulnerable episode, but my goal was to help inform and share about PCOS as it impacts 5-10% of women of reproductive ages and is one of the most common causes of female infertility. I hope that it will be helpful to share my story with you all.
Thank you so much for an incredible second season of The Bets Life Podcast. I am grateful for all of my listeners and amazing guests. If you enjoyed this season, please leave a five-star rating and review. Let me know what solo episodes or guest interviews were your favorites! It means the world to me, and I am so thankful for the support!

Today’s guest is Erica Brown, the founder and owner of Dylan Star, a local Santa Barbara clothing boutique with two locations – one in the Funk Zone and one at the Paseo Nuevo mall. Erica was the 2022 BRAVO “Woman Business Owner of the Year” award recipient from the SB chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.
Erica believes in the experience of shopping and that wearing something that you love will remind you of the star that you are. She knows that shopping should be fun, and that there is no substitute for personal connection and the ability to touch, try on, and experiment with clothing and styling in person. She hopes that her customers dream big and shop small.
In this episode, we discuss how Erica started her boutique, how clothing can shape confidence, online vs. in-store shopping, how men and women shop differently, advice for people in the retail business, and so much more.

I am thrilled to have Pamala Oslie, a consultant, best-selling author, visionary, professional psychic intuitive, medium, and aura expert on today’s episode. Pam has appeared on ABC, CBS, The View, Dr. Oz, and hundreds of other radio and television shows. She has also been featured in many national magazines and is the author of five successful and popular books. Pam has spoken at TedX Talks, the International Forum on New Science, Fortune 500 companies, and many seminars for professionals in the psychology, education and health fields. For over 40 years, her mission has been to help people create success, joy, and fulfillment in every area of their lives.
If you aren’t familiar with auras or aura readings, don’t worry. We discuss what an aura actually is, how Pam began her career, what the different colors mean, how to discover your own aura colors, and how you can learn to see auras too (we all have the potential!). Pam shares about her own aura colors and mine too (hint: it’s not a typical pairing).
Before you listen to this episode, you can take a quiz (linked below – answer honestly) to predetermine your aura colors. You’ll learn more about what it means to be empowered with your colors and advice if you (or those around you) are feeling disempowered.

I know it can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel if you are currently suffering from burnout. If you feel like you’ve been stuck moving at 100 mph and are completely exhausted, you are not alone. In a 2021 survey of 1,500 U.S. workers, over half said they were feeling burned out. In this episode, I break down what burnout is, how to identify it, and how to recover and move forward.
I share lots of facts and actionable tips on how to recognize and handle those awful burnout times. We all need to remember that burning that candle at both ends is not sustainable or healthy. Whether it’s implementing better boundaries, communication, or self care, I hope this episode helps you get to the bottom of your burnout.

There’s no denying that your wedding day is one of the most memorable and joyous days of your life, and I trusted my big day with Jessica Kuipers, a Santa Barbara-based wedding planner. I think that most brides will agree that wedding planning can be exhausting and overwhelming, so thank goodness for wedding planners (worth every penny in my opinion).
Jessica is an event planner that serves California and world-wide destinations. Her company, Onyx & Redwood, specializes in designing high-end luxury weddings and her work has been featured in Elle Japan, Martha Stewart, and Brides. When it comes to weddings, Jessica believes that luxury doesn’t need to be boring and edgy can still be elegant. Her whole business motto revolves around the simple concept that your wedding is 100% about you and your partner. Jessica’s philosophy is all about the “Permission to be Yourself.”
In today’s episode, we discuss wedding trends, staying creative in the event industry, destination weddings, mistakes brides (or grooms) make, and so much more! Plus we chat about our own weddings – what we cherished, what made it unforgettable, and what we would do differently today.

Wouldn’t life be so much easier if curing a vulnerability hangover just took an Advil and a greasy meal? If you’ve ever felt shame or fear bubble up inside of you after opening up to someone, this episode is for you. Believe me, we’ve all been there.
I discuss what it means to have a vulnerability hangover, how to heal from it, why being vulnerable is so important, and some tips on moving forward with vulnerability (despite the risk of a hangover). I share quotes and advice from Dr. Brené Brown, a renowned shame and vulnerability researcher. While scary and intimidating, vulnerability allows us to build connections and show our true and honest selves.
I hope this episode will open your eyes and allow you to see all of the benefits of embracing vulnerability. It takes courage and bravery to take emotional risks!

I’m guessing that you’ve heard of imposter syndrome before or have even dealt with it personally. Don’t worry, you’re not alone if you are currently struggling with this or if you have previously experienced these feelings. Women (specifically women of color) are at a higher risk, and 70% of adults may experience imposter syndrome at some point in their lives.
This episode breaks down exactly what imposter syndrome is, the different types, common characteristics, ways to recognize it, and tips on how to overcome it and change your mindset.
I share my personal stories of imposter syndrome (believe me, been there, done that), and how I can occasionally still slip into that way of thinking. If you are currently in the thick of imposter syndrome, I hope that this episode can provide more information and the tools to stop this experience in its tracks.

Kelsey is a copywriting expert, marketing educator, and mental health advocate who helps entrepreneurs find their voice and write words that sell (without being “sales-y”). In this episode, Kelsey and I discuss burnout, major career and life changes, and ways to protect (and better) your mental health. Whether you love writing or absolutely despise it, she shares some incredible copywriting tips that can benefit all entrepreneurs.
Kelsey’s writing has been featured in Business Insider, Glamour, Refinery29, Boss Babe and more. An experienced public speaker, Kelsey has been invited to speak at some of the country's top marketing events like Hubspot’s "Inbound" and South by Southwest. She was recently named a ‘Rising Star’ by industry leader, Talking Influence, on their coveted “Influencer Top 50” list.
Kelsey's easy-to-understand teaching style has helped take struggling businesses to six figures and beyond, but that's not all that she’s passionate about. Kelsey's mission is to demystify the process of communicating with an online audience and to help people feel empowered and inspired every time they need to write or share about their business.

I recently read that a woman’s prime years are supposedly between 30 and 39. I’m 33, so I can’t fully attest to this belief yet, but it's made me take a stroll down memory lane to reflect on my 20s vs. 30s (thus far). I believe that every decade has its pros and cons, but I like to think that life only continues to get better with age.
In this episode, I discuss the highs and lows of my 20s and how I’ve changed in my 30s (more confident, less insecure, more established in my career, and less concerned with other’s opinions). I also unpack what I consider to be the key word of the 30s: change. I chat about the seasons of life and why it’s okay that everyone is on their own path and moving at their own pace.
Even in these alleged best years, it’s also normal to feel sadness along with elation, fear accompanied with comfort, and loneliness mixed with community. Life’s complicated and change can be wonderful but also challenging. Listen to hear why I think an ice cream sundae is a wonderful (and delicious) metaphor for life too.

Welcome to Season 2 of The Bets Life Podcast! I’m so excited to be back for this next season! I can’t wait for you to listen to all of the incredible guest interviews and solo topics to come.
To kick off this new season, I wanted to discuss a complicated and important topic: body image. This episode was inspired by the holiday season and my recent travels. I spent the holidays and my long vacation indulging and enjoying every second. I don’t have any regrets, but when I purchased new pants while on our trip, I had some shame creep up about the size that I was buying. This experience made me think about one of my favorite movie scenes from Eat, Pray, Love – I explain more in the episode.
This vacation moment led me to lots of reflection on body image and our ever-changing relationship with our own bodies and self love. While there is a lot of noise about (very) unrealistic or impossible body/beauty standards, most of the time we are our own harshest critic. At the end of this episode, I challenge you to switch the script and focus on ways to love your body.

Can you believe 2022 is almost over? Are you ready for 2023? I can’t wait to inevitably miswrite “2022” instead of “2023” in the new year. It always takes me a couple of months to get it right.
I discuss a popular topic in today’s episode: New Year’s resolutions. There have been years where I successfully completed my resolution, times that I didn't even attempt to make one, and instances where I threw in the towel almost immediately. I’m sure that many of you can relate.
With this episode, I’m excited to break down some resolution stats and research, share how you can actually accomplish your goal, and explore a variety of ideas to help you choose your 2023 resolution.
This is also the final episode of season one of The Bets Life Podcast. Sending a big thank you to all of my guests and listeners – thanks for making this first season so fun! Looking forward to season two and all of the conversations, laughs, and topics to come!
Happy holidays and Happy New Year!

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, and it’s almost here! It’s nice to enjoy time with family and friends, share delicious meals, and count our blessings.
In this episode, I discuss Thanksgiving traditions and reflect on gratitude. Increasing gratitude is not only good for your own health and mindset, but it’s also so important for building and maintaining relationships and connections.
As Cicero said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” Listen in to hear five ways that you can expand your gratitude and incorporate an attitude of gratitude into your daily life.
Speaking of gratitude, I am so grateful for you all, my incredible listeners. Thank you! Wishing you all a wonderful (early) Thanksgiving!

In today’s episode, I speak with Kristin Mansky, lead photographer and founder of Marra Creative Studio. Ten-plus years ago, Kristin borrowed a camera to take photos for her personal blog, and now she has built a successful photography and branding agency.
Kristin is passionate about creating genuine connections and helping people and brands achieve their full potential. Marra Creative Studio collaborates with women entrepreneurs and small businesses all over the country.
A small-town Wisconsin girl who lived in Ventura, CA for 16 years, Kristin now resides in the Midwest. She believes that life is to be lived in the moment, a smile can truly change a person's day, the mountains are always calling, and that successful days start with matcha mornings with her pups.
We discuss how she helps her clients feel more confident and comfortable during photoshoots and how brands can attract the right clients. We also chat about the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, moving across the country, and most-loved morning routines.

Happy Halloween!
The fall season tends to bring a slower pace and more time for reflection for me. While I enjoy the busyness and vibrancy of summer, I am thrilled to welcome in these quieter and cozier months. Plus, you know I’m ready for fall fashion – bring on the boots and sweaters!
Today, we are mainly talking about “letting go.” Cue the song from Frozen (just kidding). I share with you some of my favorite tips and exercises for slowing down and releasing tensions and stresses. With the seasonal change, I tend to focus on what I can bring in or carry forward into this new time of year and also what I can say goodbye to and leave behind. With these tips, I hope that you are able to create the space and flow that you need this season!

In this episode, I chat with Sarah Chhum, the creator of the popular Santa Barbara instagram account, SB Good Eats. Sarah and I met through the Instagram world, and we bonded over our love of Santa Barbara’s incredible restaurant scene (and Bettina pizza).
What began as a place where Sarah could simply post her own food photos, quickly grew into one of Santa Barbara’s top Instagram accounts. We dive into food photography tips, social media monetization, travel, cooking, and how people can (negatively) react when you stray from posting your typical content. We end our conversation with rapid-fire, honest questions and answers about Santa Barbara dining.
Listen in to hear us talk about some of our go-to spots for: happy hour, date night, lunch, cocktails, celebratory dining, brunch, and takeout.
As always, if you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, share, and/or leave a star rating and review. Thank you!

Today we are talking all about one of my favorite hobbies: travel!
Recently, my husband, Patrick, and I traveled to Canada (Vancouver and Whistler). After a summer spent at home in Santa Barbara, this was the first true vacation (and international trip) that we have taken in a while. As we all know, travel comes with its highs and lows and successes and headaches. I’ve been reflecting on our trip, and I wanted to share some tips and observations about traveling with you all (some more serious than others):
I hope that this episode will be useful for your future travels! As always, if you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, share, or leave a star rating and review. You can always reach me by email or send me a DM too. Thank you!

In this episode, I chat with the lovely Kara Pearson. Kara has a background in design and wardrobe styling and attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) for graphic design.
In 2014 at the age of 21, Kara launched her brand, Styled by Kara, an award-winning styling company that focused on high-end projects for print, editorial, campaign, and celebrity clientele. In 2017, Styled by Kara rebranded and emerged in the digital landscape as a marketing agency offering branding, strategy, social media management, content creation, editorial writing, and PR services.
Kara currently manages the marketing and social media for one of my favorite places in Santa Barbara: the Rosewood Miramar Beach. If you follow me on social media, you already know how much I enjoy visiting this dreamy hotel.
Kara and I discuss the good and the bad of social media, content creation, daily routines, injury recovery, and so much more!

In this episode, I discuss a major topic – taking action! I also chat about what can stop people (myself included) from taking action in the first place: feeling unqualified, perfectionism, and the fear of failure.
The truth is, getting from point A to point B in life is not always easy. Taking action can be hard and scary, but whether you succeed or fail, it’s always worth it to try. I wanted to explore this topic as I had a lot come up for me personally when I first started working on the podcast. From imposter syndrome to panic about failing, I understand the thoughts and emotions that can arise when beginning something new.
If you want to take action, but something is holding you back (mentally, emotionally, physically) then this episode is for you!

In this episode, I sit down with Corina, the owner of Wild & Free Jewelry. Corina started her creative journey over a decade ago. Throughout the years, her creations have evolved from feather necklaces and flower crowns to mermaid crowns and jackets. While her designs have continued to expand, the goal has always remained to create pieces that ignite a sense of wonder and imagination.
What began as an Etsy shop in 2011 is now her full-time career. For the first few years of her journey with Wild & Free Jewelry, Corina worked a full-time job and attended college. After graduation, she decided to take the leap and pursue her creative dreams. Ever since, she has been enamored with the process of creating designs for everyone from music festival lovers to brides-to-be.
All designs are inspired by the idea that no one is ever too old to play dress up. It's Corina’s hope that through her creations she can inspire you to welcome more creativity and wonder into your own life.

Happy Virgo season (for a few more days) everyone!
There is such a divide over birthdays; some people want to ignore or downplay the fact that they are aging, while others (like me) are all about excessively celebrating.
In this episode, I share advice and takeaways as I now enter my 33rd year:
I am so excited to share these realizations and words of wisdom with you all! Connect with me on Instagram and tell me what your favorite piece of advice is, and what you resonate with the most!

Hi! Welcome to the Bets Life Podcast. I’m your host, Betsy O’Brien!
I’m so excited that you all are here. This podcast has been a labor of love that I have been working on over the past year, and I can't believe that it's actually finally live!
Let me introduce myself. If you don't know me from Instagram or my website, be sure to visit TheBetsLife.com when you are done listening. I am a blogger and writer from Santa Barbara, California. While hunkered down during the pandemic, I decided to create The Bets Life, and, luckily, the brand is still going strong two plus years later!
If you are familiar with my writing, a major category for me is Real Talk. It's my favorite category on my website, and the one I enjoy writing the most. My goal is to have authentic conversations where I cover everything that's coming up for me as a 30-something-year-old woman.
My goal with this podcast is to continue that trend and dive deeper into vulnerable and relatable conversations solo or with guests. I can’t wait to share funny and meaningful moments with you all on this new platform.
I hope you subscribe, listen, review, and share. Come connect with me on socials and check out the website too! I'm looking forward to what this journey will become, and once again, so grateful for you all for listening in. I hope that you continue to listen and enjoy The Bets Life Podcast!
